This book is timeless。 The dystopia describes by Orwell is not too far-fetched and we see glimpses of it time and again。 It's a must-read for anyone trying to understand human nature and politics。 This book is timeless。 The dystopia describes by Orwell is not too far-fetched and we see glimpses of it time and again。 It's a must-read for anyone trying to understand human nature and politics。 。。。more

It took a while to get into it but when I did it was very good

Was quite a difficult read through its dreariness, especially during lockdown。 I enjoyed the protagonists nostalgic search for fragments of his authentic past that were laced throughout, such as the memory of the song ‘Oranges and lemons, says the bells of St Clements。。’ that appeared hauntingly a number of times。

A major landmark in political literature。。。。

1984 is a book warning us how ruthless people in power can be。 Through the kind of dystopian narration, he also warns people how far existing dangers can get。This book is a manifest not only against the USSR regime (which Orwell, a leftist, openly criticized), but against any authoritarian regime or anyone who wishes to control humans。 Like the author wishes to alarm us。Definitely a must-read for thinking citizens。

amazing, due for another read soon。 makes you think yet the book anticipates what you are thinking while you read it。

Sometimes it got a little boring because it went on the same thing for forever。 But it defiantly was a cool book about the prospective of government!

It started well, with the view to the dystopian world—a fascinating and, of course, horrifying reality and rules governing the total dystopian world that Orwell has constructed。 However, I found the pace of the book very slow, and eventually, I lost it。

with the world shaped by three geographic superstates - Oceania (Britain, British colonies, and the wider Western Hemisphere), Eurasia (continental Europe and all of Asia north of China), and Eastasia (China and wider east Asia)。 In London, the chief city of Airstrip One (Great Britain, now a province of Oceania), we are introduced to Winston Smith, the protagonist, who works for the Ministry of Truth whose job is to make sure all information is consistent with the message of the Party。 Winston's world is one that is physically, morally, and philosophically decaying exemplified by the Party's slogan; WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH。The truly terrifying imagery of the novel does not delay in introducing itself, the inhabitants of this world are under constant surveillance by The Party from hidden cameras and a television set called a telescreen which has microphones and cameras on both ends。 Children are zealously loyal to the party and do not hesitate to betray their parents to the feared 'Thought Police' if they show an inkling of wavering loyalty to Big Brother。 Love is nonexistent, family ties are superficial, hate dominates, creativity and free thought are stamped out。 Even in one's dreams, they are not safe: talking in their sleep is picked up by the telescreens, which cannot be turned off and its microphones record every sound。'The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears。 It was their final and most essential command。'As the novel progresses, we begin to realize that Winston is engaged in 'thoughtcrime'; by purchasing a diary that he writes in his own independent thoughts, he has initiated a rebellion against Big Brother and the Party。 He begins to see the inconsistency of the world that his employment at the Ministry of Truth has revealed to him through his specific job of altering the newspapers of the past to line up with the details of the present in perfect consistency。 Through his meeting with the young and beautiful Julia, he begins to reconnect and to see what truly is important in life; human connection, love of shared humanity, and not Big Brother。 The tragic ending of the novel cannot be avoided, that is exactly what Orwell intended, the Party and Big Brother are omnipotent。 They cannot be overcome。 When Winston is given a book which is supposedly written by Emmanuel Goldstein, the Trotsky-like enemy of Big Brother and Oceania, whose existence is disputed along with that of the latter, this is all revealed to us。 The book which serves as a plot device during the novel's optimistic second act details the creation of the world in which the story takes place and echoes the theories of Marxism and communist theories of production and class struggle。 By using this plot device, Orwell has laid the trap for the reader; the illusion of a better world that will one day be possible, it truly is as Rust Cohle of True Detective said 'Time is a flat circle'。 Winston and Julia have accepted that they may die for their cause but they are not prepared for the nightmare that awaits them。'At the thought, the words burst out of him: "What is in Room 101?" The expression on O'Brien's face did not change。 "You know what is in Room 101, Winston。 Everyone knows what is in Room 101"。'By the novel's end, one cannot help but have a sense of one's spirit crushed; we are as Winston is, we have a vision of the future where a boot is stamping on a human face - forever。 Even those who have never read a single sentence of George Orwell's work are somewhat familiar with the term Orwellian。 It has become omnipresent in conversations where the discussion of government overreach in the daily life of the citizen is raised。 The concept of Thought Police has been raised, rather amusingly, by those who feel they are being 'canceled' for voicing an unpopular opinion that runs contrary to the popular mainstream。 Even the most terrifying images of the novel have been repackaged as part of popular mainstream British culture: Big Brother, a groundbreaking reality TV show complete with the quintessential image of the all-seeing eye as the show's title card was launched in the year 2000, and Room 101 a panel show where celebrities vie to place their pet hates into the titular Orwellian chamber of horrors。The terrifying vision imagined by Orwell may not have fully come to pass; Stalinist Russia has become nothing but a Cold War relic and the People's Republic of China has somewhat become tamer from the earlier nightmarish years of Mao Zedong。 Yet, we can see eerie hints of that reality in our day-to-day lives。 In the United States, a supposed bastion of liberal democracy and free thought has exercised the worst excesses of its powerful military intelligence and state apparatus; the Patriot Act of the Bush Years following the September 11 Attacks and the revelations of government whistleblower, Edward Snowden, along with Wikileaks documents under Obama has shown that no country is immune to surveilling its civilian populace under the guise of 'maintaining national security'。 As he lay dying in his bed from tuberculosis, George Orwell gave a final warning in an interview with the BBC: 'In our world, there will be no emotions except fear, rage, triumph, and self-abasement。 The sex instinct will be eradicated。 We shall abolish the orgasm。 There will be no loyalty except loyalty to the Party。 But always there will be the intoxication of power。 Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who’s helpless。 If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face, forever。 The moral to be drawn from this dangerous nightmare situation is a simple one: don’t let it happen。 It depends on you。' 。。。more

What can I say about this book that hasn't already been said, it's absolutely brilliant! Had to read this in school。 Did think the spying government aspect was cool, the characters and the ending was disappointing though。

I started reading this book because I loved Animal farm by the same author。 But I found this book to be a drag at times。 It becomes difficult to get hooked to the story at times。Finished the book for the sake of it。 The first part was fine。 But some sections of the book are boring。。

Re-read for a Book Club。Scarier when you know what is coming。Scarier reading as an adult vs a teen。Scarier reading it after the last 4 years。But, the book group decided that, as bad as the internet is, with it, it would be hard to arrive at the situation that exists in the book。
