This book taught me a lot, about life-religion-different views on life-truth seeking-dark side of humanity and also the good side it was well worth it。

。。。more

I knew about the game before I knew of the book but didn't play the game。 I was familiar with the concept and was interested in the world building。 I read this at a time when most of what I was reading was post apocalyptic so I really wanted to like this book but it failed to interest me。It's like a bad movie that everyone loved, so I stuck with it wondering when it would turn around and redeem itself。 The ending only made everything worse。No Spoilers。The Artyom isn't a character so much as a ve I knew about the game before I knew of the book but didn't play the game。 I was familiar with the concept and was interested in the world building。 I read this at a time when most of what I was reading was post apocalyptic so I really wanted to like this book but it failed to interest me。It's like a bad movie that everyone loved, so I stuck with it wondering when it would turn around and redeem itself。 The ending only made everything worse。No Spoilers。The Artyom isn't a character so much as a vehicle for this story。 He doesn't really DO anything。 He's given a MacGuffin early on and everything that happens after is just a series of random events like tourist spots that are a must see along the way。 I'm amazed he was even able to walk with all the plot armor he was wearing。 Seriously, any time it looks like he might have to come up with a clever solution to the problem he's stumbled into, something else happens leaving him free to go until he needs finds the next Deus Ex Machina so we can be railroaded to the next point in the story。The character even implies, at one point, that everything that's happened to him must be a kind of god-like intervention making sure he ends up where he's destined to be。 All I could think was, "Did the author's creation just refer to the author as the divine creator?"Despite all that, the book wasn't boring。 The world is well built and I liked the different sections and sub-societies we meet along the way。 I was just bothered that the main character wasn't half a deep as the sheets of paper he was written on。 。。。more

A meandering trip through metro-as-metaphor for various social constructs。 I found it difficult to stay engaged。 There was some imagination put into the world building, but the descriptions are brief and rare so make sure not to blink or you’ll miss them。

I loved this setting。 It was the reason why I picked this book up。 Trapped in the Metro beneath Moscow, humanity tries to survive after a nuclear fallout。 And I have to say at times I felt the claustrophobic nature of the setting。 But that's just about the only thing I liked about this book。 First thing you are greeted with is 50 pages of info-dumping。 Just straight info dumping。 Isn't this rule number one you learn as writer? And it continues throughout the entire book。 The protagonist is a young man who knows just about nothing about the metro and therefore prompts info-dumbs by other characters all the time。 It is not necessary to explain how there's a miniature faction of human believes in the metro。 Just show me things。 Next, the plot。 Ufff。 Meandering would be kind。 The hardships Artjom gets put through seem to be of no consequence and do not further the plot in any way。 His motivation is flimsy at best with putting his life at risk for some stranger he talked to for about 20 minutes。 Aside from him just being plain annoying。 I am not saying it's an unrealistic portrayal for a 17 y/o guy。 It's just not a very likeable character because of his stupidity and arrogance。The absolute most infuriating thing is that there is no female character。 Not one。 Maybe his mother。 Who died when Artjom was just a baby。 The only other times that women are even mentioned are when talking about prostitution or cooking。 There are maybe two women that get a name。 Both of them are only seen cooking or taking care of the children。 There is no discussion about that either。 They just。 Don't exist? So yeah, despite being fairly famous, I would not recommend picking up this series。 Surely, there's better post-apocalyptic fantasy or Russian-rooted fantasy/sci-fi。 。。。more

I hate calling this novel overrated, but in many ways - when considered on its own - it is。 However, it's also very special due to what it created。 Dmitry Glukhovsky began writing Metro 2033 when he was only 18 and for some time it was actually a group project, wherein fans could take part in finishing the story by suggesting changes as each chapter appeared online。 Perhaps it is the author's then relative inexperience with writing sci-fi and this lack of a clear unifying vision that make the bo I hate calling this novel overrated, but in many ways - when considered on its own - it is。 However, it's also very special due to what it created。 Dmitry Glukhovsky began writing Metro 2033 when he was only 18 and for some time it was actually a group project, wherein fans could take part in finishing the story by suggesting changes as each chapter appeared online。 Perhaps it is the author's then relative inexperience with writing sci-fi and this lack of a clear unifying vision that make the book feel a little confused at times, but nevertheless it remains an enjoyable and highly atmospheric read。 An intriguing post-apocalyptic vision of life after a nuclear war for communities of survivors in the Moscow Metro。Glukhovsky took a slightly philosophical detour with Metro 2034, which was not fully successful, and finished his trilogy on a political note in Metro 2035 - where his literary style matured。 But several months after the second book's release in 2009, the author launched a project called Universe of Metro 2033; he invited writers from across the world to tell tales of the post-apocalypse in their hometowns and regions, within the limits and principles of the Metro franchise。 The series gained popularity and grew, becoming quite the success story in Eastern Europe, as writers from Russia, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, even Italy and the UK, took part in the project。 It is here that some of the franchise's true gems were created, such as Robert J。 Szmidt's Wieża (The Tower) or Tullio Avoledo's Le radici del cielo (The Roots of Heaven)。The first Metro novel was adapted into a video game of the same name in 2010, in 2013 came its sequel Metro: Last Light, and finally a third instalment called Metro Exodus arrived in 2019。 A comic book set in the US came out and a film adaptation of the original Russian book is said to be in the works。 Even though Metro 2033 is a perfectly enjoyable post-apocalyptic novel, it's not really comparable to the classic sci-fi works of Stanisław Lem or the Strugatsky Brothers。 Nevertheless, it holds a special place in my heart and is of great importance as the spark that created a hugely successful multimedia franchise。 。。。more
