A heart-pounding psychological thriller about friendship and obsession

Philomena 'Phil' McCarthy is a promising young officer in the London Metropolitan police。

But everything changes when she is called to the scene of a domestic assault。 Unbeknownst to her, the abuser is a decorated detective and Phil's efforts to protect his girlfriend - Tempe Brown - from violence result in Phil being unjustly struck from the force。

This pulse-racing standalone psychological thriller from the internationally bestselling author of The Secrets She Keeps is Michael Robotham's finest yet, and confirms his reputation as the Mastermind of Crime。

2 1/2 stars rounded upI have really enjoyed previous books I have read by Robotham however this plot line was so unrealistic。 Despite the author's great writing I frequently found myself rolling my eyes。 Philomena switches from tenacious, strong and focused to oblivious and dumb in order to move the story forward。 If this had been written during the 70's I could accept the cover up, but in a world of body cameras, mobile phones, accountability it didn't ring true。 I am going to forget about this 2 1/2 stars rounded upI have really enjoyed previous books I have read by Robotham however this plot line was so unrealistic。 Despite the author's great writing I frequently found myself rolling my eyes。 Philomena switches from tenacious, strong and focused to oblivious and dumb in order to move the story forward。 If this had been written during the 70's I could accept the cover up, but in a world of body cameras, mobile phones, accountability it didn't ring true。 I am going to forget about this read and focus on the author's next offering。 。。。more

Disappointed!Phil/Philomena was not believable - her actions seemed inconsistent with the initial descriptions of her life prior to when we meet her。。。 clunky & rushed depiction of coercive control & toxic relationships。。。 felt somewhat like an introductory lecture。。。

I have loved every single Michael Robotham novel to date。 I did not rate this one as highly, the story seemed too slow and times and then too rushed at other times。 I also found the quick and open actions of the other police officers to be unrealistic in this day and age, maybe more believable if it had been set a few decades ago。

I love a good Michael Robotham and “When You are mine”didn’t disappoint。 Interesting characters with a page turning plot line。 Philomena McCarthy is a female protagonist I would like to hear more from。

4。5 stars。 I really enjoyed this book。 It’s not gory, frightening, or overly procedural in terms of the policing aspect – it’s simply a great crime thriller。 The characters are relatable and likeable。 The book is easy to read as the plot effortlessly and steadily grips the reader throughout。 Michael Robotham really is a master of his craft。

I really enjoyed the main strands of the plot: Constable Philomena’s conflict with wife-abuser Detective Goodall, her blossoming relationship with the questionable Tempe and the reunion with her gangster father。 The latter was perhaps the weakest aspect to the story, because it was not clear why she would so readily embrace her criminal family when she had chosen to follow a career in policing。 It’s a full-on story, with lots going on, but the characterisation is strong and keeps the reader moti I really enjoyed the main strands of the plot: Constable Philomena’s conflict with wife-abuser Detective Goodall, her blossoming relationship with the questionable Tempe and the reunion with her gangster father。 The latter was perhaps the weakest aspect to the story, because it was not clear why she would so readily embrace her criminal family when she had chosen to follow a career in policing。 It’s a full-on story, with lots going on, but the characterisation is strong and keeps the reader motivated。 I felt that it gained momentum in the second half and reached a satisfying conclusion at the end。 However, Philomena’s naivety and gullibility were not completely convincing, particularly in regard to her relationship with Tempe。 But this is a quibble, because I enjoyed the book。 。。。more

2。5 stars。 I have many thoughts about this。 The story and the mystery/suspense was enjoyable but I just don't think I liked how the main character was written。 Things also seemed a bit rushed at times and I felt like my head was spinning。 Overall I enjoyed the read and found myself wanting to know what happens next, but there was just something missing ifor me。 2。5 stars。 I have many thoughts about this。 The story and the mystery/suspense was enjoyable but I just don't think I liked how the main character was written。 Things also seemed a bit rushed at times and I felt like my head was spinning。 Overall I enjoyed the read and found myself wanting to know what happens next, but there was just something missing ifor me。 。。。more

The description of “heart pounding psychological thriller about friendship and obsession” on the blurb sums it up pretty well。 But it’s also about justice, revenge, family loyalty and trying to do “the right thing” in the face of adversity。 With Robotham’s uncanny eye for detail and the secret machinations of the human psyche, he lets his enigmatic young protagonist Philomena (“Phil”) take us by the hand and pull us into a story that is simply unputdownable。 I always know when a book is excellent when the boundaries between fiction and reality blur and I have to re-orientate myself to my own room, in my own house, the characters still drifting like smoke in the corners, unwilling to leave。I’m not going to tell you anything about the plot – read the blurb if you must, but the less you know the better。 Robotham is an author I lay my trust in to lead me on a wondrous journey no matter what, and I like to take the surprises as I find them, no expectations, no preconceptions。 Phil is one of those characters who will stay with me like a hint of my own lost idealistic youth。 I cheered her on, I grieved for her, I felt as if I was in her head。 Robotham’s books are all about their characters, the way they interact, their decision-making, the friendships and relationships that feature prominently, be it between lovers, friends, family or enemies。 And woven into these dynamics is a clever, multi-layered plot that kept me guessing right to the end。Lovers of clever, psychological thrillers, do yourself a favour and read this book。 Robotham never fails to impress。 Highly recommended。 *blog* *facebook* *instagram* 。。。more

While I am quite addicted to Michael's series, I thoroughly enjoy his standalone novels as they give me a break from the same characters and introduce new ones into different situations。 Written from the perspective of a policewoman who also happens to be the only daughter of a well known 'business' (gangster) Philomena gets entangled with crooked cops and battered wives。 This is a great page-turner, like all the author's books and I easily finished this in two days。 Excellent story line and per While I am quite addicted to Michael's series, I thoroughly enjoy his standalone novels as they give me a break from the same characters and introduce new ones into different situations。 Written from the perspective of a policewoman who also happens to be the only daughter of a well known 'business' (gangster) Philomena gets entangled with crooked cops and battered wives。 This is a great page-turner, like all the author's books and I easily finished this in two days。 Excellent story line and perfect ending。 。。。more

There are few authors whose new releases automatically jump to the top of my Next Read list, or even make me not start a book to ensure I can dive into their newest offering on release day。 Michael Robotham has been one of those authors for almost a decade! 2,5 stars。I would have given 3,5 if the main character would not have acted as idiotic as she did。 I wanted to slap her around the whole time because she made me really mad。 I did not like her and found her dumb like hell。 All her moralising and doing foolish things got on my nerves。I love Michael Robotham, and the book was - as always - really very good written。

I really enjoyed this standalone novel, but really hope we see and read more of Phil。 One reviewer here said they skimmed over her parents and family pages, but I found this so well realised - the way someone can achieve in a field that is the exact opposite of family expectations and norms。 I wish Michael would set a novel in Australia, we have enough weird and wonderful inspiration, surely!?

This was not my favourite Michael Robotham book 。 I did like some of the character connections and there were quite a few unexpected twists。 The book was an easy read although the main character lacked the lustre I was hoping for especially when she resumes the relationship with a man who clearly did not support her in her time of need。 This book addresses police corruption, false imprisonment, domestic violence and the breakdown of family。 It has a predictable happy ending。

Such a great book! I really enjoyed Phil。 She's a kickass police officer who is trying to keep her head above water in a male dominated world。 When she saves Tempe from a domestic abuse situation, she tries to do it by the book, but is faced with plenty of opposition from her coworkers。。。because the abuser is another police officer。 From there, Phil's life spirals out of control。 Those she doesn't trust become her saviours and those she loves may not be on her side at all。 Michael just can't do Such a great book! I hope that the protagonist here, Phil McCarthy, shows up again in sequels, as I really liked her。Additionally, all Robotham books have an element of compassion, warmth, and empathy that reflect back on the author himself。 He is a man I'd like to know in real life。 I'm grateful to him for all the pleasure (and distraction from Covid and other of life's travails) that his words have given me。 Thank you。 。。。more
