Summary

Great book about boys who accomplished great things by being themselves。 Very colourful and great drawings。 Good to read how you can change the world even if it's just a bit。 Great book about boys who accomplished great things by being themselves。 Very colourful and great drawings。 Good to read how you can change the world even if it's just a bit。 。。。more

Engaging and visually beautiful read that gives brief biographies of men from around the world and through history who have stood out for their achievements "without killing dragons"。 Great pre-teen or early teen read for any gender。 Engaging and visually beautiful read that gives brief biographies of men from around the world and through history who have stood out for their achievements "without killing dragons"。 Great pre-teen or early teen read for any gender。 。。。more

very interesting and entertaining

I really liked this book because it was filled with stories about men who succeeded in defying all the odds。 I felt that this inspired me to be a better person

Amazing stories。 Our favourite bedtime book that keeps us company almost every night。 Known and unknown stories that could set an amazing example of kindness, courage, excellence and perseverance to our kids。。

I'd say this is a perfect book to read to children as bedtime stories! Incredibly inclusive and written in a way that's easy for children to understand。 It's very inclusive, mentioning POC, trans men and gay men。 It teaches children that real heroes have existed in all walks of life and they're likely to find someone just like them in the book。 I'd say this is a perfect book to read to children as bedtime stories!

Book in the same vein as the Rebel Girls series of book but with incredible boys who have done incredible things within the world。 There are famous people such as Gandhi and Muhammed Ali but also less known people who have fought adversity to either change the world or made something of themselves through the adversity they suffered as a child。

I absolutely love this book。 It should, without a shadow of a doubt, be in every library, every school and every child’s bookshelf (boys and girls)。 This is written by Ben Books, a 28-year-old from Gloucestershire who now lives in Berlin and illustrated by Quinton Winter。 This non-fiction book is a collection of stories of men, from past to present, who have changed the world for the better。 It’s worth noting that I don’t like the word ‘dare’ in this title。 Many of the people mentioned in the bo I absolutely love this book。 It should, without a shadow of a doubt, be in every library, every school and every child’s bookshelf (boys and girls)。 This is written by Ben Books, a 28-year-old from Gloucestershire who now lives in Berlin and illustrated by Quinton Winter。 This non-fiction book is a collection of stories of men, from past to present, who have changed the world for the better。 It’s worth noting that I don’t like the word ‘dare’ in this title。 Many of the people mentioned in the book haven’t ‘dared’ to be different at all, they have just been themselves – Lionel Messi is a key one here。 The only other thing which might have improved the book is an author biography with a little more detail。 I think it would be interesting to know about Brooks, why he wrote the book and who his role model is etc。So why do I think this book so important? Historically, men, boys, males have had longstanding structures of what it means to be a male。 Being a man brings power, privilege, a domineering and unemotional personality and success (particularly financial)。 Men have often been told to ‘man up’, ‘stay strong’ or ‘act tough’ and remain stoic in the fact of upset, meaning men don’t often seek help when they need it most。 And as a result of this suicide is considerably greater in males than the opposite gender。 I think it’s about time a book was released, particularly aimed at children, to prove that being a man isn’t defined by financial assets, how good you are at your job, what height you are, whether you are good at sport, or even, being the gender ‘male’ to begin with。 Also, looking at story books and picture books, men are often portrayed as being the hero if they save the princess, or slay the dragon, or win the war etc, so it’s incredibly refreshing to read stories of men who are heroes for things that aren’t linked to their physical attributes。This book is highly accessible for KS2+ children。 The language is easy to read and decodable, with each page split into small, manageable paragraphs。 The illustrations are beautiful, with rich colours and far more interesting than just stock photos from the internet。 I like that Brooks has included people from different time periods and that no two men are the same – the range of topics discussed within the book is vast。 From feminism, to stereotypes, to entrepreneurship, to family, the environment, politics, race, art, science, sport; the list is extensive。 I imagine reading one or two of the stories to a class at the end of the day or, if you have children yourself, reading them at bedtime。 As it’s so accessible it’s definitely a book that children could pick up themselves, even just to look at the illustrations。 The book sparks a lot of questions and discussion, I like to think children would want to research some of the men in more depth, to learn more, to enrich their knowledge。I would really like to read ‘Stories for Kids who Dare to be Different’ next。 。。。more

Poorly written。 What a waste of a great idea。 Boys Who Dare to be Different had the ingredients to make an inspiring collection of stories but instead is dull and awkward to read。 Each “story” is so clunkily crammed in to each page that it reads like a bio rather than anything like storytelling。 Very boring to read, even harder to read aloud and unlikely to captivate young readers。

I picked this books (from public library I would not buy it) thinking it will be a nice book for my nine year old boy。 Unfortunately, I did not checked the book before giving to my son。 After a few stories my son asked me “mom what is a transgender?” To which I replied “where did you hear that word?” There is a story of a transgender in this book for young boys and other stories that DO NOT reflect role models for boys。 It seems that the author has aligned with LGBTQ agenda。 Also, the author doe I picked this books (from public library I would not buy it) thinking it will be a nice book for my nine year old boy。 Unfortunately, I did not checked the book before giving to my son。 After a few stories my son asked me “mom what is a transgender?” To which I replied “where did you hear that word?” There is a story of a transgender in this book for young boys and other stories that DO NOT reflect role models for boys。 It seems that the author has aligned with LGBTQ agenda。 Also, the author does not mention the Christian background of some of the biographies。 I would not recommend this book for any young boy。 I was very upset when I had to explain to my nine year old boy what is a transgender。 He does not need to know about it at his age!! 。。。more

A colorful children's book on 77 boys who faced adversity getting started in life but went on to do great deeds and/or become successful in their field。 Nice layout with a vibrant graphic scene of the person on one page, and about 300 words on the opposite page。I felt the synopsis of the person was far too short。 But more words would mean smaller font, or a book design-layout change。 Its designed for kids so it meets its purpose。 But I might have edited the order of the people presented。 First f A colorful children's book on 77 boys who faced adversity getting started in life but went on to do great deeds and/or become successful in their field。 Nice layout with a vibrant graphic scene of the person on one page, and about 300 words on the opposite page。I felt the synopsis of the person was far too short。 But more words would mean smaller font, or a book design-layout change。 Its designed for kids so it meets its purpose。 But I might have edited the order of the people presented。 First four: Patch Adams, Eddie Aikau, Dr。 Naif Al-Mutawa, Mohed Altrad。 Further back in the book are: Nelson Mandela, Stephen Hawking, Lionel Messi, Vincent Van Gogh。 I would have put a more well-known name to start the book。I also found very key facts missing, or ~wrong。 e。g。 Jesse Eisenberg found out that by acting he could gain victory over being shy。 It says he was a supervillain, zombie hunter, street magician, and a rare parrot named Blu。 But none of these movie names are mentioned? Galileo Galilei did NOT invent the telescope。 The telescope was invented near his time of using it。 Its just that Galileo expanded its use to more than sighting ships on the horizon, and worked to make it better。 This is a common misconception, but it is being perpetuated by the simplicity in this book。 The picture of Galileo is of him dropping a book with a cross (bible?) from a leaning building。 Not a proper picture to present。 He did NOT drop a bible。 And historians agree that Galileo did NOT do the dropping。I still think this book can help kids get excited as they hear about how none of these boys/men achieved what they did easily。 There was adversity and work involved。 It is also good to show a great variety of people from different cultures and different achievements。 Its not all just business or scientific success。 Multiple humanitarians are feature here。 This promotes kids wanting to be whatever they reach for。3。5 rounded up。 。。。more

A very enjoyable book to read throughout lockdown。 Although I don’t think some of the names in the book relate to people who ‘saved the world’ or ‘changed the world’ e。g。 Kylian Mbappe, Stormzy and Romelu Lukaku。 Even as a football fan they haven’t really changed the world。 SUSAN STINKS 😷 💩 💩 💩
