In terms of the quality of writing, I'd say it's 3/5 stars。 In terms of how much I liked it though, it's a solid 4/5, maybe even 4。5/5。 It's a book where it's value exceeds the sum of its parts。 In terms of the quality of writing, I'd say it's 3/5 stars。 In terms of how much I liked it though, it's a solid 4/5, maybe even 4。5/5。 It's a book where it's value exceeds the sum of its parts。 。。。more

Shiloh is one of the best books that I had to read with the class in school—and that's saying a lot because most of the books my teachers picked sucked。 They were either full of dry, passionless fluff or they were bullshit literary fiction。 But I repeat myself。 Shiloh was the first book I remember reading that had characters I actually cared about and a story that was easily understandable and relatable。 I also remember that it contributed greatly to my love for animals, especially dogs, which I Shiloh is one of the best books that I had to read with the class in school—and that's saying a lot because most of the books my teachers picked sucked。 They were either full of dry, passionless fluff or they were bullshit literary fiction。 But I repeat myself。 Shiloh was the first book I remember reading that had characters I actually cared about and a story that was easily understandable and relatable。 I also remember that it contributed greatly to my love for animals, especially dogs, which I am still fond of to this day。I haven't read this book since the fourth grade, but rereading it now, I was pleasantly surprised by the personal narrative voice, the memorable characterization, and the effective portrayal of a moral dilemma that any child could see themselves in。 I like how the main character, Marty, had to violate his principles more and more as he went on in order to protect Shiloh, which ironically led to him mirroring the behavior of the main antagonist, Judd Travers。 Yet it was by returning to those principles that he ultimately got what he wanted。 I also found it interesting that Judd Travers was not portrayed as a black-and-white villain。 Instead, he talked about his own harsh childhood, hinting at a deeper, more complex reason as to why he treats animals so terribly。 It wasn't enough to make him wholly sympathetic as I still think he needs serious therapy, but it was a lot more than I would have expected from a children's novel。Overall, Shiloh was a good read for me both as a child and as an adult。 I'd say if you're a parent or teacher looking for a book that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, then this is an excellent choice。 。。。more

4。5 starsI really loved this book。 I never read it as a kid, but I wish I had。 The protagonist, Marty, is admirable, big-hearted, and hard-working, and his immediate bond with Shiloh is beautiful。 The way Marty genuinely loves Shiloh and would do anything to rescue him is so heart-warming。 The descriptions of Shiloh's abuse can be quite rough, but it all works out in the end。 And Marty's parents, while they don't always make the right decisions immediately, are caring, loving, and well-intention 4。5 starsI really loved this book。 I never read it as a kid, but I wish I had。 The protagonist, Marty, is admirable, big-hearted, and hard-working, and his immediate bond with Shiloh is beautiful。 The way Marty genuinely loves Shiloh and would do anything to rescue him is so heart-warming。 The descriptions of Shiloh's abuse can be quite rough, but it all works out in the end。 And Marty's parents, while they don't always make the right decisions immediately, are caring, loving, and well-intentioned, which is really nice to see in a kid's books。One of the best children's books I've ever read。 。。。more

I'm not sure how I feel about this book as the boy comes from a Christian home but sure does a lot of lying, and there's no real consequences for his actions。 There are ina few ways, yet, at the same time。。。 yes, the boy did talk about how bad he felt about lying and what was going on, yet he continued to listen to his fleshly desires rather than be honest。 I did like how he held up to his end of the bargain he made, that he did have going for him。 The book most certainly did provide ample conve I'm not sure how I feel about this book as the boy comes from a Christian home but sure does a lot of lying, and there's no real consequences for his actions。 There are ina few ways, yet, at the same time。。。 yes, the boy did talk about how bad he felt about lying and what was going on, yet he continued to listen to his fleshly desires rather than be honest。 I did like how he held up to his end of the bargain he made, that he did have going for him。 The book most certainly did provide ample conversation around our lunch table! 。。。more

I remember reading Shiloh when I was in early elementary school。 Rereading it from a new perspective as an adult, it’s still a good book about a boy and his dog。 I don’t know if I can say easy to read though。 Being from the country, it was easy for me to see and picture the places and scenarios within the book, but thinking about some of the descriptions and pieces of the book, I wonder how easy it is to understand this book is outside of that experience。

My children loved this book。 I am glad that I read it aloud to them。 I was surprised at some of the use of curse words。 I understand the way it was written to create the language of the character, and it was extremely well done, I had such fun reading to them with an accent, but I still think some of the language could be avoided。Just thought I’d put that out there for anyone who is cautious in the same was as me。

So Marty threatened to report Judd。 Judd said he'll give half of the meat for not reporting but Marty said he won't report only if Judd lets him keep Shiloh。 They made a deal, work for 10 hours and Shiloh is Marty's! Marty worked hard and finally! He earned the Dog。 The family was very happy after!THE END!Amazing story about a warm-hearted boy whose love for Shiloh never ends! I would give this book 5-stars because I love how someone could have so much courage talking back to another grownup like that! Another reason why I love this book is that it shows how Shiloh and Marty's bond slowly beginning to tighten up。 The last reason why I love this book is that I adore the part where Marty caught Judd and they make a deal! 。。。more

We did another family audiobook with a dog as a major character, and this one was really fun。 Marty falls in love with a dog。 The only problem—the dog belongs to someone else。 Marty struggles with questions of right and wrong, like which is worse—sending a dog back to an abusive master or keeping him without permission? The narrator on this one was perfect for the role, and I liked the dynamics of Marty’s family and the way he had to deal with consequences for his choices。 4。5 stars

Strong 5 out of 10 Shiloh is a book about a boy who figures out that his neighbor is abusing his dogs。 This obviously horrifies him。 Then one day he witnesses one of the dogs escaping, so he builds a pen for it, and names it Shiloh。 The boy sneaks it table scraps every once in a while and attempts to hide the dog from his family。 Then one day something terrible happens to Shiloh, and the boy is forced to reveal to his family about the dog。 This book was alright。 I wasn't too impressed by it。 I Strong 5 out of 10 Shiloh is a book about a boy who figures out that his neighbor is abusing his dogs。 This obviously horrifies him。 Then one day he witnesses one of the dogs escaping, so he builds a pen for it, and names it Shiloh。 The boy sneaks it table scraps every once in a while and attempts to hide the dog from his family。 Then one day something terrible happens to Shiloh, and the boy is forced to reveal to his family about the dog。 This book was alright。 I wasn't too impressed by it。 It was pretty inspirational, but there are some flaws, such as the character writing。 Also, this book does talk about topics such as animal abuse。 These things need to be talked about more often, but in the end, you are made to sympathize with the abuser somewhat。 Overall, I enjoyed this book, but there's a lot of things I didn't enjoy about this book as well。 It's an okay book in my opinion, but definitely not my cup of tea。 。。。more

A sweet story about a young boy who wants a dog and gains the courage to confront cruelty in a very graceful and effective way。 Excellent moral lessons beautifully written。

I disagree with the watered down version of Christianity the author shows in this book。 The main character Marty would rather go to hell than return a dog who has been mistreated to his owner。 Marty goes through lie after lie trying to hide the dog from his family and friends and considers blackmail near the end of the book。 The main character also blasphemes near the end。 I would not give this book to my children to read on their own, but I would possibly read it aloud to them and stop as neede I disagree with the watered down version of Christianity the author shows in this book。 The main character Marty would rather go to hell than return a dog who has been mistreated to his owner。 Marty goes through lie after lie trying to hide the dog from his family and friends and considers blackmail near the end of the book。 The main character also blasphemes near the end。 I would not give this book to my children to read on their own, but I would possibly read it aloud to them and stop as needed to discuss the character's situation, poor decisions and lack of character。While I agree that animals should be treated well and taken care of, I would not go so far as the author in saying hunting or eating animals is wrong。By the end, the character starts to tell the truth, but never really learns that lying is wrong。 He just thinks the ends justifies the means。 His family, friends, and other townspeople become complicit in the lies and deception。 It uses emotional reasoning to get what you want, rather than rational discussion。 。。。more

I read this with my granddaughter for her school assignment。 She's the same age as the main character, Marty, and just as much of a dog lover。 Naylor offers lots of lessons for middle grade kids, wrapped into an engaging story about saving a dog from abuse。 The Preston family and their rural West Virginia community have different lives from our city-based one。 And these lessons enlightened my granddaughter to a way of life where hunting is for food, not sport。 And where the community sticks toge I read this with my granddaughter for her school assignment。 She's the same age as the main character, Marty, and just as much of a dog lover。 Naylor offers lots of lessons for middle grade kids, wrapped into an engaging story about saving a dog from abuse。 The Preston family and their rural West Virginia community have different lives from our city-based one。 And these lessons enlightened my granddaughter to a way of life where hunting is for food, not sport。 And where the community sticks together, but is also sometimes a little too invasive and close。 All in all, a strong middle grade book especially for kids who love animals。 。。。more

I thought Shiloh was a good book。 From the standpoint of a book you could read to children and then engage in good discussions on tough choices, it is a very good book。 Some of the choices the 13-year-old boy has to make are tough, and makes us feel it with him。 I didn’t find it as ‘fun’ or as insightful as some other books on dogs I have read, but a good story。

Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor tShiloh was written for children in elementary school ages nine through twelve, but as a seventeen year old in high school I thoroughly enjoyed the book。 This book had two major themes/lessons that were taught throughout the whole book: those being dishonesty and responsibility。 Marty Preston, an eleven year old boy, finds Shiloh, a brown beagle by a river near his house。 He has always wanted a pet so he takes Shiloh in。While they learn many lessons they have to Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor tShiloh was written for children in elementary school ages nine through twelve, but as a seventeen year old in high school I thoroughly enjoyed the book。 This book had two major themes/lessons that were taught throughout the whole book: those being dishonesty and responsibility。 Marty Preston, an eleven year old boy, finds Shiloh, a brown beagle by a river near his house。 He has always wanted a pet so he takes Shiloh in。While they learn many lessons they have to go through things to learn them。 Shiloh was abused by an old man that lives close to the Preston family。 Shiloh and Marty hide from this crazy old man in fear that he will find Shiloh and kill him。 Marty and his family take Shiloh to the vet in hopes for a full recovery after being abused continuously。 After many examinations the doctor healed him completely and Shiloh was ready to go on many adventures with Marty。 They were like two peas in a pod, the best of friends。 One never left the other, Marty was willing to fight for him。 This book gave me hope in humanity and showed me that it only takes one good person who wants change to make change。 It also proved the point that a dog is a man's best friend, this quote is an example of this。 “If Jesus ever comes back to earth again, I'm thinking, he'll come as a dog, because there isn't anything as humble or patient or loving or loyal as the dog I have in my arms right now”。 Overall this was a very well written book that I feel as if many would enjoy reading no matter what age。 I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves a good read。 。。。more

I read this book at some point in elementary school 3rd or 4th grade maybe。 I remember not being able to put this book down but hating it with every fiber of my being at the same time。 I loved the storyline and the love between the boy and his dog but I do not do well with dog stories simply because I can't deal with bad things happening to the animal。 This is a good story and I am glad I read it but I will never touch this book again。 I read this book at some point in elementary school 3rd or 4th grade maybe。 I remember not being able to put this book down but hating it with every fiber of my being at the same time。 I loved the storyline and the love between the boy and his dog but I do not do well with dog stories simply because I can't deal with bad things happening to the animal。 This is a good story and I am glad I read it but I will never touch this book again。 。。。more
