Summary

It is 997 CE, the end of the Dark Ages。 England is facing attacks from the Welsh in the west and the Vikings in the east。 Those in power bend justice according to their will, regardless of ordinary people and often in conflict with the king。 Without a clear rule of law, chaos reigns。

In these turbulent times, three characters find their lives intertwined。 A young boatbuilder's life is turned upside down when the only home he's ever known is raided by Vikings, forcing him and his family to move and start their lives anew in a small hamlet where he does not fit in。 。 。 。 A Norman noblewoman marries for love, following her husband across the sea to a new land, but the customs of her husband's homeland are shockingly different, and as she begins to realize that everyone around her is engaged in a constant, brutal battle for power, it becomes clear that a single misstep could be catastrophic。 。 。 。 A monk dreams of transforming his humble abbey into a center of learning that will be admired throughout Europe。 And each in turn comes into dangerous conflict with a clever and ruthless bishop who will do anything to increase his wealth and power。

As the others in the series, this prequel is engaging and has some fun sticking-it-to-power / smarts-over-bully moments。

Good storyI read Pillars of the Earth a long time ago。 When deciding what to read I chose this pre-quell。 I am glad I did。 The characters are well developed and the plot is not quite as predictable as it might seem。 Now I have to re-read Pillars before moving on to books 3 and 4。

3。5 Just not my favorite Ken Follett book。 For the first time, I actually put down a book and read another, then went back。 As always, this is a historical epic。 For me, there was more historical value than character or story value。The first encounter with Viking raiders was a descriptive, brutal, Ken Follet battle。 The details of every structure being designed and built were poetic。 The cruelty and injustice of the class system were heartbreaking and emotional。 However, the storyline itself jus 3。5 Just not my favorite Ken Follett book。 For the first time, I actually put down a book and read another, then went back。 As always, this is a historical epic。 For me, there was more historical value than character or story value。The first encounter with Viking raiders was a descriptive, brutal, Ken Follet battle。 The details of every structure being designed and built were poetic。 The cruelty and injustice of the class system were heartbreaking and emotional。 However, the storyline itself just fell a little short for me。 。。。more

It kept me interested and the writing is pretty good。 A bit of a downer in tone at times, of course。 A good 3。

There's something about a Ken Follett that makes for a gripping read ad he sure did it again。 Only problem is, now I want to re-read the others in the series! I haven't read a Ken Follett book since Pillars of the Earth many years ago so I wasn't sure what to expect from this one。 I love the time period (8th/9th Century England) and he tells a story of a small village with a level of detail and authenticity that you begin to feel like you know just what day to day life was like back then。The three main characters all have their own unique perspectives and narratives that connect and drive the story forward。 The book does not shy away from the brutal n I haven't read a Ken Follett book since Pillars of the Earth many years ago so I wasn't sure what to expect from this one。 I love the time period (8th/9th Century England) and he tells a story of a small village with a level of detail and authenticity that you begin to feel like you know just what day to day life was like back then。The three main characters all have their own unique perspectives and narratives that connect and drive the story forward。 The book does not shy away from the brutal nature of life in that time, with many families simply struggling to survive each season。 It also tells a believable story about corruption, power, and the cowardice of people who have managed to obtain some level of control in an area。I personally found the best character to be the Lady Ragna, who offers a phenomenal glimpse into the strength and determination necessary for women of the age to even survive, let alone thrive。 The story of Edgar was also really enjoyable and gives a glimpse into the cost of a person trying to live life according to his values without making the easy choice。 Brother Aldred the monk was a well written character that gives great insight into the workings of the Church during that time。 Despite the length of this book I could not put it down after the first 50 pages or so。 It only covers a brief period of time in the area (~10 years) so you really feel like you are there as events unfold。 Some reviewers thought that Follett wasn't detailed enough in some places but honestly I found his approach to writing this story to be perfect - he maintained tremendously crisp pace while still giving excellent detail and color。 He was especially great at making you understand the network of character relationships and intrigue which drives the story forward。It is one of the best books I have read in the last few years。 I highly recommend you pick it up and give it a try。 。。。more

Brilliantly constructed and plotted。 However, it’s basically the plot and characters of Pillars of the Earth reassembled。 The last quarter is predictable and the ending is overly mawkish。 But I kept turning the pages。 It’s astonishing that he can write so many books of this length and, relative, quality。 A lot to admire but a shame his five - five!- editors were not more assertive。

Ken Follett never disappoints。 This is the prequel to PILLARS OF THE EARTH, which I loved (and now want to re-read) but somehow, THE EVENING。。。 seems a little flatter, although it is an engaging and entertaining read。 One minor criticism I have is that only the good characters seem fleshed out and realistically portrayed as flawed, complex, sometimes irrational and overly emotional, human beings。 Whereas the villains are a bit one-diimensional。 I like to feel at least a tad of sympathy for a vil Ken Follett never disappoints。 This is the prequel to PILLARS OF THE EARTH, which I loved (and now want to re-read) but somehow, THE EVENING。。。 seems a little flatter, although it is an engaging and entertaining read。 One minor criticism I have is that only the good characters seem fleshed out and realistically portrayed as flawed, complex, sometimes irrational and overly emotional, human beings。 Whereas the villains are a bit one-diimensional。 I like to feel at least a tad of sympathy for a villain, because villainy is the result of being too human, really, and also because it makes them more realistic and interesting。 Other than that, I really enjoyed this book, and it was hard to put down。 If you liked PILLARS。。 and WORLD WITHOUT END, you will like this, too。 I still have not read A COLUMN OF FIRE, but hope to soon。 。。。more

The Evening and the Morning is the fourth in the series and a prequel to Pillars of the Earth。 Pillars is far and away the best of the series and one of my top ten favorites。 I liked Pillars so much that I have read it twice。 About ten years elapsed between my first and second reading。 For me, The Evening and the Morning was the least enjoyable of the four novels。 Follett includes a mix of sex, violence, skullduggery, murder, and mayhem, with a smattering of love, devotion, and virtue。 Therein l The Evening and the Morning is the fourth in the series and a prequel to Pillars of the Earth。 Pillars is far and away the best of the series and one of my top ten favorites。 I liked Pillars so much that I have read it twice。 About ten years elapsed between my first and second reading。 For me, The Evening and the Morning was the least enjoyable of the four novels。 Follett includes a mix of sex, violence, skullduggery, murder, and mayhem, with a smattering of love, devotion, and virtue。 Therein lies my problem with the book。 For my taste, Follett focused too much of the story on evil prevailing over good。 Much of the plot was very predictable and the ending seemed rushed and shallow。 Lastly, the only thing tying The Evening and the Morning story to The Pillars of the Earth story is that they both take place in the same local。 。。。more

This is the prequel to Pillars of the Earth。 I actually haven’t read that one in years, so I sort of want to go back and see all the ways the two books connect。 I’m giving this book four stars because it really is engaging。 It’s 900 pages, but the plot and characters really draw you end。 The book ends up feeling like a quick read。 But Follett is not a literary style author。 Don’t expect a beautifully written book。 But do expect it to be super interesting!

I forgot how much I enjoyed Pillars of the Earth, this one was awesome as well。 Loved and hated the characters, and rooted for the good guys - they certainly had their tribulations! Going to read the entire series now。

If the Kingsbridge books were albums by prog-rock legends Yes, the Evening and the Morning is "Tales from the Topographic Ocean。" This isn't because 'Evening and the Morning" is overly conceptual, it's just because it is the moment when the lack of restraint became the biggest barrier to achieving something that would appeal to anyone who was not already a fan。 The lack of restraint hides a complete lack of new ideas。 As Yes gave us another overly ambitious album of stadium oriented nerd music " If the Kingsbridge books were albums by prog-rock legends Yes, the Evening and the Morning is "Tales from the Topographic Ocean。" This isn't because 'Evening and the Morning" is overly conceptual, it's just because it is the moment when the lack of restraint became the biggest barrier to achieving something that would appeal to anyone who was not already a fan。 The lack of restraint hides a complete lack of new ideas。 As Yes gave us another overly ambitious album of stadium oriented nerd music "Tales", Follett gives us another overly ambitious historical epic of good vs evil with "evening"。 This is not to say that I was not enthralled by Follett's skill at pacing a story that made 900 pages fly by, it's just to say that by the time the major characters were introduced, I knew their fates。 The good characters would suffer losses, the evil characters would triumph and eventually I'd get an ending that was satisfying。 And as a listener can't be fail to go "wow" at a Steve Howe guitar solo or Rick Wakeman's keyboard wizardry, I enjoy Follett's skill at making his good characters so good and pure, while his evil characters are evil。 And I have to hand it to Follett, he's now managed to get me to read four 900 pages books where the central drama is around building things like churches and bridges。 Ironically, as his characters struggle in the clearly defined way that good and evil characters tend to do, it is when Follett attempts to put in some moral ambiguity that the book falls flat。 It felt like Follett was trying to make clear to the reader that he KNOWS that certain elements of the book are morally terrible but that he needs to include them because "it's historical fiction" and this is what the people did。 Just because you've always had long instrumental sections with guitar wizardry, doesn't mean you need to have it on every album - there are other ways to include your ideas。 I'd give it 3。5 stars if half-stars were a thing。 。。。more

I love Ken Follett’s historical fiction。 I’m a history fanatic, but not a historian, and as far as I can tell his work is well researched and generally spot on。 Obviously, he takes liberties for the sake of the story, but, from what I know about history in general lots of liberties are taken in even academic history。My one criticism of the now seven of his historical fiction books is that after a couple of them you start to see the pattern of characters。 I’m pretty sure one could come up with ar I love Ken Follett’s historical fiction。 I’m a history fanatic, but not a historian, and as far as I can tell his work is well researched and generally spot on。 Obviously, he takes liberties for the sake of the story, but, from what I know about history in general lots of liberties are taken in even academic history。My one criticism of the now seven of his historical fiction books is that after a couple of them you start to see the pattern of characters。 I’m pretty sure one could come up with around ten character types much more specific than the classic “protagonist”, “antagonist” and identify them in each of these novels。 Alas, having said this, I still find myself reading far too late in bed because I want to know how the story turns out。 。。。more

It was good so far as easy, entertaining fiction goes。 I read it quickly because I wanted to see what happened。 However, it didn't really have much to do with Saxons。 I thought it was going to be more historical, but it's really a book about interpersonal drama that could've been set in any era without a significant change to the plot。 And the characters felt very repetitive from Follett's other Kingsbridge books。 If possible, it's even smuttier than his previous books。 It really should be calle It was good so far as easy, entertaining fiction goes。 I read it quickly because I wanted to see what happened。 However, it didn't really have much to do with Saxons。 I thought it was going to be more historical, but it's really a book about interpersonal drama that could've been set in any era without a significant change to the plot。 And the characters felt very repetitive from Follett's other Kingsbridge books。 If possible, it's even smuttier than his previous books。 It really should be called "Rapey Saxons"。I preferred Wulf the Saxon by G。A。 Henty。 。。。more
