Honestly I only enjoyed the last 40ish pages。 The first part of the book was a little boring and slow paced especially because it’s for younger audiences, but I think the themes mentioned in here are for anybody。 Even after a lot of research I still can’t manage to find out if it’s based on a real story or not, the postscript has me wondering。 Really for attached to Kensuke near the ending。

I read this book a while back in Primary school when I was around 10 ish。 This book made me fall in love with reading all over again。 I loved this story and although I have forgotten parts of it, I will always remember the relationship between Kensuke and Michael! I really recommend this book!

Sue

Ansie

I don't know what the missing ingredient is, but for me Morpurgo's novels never quite take flight。 I've enjoyed every one I've read。 He is a consummate storyteller and passionate about the things he writes about。 Kensuke's Kingdom is no different and incorporates the themes that characterise his novels - the ocean, travel, sailing, war stories, nature, survival, independence。 Kensuke's Kingdom is a happy tribute to Robinson Crusoe, in which a boy named Michael is shipwrecked on an island somewhe I don't know what the missing ingredient is, but for me Morpurgo's novels never quite take flight。 I've enjoyed every one I've read。 He is a consummate storyteller and passionate about the things he writes about。 Kensuke's Kingdom is no different and incorporates the themes that characterise his novels - the ocean, travel, sailing, war stories, nature, survival, independence。 Kensuke's Kingdom is a happy tribute to Robinson Crusoe, in which a boy named Michael is shipwrecked on an island somewhere north of Australia while attempting to sail around the world with his parents。 There he encounters Kensuke, a Japanese castaway who has been there since the Second World War。 Kensuke and Michael's relationship begins cautiously; Kensuke does not wish to leave the island and therefore prevents Michael from lighting a signal fire。 Eventually, the two become close friends and exist in harmony with the island, the orangutans and each other。 Kensuke teaches Michael to fish and paint。 They share stories of their lives。 Written in Morpurgo's realistic, direct style, the story is entirely believable and engaging。Kensuke's flight from the world is interesting。 It incorporates past and present horrors - Kensuke does not want to return to a human world in which war happens, atomic bombs fall and hunters wish to shoot gibbons and orangutans。 He has found contentedness in his escape from reality and lives at ease with his surroundings。 Michael learns from him and grows to respect him。 The final decision at the end of the book seeks to reverse the expected end of a shipwreck novel, that of rescue and return to civilisation。 Morpurgo places us in Kensuke's debate and the end of the novel is fits perfectly with the development of the characters。 Kensuke represents something lost and something found。 He can teach Michael so much but Michael belongs elsewhere。 And while this distance from the world suits Morpurgo's description of Kensuke well, I felt Michael, the narrator, was shortchanged。 Morpurgo isn't an emotional writer, although he writes emotional stories。 There are scenes in the book, particularly at the end, which I wanted to be dwelt on and pondered over。 Instead, Morpurgo leaves a lot unsaid and assumed。It works, no doubt, for his target audience。 I believe in the power of Morpurgo's storytelling to reach out to children in that difficult reading age between learning the craft and reading long novels。 He approaches important themes, like the environment and our relationship with it, with intent and seriousness。 He also merges a sense of adventure and danger into very simple stories that never seem overdone or ridiculous。 Finally, he creates a sense of the importance of the past to our present, merging the stories of young and old into mutual themes。 I have no criticism of Morpurgo at all; I think he is a great writer。 He doesn't happen to be my favourite but there are so many great writers for young people out there and its just a matter of taste。 I often search for a touch of magic or melodrama in these kind of books - Morpurgo does it differently, but with equal measures of passion for his stories and his readers。 6 。。。more

In fact, the whole experience of this book is just wonderful。 。。。more
