Summary

Tim Ferriss, the #1 New York Times best-selling author of The 4-Hour Workweek, shares the ultimate choose-your-own-adventure book—a compilation of tools, tactics, and habits from 130+ of the world's top performers。 From iconic entrepreneurs to elite athletes, from artists to billionaire investors, their short profiles can help you answer life's most challenging questions, achieve extraordinary results, and transform your life。

From the author:

In 2017, several of my close friends died in rapid succession。 It was a very hard year, as it was for many people。

It was also a stark reminder that time is our scarcest, non-renewable resource。

With a renewed sense of urgency, I began asking myself many questions:

Were my goals my own, or simply what I thought I should want?
How much of life had I missed from underplanning or overplanning?
How could I be kinder to myself?
How could I better say “no” to the trivial many to better say “yes” to the critical few?
How could I best reassess my priorities and my purpose in this world?

To find answers, I reached out to the most impressive world-class performers in the world, ranging from wunderkinds in their 20s to icons in their 70s and 80s。 No stone was left unturned。

This book contains their answers—practical and tactical advice from mentors who have found solutions。 Whether you want to 10x your results, get unstuck, or reinvent yourself, someone else has traveled a similar path and taken notes。

This book, Tribe of Mentors, includes many of the people I grew up viewing as idols or demi-gods。 Less than 10% have been on my podcast (The Tim Ferriss Show, more than 200 million downloads), making this a brand-new playbook of playbooks。

No matter your challenge or opportunity, something in these pages can help。

Among other things, you will learn:

• More than 50 morning routines—both for the early riser and those who struggle to get out of bed。
• How TED curator Chris Anderson realized that the best way to get things done is to let go。
• The best purchases of $100 or less (you'll never have to think about the right gift again)。
• How to overcome failure and bounce back towards success。
• Why Humans of New York creator Brandon Stanton believes that the best art will always be the riskiest。
• How to meditate and be more mindful (and not just for those that find it easy)。
• Why tennis champion Maria Sharapova believe that “losing makes you think in ways victories can’t。”
• How to truly achieve work-life balance (and why most people tell you it isn’t realistic)。
• How billionaire Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz transformed the way he engages with difficult situations to reduce suffering。
• Ways to thrive (and survive) the overwhelming amount of information you process every day。
• How to achieve clarity on your purpose and assess your priorities。
• And much more。

This reference book, which I wrote for myself, has already changed my life。 I certainly hope the same for you。

I wish you luck as you forge your own path。

All the best,

Tim Ferriss

This is not a book to read front to back。 There's too much good stuff in here。 Leaving it perpetually in my "currently reading" list makes no sense。 This is not a book to read front to back。 There's too much good stuff in here。 Leaving it perpetually in my "currently reading" list makes no sense。 。。。more

This book would be much better if Tim didn't put his opinions。 I could only read 30% of this book。 Most of the stuff in the book is just superficial advice。 There is occasionally good content。 The book would be 100x better if Tim stipped 90% of the book and kept only the best content in there。That said the book won't help you gain a new mental model or a new way of seeing the world。 It is a collection of lots of little ideas which is explained in a few sentences。 No one learns by reading a few l This book would be much better if Tim didn't put his opinions。 I could only read 30% of this book。 Most of the stuff in the book is just superficial advice。 There is occasionally good content。 The book would be 100x better if Tim stipped 90% of the book and kept only the best content in there。That said the book won't help you gain a new mental model or a new way of seeing the world。 It is a collection of lots of little ideas which is explained in a few sentences。 No one learns by reading a few lines。 Learning requires exposure to an idea over an extended period of time。 This book just throws 100s of ideas at the reader hoping a few sticks。 Maybe it does。 But a better way would be to take a master-class。 Or read a whole book about a single concept。 Or be exposed to one of the people in the book over an extended period of time。 Like watching all of his youtube videos。 Overall I only recommend this book, if you're making a list of ideas。 If you're looking to upgrade your mind & learn something that sticks with you for decades read any other book。 。。。more

Better than Tools of Titans, though still hit or miss。 Closer to 30% of the interviews (as opposed to the appalling 10% in Tools of Titans) are with women, so that’s something。

Absolutely informative and interesting book。 Going in, I got exactly what I expected: Straightforward and to-the-point answers to some very well-curated questions by Tim Ferriss from some of the most successful people in the world。 I read half and listened to the other half on Audible and it made for excellent listening material for long commutes。 I particularly loved Tim Urban, Jesse Williams, Patton Oswalt, Jerzy Gregorek, Aniela Gregorek, Jimmy Fallon, Brené Brown, Ashton Kutcher, Eric Ripert Absolutely informative and interesting book。 Going in, I got exactly what I expected: Straightforward and to-the-point answers to some very well-curated questions by Tim Ferriss from some of the most successful people in the world。 I read half and listened to the other half on Audible and it made for excellent listening material for long commutes。 I particularly loved Tim Urban, Jesse Williams, Patton Oswalt, Jerzy Gregorek, Aniela Gregorek, Jimmy Fallon, Brené Brown, Ashton Kutcher, Eric Ripert, Larry King (absolutely hilarious), Neil Gaiman, Marie Forleo, Whitney Cummings, Steve Aoki, Robert Rodriguez, Kristen Ulmer and Yuval Noah Harari。 I also noted that the one book that showed up the most (5 times) was Viktor Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning", (4 times) Yuval Noah Harari's "Sapiens" and Paulo Coelho's "The Alchemist" amongst some other great books that are favourites。 I'll be reading those for sure (I own the Alchemist)。 I also loved Tim's break-pages with "Thoughts I'm Pondering" by other great minds from all over the world and the final thoughts at the end of the book by Tim。 For someone with a short attention-span, this kept me very busy and relaxed with great information to ponder that I can go back and refer to anytime。 。。。more

This is a similar book to "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill, but tailored and adapted to the new century's needs。 Personally, I've noticed three main patterns in the stories of all these successful people。 #1 Most of them chose to persevere and practice something of personal interest。 Many left the school and most of them by the time they finished college they knew what they want out of life。 #2 In the hectic world that we live in nowadays, meditation played a huge part in staying sane and This is a similar book to "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill, but tailored and adapted to the new century's needs。 Personally, I've noticed three main patterns in the stories of all these successful people。 #1 Most of them chose to persevere and practice something of personal interest。 Many left the school and most of them by the time they finished college they knew what they want out of life。 #2 In the hectic world that we live in nowadays, meditation played a huge part in staying sane and going forward in achieving meaningful success。#3 Inevitably failure will hit each one of us。 These "titans" choose to see failure as a milestone/learning point and move forward, smarter and better opposed to the "this should have not happened in my life" kind of attitude (that most of us have) myself included。Overall it's worth investing the time and effort。 A great read! 。。。more

This is a great concept and good collection of individuals providing advice。 However, I can’t help but think this book would have been better as a collection of charts depicting the information。 In fact you can easily Google the main takeaways from each mentor (e。g。 best book, purchase under $100, favorite quote, etc。) and cut out the fluff。

I have somewhat mixed feelings about Tim Ferriss’s work: on the one hand I find much of his work to be superficial and shallow; on the other hand his first book, The Four Hour Workweek (2007), played a part in the best decision I’ve made in my life, and his second book, The Four Hour Body (2010), made many aware of the importance of kettlebell swings, turkish get ups, and his “slow carb diet”。 (It’s quite possible that the wellspring of my haterade comes from envy and/or self-loathing。) This boo I have somewhat mixed feelings about Tim Ferriss’s work: on the one hand I find much of his work to be superficial and shallow; on the other hand his first book, The Four Hour Workweek (2007), played a part in the best decision I’ve made in my life, and his second book, The Four Hour Body (2010), made many aware of the importance of kettlebell swings, turkish get ups, and his “slow carb diet”。 (It’s quite possible that the wellspring of my haterade comes from envy and/or self-loathing。) This book, Tribe of Mentors, is a collection of responses to cookie-cut questions from Mr。 Ferriss (e。g。, what is the best thing you spent under $100 on, what are the top 3 books you’ve gifted, what advices would you give someone about to enter the real world, etc。)。 Although most of the responses themselves are (imho) likewise cliche platitudes, there was an impressive and wide range of “mentors” such as Naval Ravikant (investor), Tim Urban (blogger), Ayaan Hirsi Ali (activist), and Terry Crews (athlete and actor)。 One of the more consistent responses from the mentors was a very influential book in their lives - Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankel。 A favorite takeaway of mine was from Julia Galef (podcaster), who said that when you fail at something, the post-mortem should consist of not only identifying the contributing external factors but also the possible existence of an underlying issue or policy (e。g。, if you miss your flight was it because of traffic or your own misperception of time)。 Another from Gary Vaynerchuck (entrepreneur): macropatience and microspeed, as opposed to most others who stress having a 5 year plan while frittering away precious hours and days in front of their smartphones and binge watching Netflix - in other words, squeeze the f*ck out of your days and the years will take care of themselves。 One more from Maurice Ashlley (chess grandmaster): live in reverse - in your youth apply the the temperance and guidance of elderly wisdom, and in old age do not renounce curiosity or passion; revel in the fact that you will be a new and different person at each stage of life。 。。。more
