Summary

This book was like a dream。 You know when you have a dream and there's very normal stuff and then just completely strange random symbolic stuff happening at the same time and when you're in the dream you're not always surprised about the crazy random stuff。。 that's what I felt reading this book。。 like I was reading a dream but it was so vivid and visual not like when someone tries to explain a dream because that's usually very boring。 This book was like a dream。 You know when you have a dream and there's very normal stuff and then just completely strange random symbolic stuff happening at the same time and when you're in the dream you're not always surprised about the crazy random stuff。。 that's what I felt reading this book。。 like I was reading a dream but it was so vivid and visual not like when someone tries to explain a dream because that's usually very boring。 。。。more

Finishing this book feels like a small achievement。 The whole story was that satisfying。 It'll leave you haunted and, well, wanting solitude。 I feel like this is the type of book that I'll read over and over again in the coming years -- partly because I had trouble understanding a lot of parts, and partly because there's always something new to think about and realize。 Finishing this book feels like a small achievement。 The whole story was that satisfying。 It'll leave you haunted and, well, wanting solitude。 I feel like this is the type of book that I'll read over and over again in the coming years -- partly because I had trouble understanding a lot of parts, and partly because there's always something new to think about and realize。 。。。more

I’m positive that if someone were to open up this book to any random page and start there instead of page 1, it would make the same amount of sense。

Follows the Buendia's as they establish themselves in isolated Macondo and then flourish and simultaneously self destruct throughout 5 generations。 It's really impressive how Gabriel Garcia Marquez can develop so many characters and create different dynamics between them in just one book。 As we follow the Buendia's we see the repetition in personalities throughout generations along with the repetition in the idea of isolation。 Be it through literal isolation from the family, isolation from Macon Follows the Buendia's as they establish themselves in isolated Macondo and then flourish and simultaneously self destruct throughout 5 generations。 It's really impressive how Gabriel Garcia Marquez can develop so many characters and create different dynamics between them in just one book。 As we follow the Buendia's we see the repetition in personalities throughout generations along with the repetition in the idea of isolation。 Be it through literal isolation from the family, isolation from Macondo or isolation through the characters own obsessions。 。。。more

One Hundred Years of Solitude was fairly perplexing and I'm not quite sure what to take away。 It's the story of Columbia。 It's the story of morality told through a retelling of the Bible。 It's a story of politics and culture of latin america。 It's a story that starts with Jose Arcadio Buendia being tied to a tree and ends with Aureliano being eaten by ants。 It's the rise and fall of Macondo。 It's the rise and fall of the Buendia family。 Throughout, there are multiple recurring searches。 One sear One Hundred Years of Solitude was fairly perplexing and I'm not quite sure what to take away。 It's the story of Columbia。 It's the story of morality told through a retelling of the Bible。 It's a story of politics and culture of latin america。 It's a story that starts with Jose Arcadio Buendia being tied to a tree and ends with Aureliano being eaten by ants。 It's the rise and fall of Macondo。 It's the rise and fall of the Buendia family。 Throughout, there are multiple recurring searches。 One search is for knowledge, especially the knowledge held in Melquíades texts。 This is the knowledge of wholeness, the philosopher's stone, the knowledge to arrive at a full picture of the Self。 By the end Aureliano Babiliona is able to understand this text and arrive at a full understanding of his family, the incest that he's perpetrated, and the complete history of things。 What keeps working against this search is the human factor of forgetfulness。 The only way that humans don't forget is through punishment and stories。 Unfortunately these keep getting wiped away。 But Melquíades text does give the ultimate understanding。 This could also be read as a search for the future。The second search is for the past。 The nostalgia that the family finds themselves lost in。 They are turning away from life to live in their memories and in the past。 Many characters are afraid of an uncertain future, and so deny themselves a future。On a social level, there's a tendency to forget the history of the past。 The townspeople forget the history of the town。 And the family forget the history of their own, fated to repeat themselves in cycles。I'll probably have to read it again after reading something like the Bible。 I honestly felt a little lost with the allusions。Altogether wonderfully written, even if it did go a little above my head。 。。。more

This is one of the few fictions that I've read that's completely written in the voice of the narrator。 It's a very unique style of writing。 Also, great usage of words。 I think the translator did a nice job。 Not my usual cup-of-tea as there's a bit of thinking needed to digest some of the scenarios。 This is one of the few fictions that I've read that's completely written in the voice of the narrator。 It's a very unique style of writing。 Also, great usage of words。 I think the translator did a nice job。 Not my usual cup-of-tea as there's a bit of thinking needed to digest some of the scenarios。 。。。more

Probably my favorite book I've read this year, and potentially one of my favorites of all time。 Just such a funny, irrational book。 It is a bit of a chore to get through at times, but really worth it imo。 All of the characters can mix together, but that's part of the fun。 Probably my favorite book I've read this year, and potentially one of my favorites of all time。 Just such a funny, irrational book。 It is a bit of a chore to get through at times, but really worth it imo。 All of the characters can mix together, but that's part of the fun。 。。。more

I wish someone could tell me why this book won a Nobel Prize。 There's something to be said about a novel that takes place over a hundred years。 Keeping those characters straight and telling a story is a feat。 The prose is beautiful (which is more impressive because the book is translated), but that's about it。 There is so little characterization of the people in this book。 The story is written as though a summary, like an old person telling a story。 I wanted this book to be 1000 pages, with vibr I wish someone could tell me why this book won a Nobel Prize。 There's something to be said about a novel that takes place over a hundred years。 Keeping those characters straight and telling a story is a feat。 The prose is beautiful (which is more impressive because the book is translated), but that's about it。 There is so little characterization of the people in this book。 The story is written as though a summary, like an old person telling a story。 I wanted this book to be 1000 pages, with vibrant characters that I actually cared about。 There's MAYBE 50 lines of dialogue in the book。 The author just tells us how the characters feel and then maybe they interact with another character (usually incest)。 I typically love books that tell the story of a huge cast over a long period of time, and I was really excited to read this type of book set in a Latin-American world, but this novel felt like a prettily written shell of the novel I thought it was going to be。I recommend this book to no one。 。。。more
