¿Cuántas veces no has soñado con revivir algún momento del pasado？ ¿Cuántas veces no has querido cambiar algo de tu trayectoria vital？ Probablemente， esta es una de las cavilaciones que más suelen ronronear por nuestras cabezas。 Esos “Y si…” permeando a través de nuestros pensamientos。 Es algo inherente al ser humano， o eso quiero creer。 Ejemplo de ello son varias películas o novelas: Cuento de Navidad， las recomendables Family Man o The Kid， o la siempre nombrada Regreso al Futuro。 Nos interesa ¿Cuántas veces no has soñado con revivir algún momento del pasado？ ¿Cuántas veces no has querido cambiar algo de tu trayectoria vital？ Probablemente， esta es una de las cavilaciones que más suelen ronronear por nuestras cabezas。 Esos “Y si…” permeando a través de nuestros pensamientos。 Es algo inherente al ser humano， o eso quiero creer。 Ejemplo de ello son varias películas o novelas: Cuento de Navidad， las recomendables Family Man o The Kid， o la siempre nombrada Regreso al Futuro。 Nos interesa el pasado， ver con otros ojos lo que ocurrió y saber， si cambiando alguna decisión （vital o no）， nuestro camino nos llevará a otro lugar。 Pero como estamos advertidos por la ficción， una y otra vez， no suele acabar bien。Sin embargo， Barrio Lejano propone algo diferente。 Eso sí， el punto de partida es exactamente el mismo。 Hiroshi Nakahara se encuentra de regreso a casa tras un viaje de negocios cuando se percata de que， por error， ha tomado un tren que le conduce a su barrio natal。 Sin darse cuenta， paseando por el pueblo， llega hasta el viejo cementerio donde esta enterrada su madre。 Repentinamente， y sin explicación alguna， se ve catapultado a revivir su infancia。 Eso si， conserva sus recuerdos y conocimientos de adulto。 Una vez superado el impacto inicial， Nakahara comienza a buscar un sentido a lo que sucedió años atrás y ver， si de alguna forma， consigue que su padre no desaparezca una noche de verano。Taniguchi， desde el puro costumbrismo， va tejiendo un relato nostálgico que se balancea entre el drama familiar y una reflexión sobre el paso del tiempo。 Por momentos， Nakahara revive -y nos hace vivir- esos idílicos días de felicidad y despreocupación de la infancia， donde las clases y poco más abarrotaba de preocupaciones nuestras mentes。 Barrio lejano es una historia introspectiva， que busca reflexionar sobre las decisiones vitales que tomamos a lo largo de nuestra vida。 Sin embargo， su personaje principal se queda en la mera superficie y la reflexión no llega a tener la profundidad que parece buscar。 Su mayor virtud reside en como el autor aborda una segunda madurez para su protagonista， como redescubre el pasado de su familia， siendo al fin consciente de su ignorancia adolescente。Es este aspecto， esta consciencia adquirida de forma progresiva en cada capítulo， lo que más he disfrutado de la lectura。 Un costumbrismo inmersivo， progresivo y coherente en el mundo de la familia de Hiroshi。 Taniguchi presenta una historia de realismo mágico en la que pretende remover historias familiares del pasado， sin caer en el argumento fácil ni melodramático。 El autor echa un vistazo con afecto a la infancia a la par que busca mostrar los diferentes puntos de vista de una decisión vital。 Barrio Lejano prefiere no perderse en paradojas temporales ni indagar en lo ocurrido， sino solo mostrar una parábola sobre la aceptación y el puro crecimiento personal。 Hablar sobre los anhelos perdidos y las decisiones difíciles sin maldad。 Busca mostrar puntos de vista y comprensión。 Nada más。Todo ello lo hace desde el preciosismo gráfico。 El dibujo hiperrealista de Taniguchi nos transporta hasta el colegio o la vida de pueblo， enfatizando las expresiones faciales de cada personaje y dejando viñetas llenas de detalles y preciosismo。 Por mi mente no paraba de resonar la banda sonora de la fabulosa Recuerdos del ayer。 Quizás falte sensación de movimiento， pero el trazo de un maestro como Taniguchi lo compensa con estampas perfectamente narradas， siempre con ritmo y haciendo fluir la lectura como pocos。 Barrio lejano es una historia de viaje en el tiempo que permite， si no es que lo pretende， hacernos conscientes de nuestro camino en el presente y quitar la lapida sobre ese pasado que tanto nos puede atormentar。Reseña en el blog: https://boywithletters。blogspot。com/2。。。 。。。more

Taniguichi is the first new author for a while that has made me want to devour everything he has ever written。 This is my second journey into his world and it didn't disappoint， although if I was pushed I'd say Furari was my favourite simply because of how it makes the idea of narrative seem so unnecessary。 A Distant Neighborhood is more convention， but it still maintains the same meditative feel of Furari。 The artwork is gorgeously simple and Taniguchi employs the same cinematic techniques to s Taniguichi is the first new author for a while that has made me want to devour everything he has ever written。 This is my second journey into his world and it didn't disappoint， although if I was pushed I'd say Furari was my favourite simply because of how it makes the idea of narrative seem so unnecessary。 A Distant Neighborhood is more convention， but it still maintains the same meditative feel of Furari。 The artwork is gorgeously simple and Taniguchi employs the same cinematic techniques to sweep you along; tilts and slides， dizzy upside down perspectives， heart stopping， suddenly silent panels， sweeping double spreads of soft landscapes。 The narrative is more fleshed out and the central idea of the plot is equally as important as the style and the aesthetics。 While Furari is more beautiful， A Distant Neighborhood is often spine tingling。 It puts you in the head of its protagonist， inviting you not only to feel sympathy but to imagine the strange events he experiences happening to you。 What would it be like to relive your youth？ What singular events in your life would you see differently a second time？ Would you change anything if you could？Hiroshi takes the wrong train home and ends up in his home town for the first time in years。 While visiting the grave of his mother， Hiroshi faints and wakes up in the body and the time of his 14 year old self。 He is forced to revisit the six months leading up to the unexplained disappearance of his father。 It has the feel of once fashionable time travel movies - Groundhog Day， Sliding Doors - but， like those movies， actually harks all the way back to Dickens's Christmas Carol as a story of self reflection and change。 At the beginning we are not told much about Hiroshi's adult life but as we approach the big event of his young life we start to see how much it has informed his adult identity and the crisis of his life。 It becomes a very traditional moral tale about regret， forgiveness and baggage， about the things we carry with us and how they weigh us down and form us。 Taniguchi doesn't delve too deeply into the question of whether or not the past can be altered。 Like Sliding Doors it is fairly clear that paths will readjust and join the original， correct sequence of events eventually， that Hiroshi has no control over his past。 What is increasingly obvious is how Hiroshi has the autonomy and strength to change his present。 It culminates in a bittersweet， open ending that leaves the taste of loss and gain in the back of your throat。Essentially the story is about what we sacrifice and give up， how the paths we choose mean others are no longer available to us。 Hiroshi's father makes his choice and that informs his son's life equally。 It is a story about learning what is important and what to value。 It's a universal emotion， that of the might-have-been。 The events that deviate from Hiroshi's original past （the romance story， new friendships， the altered relationship with his father） can be interpreted as Hiroshi's reflections on past choices， but there is also a definite science-fiction element to the story。 The eerie feeling Hiroshi has of knowing his father will leave contrasts sharply with our imagining of a young teenager living without this awareness。 Taniguchi allows us to imagine what it would be like as a 14 year old with an adult consciousness; confidence in class， appreciation of his light， athletic body， knowledge of the future and how the world will change。 It's the time in our lives when we live most strongly in the present。 A teenager with an appreciation of past， present and future is a terrifying thought。 We feel for Hiroshi， for the great responsibility he shoulders， and question the countless thoughtless acts we commit as young people。There are countless scenes that jumped out at me; the dumbstruck face of Hiroshi when he returns to his childhood home as a teenager and sees his family there waiting for him， the energy he finds on the running track， the euphoria of the swimming scene and the motorcycle ride， the awful contradictions in the sight of Hiroshi the 14 year old drinking at the bar and reflecting on his wife and children， his cautiously joyful return home。 It doesn't surprise me that it has been made into a movie - the book cries out through its visuals and the movement Taniguchi induces through his artwork。 The plot might have it's clichés （for one the satisfying but hackneyed final page that puts in doubt the nature of his "dream" of time travel） but presented so skillfully and empathetically one can't help but be swept along。 I'm already looking forward to the next Taniguchi book。 8 。。。more

If you could do things differently， would you？。。。but more importantly， would it matter？ Can you change the past even if given the chance？ Begin with a man in his late 40s。 He works hard， drinks a little too much， has a young family from which he seems a bit distant。。。 One morning， returning from a business trip， hangover， he takes the wrong train and ends up back in his hometown。 He lands beside his mother's grave where he falls asleep。 When he wakes up， he is now 14， back to his childhood， but If you could do things differently， would you？。。。but more importantly， would it matter？ Can you change the past even if given the chance？ Begin with a man in his late 40s。 He works hard， drinks a little too much， has a young family from which he seems a bit distant。。。 One morning， returning from a business trip， hangover， he takes the wrong train and ends up back in his hometown。 He lands beside his mother's grave where he falls asleep。 When he wakes up， he is now 14， back to his childhood， but with the memory of his "old" life intact。 What to do now but to embark on a journey to find out what can be changed， and what can't be？ I mean， we have all imagined， at some point， what we would do if we were back in middle school with our "adult" memories intact。 How easy it would be to navigate our teens years if we had the benefits of all the experience and knowledge we accumulated over a few decades。。。 So yeah， a bit of a suspicious premise perhaps， but the execution is pretty good。I did not have any trouble with the book; the art is simple and cinematographic， with a nice flow， very deliberate and precise choice of angles， and small gaps between panels; it makes for an easy read。 The story is well paced， interesting enough。 However， I did feel that it wanted to get deeper， but did not quite get there。 There are some philosophical implications about regrets， life experiences， or about one's past and even time in general that were begging to be explored。。。 But maybe this wasn't the point， maybe the point was just to tell this simple story of a men revisiting his childhood， fixing things that can be fixed and putting in perspective others that can't。。。 。。。more

Un homme de 48 ans voyage dans le temps et se réveille dans son corps d'enfant， il a à nouveau 14 ans。 Je ne lis quasiment jamais de Manga et ce qui frappe au premier abord c'est la pauvreté du graphisme。 Le coup de crayon manque de personnalité et l'exploitation du noir et blanc est à des années lumières d'un Chabouté， Larcenet ou même d'Habibi ou Bone。 En fait il n'y a aucun travail sur les ombres ou les nuances de teintes。 Les surfaces pleines semblent coloriées par un robot ou via la fonctio Un homme de 48 ans voyage dans le temps et se réveille dans son corps d'enfant， il a à nouveau 14 ans。 Je ne lis quasiment jamais de Manga et ce qui frappe au premier abord c'est la pauvreté du graphisme。 Le coup de crayon manque de personnalité et l'exploitation du noir et blanc est à des années lumières d'un Chabouté， Larcenet ou même d'Habibi ou Bone。 En fait il n'y a aucun travail sur les ombres ou les nuances de teintes。 Les surfaces pleines semblent coloriées par un robot ou via la fonction "remplissage" de Paint à laquelle on aurait rajouté une texture "quadrillage"。 Il n'empêche qu'on est rapidement emporté par l'histoire et sa poésie。 Probablement parce que dans ce rêve éveillé on ne peut s'empêcher de se demander : qu'aurions nous fait à sa place ？L'histoire d'amour m'a mis encore plus mal à l'aise que Twillight car Tomoko tombe sous le charme d'Hiroshi non pas pour ses qualités d'enfants mais bien pour ce qu'il parvient à faire grâce à son âge réel : faire de la moto， une multiplication ou parler anglais。 Trop facile， il y a là-dedans une sorte de "Born sexy yesterday" inversé singulièrement gênant。 Mais rien autant que le trouble de cet homme de 48ans à la vue d'une gamine de 14 ans en maillot de bain。 Les japonais ont un vrai problème avec la sexualisation infantile。 Plus globalement la place des femmes dans le bouquin est franchement sexiste même si on peut l'expliquer par le contexte。 Les japonaises n'ont pas eu 68。。。Hiroshi a 48ans mais les autres enfants eux-mêmes sont terriblement "vieux" dans leur tête。 Si l'auteur nous fait bien ressentir le bonheur de retrouver son corps d'ados il n'envisage jamais ce voyage dans le temps que sous son angle positif。 J'aurai aimé voir Hiroshi assister à des éclats de rire entre camarades devant des blagues puériles， d'enfants。 Constater l'inconséquence， la pauvreté des conversations que l'on peut avoir à cet âge。。。 Non， la tristesse d'Hiroshi n'est exploré que via la disparition de son père et c'est ce dénouement qui m'a le plus déçu dans Quartier Lointain。 D'abord on ne comprend toujours pas pourquoi l'auteur nous montre le père heureux dans sa famille pendant 250 pages pour ensuite révéler une profonde mélancolie sur les 20 dernières。 Certes cela crée un bel effet de surprise mais cela n'a aucun sens。 Non seulement toute l'émotion est annihilée mais c'est même le moteur principale de l'intrigue qui est décrédibilisé。 Et c'est dommage parce que Quartier Lointain est prenant。 Je l'ai lu avidement， particulièrement parce que j'étais impatient de connaitre un dénouement qui s'avèrera ma plus grosse déception。Sa mère nous avait été dépeinte comme n'ayant jamais compris le départ de son mari : elle refuse de se re-marier， l'attend et n'a jamais avoué la vérité à Hiroshi。 Pourquoi ？ alors que celui-ci en a souffert toute sa vie。 Pourquoi ne pas même en parler à la grand-mère qui s'est laissé mourir， pourquoi laisser ses enfants dans l'inconnu alors qu'en 1963 "bis" elle l'avoue le soir même au Hiroshi enfant-adulte: "ça devait finir par arriver， je le savais" ！ Pire elle nous explique que son mari était "un homme bon"。 Enfin c'est ridicule : son père s'est conduit comme un salop fini。 Et pourtant Hiroshi ne questionne jamais son père et semble lui pardonner instantanément pour se concentrer sur la façon dont il gère lui-même sa propre famille et en faire un parallèle douteux。 Cette parentalité problématique se résout en 4 bulles car Hiroshi est désormais devenu un bon papa。 Un livre plaisant mais frustrant。 。。。more
