Summary

A trans boy enters a throw-down battle for the title of Homecoming King with the boy he dumped last summer in ZR Ellor's contemporary YA debut。

Jeremy Harkiss, cheer captain and student body president, won’t let coming out as a transgender boy ruin his senior year。 Instead of bowing to the bigots and outdate school administration, Jeremy decides to make some noise—and how better than by challenging his all-star ex-boyfriend, Lukas for the title of Homecoming King?

Lukas Rivers, football star and head of the Homecoming Committee, is just trying to find order in his life after his older brother’s funeral and the loss long-term girlfriend—who turned out to be a boy。 But when Jeremy threatens to break his heart and steal his crown, Lukas kick starts a plot to sabotage Jeremy’s campaign。

When both boys take their rivalry too far, the dance is on the verge of being canceled。 To save Homecoming, they’ll have to face the hurt they’re both hiding—and the lingering butterflies they can’t deny。

Thank god it’s over, it was so painfully relatable in a way only someone who questions their gender and sexuality every single day can relate to and it’s exhausting, I had to restart this book because of it and the only reason that I got through it so fast after restarting it was because I wanted to end so bad。

I remember that being a teenager often felt like everything was falling apart。 Every thing you feel is at 100% constantly, a kind of desperation I just don’t feel anymore, thank god。 I may just be past the point where I can empathize with the level of anger and needless miscommunication in this book。 I stuck with it because I love books about my hometown, and I do think it’s gets better as it goes, but both MCs (although Jeremy more so) were so exhausting I wanted to stop reading multiple times。

DNF at 24%。 I don't usually review on Bookstagram books that I DNF。 I figure if I can't finish it, I shouldn't really put a review out there in the world since I didn't read the entire thing。 I do usually make a small note on Goodreads about why I didn't finish it。 That's mostly for my future self in case I forget and try to pick the book up again。 A lot of times, I DNF just because I'm bored and the book isn't grabbing me。 Many times I recognize that the book just isn't for me。And then there's DNF at 24%。 I don't usually review on Bookstagram books that I DNF。 I figure if I can't finish it, I shouldn't really put a review out there in the world since I didn't read the entire thing。 I do usually make a small note on Goodreads about why I didn't finish it。 That's mostly for my future self in case I forget and try to pick the book up again。 A lot of times, I DNF just because I'm bored and the book isn't grabbing me。 Many times I recognize that the book just isn't for me。And then there's this crap。I got this book on @librofm and started listening to it a few days ago。 The premise sounded fun: a high school boy, who is trans, is running against his ex-boyfriend for homecoming king。 It sounds like a second-chance romance and looks very rom-com in description and with the cover art。 But I quickly just got pissed。 So, maybe the author is trying to point out that just because a person is trans, it doesn't mean they're a good person。 Maybe。 But Jeremy is a horrible excuse for a human being。 He thinks only about himself, exclusively。 He literally expects everyone to worship him。 That literal verbage is repeated。 Often。 He also makes fun of anyone who isn't popular。 The other MC is his ex, Lucas, who is autistic, bit no one knows except Jeremy。 But it's a terrible representation and flimsy。 Already at 24%, Lucas is becoming more and more selfish, just like Jeremy。 I found myself getting more and more angry as I listened to this, so I had to #dnf it。 It's terrible。 。。。more

I’m honestly not sure how to review this; mainly because it’s not as close to my usual books as I thought。 To start- this is a great choice for anyone who really enjoys the freshly out trans stories, or even just stories about the queer struggle, and overcoming hardships when it seems like the world is against you。 If I was into those types of books, this would be 5 stars。 I personally would rate this 2。5 stars for relevance to my own enjoyment of books and stories, but that’s just because I don I’m honestly not sure how to review this; mainly because it’s not as close to my usual books as I thought。 To start- this is a great choice for anyone who really enjoys the freshly out trans stories, or even just stories about the queer struggle, and overcoming hardships when it seems like the world is against you。 If I was into those types of books, this would be 5 stars。 I personally would rate this 2。5 stars for relevance to my own enjoyment of books and stories, but that’s just because I don’t really enjoy reading about the struggles of queer characters, having gone through it so personally myself。 I knew there was going to be a little bit of that going in, but I was hoping the gay romance would be the main focus, not transphobia and homophobia。 So definitely a mistake on my part and not at all on the author。 The way the author never once mentions jeremys deadname, and how he explains jeremys feelings around being called she/her pretty accurately conveys how it feels in real life too, which is something I haven’t seen in most media。 Basically, this book was great if you like the story。 The only other thing I didn’t like was how long it took Jeremy to realize that he was being an asshole to the people around him, but that’s just because of how I grew up and my own personal experiences so again, not really helpful for someone else trying to decide wether to read the book or not! 。。。more

Further comments to come after I draft a letter to the author asking how he managed to call me out on the way I’ve handled many situations that he wrote about with uncanny similarity to what I’ve been through in real life 💚

The narrator was great, it took me way too long to realize that it was only one narrator they were that good!! This is definitely a book I recommend, the audiobook especially because it was just so great to hear all the emotions。 。。。more

I really liked the idea behind this book but in the end I though that all of the characters were extremely petty and self centered which made the story a bit annoying。 Although in the end the couples paired up the way the readers want them to, it is still mostly unsatisfying。

To start with the positives, the cover art and premise of this book is amazing - but this is also where the disappointment lies。 This story had so much promise (lovers to rivals to lovers again! navigating identity, gender, and sexuality, own voices writing about trans issues), but unfortunately not the ability to execute it。 This story suffers from having too much in it and a far more skilled writer may have been able to make it work, but the prose and ability to plot is lacking considerably。 T To start with the positives, the cover art and premise of this book is amazing - but this is also where the disappointment lies。 This story had so much promise (lovers to rivals to lovers again! navigating identity, gender, and sexuality, own voices writing about trans issues), but unfortunately not the ability to execute it。 This story suffers from having too much in it and a far more skilled writer may have been able to make it work, but the prose and ability to plot is lacking considerably。 The main characters are insufferable and self-absorbed。 I'm not saying that trans characters need to behave as saints to be sympathized with (De-Transition, Baby is evidence of that), but there is a point where it is impossible to root for them in anyway because their motives are non-existence or do not make any sense! Aside from that, the dialogue was chunky and often unrealistic, and the story relied heavily on telling the readers repeatedly about the characters instead of showing it (or trusting the reader to figure this out on their own)。 There are a few moments in which the promise of the story shines through, but largely this book was jumbled and clumsy。 。。。more
