Summary

Sparta forged her into a deadly weapon。 Now the gods need her to save the world!

Seventeen-year-old Daphne has spent her entire life honing her body and mind into that of a warrior, hoping to be accepted by the unyielding people of ancient Sparta。 But an unexpected encounter with the goddess Artemis—who holds Daphne's brother's fate in her hands—upends the life she's worked so hard to build。 Nine mysterious items have been stolen from Mount Olympus, and if Daphne cannot find them, the gods' waning powers will fade away, the mortal world will descend into chaos, and her brother's life will be forfeit。

Guided by Artemis's twin—the handsome and entirely-too-self-assured god Apollo—Daphne's journey will take her from the labyrinth of the Minotaur to the riddle-spinning Sphinx of Thebes, team her up with mythological legends such as Theseus and Hippolyta of the Amazons, and pit her against the gods themselves。

A reinterpretation of the classic Greek myth of Daphne and Apollo, Daughter of Sparta, by debut author Claire M。 Andrews turns the traditionally male-dominated mythology we know into a heart-pounding and empowering female-led adventure。

Definitely a new spin on the story。 I liked the uniqueness of the retelling, but I just couldn't get into it。 The writing felt a bit choppy。 Like one sentence didn't quite make sense with the next and I had to keep going back a line or two to make sure I hadn't missed something。 Definitely a new spin on the story。 I liked the uniqueness of the retelling, but I just couldn't get into it。 The writing felt a bit choppy。 Like one sentence didn't quite make sense with the next and I had to keep going back a line or two to make sure I hadn't missed something。 。。。more

I've been waiting to read this for a while and I'm glad I was finally able to check it out! And who is her father? Hopefully we'll get some answers in the sequel, plus more romance! 。。。more

I have been waiting for so long to get my hand on Daughter of Sparta and let me tell you - I wasn't disappointed at all。 Well, I guess in a way I was a little but that's due to the lack of romance throughout this。 Yeah, we get hints and maybe a kiss or two。。 but that's it。 Ugh。 Don't give me chemistry and then basically zero romance。 It just didn't make sense to me。Other than that, I really liked getting to know Daphne。 Even though we started off knowing how her douche of dad really thought of h I have been waiting for so long to get my hand on Daughter of Sparta and let me tell you - I wasn't disappointed at all。 Well, I guess in a way I was a little but that's due to the lack of romance throughout this。 Yeah, we get hints and maybe a kiss or two。。 but that's it。 Ugh。 Don't give me chemistry and then basically zero romance。 It just didn't make sense to me。Other than that, I really liked getting to know Daphne。 Even though we started off knowing how her douche of dad really thought of her - which, yes, broke my heat a little bit。 Then we see her become a little bad ass and go on this really awesome adventure。 Heck, I was having the time of my life once the gods and goddess entered as well。 I'm pretty sure I should have been suspicious of things way before I actually started to。。 but I still ended up enjoying all the twists, turns, and betrayals。I'm not sure what's going to happen in the next book but after that ending - I definitely need to dive into it。 Beyond excited for it all。 。。。more

I loved the plot behind the story but as someone who isn’t super familiar with many of the Greek methodological creatures and gods, I was confused at times in the story。 It’s not my typical genre to read but overall it had a good plot。

Honestly, I think it’s my second favorite Greek god related book that I have read。First off, I love Apollo in this。 He is such a cocky yet lovable a**hole with a heart of gold。 I get major Nikolai Lantsov vibes from him。 And the romance in this book was perfect! This book not only has interesting myths, characters, and romance; it was also so action packed! These characters went through so many battles and trials on their quest and I loved it all。Although I adored this book, some parts of it did feel a little rushed。 I really feel like this story could have been stretched out over a few books instead of crammed into one。 After finishing it, I can understand why the author didn’t do that, but I still think the plot of this book could have been a good series plot overall。Anyway, I LOVED this book and I can’t wait for more stories about Daphne and her friends!(TW: violence, blood, mentioned death by childbirth, nightmares) 。。。more

I rarely ever give something 2 stars but for this book I just had to。 It was a DNF at 60%。I hard the HARDEST time getting into it。 I love Greek mythology and could follow it quite well however if you are a beginner or just like the idea of Greek mythology this will be hard to follow。 Names and places are thrown out as if you already know it, and some of us do, but I still appreciate a little back story every now and again。 This book just name drops all the time and you could be left guessing who I rarely ever give something 2 stars but for this book I just had to。 It was a DNF at 60%。I hard the HARDEST time getting into it。 I love Greek mythology and could follow it quite well however if you are a beginner or just like the idea of Greek mythology this will be hard to follow。 Names and places are thrown out as if you already know it, and some of us do, but I still appreciate a little back story every now and again。 This book just name drops all the time and you could be left guessing who someone is and how the relate to the story in that instance。My biggest gripe is the main character Daphne。 She believes she is a Spartan, which is perfectly fine, however she was all talk and no show。 She makes it seem like she is a total badass but when it comes down to it she always flounders and gets out of something because someone else helps or it’s just good luck。 There was only one scene I enjoyed because she actually fought off 2 men (market scene)。 She is pretty much a conceited a**hole who thinks she is amazing, can do anything, but doesn’t and then constantly feels shame at her actions。My next gripe is with Apollo。 Not even with him but with the way Daphne treats him and how he allows it。 She is constantly saying the Gods are cruel (and Apollo and Artemis prove themselves to be in the beginning) but all I see is him helping her while giving her moon eyes。 I felt absolutely NO connection with them。 And Lykou, who is supposedly in love with Daphne, has to sit back and watch it this entire time。I loved all the side characters for as far as I got but nothing about this book pulled me in or kept my attention longer than 5 minutes。 The author’s writing style just isn’t for me。 She uses “big words” and can be repetitive within a chapter。 You’d think with using the whole dictionary in the book she could use different words to describe everything better。I had high hopes for this book and got nothing out of it。 。。。more

5/5 starsLOVED LOVED LOVED THIS BOOK SO SO MUCH! It was filled with all the tropes I love: romance, action, greek mythology, and powerful women。 It is such a brilliant and powerful take on the Greek mythologies。 Daphne is an amazing heroine who doesn’t take commands from anyone, not even the Greek God, Apollo。 She has had quite the journey from the beginning of the book to the end, sacrificing so much。 The book is fast paced and action-packed and I definitely recommend this book to everyone!!

Her character was wholly believable and relatable, and I loved that for her。 Almost from the start it's clear that there are questions about her parentage, namely who is her father because she is definitely not fully mortal。From what I googled about the myth of Daphne and Apollo, this book is a very very loose retelling。 There is absolutely a romance that stirs up between the two characters。 I'm always unsure of where to land with god-mortal romances in YA。 Like, Daphne, I know Apollo looks like he's 18 but he's actually 1001 and probably f*cked some questionable people and things。 But also 。。。 get your man, girl! Thankfully it didn't feel icky here, and was somewhat of a slow burn。 I ship it **shrugs* I have to admit though, the cock-blocking wolf between the two of them was way funnier than it should have been。 This is the first in what looks to be a duology, but it wraps up really well and could almost be a standalone。 There are still promises of what are to come, with a few mysteries still floating about, such as who is Daphne's father。 You can bet I'll definitely be snagging the sequel first chance I can。 。。。more

This book was pretty good。 I liked the main characters voice, but it was hard for me to feel like the journey was validated。 I wished there was a little more character backstory before Daphne started her journey。 Everyone loves a strong female lead and a forbidden love so it had that going for it。

This book was really good! I love Greek mythology so this was a perfect book。 I did have to google some of the characters to see their myths and I had to refresh my knowledge of the Trojan war, but it had great fight scenes and a little bit of romance。 Apollo was definitely my favorite character and I loved seeing the gods and goddesses interact with the main character。 The ending was a bit “meh” for me, but it does leave it open for a sequel, which I think is coming out next year! I NEED IT!!!

Just okay。The plot was a fairly thin quest that I think was mainly there to serve two purposes: allow the heroes to meet many of the Greek gods/myths/legends, and give an excuse to build an enemies to lovers romance。 This follows several YA tropes including but not limited to-- love triangle, chosen one, secret powers, fancy balls, and a game akin to truth or dare。Aside from over-use of 'envelops' (and accidentally misspelling it as 'envelopes' at least twice) my biggest grievance was how Daphne Just okay。The plot was a fairly thin quest that I think was mainly there to serve two purposes: allow the heroes to meet many of the Greek gods/myths/legends, and give an excuse to build an enemies to lovers romance。 This follows several YA tropes including but not limited to-- love triangle, chosen one, secret powers, fancy balls, and a game akin to truth or dare。Aside from over-use of 'envelops' (and accidentally misspelling it as 'envelopes' at least twice) my biggest grievance was how Daphne's character was treated。 She had strong not-like-other-girls vibes but also her work and achievements were undermined almost as soon as we learned of them and all her accomplishments suddenly were due to the power in her veins and the prophecies surrounding her。 Hard to grow attached to/root for a hero without much agency in their own story。 。。。more

I am passionate about Greek mythology and the premise - a re-telling of Daphne's story with her in control of her own fate - drew me in。 Unfortunately, the style of writing left me feeling detached。 I found it difficult to get drawn into the story and was easily distracted by other stories。 I found the developing feelings between Daphne and Apollo unbelievable in the context of the story, even if he becomes more human with the powers of the Olympians waning。When reading books or watching media, I am passionate about Greek mythology and the premise - a re-telling of Daphne's story with her in control of her own fate - drew me in。 Unfortunately, the style of writing left me feeling detached。 I found it difficult to get drawn into the story and was easily distracted by other stories。 I found the developing feelings between Daphne and Apollo unbelievable in the context of the story, even if he becomes more human with the powers of the Olympians waning。When reading books or watching media, there comes a point when the reasons a secret/fact ISN'T revealed become so very implausible, it is obvious it is being dragged out for the sake of the story and the cliffhanger/next episode/season/movie/book。 The question of Daphne's lineage is this secret being dragged unnecessarily。A disappointing read; I'm glad I only borrowed this book and didn't purchase it。 。。。more
