Summary

The familiar Ken Follett recipe

With The Evening and the Morning, Ken Follett has created another doorstopper of a novel, a whopping 900+ pages, and there's plenty of action。 Opening with a Viking raid on the city of Combe, an attack in which disaster is averted when a quick thinking boat builder named Edgar sounds an alarm and manages to escape, the book centers around three characters - enterprising Edgar, a Norman woman named Ragna who becomes English royalty through a marriage to Eolderman Wilwulf, and an evil bishop named With The Evening and the Morning, Ken Follett has created another doorstopper of a novel, a whopping 900+ pages, and there's plenty of action。 Opening with a Viking raid on the city of Combe, an attack in which disaster is averted when a quick thinking boat builder named Edgar sounds an alarm and manages to escape, the book centers around three characters - enterprising Edgar, a Norman woman named Ragna who becomes English royalty through a marriage to Eolderman Wilwulf, and an evil bishop named Wynstan。 Through the course of the novel, Ragna has 4 children by 2 different fathers, at least 1 of which is against her wishes, gains power and loses it several times, is "set aside" (divorced in favor of concubines), and has a husband murdered。 As far as Edgar is concerned, the love of his life is killed by Vikings but he recovers and proves adept at many occupations, including bridge and ale house building, canal digging and converting a farm into a fishery。 Wynstan is consummate evil, involving himself with murder, theft, rape, vandalism。 When Wynstan is implicated in a counterfeiting ring (replacing silver in coins with copper) by Edgar and Edgar is befriended by Ragna, the principal rivalry in the book is set。 It's a gratifying read and keeps your focus throughout。There are a couple of drawbacks to this book。 Although it outlines the creation of Kingsbridge, a principal town in the later Pillars of the Earth, I tend to think of a "prequel" as something which takes place immediately prior。 This book ends in 1006; Pillars does not really commence until 130 or so years later。 No character in Pillars is alive in this prequel; in fact, the Norman conquest and the reigns of about 9 kings occur in the interim。 Second, and this may be done for effect, I find the language used by Follett when describing violence or sex scenes to be almost too graphic。 I read them with difficulty。Still, the reader of The Evening and the Morning will be satisfied by a tale well told and certainly realistic and well researched with regard to the era。 。。。more

4。5 stars。 Follett is a master storyteller。 Only he can keep me completely engaged for over 900 pages。 His character development is spectacular。 An excellent prequel to Pillars of the Earth。

Much better than column of fire, although I think world without end is still my favorite of the series。

Very mixed, rather tiresome read, different from the other books in this serie。 The end made up for the boring read in the last few paragraphs。

This book did its job, putting me to sleep several nights running。 If he writes another one about Kingsbridge, I think I’ll pass。

‘When the Roman Empire declined, Britain went backward。 As the Roman villas crumbled, the people built one-room wooden dwellings without chimneys。 The technology of Roman pottery—important for storing food—was mostly lost。 Literacy declined。 This period is sometimes called the Dark Ages, and progress was painfully slow for five hundred years。 Then, at last, things started to change。’― Ken Follett, The Evening and the Morning

I liked the first part of this book。 Then, when the bad guys go after Ragna, it became unbearably heavy handed。 One degradation after another, unabated。 As though that is the only way Follett knows how to move a plot forward。 I actually found it sadistic。 Then, in the last 50 pages, the forces of good prevail。 500 pages of torment, 50 pages to right the wrongs。 Yes, Ragna was a smart, resilient woman who endured horrible travails。 My point is that Follett focused on those abuses, not on justice I liked the first part of this book。 Then, when the bad guys go after Ragna, it became unbearably heavy handed。 One degradation after another, unabated。 As though that is the only way Follett knows how to move a plot forward。 I actually found it sadistic。 Then, in the last 50 pages, the forces of good prevail。 500 pages of torment, 50 pages to right the wrongs。 Yes, Ragna was a smart, resilient woman who endured horrible travails。 My point is that Follett focused on those abuses, not on justice being served。 He rushed through that part while prolonging the agony。 Very manipulative writing。 。。。more

I've been reading Ken Follet for a long time since "Eye of the Needle" and "Key to Rebecca"。I've read all of the 4 Kingsbridge books - "Pillars of the Earth" is my all time favorite book。In the series, I would rate this one 3rd with "Column of Fire" last。 This one is a little too dark and depressing。 The writing is better than "Column" but the story lacks the uplifting victories of the others。 I've been reading Ken Follet for a long time since "Eye of the Needle" and "Key to Rebecca"。I've read all of the 4 Kingsbridge books - "Pillars of the Earth" is my all time favorite book。In the series, I would rate this one 3rd with "Column of Fire" last。 This one is a little too dark and depressing。 The writing is better than "Column" but the story lacks the uplifting victories of the others。 。。。more

I liked this prequel to the Kingsbridge series。 There were times when it was difficult to read just because Ken Follett does such a good job writing despicable, wicked, malicious characters that you love to hate。 There were times when I wanted to pull my hair out。 Follett also writes beautiful, courageous and noble characters - and this book has several of them。 Good read。

I loved this story。 Unlike Column of Fire in which Follett was somewhat restricted by historical events and documented personalities, in The Evening and The Morning he has a freer rein to weave his fictional magic。 A fascinating tale set in a period people rarely think about。 As in most of his epic novels, the leading characters are either good or bad。 You get a real feel for how life must have been for people living in England a thousand years ago and that sheds an interesting light on the soci I loved this story。 Unlike Column of Fire in which Follett was somewhat restricted by historical events and documented personalities, in The Evening and The Morning he has a freer rein to weave his fictional magic。 A fascinating tale set in a period people rarely think about。 As in most of his epic novels, the leading characters are either good or bad。 You get a real feel for how life must have been for people living in England a thousand years ago and that sheds an interesting light on the social progress of recent years so many people take for granted in 2021。 。。。more

I really enjoy Ken Follet's story telling。 Easy to read, full of interesting detail。 Even though, for me, this will never match up to the master that is Pillars of the Earth, I did enjoy the story and loved being back in the settings that I have come to know and love through the rest of this series。 I really enjoy Ken Follet's story telling。 Easy to read, full of interesting detail。 Even though, for me, this will never match up to the master that is Pillars of the Earth, I did enjoy the story and loved being back in the settings that I have come to know and love through the rest of this series。 。。。more

4。5 stars I have to admit that my rating is a little sentimental because I have such fond memories of reading The Pillars of the Earth。 Follet returns to form here (after the disappointing second book in the series)。 It is sometimes predictable but it’s so entertaining and immersive and just classic Follet。 I have to recommend it to people who loved Tom Builder and his world。 My biggest complaint is the sex scenes that could have been written by a twelve year old (from a simpler time)!!!!
