Really enjoyed this book。 Eleanor is a character that I really questioned if I liked or not, asking myself what I was getting into when I first started reading。 She absolutely grows on you during her journey of self-discovery。 I loved the creativity of this story, and the relationships throughout。 Great read。
Kenny Testa,
This novel is so well-written; the narrative voice is incredibly distinct, allowing the reader to fall in love with Eleanor。
Caitlin,
Two chapters into this novel, I thought about giving it up because I thought Eleanor was so annoying。 Then her mother called and her backstory started to come out。 Before long, I was hooked。 By the end, I was so invested in this character! Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is a beautifully written story about the importance of finding meaningful relationships and building the sort of life you want despite your past。
Sunil,
I completely understand the hype for Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine, as Gail Honeyman has created such a complex and compelling character simultaneously endearing and annoying, off-putting and sympathetic, that it's impossible not to be entranced and delighted by her journey。 Cathleen McCarron's excellent narration brings out all her quirks and adds so much personality that I'd highly recommend listening to the audiobook for the optimal experience, as actually hearing Eleanor brings you eve I completely understand the hype for Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine, as Gail Honeyman has created such a complex and compelling character simultaneously endearing and annoying, off-putting and sympathetic, that it's impossible not to be entranced and delighted by her journey。 Cathleen McCarron's excellent narration brings out all her quirks and adds so much personality that I'd highly recommend listening to the audiobook for the optimal experience, as actually hearing Eleanor brings you even closer to her。Eleanor is a lonely, socially awkward 29-year-old Scottish woman who believes that she is completely fine but we know that she is not completely fine because she is clearly suppressing some sort of childhood trauma, the details of which are not hard to piece together even if Eleanor herself is oblivious to them。 Thus she's an unwittingly unreliable narrator, and her lack of self-awareness is used for both comedy and pathos。 I love how bewildered she is by social norms that we just take for granted, and even if she's somewhat rude expressing herself—while believing that it's everyone else who's lacking in social niceties—I found her perspective refreshing and relatable。 Who amongst us has not wanted to respond to a stranger offering to buy you a drink with "I will not accept a drink from you because then I would be obligated to purchase you a drink in return, and I'm afraid I'm just not interested in spending two drinks' worth of time with you"? While this is very much a character-centric novel, Honeyman wastes no time in kicking off the ostensible plot, in which Eleanor becomes convinced that the lead singer of a local band is her soulmate and seeks to couple with him。 But even though that drives the narrative initially, the real heart of the novel is her burgeoning friendship with a new co-worker, Raymond, and, ugh, Raymond is a big ol' fuckin' cinnamon roll who shows Eleanor the sort of kindness that is so goddamn foreign to her she doesn't understand it, it's so heartbreaking。I saw that this book was referred to as "up lit," but oh boy, the first half of the book was not very uplifting because it's mostly just going "oh, honey" at Eleanor even though she can't hear us。 She just does not realize certain things, and it's dismaying to watch her have so much trouble with simple interactions, while it's also quite amusing to hear her fangirl Tesco。 Honeyman has such a firm grasp on her character (as does McCarron) that it's fun to attempt to fill in the gaps of what she's not saying, even if what she's not saying is that her Mummy fucking sucks。 But gradually, oh so gradually, we see her grow and begin to come to realizations。 We see people help her。 We see her begin to work through her shit。 And it's goddamn inspiring, really, and I'm actually tearing up writing about it now because, you know, if she can do it, anyone can。 So he understood why this was "up lit" because so much literary fiction is about ~*drama*~ and it's all dark and melancholy and that's what makes it art, but here Honeyman is making art out of positive vibes。 It reminded me a bit of A Man Called Ove, though I liked this a whole lot more。This is such a lovely book, funny and sweet, and I think everyone should spend some time with the eccentric young Ms。 Oliphant。 。。。more

。。。more

Sondra Hannan,
I didn't set out to re-read Eleanor Oliphant this year。。。 I had recommended it to my Mom and thought I would flip through it to refresh my memory。 I was halfway through the book before I realized it。 Oops! It's a testament to the novel's strength that I was so completely drawn back in。 Eleanor Oliphant shares many qualities with her favorite heroine, Jane Eyre。 An outsider might quickly dismiss them both as plain and unusual but this couldn't be further from (as Eleanor would put it) the factual I didn't set out to re-read Eleanor Oliphant this year。。。 I had recommended it to my Mom and thought I would flip through it to refresh my memory。 I was halfway through the book before I realized it。 Oops! Heel goed geschreven! Leest vlot en verveelt geen minuut。
Abbie Spiwak,
Interesting perspective and storyline。 While there was little action, I felt it made up for it in depth and emotion。 Character growth and development was good。 Some obvious foreshadowing throughout, with a few unexpected moments as well。 Eleanor may not be easily relatable in a general sense, but moments throughout her life and her daily experiences certainly were。
Maryam,
didn’t really enjoy this book, it was a hard read

This book stuck with me for weeks after I finished。 A must read!!!
Casey,
Amazing! Wow! Funny but also deep。 Eleanor, Eleanor, Eleanor! Think this is one of my favourite books of all time。
Nikki,
What a beautifully touching story! I loved this audiobook! Loved the narrators accent and all the voices。 I will miss Elenor and her little quirks and Raymond and his tender kindness。 A story of how kindness and heal a broken heart。
Mari Carmen,
Taru-Tuulikki,
I quite liked this book and would probably have given in a 4。5 if I could have。 I found it a little bit of a struggle to start off with as I couldn’t relate to Eleanor, but the book really grew on me。 Please don’t go from Reese Witherspoon’s review though。 It is beautifully written, but it certainly isn’t “incredibly funny” in any way or form。 Eleanor Oliphant has had a tragic life and I utterly fail to see how this is funny。
Mary Yanev,

Gosh, this was beautiful, painful, and charming。 The perfect balance of humor to contend with heavy, dark topics。 It was also genuinely funny; Eleanor's characterization carried the book with her unwittingly funny remarks and frank, unfiltered observations of the world。 It addressed loneliness so skillfully, capturing the primal human need for others。 Raymond grew on me throughout the book, similarly to how he grew on Eleanor I suppose, and proved the transformative power of small acts of kindne Gosh, this was beautiful, painful, and charming。 The perfect balance of humor to contend with heavy, dark topics。 It was also genuinely funny; Eleanor's characterization carried the book with her unwittingly funny remarks and frank, unfiltered observations of the world。 It addressed loneliness so skillfully, capturing the primal human need for others。 Raymond grew on me throughout the book, similarly to how he grew on Eleanor I suppose, and proved the transformative power of small acts of kindness。 The plot was delightfully unpredictable and I emerged genuinely proud of Eleanor, this strong, peculiar character。 This book really touched me, I think it'll stay with me for a long while。 。。。more
Duong,
Hm, in my opinion this book’s overhyped。 Sure, it made me laugh so hard, and at some part I truly feel empathy with her。 But, the story’s too predictable, example I could guess what was next at page 50 and whatever it was, it appeared at page 70。 I dont have much patience with predictable things, so here 3 stars。
Sara Russell,
That was unexpected! Have seen this book everywhere and didn’t expect the depth of emotion re: trauma and abuse in this book。 Worth a read in the right headspace
Rosalie Pedersen,
I loved this book - it was so weird and odd and readable。 I think a lot more could have been developed RE detail in the storyline (her and Ray - did they end up together? More about her childhood please!) but I think it was a great depiction of how childhood can effect you。 The reason I didn't give it a 5 is because I never felt like I 'couldn't put it down', you know? This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 this book was interesting。 in the beginning, i found myself having to force myself to read it。 i didn’t really like it up to the 4th chapter or so。 but after that i loved it and didn’t want to put it down。 it was very interesting。 seeing the storyline play out。 i wish we got to see more or raymond and eleanor though。 i don’t know how exactly to take the ending, if they are still just friends or more。 for my sanity i’m gonna say more。 i wanted them to get together so bad im so sad we didn’t get t this book was interesting。 in the beginning, i found myself having to force myself to read it。 i didn’t really like it up to the 4th chapter or so。 but after that i loved it and didn’t want to put it down。 it was very interesting。 seeing the storyline play out。 i wish we got to see more or raymond and eleanor though。 i don’t know how exactly to take the ending, if they are still just friends or more。 for my sanity i’m gonna say more。 i wanted them to get together so bad im so sad we didn’t get to see them being together doing couple stuff。 their adoration for each other is so sweet。 eleanor deserves someone like raymond after what she went through。 speaking of what she went through, i didn’t like the twist in the ending。 i felt it was kinda unnecessary。 idk it just felt weird i don’t think it necessarily fit the storyline。 it felt kind of like the ending of we were liars except like not right at all like it just didn’t seem to fit。 i think i’m just gonna disregard that part cause i didn’t like it。 so yeah, that’s my only complaint about this book。 otherwise, it was very cute but sad and sometimes i felt myself relating to the things eleanor felt while is something i love in a book。 it makes it all the more real。 。。。more
Patrick Stirling,
What a lovely book! It was refreshing to read a simply structured story - the last few books I read jumped around in time and/or between characters。 That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it was nice to read a story that started at the beginning, went on until the end, then stopped。There were no particular surprises or twists in the story, it's just really well told with a very sympathetic protagonist (Eleanor)。 She has no social graces and no filters, and her comments on peoples' behaviour are What a lovely book! I've had a lifelong interest in psychology, this story is about Eleanor's personal growth and how, when she's ready, circumstances conspire to help her move beyond her childhood traumas。 It's written in the first person so we see her life and the world around her through her eyes, and at the same time her limitations, her self-imposed straitjacket, are painfully (and often humorously) obvious。 This is one of the best books I've read in quite a while。 。。。more
