Summary

From rising star Jessica Goodman, author of They Wish They Were Us, comes a new fast-paced thriller about two sisters vying for the top spot on their cross-country team--the only way out of their stifling small town。 But their dreams are suddenly thrown into peril when a new girl threatens to take away everything they've worked for。。。 until she disappears。

Stella and Ellie Steckler are only a year apart, but their different personalities make their relationship complicated。 Stella is single-minded, driven, and she keeps to herself。 Cross-country running is her life and she won't let anything get in the way of being the best。 Her sister Ellie is a talented runner too, but she also lets herself have fun。 She has friends。 She goes to parties。 She has a life off the course。

The sisters do have one thing in common, though: the new girl, Mila Keene。 Both Stecklers' lives are upended when Mila comes to town。 Mila was the top runner on her team back home and at first, Ellie and Stella view her as a threat。 But soon Ellie can't help but be drawn to her warm, charming personality。 After her best friend moved away and her first boyfriend betrayed her, Ellie's been looking for a friend。 In a moment of weakness, she even shares her darkest secret with Mila。 For her part, Stella finds herself noticing the ways she and Mila are similar。 Mila is smart and strong--she's someone Stella can finally connect with。 As the two get closer, Stella becomes something she vowed she'd never be: distracted。

With regionals approaching and college scouts taking notice, the pressure is on。 Each girl has their future on the line and they won't let friendships get in their way。 But then, suddenly, Mila goes out on a training run and never returns。 No one knows what happened, but all eyes are on the Steckler sisters。

Set to be released on July 27th, They’ll Never Catch Us by Jessica Goodman will have you wondering just how deep everyone’s secrets run。Ok I binged this book in 36 hours and it’s out today so I don’t know what else I need to say to convince you to read this book! (But if you need more convincing, keep reading lol)。Let it be known that I’m not the biggest fan of thrillers。 So trust me when I say that this book is AMAZING! Goodman is definitely turning into an auto-read author for me! 。。。more

They Wish They Were Us was one of my favourite reads of all time, so I knew I would love this one。 I wasn’t wrong。 I loved the intense, competitive relationship between Ellie & Stella and all of the girls on the team。 The story was fast paced, unnerving, and still managed to completely surprise me。

They Wish They Were Us, I’ll admit that I enjoyed They’ll Never Catch Us even more because it’s darker, grittier, and really digs into complicated family dynamics。Told in dual narration, the story follows sisters Stella and Ellie Steckler, who are highly competitive cross-country runners。 Being that they’re only one year apart, their biggest competition is each other…that is until cross-country star Mila Keene joins their team。Now that there’s a new rival in town, the rivalry between Stella and They Wish They Were Us, I’ll admit that I enjoyed They’ll Never Catch Us even more because it’s darker, grittier, and really digs into complicated family dynamics。Told in dual narration, the story follows sisters Stella and Ellie Steckler, who are highly competitive cross-country runners。 Being that they’re only one year apart, their biggest competition is each other…that is until cross-country star Mila Keene joins their team。Now that there’s a new rival in town, the rivalry between Stella and Ellie is even more fierce and secrets that could undo them both are threatening to spill over and keep them from being scouted by colleges。If you’re looking for a fast paced, action packed thriller then this one will definitely not be for you。 Instead, this is a slow burn atmospheric thriller that takes its time laying the foundation in terms of our main characters and their intense passion and competitive nature when it comes to cross-country before we get to the murder mystery aspect。That being said, Goodman does a fantastic job of examining the double standard that females face when it comes to competitive sports。 There were so many times that I just wanted to scream for both Stella and Ella when it came to the unfairness and the blatant sexism and misogyny。 On the flip side, the girl power theme was spot on。I also really enjoyed the overall messiness when it comes to the each of the characters and the decisions that they make。 Nothing in this story is black and white but rather a sliding scale of grey, which definitely played on my own emotions when it comes to all of our players。I know I’ve avoided major plot points, but honestly, I think it’s best to experience them on your own。 Don’t get me wrong, there weren’t many jaw dropping revelations, but the final twist was one that I did not see coming。 。。。more

As a big fan of Goodman's first book, They Wish They Were Us, I couldn't wait to get my hands on her second book。 The plot for this book was just as easy to get into and set the stage for an action packed storyline。 I really enjoyed the sisters as alternating narrators that showed both their individuality as well as two sides to the same event。 When the town searches for Mila the plot seemed to slow down and while you got more details and dug deeper into the characters, it lost me a little bit。 As a big fan of Goodman's first book, They Wish They Were Us, I couldn't wait to get my hands on her second book。 The plot for this book was just as easy to get into and set the stage for an action packed storyline。 I really enjoyed the sisters as alternating narrators that showed both their individuality as well as two sides to the same event。 When the town searches for Mila the plot seemed to slow down and while you got more details and dug deeper into the characters, it lost me a little bit。 The book ended in a twist I didn't see coming which was great, it also left a few loose ends for me and I wanted another few chapters! A good mystery about a cross country runner who goes missing in a town that has had a history of murdered cross country runners。 Hated the ending, but the mystery kept me guessing。

I wanted to like this one more; I really did。 I guessed “who done it” very very early on, but maybe that’s because I’ve read so many of these types of books before。 I didn’t care for a good deal of the writing (the clunky similes, the forced “deep” phrasing) but something about it kept me reading so when I guess I’ll give it 3 stars。

4。5…When I first started this book, I wasn’t sure whether or not I would like it…however a few chapters in, I was hooked! I appreciated seeing the growth of the characters throughout the book which is shown definitely in the ending! Definitely enjoyed this book…couldn’t stop reading it!

Ellie and Stella Steckler are the fastest runners around。 At their school and the surrounding areas。 They live in Edgewater nicknamed Deadwater because 3 track stars were found years ago brutally murdered。 The cases are never solved。 Stella is being scouted by Georgetown, when she is accused of doing something violent to keep her top spot。 Everything changes when Mila comes to town, both sisters befriend her and then she mysteriously disappears。 Is the serial killer back? suspenseful

I loved this book and recommend it for readers who enjoy Gillian Flynn (especially Sharp Objects)。 The prickly yet loving relationship between the Steckler sisters felt very real。

While the premise was exciting and interesting and the setting was well developed, the differences and individualities between the sisters could have been more developed to help the story hook me more。 Initially I had a hard time differentiating between them physically and was hoping for more description as we got to know their thinking (which I assumed would develop more nuance as it went) but ultimately the two characters never felt split even when we were supposed to see them as such。 Overall While the premise was exciting and interesting and the setting was well developed, the differences and individualities between the sisters could have been more developed to help the story hook me more。 Initially I had a hard time differentiating between them physically and was hoping for more description as we got to know their thinking (which I assumed would develop more nuance as it went) but ultimately the two characters never felt split even when we were supposed to see them as such。 Overall it was well-paced but I do wish it had more development of characters as the story unfolded。 。。。more

If Goodreads would let me give 4。5 stars I would, but I'll just round up to five! While I would have done the big twist just a little bit different (I would've picked a different perp, I just think that the real perp was a bit shallow and not as satisfying), but overall, I really liked the book! One thing I can always count on is how much I enjoy YA Mystery/Thrillers and this one definitely did not disappoint。 I loved reading about Stella and Ellie’s complicated sister relationship and their relationships with their teammates in the midst of fighting to secure their futures。 The mystery element was done really well and while I definitely had suspicions about who the killer was there were still elements and twists that surprised me until the end。 Definitely recommend this if you’re a fan One thing I can always count on is how much I enjoy YA Mystery/Thrillers and this one definitely did not disappoint。 I loved reading about Stella and Ellie’s complicated sister relationship and their relationships with their teammates in the midst of fighting to secure their futures。 The mystery element was done really well and while I definitely had suspicions about who the killer was there were still elements and twists that surprised me until the end。 Definitely recommend this if you’re a fan of other YA thrillers like A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder or Truly Devious! 。。。more

I enjoyed this sophomoric book by Ms。 Goodman much more than I did her debut novel。 It flowed better。 My only issue was that the ending could have been so much better。 Do not get me wrong the premise of the ending was great。 I just would have liked a bit more。 It just seemed abrupt。 I already have her next book on my TBR list。 I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next to share with us。

What a great read。。。I honestly loved this book。 After reading [they wish they were us] I really started liking Jessica Goodman's writing 。 This novel is about cross country, I'm not exactly into sports but I don't think you actually need to know about cross country (you will understand what it's talking about) and there were so many things that a person could relate to。The way relationship b/w sisters Stella and Ellie Steckler is portrayed is real。 I mean I get it b/w siblings if one is better a What a great read。。。I honestly loved this book。 After reading [they wish they were us] I really started liking Jessica Goodman's writing 。 This novel is about cross country, I'm not exactly into sports but I don't think you actually need to know about cross country (you will understand what it's talking about) and there were so many things that a person could relate to。The way relationship b/w sisters Stella and Ellie Steckler is portrayed is real。 I mean I get it b/w siblings if one is better at something the other one feels like he/she is not doing good enough。 There is love b/w them but at the same time there is competition ,fight。。 that's how siblings are。Also the feminism, how boys are given more freedom than girls ,how they are considered more important and strong than girls even though girls they are better than boys and 。This book also portrayed the lack of attention of authorities 。。they just want to do enough so that the others would not criticize them。 Using there powers to take revenge。 So there were a lot of things you can actually find in this bookNow come the mystery part 。。。I would say initial chapters were a little slow。 The disappearance of girl happened like halfway but still you do get to know a lot of things 。Stella was really competitive (the others were also) but she was like really competitive。 She never trusted any other person but when a new girl Mila Keene arrives she started telling her feelings to her。 She was a tough girl who never showed emotion on the outside。 Her sister Ellie was opposite of her。 She had friends, is a party girl and a little secret。 She is also competitive but not so fierce as Stella。 The common thing b/w them is Mila 。 She and Ellie soon become good friends。 But suddenly she disappears and local police officer is after Steckler sisters。Tbh I couldn't actually figured out the true criminal。。 I kinda suspected a little but suspects keep changing so I would say it surely was a good mystery。 I liked it better than they wish they were us(in that I figured out the suspect)。。This book felt inclined more towards reality。So overall if you are looking for a teen mystery。。。they wish they were us is amazing。 There are other characters (some are annoying and some really nice) so go for it。 。。。more

The description of this books suggests it’s about a missing girl but she doesn’t go missing until halfway into the plot。 It’s really a YA novel about sisters on a cross country high school team and all the drama that it entails which was not that original。 The sister dynamic is an interesting premise but it fell flat。

Or was it one of the Steckler sisters, overly competitive runners and allegedly prone to violence? The book alternates perspectives between Ellie and Stella, the Steckler sisters and top runners on Edgewater's high school cross-country team。 This is definitely a keeps-you-guessing until the end book, and I know the killer took a lot of people by surprise (I'll confess: I peaked)。 Even having glanced at the last few pages, there were still loads of secrets to unravel and plenty of plot to keep me enthralled。 Goodman is masterful, and I can't wait to read more of her work。I also can't leave out of this review how much this book speaks to me as a young woman。 I am an adult (27) and not a high-schooler, but its commentary on the expectations of women in society and sports, the double-standards and sexism, and increased fear for their safety women face--it's all ingrained in the plot in a way that doesn't seem preachy and instead should make all women mad that we have to put up with things being this way。 Stella and Ellie each challenge the norms of what it means to be a "young" girl in their own way, and it really makes you think。Thank you to Penguin Teen for my eARC!
