This was one of the first fantasy novels I read and it has got me hooked, I really enjoyed this book and the way that Kiran Millwood Hargrave uses different aspects of all the Dracula stories。

I found some of the other reviews a bit confusing in referencing characters without their names。 To be clear, there's a story of twin sisters and one of them loves another girl。 A bit meh for me as too many bad things happen with sheer awfulness, not scary things that are supernatural or build a gothic terror, just very human awfulness。 Doesn't fit as a gothic novel at all, more a misery fiction。 Would also (as a 42 year old) not let a young adult read it。 I found some of the other reviews a bit confusing in referencing characters without their names。 To be clear, there's a story of twin sisters and one of them loves another girl。 A bit meh for me as too many bad things happen with sheer awfulness, not scary things that are supernatural or build a gothic terror, just very human awfulness。 Doesn't fit as a gothic novel at all, more a misery fiction。 Would also (as a 42 year old) not let a young adult read it。 。。。more

Okay so I'm definitely an idiot that didn't read the back blurb properly meaning I didn't realize this was supposed to be the background story to the brides of Dracula until legit the very end of the book。 Which I think means I did not get the correct reading experience, lolBut even with that knowledge the novel feels pretty bland。 The characters weren't particularly interesting, the plot never really felt like it got going until the very end where it abruptly ended。 Honestly the ending really l Okay so I'm definitely an idiot that didn't read the back blurb properly meaning I didn't realize this was supposed to be the background story to the brides of Dracula until legit the very end of the book。 Which I think means I did not get the correct reading experience, lolBut even with that knowledge the novel feels pretty bland。 The characters weren't particularly interesting, the plot never really felt like it got going until the very end where it abruptly ended。 Honestly the ending really left me feeling robbed of the actual story and made it seem like not a single thing in the entire book mattered。Plus the word "crimson" was really over-used, jfc 。。。more

They came to call us the three sisters - two dark, one fair - and worse。 The beautiful damned, the brides of Dracul, the deathless girls。 For what this book promised me, I have to say I was disappointed。I do not know the story of Dracula as well as I wish, yet I love it all the same。 This book gives promise of a prologue of sorts, the story of the brides, the women who lived with him, feeded with him, kept Jonathan Harker imprisoned within the castle。 Yet, we get none of that。Simply They came to call us the three sisters - two dark, one fair - and worse。 The beautiful damned, the brides of Dracul, the deathless girls。 For what this book promised me, I have to say I was disappointed。I do not know the story of Dracula as well as I wish, yet I love it all the same。 This book gives promise of a prologue of sorts, the story of the brides, the women who lived with him, feeded with him, kept Jonathan Harker imprisoned within the castle。 Yet, we get none of that。Simply put, this book was rather。。。well, rather dull。And I really dislike calling a book dull, but I can't find another word for it。One thing I did really enjoy was the f/f relationship, between Mira and Lillai, the connection didn't feel forced and the romance was actually really sweet。I was expecting a lot more of Kem & Albu, Kisaiya annoyed me, and Fen was a good character but not nearly fleshed out enough。All in all, really disappointed with what I was given。 。。。more

I did like this reimagining of the brides of Dracula, however it felt rushed and was less detailed and thorough than I wanted it to be unfortunately。 I feel like the world the author created could have been really juicy with more fleshing out。 The book is quite small, a very fast read, so I understand why this is but the story is very quest like and should have been longer to fully explore the potential that it had。 The beginning was very rich, I really loved the details that were provided about I did like this reimagining of the brides of Dracula, however it felt rushed and was less detailed and thorough than I wanted it to be unfortunately。 I feel like the world the author created could have been really juicy with more fleshing out。 The book is quite small, a very fast read, so I understand why this is but the story is very quest like and should have been longer to fully explore the potential that it had。 The beginning was very rich, I really loved the details that were provided about the Traveller’s lifestyle and lore but again, so much more could have been given with a longer story。 。。。more

This story is about retelling of Dracula so I was really wanted to read this book。 To be honest I was a little disappointed。 I found the writing style of the author beautiful in places but found it very slow。 This book wasn't scary or dark at all which I was expecting it to be。 Despite being slow, I enjoyed the characters, especially Mira。 I always enjoyed strong female characters。 I liked the culture and heritage shown throughout the book。 I just felt there wasn't enough of Dracula for Dracula' This story is about retelling of Dracula so I was really wanted to read this book。 To be honest I was a little disappointed。 I found the writing style of the author beautiful in places but found it very slow。 This book wasn't scary or dark at all which I was expecting it to be。 Despite being slow, I enjoyed the characters, especially Mira。 I always enjoyed strong female characters。 I liked the culture and heritage shown throughout the book。 I just felt there wasn't enough of Dracula for Dracula's book。 This book will not stop me from reading more books by this author。 。。。more

3。5 starsI had very high expectations for this book entirely due to the cover。。。 which is a poor way to go into a book, I know。 It wasn’t exactly what I was expecting and I found a few minor issues with the pacing and some character connections, but overall it was solid。 I will say that I enjoyed the fable-like quality at the very end, and the last five pages or so had the biggest impact by far。

I enjoyed the story but it ended disappointing me as the ending felt rushed。But I felt the world building in places was a little bit flat and the characters were fine but not really fleshed out。 Considering we spend the book in Lil's head, I feel like we really knew nothing of her life, before the attack。 And her attraction to Mira comes out of nowhere。 I also thought it would be more of their lives as Vampires instead of just a small chapter on the aftermath so that was a bit disappointing as i I enjoyed the story but it ended disappointing me as the ending felt rushed。But I felt the world building in places was a little bit flat and the characters were fine but not really fleshed out。 Considering we spend the book in Lil's head, I feel like we really knew nothing of her life, before the attack。 And her attraction to Mira comes out of nowhere。 I also thought it would be more of their lives as Vampires instead of just a small chapter on the aftermath so that was a bit disappointing as it was marketed as a Vampire book。 And Dracula the main villain is barely in it。 。。。more

I bought the audiobook version of this on sale and wasn't sure what to expect, based on the varying reviews I kept my expectations pretty neutral and was not disappointed。 Don't get me wrong, this book didn't blow me away but I genuinely loved Lil and Kizzy's journey together。 The world from Lil's perspective was perfectly captivating, it was a great backstory to the tale of Dracula's brides。 I bought the audiobook version of this on sale and wasn't sure what to expect, based on the varying reviews I kept my expectations pretty neutral and was not disappointed。 Don't get me wrong, this book didn't blow me away but I genuinely loved Lil and Kizzy's journey together。 The world from Lil's perspective was perfectly captivating, it was a great backstory to the tale of Dracula's brides。 。。。more

The best way to describe this book is just meh… 🙈It has so much world building that takes up the majority of the book, which makes it feel like it’s going to have a big ending。 But no the ending is just falls so flat and is boring。 The characters are also just super boring, nothing made me care about their stories or have any emotional investment into how their story ended。 I feel like it had so much potential to be such a good story but just missed the mark so badly! 2。5/5Swerves between bits I quite liked and bits I didn't care about at all。 Genuinely baffled as to why she doesn't just translate the word 'shit' into English when literally the entire book is what we can assume is translated Romanian - I sympathise if we're talking about titles or culturally specific ideas, but a swearword? Also kinda felt that the F/F pairing was a bit underdeveloped, would've liked them to spend more time together before it was literally read as being the protagonist's fate 2。5/5Swerves between bits I quite liked and bits I didn't care about at all。 Genuinely baffled as to why she doesn't just translate the word 'shit' into English when literally the entire book is what we can assume is translated Romanian - I sympathise if we're talking about titles or culturally specific ideas, but a swearword?
