Summary

A deadly contest。 A vaulting ambition。 How far will one cyren go to win?

Mighty cyrens have ruled the ancient lair of Saddoriel for centuries。 A cavernous fortress, a subterranean labyrinth of tunnels and levels, powered by magic and music…

From the moment she was born, Roh, the daughter of an infamous criminal, has been despised by her own kind。 Restricted to the Lower Sector and forced to work as a common bone cleaner, she has always believed she belongs above: where lies adventure… and power。

Opportunity arises in the form of the Queen’s Tournament, a treacherous set of trials that could see the victor crowned ruler of the entire lair。 Up against the most cunning, dangerous cyrens in all the realms, does Roh stand a chance?

A Lair of Bones is the first gripping book in the dark fantasy quartet, Curse of the Cyren Queen。

I read alot and I mean alot。 I love sci fi and fantasy the most and out of everything I have read, The Lair of Bones is the first book that has a new and refreshing plot that centers around the Cyrens。 Love the name! It's unique and I felt like the world building was spot on。 I recommend taking a chance on this one! Thank you @booksparks @netgalley for a copy of the audiobook。 This was a great fantasy about Cyrens and the world they love in。 This was had the vibe of Hunger Games with trials to become the queen。 I love the exploration of different classes, with humans in the story。 I enjoyed seeing Roh’s growth as she goes through the trial。 I enjoyed the narrator and look forward to book 2。

Read it but don't love it。 The main character "Rho" needs to grow a back bone as towards the end she seems to be so weighed down by the little cheating she did。 And she lives in a world where cunning and backstabbing is the norm。 Read it but don't love it。 The main character "Rho" needs to grow a back bone as towards the end she seems to be so weighed down by the little cheating she did。 And she lives in a world where cunning and backstabbing is the norm。 。。。more

Amazing siren loreI’ve read a lot of fantasy & sci-fi but I’ve not come across much that delves into the background of sirens。 This book is a little like the Hunger Games for sirens (Cyrens) - only, far more original than that comparison makes it sound like。 The book is as cool as the cover art。 Really enjoyed this and am excited for the release of #2

*3。5 Stars*Likes:I went into this story kind of blind。 I love how dark and ominous the cover looks and I don’t usually read many books about Sirens or Cyrens as they are spelled in this series, but I was needing something different and I’m glad I borrowed this one。Rohesia, or Roh is the daughter of a criminal so it’s only natural that she wants to know why her mother did what she did, what really happened, and to do anything to get out of the Lower Sector。 She can do all these things if she join *3。5 Stars*Likes:I went into this story kind of blind。 I love how dark and ominous the cover looks and I don’t usually read many books about Sirens or Cyrens as they are spelled in this series, but I was needing something different and I’m glad I borrowed this one。Rohesia, or Roh is the daughter of a criminal so it’s only natural that she wants to know why her mother did what she did, what really happened, and to do anything to get out of the Lower Sector。 She can do all these things if she joins the Queen’s Tournament and wins it all – the winner becomes Queen。 But the trials are not easy and she is assigned a human to keep alive at the same time。 But Roh has it in her to win, even if she has to hurt the people she loves to do it。Roh is a morally gray character – do I like her? I like the reasons for her ambitions but I also worry what power will do to her as well。 I don’t know if I quite trust her fully to do the right things, since she shows she’s willing to do some wrong things to get her way。 Her ambition stems from how she was brought up, at orphan, despised, marked and kept down in the lower sector。 She wants more than that…as she should。 The way she goes about it is suspect though but I’m hoping for more character growth…she’s already starting to get there with Odi, her human by her side。 They have an interesting relationship and I want to see what happens with them and I don’t mean that in a romantic sense – there is no romance in this book, but if there somewhere in the next book, I won’t mind at all! Usually I need romance in my fantasy novels but I like this story as is right now。I love the characters we meet in this story from Roh’s mom, her best friends, Odi, the Queen and even Roh’s foes。 It just makes the story so interesting。The story itself is creative and I enjoyed the world building of this world of Cyrens。 I love how music was incorporated with the Cyrens kidnapping human musicians。 I was engaged with how Roh was going to carry out her plans and see if her ambitions would make her do whatever it takes to win or she would learn other ways to accomplish her goals。Random Notes:Triggers: deathRoh is a morally gray character so you either like her or you don’t。 She is ambitious, but she has a fascinating backstory, or at least her mother does and I really know what Cerys’ story is。 Odi seems to be changing Roh in some ways, softening her up when it comes to human interactions at least。 Will she able to mend her friendship with her best friends though? I hope so。I liked the trials of the Queen’s tournament but I think there could have been more intensity to it。 At least with the first two。 I did like the twist of the second trial, but the third was the most action packed of them all。 I hope the series gets more intense with the second book and the next quest Roh embarks on。It would be nice to have some kind of romance? But that’s a ME issue haha, because I love romance。FINAL THOUGHTS:Why you should read it:*fascinating world of Cyrens (Sirens), detailed world building*a tournament to win the throne, competition*interesting charactersmorally gray characterWhy you might not want to read it:no romancesome trials lacking in intensityMy Thoughts:This is a really great start to a series and I’m surprised I loved it even with no romance in it。 Roh’s journey is not over and I hope we get to learn more about the other characters in the book。 They all stand out in their own way and I love that about the stories。 I especially love this dark world of the Cyrens that the author has created and I eagerly look forward to reading the sequel。http://pastmidnight。home。blog 。。。more

This book was excellent! My favourite by Helen Scheuerer so far (and I was a fan of the Oremere Chronicles)。 A Lair of Bones was taught and suspenseful; atmospheric and emotional。 The world building was fantastic and I rooted for the characters even when I wasn't sure if I should。 A great read! I'm doubtful that any respectable lover of dark fantasy could resist this deliciously dark cover—and I'm no exception。 I picked this up despite not clicking well with most books aimed at a YA audience, but I am super glad that I did。A Lair of Bones is set in the land of the cyrens: humanoid sea-creatures who act nothing but。 They're cunning, ambitious, and selfish, and don't make a habit of trusting others of their own kind。 Rohesia (Roh for short) is no different。 When an opportunity to better I'm doubtful that any respectable lover of dark fantasy could resist this deliciously dark cover—and I'm no exception。 I picked this up despite not clicking well with most books aimed at a YA audience, but I am super glad that I did。A Lair of Bones is set in the land of the cyrens: humanoid sea-creatures who act nothing but。 They're cunning, ambitious, and selfish, and don't make a habit of trusting others of their own kind。 Rohesia (Roh for short) is no different。 When an opportunity to better her life as a bone cleaner comes along, she goes to whatever lengths necessary to ensure her place in the Queen's Tournament, held every fifty years。。。never mind the fact that there hasn't been a winner for over five hundred。Scheuerer's prose was gorgeous, and sucked me in right away。 It started with a bang, but admittedly felt a little slow in the middle before picking back up around 2/3 of the way through: once I hit that point, though, I was hooked。 I adored that Roh wasn't a 'good' character。 She struggled with her moral compass throughout the narrative, and proved multiple times that she's committed to changing her ways。 All the side characters really shone, too, and it stood out to me that it wasn't hard to remember who was who, since each had their own distinct personalities。A Lair of Bones had the added bonus of heavily involving music given how much cyrens value it, and as a musician myself, I thoroughly enjoyed how much care and attention to detail was given to describing it。 I'm still tempted to set my own tune to the lyrics in the prologue, especially since dark lullabies are my speciality。5 stars, and I would happily read more of this series。 。。。more

SPOILER FREE REVIEWFirst I'd like to say that if you have not joined Helen's email list and gotten the three prequel novellas for this series--do it。 While some prequels add an interesting perspective after the fact, in this case I think you'll have a deeper appreciation for some of the events and characters if you read them first。As for A Lair of Bones itself--I enjoyed reading it。 Though the three-events-in-a-tournament plot device is one that we've seen before--the added twists to this one (s SPOILER FREE REVIEWFirst I'd like to say that if you have not joined Helen's email list and gotten the three prequel novellas for this series--do it。 While some prequels add an interesting perspective after the fact, in this case I think you'll have a deeper appreciation for some of the events and characters if you read them first。As for A Lair of Bones itself--I enjoyed reading it。 Though the three-events-in-a-tournament plot device is one that we've seen before--the added twists to this one (specifically Odi) made it unique。 But as was the case in the Oremere Chronicles, Helen's genius is in her description and ability to create atmosphere。 Long after I've read her books and forgotten some of the finer details--I always remember how the realms she creates feel。 And in Lair of Bones a lot of that centers around her description of the music that is ever-flowing in the lair。 As a trained musician myself, I've often lamented that words just don't do it justice。 But Helen has come as close as I think a person possibly can to describing how music affects one at a soul-level。 I definitely recommend this book and can't wait to read the next in the series! 。。。more

writing just as phenomenal as the last series by this author but this book fell flat。 could've made use of at least ten more chapters。 the underground cyren world too intricate to be left at that。 the characters let it down because of the lack of depth。 everything was too superficial。 i wanted more, by the end AND during it。 the trials should've been stretched more。 maybe two discussed here and to make it more climatic, take the third trial to book 2? because the last trial was over in seconds a writing just as phenomenal as the last series by this author but this book fell flat。 could've made use of at least ten more chapters。 the underground cyren world too intricate to be left at that。 the characters let it down because of the lack of depth。 everything was too superficial。 i wanted more, by the end AND during it。 the trials should've been stretched more。 maybe two discussed here and to make it more climatic, take the third trial to book 2? because the last trial was over in seconds and i was confused。 too fast。 there is so much left to explore。 i hope the other parts are longer and more descriptive。 this left too much to be desired regarding every single aspect。 cerys, delja, odi, the water warlocks。。。 btw I've read all four prequel novellas so it was nice to relate deelie, cerys and marlow。 curious to know how they came to be where they are now centuries later。 the dystopian-like plot and storyline had me taken back from the jump。 from then on, it became too predictable。 the second i predicted something it would happen on the next page。 'her human is a boy same age as her right?' yes。 'the twins are his stepbrothers right?' they were。 'she's going to take finn with her right?' she did。 these are just a few。 i can't believe people were talking about the plot twists? what plot twists? it's not even like the typical ya tropes were used, they weren't。 the plot was too similar。 roh's sudden change in attitude the minute she was appointed a human was a surprise。 she was sweet and kind with everyone but once odi appeared, she suddenly became mean for NO reason。 it was jarring。 i know they were trying to make roh a 'different' heroine but it didn't help in sympathising with her。 i know exactly how the romance is going to go and i don't like it。 the author said enemies to lovers on her ig story so I'm assuming roh will get close to finn on this journey and she'll push odi away。 something will happen like finn will betray her or leave her or d*e then roh will suddenly open her eyes and see odi。 shit like 'he was always there' smh odi deserves so much better。 honestly, he was the best character imo。 。。。more

I inhaled it when it first popped onto my kindle。 It had been so long since the prequels but I enjoyed it。 A quick read, very hunger games but underwater, with more interesting world building。 To be honest, I lost a lot of the nuance and subtle details in that first read through。 I went back after and reread the prequels about Deelie and Cerys, and suddenly there was *a lot* more context and insight。 Some of the twists had more obvious foreshadowing on the second read through, and I’m hoping oth I inhaled it when it first popped onto my kindle。 It had been so long since the prequels but I enjoyed it。 A quick read, very hunger games but underwater, with more interesting world building。 To be honest, I lost a lot of the nuance and subtle details in that first read through。 I went back after and reread the prequels about Deelie and Cerys, and suddenly there was *a lot* more context and insight。 Some of the twists had more obvious foreshadowing on the second read through, and I’m hoping other hints set up the second book。 It really bothered me how Rohesia hated Odi for no good reason, and was especially rude to him in the beginning。 The “what kind of queen do you want to be”comment came way too late for me。 I was thinking that when she was making assumptions about Odi and Finn。 She’s very unempathetic if people are mean to her。 You can be hurt and try to understand others perspectives too。 Part of having a queen from the lower socioeconomic sections is that hopefully, she’ll be more empathetic to her people’s plight (and hopefully make things more equitable for the lower sectors, improving the lives of the poor)。 Except that she’s not really thinking about how to lead her people or what kind of leader she’ll be, she’s just desperate to read the book and understand her history。 Shes going to be a rubbish queen, is my interpretation。 Perhaps the third and fourth books is where she gets the experience to be a better leader。 Also, it made me eye roll when she made a big fuss about getting the law of the lair book and didn’t even read it。 So much emphasis was put on the “law of the lair” and she didn’t once pick up the book to understand the rules。 So stupid。 Still, I liked the world。 I liked the fey, and the continuation of the prequels。 I’m obviously very keen to know what happened to the Cerys we knew。 The gap between here and the prequels is huge。 I’m excited to read the second book。 。。。more

Right off the bat, I have to say that the characters were amazingly unique。 They each had their own personalities and vibe, and they didn’t blend together like secondary characters tend to do。 They stood out and that definitely goes for Roh, our heroine。 I’ve always enjoyed the underdog stories and I was so invested in Roh’s story that I felt every hurtful remark or barb thrown her way and every instance she felt “less than”。 My heart hurt for her many times, but I also cheered for her just as m Right off the bat, I have to say that the characters were amazingly unique。 They each had their own personalities and vibe, and they didn’t blend together like secondary characters tend to do。 They stood out and that definitely goes for Roh, our heroine。 I’ve always enjoyed the underdog stories and I was so invested in Roh’s story that I felt every hurtful remark or barb thrown her way and every instance she felt “less than”。 My heart hurt for her many times, but I also cheered for her just as much。 She is a main character that is relentless, determined, a little morally grey at times, but ultimately she is a character to which many readers will relate。 I’m excited to see what her journey looks like next! At least now, I know that I need not fear。 Let's talk about the book a little。。。。 The story is a bit slow at the beginning, you need to push yourself and to believe in author to proceed ( I have such a time in my life when I am very impatient), however, I always take a leap of hope with the authors who provide me with ARCs just to not DNF the book too early。 This time, it was the correct action from my side as the story took me to a fantastic world, to a beautifully written story with (of course) a cliffy that I want to find out the ending of。 I love strong heroines and Roh is definitely a strong heroine。 She has her flaws and somehow she is with a fragile soul, however, at the same time, she is the strongest。 She was deeply betrayed, but she got up and went to proceed。 The only thing I missed was romance, I really love a good love story, but there is none。 I definitely recommend the book。 Do not throw it in the basket of DNFs even if you feel so, because the story will draw you in and won't throw you out until the very end。I love when at the beginning, I feel like not enjoying the book, but later on, it takes me to a beautiful journey。*I received an ARC from the author's team。 The expressed opinion is my own。 。。。more
