Summary

In this heartfelt love story, three friends find out what it really means to save someone。

Kerry Smith is going to save lives--and so is her best friend, Tim Palmer。 After years of working towards medical school, they are about to sit for their entrance exams。 But on the eve of the new millennium, a classmate goes into cardiac arrest, changing everything。

For nearly eighteen minutes, rising soccer star Joel Greenaway is dead。 For nearly eighteen minutes, Kerry performs CPR on her long-time crush。 And for nearly eighteen minutes, Tim is too shocked to help。 And though they don't yet know it, those eighteen minutes will change the next eighteen years of their lives。

Because as it turns out, saving a life doesn't always guarantee a happy ending。

With his soccer career cut short, Joel lashes out and breaks Kerry's heart by ending their burgeoning relationship with a cruelty that derails her future, while Tim struggles to reconcile his dream of becoming a doctor with the reality of failing to act。 As each struggles to move on from the events of that fateful New Year's Eve, their lives can't seem to stop colliding year after year。 Pulled by their shared histories and her big heart, Kerry soon finds herself picking up the pieces after both broken men。 But when Kerry is the one who needs saving, will anyone be there for her?

As Kerry, Tim, and Joel discover what it means to love, to forgive, and to find your calling, this sweeping novel shows us that there is more than one way to save a life--and more than one path to finding meaning in your own。

Sign me up! How to Save a Life completely drew me in。 Eva Carter was compelled to write it after she saved her partner's life by successfully giving him CPR。 Her mother's experiences as a trauma nurse further encouraged her to pen down this beautiful book。 A heart stops。 Their story starts。 Kerry and Tim have been training and preparing themselves for medical school。 On a fine evening, their perfectly healthy classmate Joel goes into cardiac arrest changing the course of their lives forever。 Kerry performs CPR for eighteen minutes without any help。 Those eighteen minutes alter the next eighteen years of their lives。 What I love about Eva's work is her ability to write about such a delicate topic with earnesty, sensitivity and intelligence。 She explores the thoughts running through her characters' consciousness at every bit of their lives with refreshing honesty and covers a multitude of issues ranging from addiction, teenage heartbreak, irrational bursts of anger, living with a dangerous health condition to ultimately finding your calling。 Written from the perspective of three characters, the story transfers us from their high school to college。 It goes ahead months and years at a time, and transports us to different places in a span of four hundred pages。 The book is filled with its fair share of drama and I found myself frustrated with Kerry, Tim and Joel on numerous occasions。 The ending was slightly abrupt but satisfying in the final analysis。 Carter has commendable storytelling skills and her work is humanising to say the least。 It is a testament to her bravery and strength。 How to Save a Life is recommended for fans of One Day by David Nicholls and Normal People by Sally Rooney。 If you enjoy reading books which take you through multiple timelines, you should definitely add this to your reading list。 It is bound to resonate powerfully with most of the readers。 Critics claimed it to be 'heartrending and uplifting, tragic and triumphant' at the same time, and our thoughts are parallel。 I could not have said it any better。 An impressive, engrossing and moving page-turner。 I feel happy to have been able to read it。 A heartfelt thank you to Pan Macmillan for the gifted copy! How to Save a Life is out now。 🤍 。。。more

This was a poignant read and as a doc it made me think about what could happen in 18 minutes。 Here it affected all the three main characters for 18 years。 it made me feel emotions, and with its different POVs。 I got to delve into all their lives。 The characters per se were not likable, but the writing reeled me in。 It was a fun read, though contrary too, now that I thought about it。

Great premise, well written。 But the overall wishy-washiness of the three main characters drove me absolutely nuts。 They were so self-involved in their own lives and never looked to see what they were doing to those around them and they ended up wasting years。 I wanted to kick all of their asses。

Super read! Loved it。It’s a story about life, death, and all the decisions in between。 Choices, families, friendships, and hope。 Four friends, Ant, Kerry, Joel, and Tim are the characters in this growing up book。 Love triangles and broken hearts。 This book hit the summer spot for me! I gave this a fair shot--well over 100 pages。 You know how when you read a book with multiple POVs, there's (usually) one POV that just grates you? For me, that was all three--I didn't care for any of the characters and am definitely not vested enough to find out out their stories play out。 I had high hopes--the premise was intriguing (and important--knowing what to do and having the wherewithal to ACT in an emergency situation are two very critical things)。。。but this was a big fat NOPE for me。 I gave this a fair shot--well over 100 pages。 You know how when you read a book with multiple POVs, there's (usually) one POV that just grates you?

I really wish this book had been cut down a solid 100-150 pages。 I believe it would've made a positive impact on the story instead of feeling very repetitive in drawn out in places。 While the plot of the story is solid, taking place over 18 years between 3 characters after 2 of them saved the life of the 3rd, the spread of the timeline feels a bit uneven。 In the beginning, mere months pass between the chapters but, as time goes on, the jumps are much wider and less comprehensive of what occurred I really wish this book had been cut down a solid 100-150 pages。 I believe it would've made a positive impact on the story instead of feeling very repetitive in drawn out in places。 While the plot of the story is solid, taking place over 18 years between 3 characters after 2 of them saved the life of the 3rd, the spread of the timeline feels a bit uneven。 In the beginning, mere months pass between the chapters but, as time goes on, the jumps are much wider and less comprehensive of what occurred during these timeframes。 I get the feeling that someone realized the book needed to be edited down but did so somewhat haphazardly instead of putting the time into shaving down the parts that needed it and cutting down on the repetition。 I will say that I remained pretty interested in how the story would all turn out for all three and in general, I was pleased with the outcome, although the ending angered me a bit simply because it was more of the same back and forth with the characters that there was already too much of previously。 If you are a fan of a truly character driven story, you will probably enjoy this book for the most part。 Everything was very easy to visualize and I really did enjoy the journey of the main character for the majority of the story。 。。。more

Another excellent read from one of my favourite authors。 But this particular story isn’t simply fiction, it’s a vitally important account based on real life experiences of how knowing what do to, and how to do administer CPR can save a life。 The story of Kerry, Joel, Tim, their friends and families are intertwined from chapter one。 The book captivated me from that point because I have been in a situation where I had to assist my elderly stepfather with CPR。 This story is well written, highly res Another excellent read from one of my favourite authors。 But this particular story isn’t simply fiction, it’s a vitally important account based on real life experiences of how knowing what do to, and how to do administer CPR can save a life。 The story of Kerry, Joel, Tim, their friends and families are intertwined from chapter one。 The book captivated me from that point because I have been in a situation where I had to assist my elderly stepfather with CPR。 This story is well written, highly researched, captivating, enthralling and emotional。 I highly recommend it。 Knowing that this was based on a personal account of real event, makes this book even more awesome and must have been incredibly emotionally difficult to write。 。。。more

What an absolutely amazing book。 This book made me truly feel for the characters and was such a beautiful story。If you know me, you know I am a nurse。 And not only am I a nurse, but I was an ER nurse for many, many years。 I also had an out of hospital save almost 2 years ago。 She survived, but it was an emotional experience and difficult to be able to bring her back to life。 This book brought all of that back to me。You never know how much your actions, or lack of actions, can affect someone else What an absolutely amazing book。 This book made me truly feel for the characters and was such a beautiful story。If you know me, you know I am a nurse。 And not only am I a nurse, but I was an ER nurse for many, many years。 I also had an out of hospital save almost 2 years ago。 She survived, but it was an emotional experience and difficult to be able to bring her back to life。 This book brought all of that back to me。You never know how much your actions, or lack of actions, can affect someone else’s life。 This really made me feel for all of the characters, from how performing CPR to not performing CPR changed the course of their lives, and how our actions have lasting effects on a persons life。I know that if you read this story, you will fall in love with the characters and not want to put this book down until you read the very last word。 So pick it up, but clear your calendar until you finish it! 。。。more

What a book it had everything we had heartbreak, romance and the ups and downs of the characters in this book。The opening chapter of the book kept you guessing was Joel going to live。 We go through the years of the 3 people involved in the night everything changed for Joel, Kerry & Tim。It kept me guessing would this book have a happy ending in the first place。 I certainly could not put this book down wondering what their lives would be like over the years。Enjoyed every moment of reading this boo What a book it had everything we had heartbreak, romance and the ups and downs of the characters in this book。The opening chapter of the book kept you guessing was Joel going to live。 We go through the years of the 3 people involved in the night everything changed for Joel, Kerry & Tim。It kept me guessing would this book have a happy ending in the first place。 I certainly could not put this book down wondering what their lives would be like over the years。Enjoyed every moment of reading this book。 。。。more

Basically a romance novel, so I saw the ending coming a mile away, but the writing was strong and the characters kept my interest, and I liked what a long period of time the book covered。
