Summary

The seminal book featuring the transformational GROW model

Coaching for Performance is the institution of the coaching profession。 This landmark text has now undergone the largest revision yet in its history to bring it fully up to date for today's professionals。 With a focus on coaching as a way of being rather than a temporary process, this new edition explains how coaching can have a profound effect on the culture of an organisation。 No longer an activity conducted in isolation by a select few managers, coaching impacts the growth of the whole company as well as the personal growth of the individual。

This new edition includes a Foreword by John McFarlane, Chairman of Barclays and TheCityUK。 New chapters on culture change demonstrate how to build a high performance culture in any type of organisation and measure the results。 Extensive illustrative material has been added; the visuals are those used in coaching training programmes by Performance Consultants International, one of the pioneering global firms in coaching, leadership development and performance improvement。 Terminology has been revised throughout to align with that used by the International Coach Federation and a new full glossary of terms serves to make this the definitive book on the topic。

The influential GROW model (Goals, Reality, Options, Will) featured in the book is supported by new international studies and examples which are included throughout, ensuring that this edition will stay at the forefront of professional coaching and leadership development。

I enjoyed this book。 I flagged a lot of pages to review and I plan to reread this a few times as repetition is the mother of all learning。 There are gems sprinkled throughout the book so either have a highlighter or flags to revisit again。

Full of wisdom about coaching and leadership。 Some random tips。。。A coach should not ask a question that you would not be willing to answer - or have not already answered - yourself。 p159。"What are you noticing about。。。?" (eg "your driving", or "the meeting you just facilitated", etc) This a great coaching question for raising awareness。 Could the only thing limiting you be the size of your vision and your own self-limiting beliefs? I found this book hard to engage with。 The GROW model for me is the saviour of this book - and something I will certainly use moving forwards。 Much of the rest of the book however is wordy without saying much。 In this case less dialogue would have made for a much more effective read。

A great book for those who want to lean more about how the process of working with somebody or with yourself works。 For me, working with people and with myself is a must read。 How to se some objectives, finding motivation and purpose, listening with the heart, not only with the ears, are a few chapters in this book。 Is not just a lecture, it's a study。 A great book for those who want to lean more about how the process of working with somebody or with yourself works。 For me, working with people and with myself is a must read。 How to se some objectives, finding motivation and purpose, listening with the heart, not only with the ears, are a few chapters in this book。 Is not just a lecture, it's a study。 。。。more

It's a good book to get a high level perspective on coaching and was expecting for the book to go into more depth about the GROW model but it seems to have dealt with it at a superficial level as its a recommended approach to coaching。 I might need to read this again and spend time thinking about the ideas raised in the book。 It's a good book to get a high level perspective on coaching and was expecting for the book to go into more depth about the GROW model but it seems to have dealt with it at a superficial level as its a recommended approach to coaching。 I might need to read this again and spend time thinking about the ideas raised in the book。 。。。more

A good book to get an overview of coaching and the GROW model。 Theory mixed with some exercises that I will probably return to in the future to do my own reflection or to try out on coachees。

This is the origin of the GROW coaching model, which makes it required reading。 I'm sure it was groundbreaking when it was published, but at this point in time, if you've read other 101 level coaching books, they've probably already told you everything original in this one。 Definitely worth reviewing, maybe doesn't need to be read thoroughly, depending on where you are in your career。 This is the origin of the GROW coaching model, which makes it required reading。 I'm sure it was groundbreaking when it was published, but at this point in time, if you've read other 101 level coaching books, they've probably already told you everything original in this one。 Definitely worth reviewing, maybe doesn't need to be read thoroughly, depending on where you are in your career。 。。。more

Having recently incurred in the world of Coaching, I must say that this book contains everything you would learn during a Professional Coaching course and, additionally, end up with some extra small nuggets of wisdom。 I would've loved for the book to continue with the Advanced Coaching chapter for at least 10 extra ones。 I felt that this book to me by the hand and reinforced what I took during the course。 As an extra bonus, its Bibliography is something I will definitely look into to continue ad Having recently incurred in the world of Coaching, I must say that this book contains everything you would learn during a Professional Coaching course and, additionally, end up with some extra small nuggets of wisdom。 I would've loved for the book to continue with the Advanced Coaching chapter for at least 10 extra ones。 I felt that this book to me by the hand and reinforced what I took during the course。 As an extra bonus, its Bibliography is something I will definitely look into to continue adding knowledge to allow me to build a solid base for what I want to venture in terms of Coaching。 。。。more

Let's get the most important part out of the way:This is by far the most complete book I've read on coaching and it's not complete in the way of "overexplaining every little detail" but rather you'll feel like you have an answer to anything coach related after reading this book。It's a must read for any coach period! The only bad thing I have to say is that it started kinda slow (picks up at around 30 pages in)。 This is probably because I've studied a lot when it comes to coaching so the introduct Let's get the most important part out of the way:This is by far the most complete book I've read on coaching and it's not complete in the way of "overexplaining every little detail" but rather you'll feel like you have an answer to anything coach related after reading this book。It's a must read for any coach period! The only bad thing I have to say is that it started kinda slow (picks up at around 30 pages in)。 This is probably because I've studied a lot when it comes to coaching so the introductory part was not really anything new。 So you might have a different experience but that's my take。Other than that。。。 Wow! Every page is information packed but still written clear enough so that you don't have to reread sections just to understand, the information seems both relevant and correct (based on how well it matches other books I've read and my own experience) and at the end you get helpful "tie dips" into way advanced topics without trying to "be that book too"。Will written sections about using coaching to enhance leadership, agile and learning was unexpected bonuses as well。 。。。more

Consider this as the foundational book for coaching。 But then I was lucky enough to meet the now sadly deceased, Sir John Whitmore。 Thoroughly recommend for all coaches even though the profession has moved on considerably。

Solid book about principles of coaching providing many practicle examples and tools to go in start practicing coaching approach。

Stefan Bruun

The book is very basic。 The first quarter of the book is trying to sell the reader on the idea of coaching。 Most people picking up the book are probably already sold。 The last quarter of the book seems focused on justifying investments in coaching - probably for larger organizations。The real takeaway of the book is the GROW framework。 It's a good framework, but could probably have been described in a blog post or article rather than a long book。 The book is very basic。 The first quarter of the book is trying to sell the reader on the idea of coaching。 Most people picking up the book are probably already sold。 The last quarter of the book seems focused on justifying investments in coaching - probably for larger organizations。The real takeaway of the book is the GROW framework。 It's a good framework, but could probably have been described in a blog post or article rather than a long book。 。。。more

Amazing walkthroughI think is one of the best books about coaching I have read this year。 It guides you with practical real life samples, and gives you tips on what to do, and where to look for more ideas。

Greg Herringer

Mandatory reading for a course taken through my employer。 Meh。 Concepts were sound。 Book could have been half as long as it was。 At least the author mentions that the basic techniques don’t apply in all cases — specifically when deal with high performers or those who have already achieved some success。 GROW baby GROW。

Lee Griffith

A solid book going through the basic principles of the coaching conversation。 Particularly useful for those in leadership positions, or with aspirations for leadership, as it dissects how coaching - rather than managing - can improve performance, teamwork and business results。 Includes a number of useful exercises and coaching questions that leaders can use, as well as demonstrating through example conversations how the theory can work in practice。

Paul Mullan

Lots of background to how different coaching approaches work and when to use them with a simple glossary and activities to try at the end。

Chris Seltzer

This was just okay。 Lots of good pointers and exercises but nothing profound。
