This is a collection of largely forgettable short stories based in the Doctor Who universe。A couple would have made better novels but otherwise I found this rather lightweight and a bit pointless。I felt giving it two stars was a bit harsh hence the three star rating。

If you enjoy Doctor Who, you will enjoy these little tales。 I enjoyed some more than others (similar to others who have reviewed the collection)。 However, it was a pleasant and easy little read。 If you are unfamiliar with Doctor Who, you may struggle to fully enjoy each tale。 I mean this only in that I believe I enjoyed them more because I was familiar with certain characters/species and having that familiarity led to a quicker “personal connection” with each tale。

I have to say that I am not a regular Doctor Who reader (usually reading only specials and those lost episodes from my childhood hiding behind the sofa) but this one caught my eye and I have to say I really enjoyed it。In simple terms think of famous Grimm Brothers stories re-told with the characters being the more famous characters and monsters from the recent series - although not explicitly stated my guess is from the Matt Smith tenure。So in short a series of tales with very much classic fairy I have to say that I am not a regular Doctor Who reader (usually reading only specials and those lost episodes from my childhood hiding behind the sofa) but this one caught my eye and I have to say I really enjoyed it。In simple terms think of famous Grimm Brothers stories re-told with the characters being the more famous characters and monsters from the recent series - although not explicitly stated my guess is from the Matt Smith tenure。So in short a series of tales with very much classic fairy tale vibes but most certainly set in and around the universe of Doctor Who and remarkably easy and fun to read too。 。。。more

This was an unexpectedly well-written sci-fi novel。 I thought it might be rather corning mixing Doctor Who with fairy Tales, but the author pulled it off with a nice flare of creativity and a novel approach to some sci-fi within the world of sci-fi。

This was a truly enjoyable collection of classic fairy tales re-worked to include Doctor Who lore。 You'll find some familiar stories in here, mixed with Who villains and several versions of the Doctor。 There are sixteen stories in total, and they are quite brief (to my dismay) but they read quickly and truly feel like traditional fairy tales。 I'll briefly list the stories here and what familiar characters they include: The Garden of Statues features The Weeping Angels; Frozen Beauty features the This was a truly enjoyable collection of classic fairy tales re-worked to include Doctor Who lore。 You'll find some familiar stories in here, mixed with Who villains and several versions of the Doctor。 There are sixteen stories in total, and they are quite brief (to my dismay) but they read quickly and truly feel like traditional fairy tales。 I'll briefly list the stories here and what familiar characters they include: The Garden of Statues features The Weeping Angels; Frozen Beauty features the Wirrns (from the Fourth Doctor arc The Ark in Space); The Emperor Dalek's New Clothes features the Daleks and rebels; Helana and the Beast features the 12th Doctor; The Three Brothers Gruff features Sontaran Starn; Jak and the Wormhole features the Nimon (minotaur-like creatures); The Twins in the Wood features Gallifrey; Andiba and the Four Slitheen features the famous Raxicoricofallipatorians; The Gingerbread Trap features the Krillitane (shape-shifters which prefer Bat form, as in the episode School Reunion); Cinderella and the Magic Box features the 11th Doctor and vampires; Snow White and the Seven Keys to Doomsday features a doomsday machine and portals; The Grief Collector features the 10th Doctor; Rose Riding Hood features Rose, the 9th Doctor and Zygons; Sirgwain and The Green Knight features Ice Warriors; The Scruffy Piper features the 2nd Doctor and Cybermen/cybermats; and The Three Little Sontarans features the Rutan (from the Horror of Fang Rock) and Sontaran Starn。 My three favorites were The Garden of Statues, Frozen Beauty and Helana and the Beast。 My least favorite were The Three Brothers Gruff, The Scruffy Piper and the Three Little Sontarans。 I really don't care for Sontarans and found their stories boring, frankly, and I never really liked the 2nd Doctor very much。 This was a really fun collection and I can definitely see myself revisiting these stories in the future。 If you're a fan of the Whoniverse outside of the Doctor, I'd surely recommend it。 。。。more

This book should havce been titled something like 'TARDIS twists': it's quite dissapointing that most of the stories are human fairy tales with names switched over, rather than building on the bits we know of time Lord society and mythos。 The stories can be quite contradictory, and overall, a bit weak if you were hoping for something more expansive with the premise。 If you get on with the premise of human fairy tales tweaked for the whoniverse, though, it could be pretty entertaining。 I had an o This book should havce been titled something like 'TARDIS twists': it's quite dissapointing that most of the stories are human fairy tales with names switched over, rather than building on the bits we know of time Lord society and mythos。 The stories can be quite contradictory, and overall, a bit weak if you were hoping for something more expansive with the premise。 If you get on with the premise of human fairy tales tweaked for the whoniverse, though, it could be pretty entertaining。 I had an odd eperience with the audiobook - my adhd usually can't concentrate on them, and I found details were easy to loose in all but the best stories。 However, the vocal talent was magnificent, with Michelle Gomez, Nicholas Briggs, Dan Starkey, Adjoa Andoh, Tom Baker, Paul Mcgann and Yasmin Paige - and Samuel Anderson, showing more range in a narrative role than the character of Danny Pink ever allowed him - all making it worthwhile。Stories Ranked:The Garden of shadows - sad and sweet and wistful, but Joanna Page's reading was kind of pedestrian。Frozen Beauty - I enjoyed that this one leaned more into sci fi potential, but can't remember much of it。Cinderella and the magic box - there was a cute cameo and some nice intruige, but the majority of the story was one of the more of the 'cut and paste from the original' ones。The twins in the wood - I enjoyed this one, again leaned a bit further into sci fi, but I also liked that rather than any explicit Earth fairy tale, it reminded me more of the historical mystery of the boys in the tower。 For a fairy tale collection with elements of who, I thought it would be much better if it utilised globalised settings, international fairy tales, or historical stories as a basis even if it didn't deliver much on the sci fi part。 Sadly, the collection as a whole dissapointed on all those points too。Three Little Sontarons - Energetically read by Dan Starkey with more joy and less seriousness than most stories here, I was pleasantly surprised that the story showed the title characters as tacticians, rather than going for pure comedy。 Not made up of much, but fun to listen to in the moment。Jak and the wormhole - Greatly read by Tom Baker - but again, copy and pasted with a few differences from the original, and I can't remember anything that went on。Snow white and the 7 keys to doomsday - I know people tend not to like this one, but I'm an outlier。 Despite being titled like the 'copy and pasted' stories, this story had more fun with sci fi elements and I thought it was a fun call back to classic who。 Little Rose Riding Hood: very sweet, with another cute cameo - but it irks me to see something as important as the Bad Wolf, which is meant to be one of the most powerful entities in the universe - cast as a copy and paste fairytale。 It also has the problem of a few stories that adding in cameos and references breaks its own logic as ostensibly a collection of fairy tales passed down to time lord children - the Doctor already referenced time lord legends and history enough as it was, so why wouldn't he reference these stories? The gingerbread trap: This is another more derivative story, but again with added sci fi elements : plus it was fun to have the underused krillitane appear again。 The Scruffy Piper - unmemorable, literally forgot all of it as soon as it was over。Helana and the beast - similiar: the cameos of one person in particular start to seem overwraught as well - the fewer of them there were, they would have made much more of an impact。Andiba and the 3 slitheen - very much like the sonatarons story, you expect it to be just comedy filler but it's well narrated, paced, makes the most of its aliens as a threat, and has pragmatic characters that aren't purely archetypal。The grief collector - a few issues with this, but sublimely read by Michelle Gomez and a very good example of an folklore archetype that seems like more than a repeat play。 The metaphoric nature of the story and slightly more ornate language allow it to overcome its flaws and be, perhaps the first story in the collection to leave a lasting impression rather than a passing interest。The brothers gruff - didn't expect two sontaron stories, or for them to be this varied! Again, Mcgann gives a sterling performance, but the story itself isn't particularly memorable。Sirgwain and the green knight - This was a better story - it's always nice for the aliens to be given a bit more to them, morally - and it certainly benefits from using an underused alien that nonetheless has built up a respectable iconography。 As well as a more developed antagonist, the 。。。more

Overall an average collection of stories for the Doctor Who universe。 Obviously limited by the fairytale aspect they range from very straight retellings with only mild Doctor Who elements (Sir Gwain and the Green Knight, The Twins in the Wood) to having the Doctor appear (Cinderella and the Magic Box, The Scruffy Piper)。My favourites were those whose origins were a little obscured (The Garden of Statues, The Grief Collector), those that offered a very clever Doctor Who/sci-fi spin on a classic ( Overall an average collection of stories for the Doctor Who universe。 Obviously limited by the fairytale aspect they range from very straight retellings with only mild Doctor Who elements (Sir Gwain and the Green Knight, The Twins in the Wood) to having the Doctor appear (Cinderella and the Magic Box, The Scruffy Piper)。My favourites were those whose origins were a little obscured (The Garden of Statues, The Grief Collector), those that offered a very clever Doctor Who/sci-fi spin on a classic (The Twins in the Wood, Frozen Beauty) as well as a couple that included the Doctor (The Scruffy Piper, Helana and the Beast)。 There were also a few performances in this audio book I particularly enjoyed; it's hard to go wrong with Nicholas Briggs, Paul McGann or Michelle Gomez reading a story in your ears。 I didn't particularly care for some of the stories that featured some of the more fun monsters (Nimon, Zygons and vampires) but it was still fun to meet some old enemies。Overall a fun little collection - there's something to be found in each story to make it worthwhile listening to - but not exactly a must read unless you're a hardcore Doctor Who fan。 。。。more

“ We are all stories in the end”Steven MoffatThis book has been in my TBR for ages but I finally got around to read it。 At first I was hesitant because dr who is very important to me。 I have to say that i loved each and every one of these fairytales。 The author has taken most of the childhood fairytales we love the most and embellished them to create a doctor who version for all ages with loving characters and tales to remember。

☆☆☆½I was so excited to read this book because it seemed so cool and was but I thought it would be more about Time Lord lore rather than fairy tale stories with a Doctor Who twist, I still enjoyed them though, my favourite definitely being a tie between The Grief Collector and Sirgwain and the Green Knight。

It wasn’t bad but not at all what I expected。 I thought it would be more Gallifreyian original stories such as Zagreus or even Rassilon or Omega but it was earth fairy tales twisted to fit Doctor who。 Once I hit over that disappointment it was okay。 The first and last stories are my favorites

I really wanted this book to be interesting fairy tale style stories from the Doctor Who universe。 Instead it was retelling well-known fairy tales using Doctor Who characters。 I think the best one of the bunch was the Three Little Pigs retold as the Three Little Sontarans。
