Summary

Award-winning reporter Sarah Frier reveals an inside, never-before-told, behind-the-scenes look at how Instagram defied the odds to become one of the most culturally defining apps of the decade。

Since its creation in 2010, Instagram’s fun and simple interface has captured our collective imagination, swiftly becoming a way of life。 In No Filter: The Inside Story of Instagram, technology reporter Sarah Frier explains how Instagram’s founders married art and technology to overcome skeptics and to hook the public on visual storytelling。 At first, Instagram initially attracted artisans, but then the platform exploded in popularity among the masses, creating an entire industry of digital influencers that’s now worth tens of billions of dollars。

Eighteen months after Instagram’s launch and explosive growth, the founders—Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger—made the gut-wrenching decision to sell the company to Facebook。 For most companies, that would be the end of the story; but for Instagram, it was only the beginning。 Instagram borrowed some lessons from Facebook and rejected others, until eventually its success stirred tension with Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg, just as Facebook became embroiled in a string of public crises。 Frier unearths the details that led to the cofounders’ departure, bringing to light dramatic moments unknown to the public until now。

At its heart, No Filter draws on unprecedented exclusive access—from the founders of Instagram, as well as employees, executives, and competitors; hedge fund billionaire Ray Dalio; Anna Wintour of Vogue; Kris Jenner of the Kardashian-Jenner empire; and a plethora of influencers, from fashionistas with millions of followers to owners of famous dogs worldwide—to show how Instagram has fundamentally changed the way we communicate, shop, eat, and travel。 The book brings readers inside users’ strategies to craft their personal image and fame, explaining how the company’s product decisions have affected the structure of our society。 From teenagers to the pope, No Filter tells the captivating story of how Instagram not only created a new industry but also changed our lives。

A fascinating look into the “inside” of Instagram and Facebook。 I loved reading about how Instagram started and the trajectory of the company after they were acquired by Facebook。 I knew Zuckerburg was a business genius beforehand and felt he was kinda slimy — this book confirmed all of my feelings。 It was eye opening to see how Facebook’s (and now Instagram’s) top priority is growth and “domination” compared to “building community” as they like to be portrayed。 This makes you reevaluate how you A fascinating look into the “inside” of Instagram and Facebook。 I loved reading about how Instagram started and the trajectory of the company after they were acquired by Facebook。 I knew Zuckerburg was a business genius beforehand and felt he was kinda slimy — this book confirmed all of my feelings。 It was eye opening to see how Facebook’s (and now Instagram’s) top priority is growth and “domination” compared to “building community” as they like to be portrayed。 This makes you reevaluate how you use social media and question the longevity of it in the future。 Highly recommend。 。。。more

4 stars。 This book surprised me。 I enjoyed it much more than I expected。I'm not a frequent Instagrammer, if that's the term。 I understand its appeal, it just never works for me。 But reading this gave me some new thoughts, about its founders, its ways to work in the industry and how the society and the community shaped Instagram to be what it is today。Super informative, and I learnt more not about Instagram, but also about Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat。 Instagram stood out for its nobility (??) 4 stars。 This book surprised me。 I enjoyed it much more than I expected。I'm not a frequent Instagrammer, if that's the term。 I understand its appeal, it just never works for me。 But reading this gave me some new thoughts, about its founders, its ways to work in the industry and how the society and the community shaped Instagram to be what it is today。Super informative, and I learnt more not about Instagram, but also about Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat。 Instagram stood out for its nobility (??) since the founders, Systrom and Krieger had good intentions when building it, but when it comes to social media, I don't think the founder is as powerful as the community inside that social media。 I was surprised to see Mrs。 Kim Kardashian being the one who was pushing the boundaries of Instagram, doing something never seen before on the platform。 At the end of the day, people will do everything to climb to the top。 And for platform with over 1 billion users, the race was really hard and cutthroat。 Also, Mark Zuckerberg was portrayed pretty negatively in this book, LOL。 My man deserves better。 Well, considering how I was so addicted to Facebook these days, I guess the author is right about Facebook Inc。 being an evil company。----------------------------------------------Sách hay, nếu bạn thích Bad Blood (Máu bẩn) thì sẽ thích quyển này。 Có đề cập đến nhiều doanh nghiệp thành công ở Mỹ cũng như nhiều người nổi tiếng tạo dựng sự nghiệp trên Instagram。 Mình ưng quyển này vì nó cho mình nhiều thông tin thú vị, ngoài những thứ thường thấy trên báo đài。 。。。more

4。5。 If you've used Instagram since its early days, you'll feel some nostalgia as the book describes a social media made for sharing photos, joy, and creativity。 Oh how much has changed。 And if you don't already have feelings about Zuckerberg, you will after this。 He seems pretty evil and is extremely full of himself, asking the public to take frequent surveys on his leadership style and never wanting to help Instagram for fear it would overtake Facebook as the better application。 The scary thin 4。5。 If you've used Instagram since its early days, you'll feel some nostalgia as the book describes a social media made for sharing photos, joy, and creativity。 Oh how much has changed。 And if you don't already have feelings about Zuckerberg, you will after this。 He seems pretty evil and is extremely full of himself, asking the public to take frequent surveys on his leadership style and never wanting to help Instagram for fear it would overtake Facebook as the better application。 The scary thing about Instagram is it has all the problems Facebook does, from bullying to illegal activity to election interference, but manages to let Facebook take all the heat while still being seen as the "good" social media。 Overall I find social media and Instagram in particular fascinating, and this book provided a really good overview。 。。。more

An absolute eye opener book about how social media platforms are created and when they reach a certain scale like 1 billion users, then why and how they get messed up。 Tons of insights about decisions made at Instagram at early days and how it made it most popular and community network, why Snapshot came and how it got popular, and what happened after Facebook acquired Instagram。 A wonder story about the decisions which are made behind any social media network, and how people are turned into use An absolute eye opener book about how social media platforms are created and when they reach a certain scale like 1 billion users, then why and how they get messed up。 Tons of insights about decisions made at Instagram at early days and how it made it most popular and community network, why Snapshot came and how it got popular, and what happened after Facebook acquired Instagram。 A wonder story about the decisions which are made behind any social media network, and how people are turned into users and why addictive behavior is created as a metric in these companies。 I am happy that I don't use Facebook or Instagram or any other network except LinkedIn for my time on internet。 。。。more

I found this book a bit difficult to read at times。 The story is something that really interests me, and I've read other books on tech companies (Ugly Truth, Super Pumped) and those were easier to comprehend and take information in。 If you haven't read much about Instagram i recommend it, but if you're previously done some research I didn't find anything new reported in the book。 I found this book a bit difficult to read at times。 The story is something that really interests me, and I've read other books on tech companies (Ugly Truth, Super Pumped) and those were easier to comprehend and take information in。 If you haven't read much about Instagram i recommend it, but if you're previously done some research I didn't find anything new reported in the book。 。。。more

I liked this book much more than I thought I would。 This book is about Instagram, but it's more a story about the inter workings of Facebook。 Instagram wasn't part of Facebook for only a short period of time, and it makes sense that there would be a lot of Facebook talk。 I really loved this book and how Instagram has changed society。 I liked this book much more than I thought I would。 This book is about Instagram, but it's more a story about the inter workings of Facebook。 Instagram wasn't part of Facebook for only a short period of time, and it makes sense that there would be a lot of Facebook talk。 I really loved this book and how Instagram has changed society。 。。。more

I didn't realize at all how interconnected silicon Valley was。 I felt many of the things that happened at the start-up phase of Instagram involved some kind of chance encounter with another CEO at a coffee shop or something。 (note to self, hangout at coffee shops?)Overall, I really liked this book it, it made me appreciate how important marketing is to the success of a company。 Especially in how users perceive your company。The book also made me rethink my stance on the responsibility of tech com I didn't realize at all how interconnected silicon Valley was。 I felt many of the things that happened at the start-up phase of Instagram involved some kind of chance encounter with another CEO at a coffee shop or something。 (note to self, hangout at coffee shops?)Overall, I really liked this book it, it made me appreciate how important marketing is to the success of a company。 Especially in how users perceive your company。The book also made me rethink my stance on the responsibility of tech companies (especially social media) to foster an environment that's healthy and not intentionally harming users。I used to strongly believe that natural human behavior was the cause behind why Social Media websites would turn into a cesspool, but now I'm starting see that alot of has to do with how the websites are built and what behaviors certain types of algorithms encourage。 。。。more

This book explores the story behind Instagram - the origins of the app, how after only 18 months in business they were acquired by Facebook for a whopping sum, how the app changed for the good and the bad while under Facebook rule, and what led to the cofounders' eventual departure。 Great story bringing to light what goes on behind the scenes! A raw, unfiltered (no pun intended) look into the inspiration behind creating an app which has garnered roughly 1 billion users。 Frier unearths the complications behind selling to Facebook, and subsequently becoming the social media behemoth it is today。 A bit dry at times but overall, incredibly fascinating。

I was late in joining Twitter and Facebook, yet, I was one of the first Instagrammers among my community。 My first post on Instagram was just about 1,5 year after its launch, even a little few days before the acquisition by Facebook。 Yet, I've never realized that how little I know about one of my daily main-used app。 (especially since Facebook has grown enormously to an 'edge of circle' network and no longer an app for homies and close ones)。'No filter' is engrossing as well as enlightening。 I w I was late in joining Twitter and Facebook, yet, I was one of the first Instagrammers among my community。 My first post on Instagram was just about 1,5 year after its launch, even a little few days before the acquisition by Facebook。 Yet, I've never realized that how little I know about one of my daily main-used app。 (especially since Facebook has grown enormously to an 'edge of circle' network and no longer an app for homies and close ones)。'No filter' is engrossing as well as enlightening。 I was about to write some lines to beguile my circle to read it, but the blurb in the back of the book is already exhaustive and genuinely intriguing。 If you are just an ordinary user of the Facebook ecosystem like me, once you finish reading this book, you would never look at it the same way again。 。。。more

Excellent insight into the inner workings of a tech start-up in Silicon Valley。 Interesting to see the trend of the size of the problems rising in tandem with the size of the company。 As expected, Facebook's grow at all cost mantra is present throughout which didn't sit easy with Instagram's founders and one wonders that despite becoming very rich, do they regret selling the app, especially when they had an offer from Twitter。 Excellent insight into the inner workings of a tech start-up in Silicon Valley。 Interesting to see the trend of the size of the problems rising in tandem with the size of the company。 As expected, Facebook's grow at all cost mantra is present throughout which didn't sit easy with Instagram's founders and one wonders that despite becoming very rich, do they regret selling the app, especially when they had an offer from Twitter。 。。。more

It's hard to imagine how this book could have been better from a storytelling perspective。 It's well-researched and well-told。 The story of Instagram isn't as dramatic as the story of Facebook or Twitter (it was, after all, built in an age where the idea of social network wasn't revolutionary), so readers may feel like there's not much narrative momentum, but if you're interested in the behind-the-scenes dynamics behind the app, this is a five-star telling。 It's hard to imagine how this book could have been better from a storytelling perspective。 It's well-researched and well-told。 The story of Instagram isn't as dramatic as the story of Facebook or Twitter (it was, after all, built in an age where the idea of social network wasn't revolutionary), so readers may feel like there's not much narrative momentum, but if you're interested in the behind-the-scenes dynamics behind the app, this is a five-star telling。 。。。more
