Summary

Rising steeply from the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, the Dutch island of Saba is a sleepy paradise, the mountainous slopes dotted with little red-and-white cottages and the seas teeming with life。 But this little oasis has a less tranquil history, many of its inhabitants having descended from smugglers and pirates。

Boone Fischer and Emily Durand are eager to explore their new home, but their peaceful lives are about to be shattered, as one of history's most powerful hurricanes begins to form—and, as if that weren't enough, a savage evil has made its way ashore。 In this sequel to the Best Seller "Deep Shadow", Nick Sullivan brings the readers to another fascinating corner of the world and sends them into a swirl of action and adventure。

Great adventure on little known islandBoone and Emily are great characters, their relationship sparks interest and engages the reader。 Well designed plot, good characters, realistic and accurate dive descriptions, learning about Dutch island Saba。 What’s not to love?

Boone and Emily are two of my favorite characters Once again, I enjoyed the story and the characters。 The author’s descriptions of the island(s) was detailed enough to evoke vivid mental images。 There was just enough action and intrigue to keep the reader involved。

Great storyReally enjoyed this story。 The Servant was appropriately villainous while Boone and Emily became even closer。 Action, suspense, comedy and diving。 What could be better。

Second book in the series, I love the description of the island and all the characters, there was only one place in the book where I felt it was a little predictable, but it was still a very enjoyable book。

Decent we-survived-the-crazy-serial-killer story, but I picked this up for the underwater content, which was shallow。 Too mass market, too bad。

Good AdventureAn exciting thriller with several unexpected twists and turns。 The romane between Boone and Emily blooms in a very positive way and the story opens the way to further adventures by the couple。

What a great follow up to the first book in the series。 This was an action packed page turner。 The dive descriptions of the sea life are rich and make you feel like you are there。 If you are a Wayne Sinnett fan you will love this series。 This series is bed read in order。

Story enjoyable but。。I am enjoying this series。the pace is fast and the dive knowledge obvious。I do find, however,Emily's British slang seems to be used just for the sake of throwing words in there to show the writer's knowledge of said slang。Otherwise, enjoyable reading。 Story enjoyable but。。I am enjoying this series。the pace is fast and the dive knowledge obvious。I do find, however,Emily's British slang seems to be used just for the sake of throwing words in there to show the writer's knowledge of said slang。Otherwise, enjoyable reading。 。。。more

Love Boone and EmilyNot as much diving in this one's but not a turn off at all。 Love the descriptions of Saba, a place I'd love to see one day。 Even with a hurricane and loved to find that some of the characters actually are real people。 Loved the first two books can't wait to see what happens in the third。 Love Boone and EmilyNot as much diving in this one's but not a turn off at all。 Love the descriptions of Saba, a place I'd love to see one day。 Even with a hurricane and loved to find that some of the characters actually are real people。 Loved the first two books can't wait to see what happens in the third。 。。。more

Nick Sullivan's "Deep" series was meant to be heard, not read。 In the setting of a Caribbean island with an international cast of characters, Sullivan's voice acting brings them all, vividly, to life。 Packed with diving adventures, smugglers, a hurricane, martial arts, humour, romance and danger, this book has something for everyone。 Boone Fischer and Emily Durand are back! First, the good stuff。 Sullivan does as vivid a job of portraying Saba as he did Bonaire in the first book of the series。 I recommend you read the first book in the series before you read this one, or you will be confused about all the references to the events in the first book, and also you will probably find that book spoiled。Why did I not finish it? It became clear when we get to know the bad guy that he is REALLY NASTY and sadistic。 I am not into that。 That is why I stopped reading about 23% First, the good stuff。 Sullivan does as vivid a job of portraying Saba as he did Bonaire in the first book of the series。 I recommend you read the first book in the series before you read this one, or you will be confused about all the references to the events in the first book, and also you will probably find that book spoiled。Why did I not finish it? I liked this one better than Caribbean Dive Adventures # 1。 Was it the hurricane that made it more intense? and somehow more believable? Note: While this is Book 2 in the series, it works fine as a stand alone novel。I really enjoyed Book 1 in this series and Book 2 is just as good, or even a smidge better。 Emily and Boone have a solid friendship that serves as a great base for their developing romance。 That makes them a great team for this adventure! It’s really the mystery and adventure that keeps me interested in these books。 The setting is exotic and lush, a unique place for murder, deceit, and occasional mayhem。 All around, it’s a great combo that had me listening to this story in one long go。 I didn’t want to put it down!Boone does seem to be developing a special ability, a kind of spidey sense when it comes to the bad guys。 At first, this was believable because all of us take in more info than we’re a aware of and that can lead to hunches。 However, later in the story it becomes more a plot crutch to keep things moving along。 Boone is interesting enough on his own that he doesn’t need any quasi-mystical abilities。 That’s a really tiny complaint for a story that kept me so thoroughly entertained。Emily’s sense of humor is a bit like my own and I loved how she used it to keep her own spirits up during the direst moments。 That scene where she’s singing Old MacDonald Had A Farm was great。 Emily is a great character because she’s not some insta-warrior nor is she a maiden in distress。 She’s practical and fights when she has to but isn’t above getting an assist from Boone when the situation warrants it。There’s some new characters introduced (which makes sense since they switched islands from Book 1)。 This includes a woman who wants a sparring partner and Boone can keep up。 At first I was worried that the author was setting up a love triangle, but thankfully that isn’t so。 Yay! It’s really good because I like the addition of this new character and appreciate the useful things she taught Emily。All around, it was a fast-paced bit of action goodness。 Looking forward to the next book! 5/5 stars。The Narration: Nick Sullivan narrates his own book and he does a really good job of it。 Emily still sounds more Australian than English at times but not as much as she did in Book 1。 But I’m fine picturing her as Australian。 Sullivan has unique voices for all the characters and he does a variety of Caribbean accents as the story dictates。 His female voices are believable。 All around, it’s a really good performance。 There are no technical issues with the recording。 4。75/5 stars。I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions。 The tour is being sponsored by Nick Sullivan。 The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it。 。。。more

4。5 STARS。 Audio book review。 In DEEP CUT, as in DEEP SHADOW, readers get to live vicariously through the adventures of main characters Boone Fischer and Emily Durand, this time with the stunning setting of the island of Saba in the Caribbean Ocean。 Ahhhhhh。 With the threats of the last book left behind, the bad guys beaten back, and a relationship that’s gone from flirty to full bloom, Boone and Emily have nothing to do but spend time between the sheets, or scuba diving, or at the beach bars en 4。5 STARS。 Audio book review。 In DEEP CUT, as in DEEP SHADOW, readers get to live vicariously through the adventures of main characters Boone Fischer and Emily Durand, this time with the stunning setting of the island of Saba in the Caribbean Ocean。 Ahhhhhh。 With the threats of the last book left behind, the bad guys beaten back, and a relationship that’s gone from flirty to full bloom, Boone and Emily have nothing to do but spend time between the sheets, or scuba diving, or at the beach bars enjoying adult beverages, right? WRONG。 While all of the above do happen, there’s something sinister lurking, and it will affect the lovers more than they can imagine。DEEP CUT picks up a week or so after their last adventure ended, and Emily and Boone have advanced their relationship a bit。 What started in the DEEP SHADOW as a friendship with mutual admiration and some flirty business morphed quickly, but it’s especially clear that they are in love and committed, and they complement and balance each other。 It feels natural and it works。 While the book isn’t focused on the romance, it is integral to the primary plot, and author Nick Sullivan brings these two characters to life。“You about to get maudlin? Shut your pie hole。”Sullivan makes his characters feel familiar and authentic, and their personalities are clearly defined。 Boone is mostly the practical, predictable guy, who has some extra sensory perception for when things are off。 His internal monologue sheds light on this and shows his sometimes-humorous side。 Emily is more spontaneous, carefree, and charismatic, and her character brings much levity to the story。 She and Boone both have sharp wits and are quick thinking and clever, and it serves each of them well whether the situations they find themselves in are on land or in the water。DEEP CUT rolls along casually most of the time with interesting island tidbits and a laid-back island vibe without a lot of action。 Then, BAM! High drama, and the action kicks-in to high gear with threats from beast and man and even acts of God。BEAST。 Anyone who knows me knows I have a love/hate relationship with sharks。 I’m terrified but fascinated, and so at the first mention of sharks – which of course are mentioned since the divers are IN THE SHARKS’ HOUSE – my heart rate quickened。 The scenes in the water are nerve-racking enough (um, sharks’ house) by definition, but Sullivan brings in his own diving knowledge and (possibly shark-y experience) to vividly describe the scenes。 It is intense! As a side note, Sullivan also does a great job of slipping in the public service announcement of reminding readers that sharks aren’t evil and what generally motivates their behavior。MAN。 Ooooh, here is another place where Sullivan excels, both in his writing and narration。 While the island of Saba does have a history of pirates and smugglers, the danger of the man-made kind is truly evil – the messed-up, off-balance, psychotic kind of evil that is riveting。 Readers get to go inside the mind of The Servant, and that is a scary place to be especially when you listen to Sullivan’s narration of this character。 His calm and controlled delivery is chilling and totally creepy。GOD。 Okay, maybe that’s too dramatic, but the backdrop of Hurricane Irma drawing ever closer to the island really ramped up the tension。 Readers feel it coming and likely know the path of destruction the real Hurricane Irma left in the Caribbean。 The dread of Irma’s arrival is palpable in the writing, and it perfectly parallels the dread of what’s surely coming when The Servant makes his next move。ABOUT THE NARRATION: Nick Sullivan’s narration is on point in this second book of the series。 He’s tamed the voice of Emily so that she sounds female (and not like a man voicing a female), and he’s captured her wry sense of humor and zest for life。 He does a great job voicing all the characters and their unique accents and personalities and as mentioned, he nails the creepy factor in the voice of The Servant。 There are no audio/technology glitches and the pacing and delivery are even, though a bit slow for me, so I listened at 1。25x。I recommend readers – wait for it – dive right in with DEEP CUT。 It stands alone and is a quick and exciting way to kick-off your summer reading and ignite your wanderlust。 Don’t miss it! Meanwhile, I will anxiously await the next installment in the Caribbean Dive Adventures。 After all, I am still waiting for Boone to find those dolphins。Thank you to the author and Audiobookworm Productions for providing me an Audible download code in exchange for my honest opinion – the only kind I give。 This full review and more special features on Hall Ways Blog。 。。。more

Something I truly appreciate is that Sullivan is hopping from one type of threat to another as Boone and Emily hop from island to island。 I enjoyed DEEP SHADOW and this second book in the series only confirms the fact that this author knows how to tell a story (and he knows his subject)。 Great tension, characters and attention to detail。 A fast, fun read。

Professional Audible narrator turned author Nick Sullivan has pulled off completing another new adventure in the “Caribbean Dive Adventure” series called “Deep Cut”。 This book is his third available in audiobook format, and I can say I have had the pleasure of reviewing each of them。 “Deep Cut” picks up shortly after the event of “Deep Shadow” however this one takes place on a different island from the first book。 Each book in the series could be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone novel, but list Professional Audible narrator turned author Nick Sullivan has pulled off completing another new adventure in the “Caribbean Dive Adventure” series called “Deep Cut”。 This book is his third available in audiobook format, and I can say I have had the pleasure of reviewing each of them。 “Deep Cut” picks up shortly after the event of “Deep Shadow” however this one takes place on a different island from the first book。 Each book in the series could be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone novel, but listening to them in order, one gets more out of the whole story。 So, if this book sounds exciting, I recommend you pick up “Deep Shadow” and give it a listen first。 It is difficult for me to put Mr。 Sullivan’s books in a specific genre category as they all have plenty of action, adventure, emotion, mystery, romance and excitement。 The author has placed this series in the “suspense” genre and I’m OK with that。 If you are one who likes to sink their ears into well-researched, suspenseful, adventure-based tales, I recommend you give “Deep Cut” a listen。 If you had previously enjoyed the first book in the series or are a fan of stories involving the sport of SCUBA, I know you will get even more out of this book than those who are not。 This book references a few of the events from the previous one, but as stated earlier, both could be enjoyed as stand-alone stories。 In “Deep Cut” we are dropped off on the island of Saba, which is a small Caribbean island to the east of Puerto Rico。 However, this new location is not all sand, sun, fun and aquamarine colored water。 Not at all。 As with any small community, there are tight friendships, few enemies, and way too many tourists。 If I were a diver, I would think this would be a pristine location to enjoy the sport of diving。 Much of what I liked in the first book continues in this one as well。 Boone, one of the book’s main characters, seems to have a “Spidey sense” when it comes to people, places, and events。 He is able to quickly detect and determine if events around him seem normal or abnormal。 Others around him do not possess this special talent。 In the second book, I would say his special talent is elevated even more, and you see that those who know him respect his gift of intuition。 I additionally enjoyed the ever-present banter between Emily and Boone, through it, I was able to truly understand and enjoy their relationship。 Such poking and joking between them added elements of humor and fun。Unlike the first book where our main characters battle people in the drug trade and win, this story instead involves a form of what could only be called pure evil (a reference to the movie Time Bandits) coming ashore at the same time a major hurricane is scheduled to impact and devastate this small island; cutting it off from the rest of the world。 In their new environment our main characters need to build fresh relationships with the locals, survive the forces of natures, and face one of their most challenging interactions yet。 Sorry, no spoilers here。 One of the things that stands out for me is the immense amount of research necessary to make a book like this feel and sound believable。 Here Mr。 Sullivan pulls no punches and it is clear when you listen to the book’s last chapter (afterward), here the author provides some background details and thank you messages to all those involved in making the book what it is。 It is clear that a vast number of people along with the author were required to fill in the many nuances that most listeners take for granted while listening。 I think this is what I enjoy most about Mr。 Sullivan’s books。 They seem like a well-planned and organized television series or movie。 The scenes are well described, the characters are dimensional, and the interactions between characters are realistic。 The story had a flow to it which changes pace as various times of action, but I always felt like it was the same flowing story。 I do not recall having to suspend belief at any time while listening。 To me, this is a sign of a well-crafted story。I thought the author’s ability to weave in some island background and lore made the location feel more personal and ominous at the same time。 Not only did the island have a much older history of volcanic activity but it also was a key place of pirates and thieving during its history。 The book’s characters also had a purpose and drive which continued throughout the story。 Even this form of evil that has plagued the island was driven and its actions and motivations felt right。 As many who have read my previous reviews know, I often do not feel the author of a book is a good fit to also be the narrator。 Both roles require different skills and I often like when they are performed by separate individuals。 Here, Mr。 Sullivan is a well-respected and established Audible Narration who has come in to his own as an author。 In this case I did not mind that the book was narrated by the author as well。 The audiobook’s narration was what one expects from a professional。 The audio quality was very good, the characters were all voiced well, even though the female voicing was not my favorite it was passable for being read by a male narrator。 I do not recall any audio artifacts such as swallows, page turns, or inconsistent volume while listening。 The various accents from British, American, islander, etc。 were spot on and memorable。 Mr。 Sullivan enhances an already good story with exceptional narration。For parents and younger readers, Mr。 Sullivan has done a decent job of limiting both vulgarity and overt sexual subject matter。 The book does include some profanity which I believe I could count the times used on my ten fingers。 There are some elements containing light romance and innuendos or sexual references mostly when the two main characters were joking with one another。 The one element that might make the book less suitable for younger readers is some of the graphic violence portrayed in the book。 It is not over the top, but some of the actions of this new enemy are brutal and savage。 I recommend this story to be targeted at more mature listeners。 In summary, you do not need to be a fan of diving to like this story。 There is plenty of action, mystery, and suspense。 Diving is an activity of the author as well as the book’s characters, yet in this book it is really used more as backstory components。 The amount of research that went into the book is not always obvious up front, but when you learn about it in the afterwards chapter your eyes will be opened。 There is adventure, humor, love, and loss all woven into one great story。 I recommend you give it a listen, and when you are done, pick up any other of Mr。 Sullivan’s books as you will not be disappointed。 The story’s major plot lines are addressed in this book and yet the author leaves a few things hanging (not cliff hangers) allowing the adventure and story of our characters to continue another day。 。。。more
