Summary

Even the fastest ship in the galaxy can’t outrun the past。 。 。 。

THEN:

It’s one of the galaxy’s most dangerous secrets: a mysterious transmitter with unknown power and a reward for its discovery that most could only dream of claiming。 But those who fly the Millennium Falconthroughout its infamous history aren’t your average scoundrels。 Not once, but twice, the crew of the Falcon tries to claim the elusive prize—first, Lando Calrissian and the droid L3-37 at the dawn of an ambitious career, and later, a young and hungry Han Solo with the help of his copilot, Chewbacca。 But the device’s creator, the volatile criminal Fyzen Gor, isn’t interested in sharing。 And Gor knows how to hold a grudge。 。 。 。

NOW:

It’s been ten years since the rebel hero Han Solo last encountered Fyzen Gor。 After mounting a successful rebellion against the Empire and starting a family with an Alderaanian princess, Han hasn’t given much thought to the mad inventor。 But when Lando turns up at Han’s doorstep in the middle of the night, it’s Fyzen’s assassins that he’s running from。 And without Han’s help, Lando—and all life on Cloud City—will be annihilated。

With the assistance of a young hotshot pilot, an Ewok slicer prodigy, the woman who might be the love of Lando’s life, and Han’s best and furriest friend, the two most notorious scoundrels in the New Republic are working together once more。 They’ll have to journey across the stars—and into the past—before Gor uses the device’s power to reshape the galaxy。

It was a nice, short read。 Nothing special, but I loved to read more about Lando since his character wasn’t that developed in the movies after all。 Han and Lando make a great duo, really enjoyed their little adventure。Time skips kept everything entertaining, but the ending was rather quick in the end and the villain was a bit underwhelming for the finale。

Boring。 A tie-in novel should only be written if it has something significant to add to the Saga。 Otherwise, just don't bother。 🚮 Boring。 A tie-in novel should only be written if it has something significant to add to the Saga。 Otherwise, just don't bother。 🚮 。。。more

I don’t mind it, the story isn’t bad and it’s definitely my favorite characters。 But I wouldn’t recommend it。 Im probably the only die hard star wars fan who enjoys these things。

I'm a huge Star Wars fan, so I'm going to be interested in reading any of the book。 Han is a favorite character, so more on him is even better。 Still not a fan of the Disney canon as opposed the original Expanded Universe, but that's me。 At any rate: the book jumps between time frames。 Some of it is before Solo, some between that and Star Wars (the first movie will always be that to me), and some a bit after Return of the Jedi, for those keeping score。 A tale of several times, this features a lo I'm a huge Star Wars fan, so I'm going to be interested in reading any of the book。 Han is a favorite character, so more on him is even better。 Still not a fan of the Disney canon as opposed the original Expanded Universe, but that's me。 At any rate: the book jumps between time frames。 Some of it is before Solo, some between that and Star Wars (the first movie will always be that to me), and some a bit after Return of the Jedi, for those keeping score。 A tale of several times, this features a long-term plot to wreak havoc on the galaxy in a truly unique way。 At different times, the bad guy crosses paths with Lando, Han and Chewie, and then all of them。 It also introduces Sana Starros, a character who has been in some of the recent Marvel comics。 There's also some time with young Ben Solo, but the less said of him, the better。 The story flows between the different eras well, and builds an intriguing tale of coming chaos and twists of fate。 It's always great to see Han and Chewie, a bit of Leia, and Lando。 The mystery comes together well and is at times terrifying and tragic。 The reasons I don't rate it higher? Several modern terms float through the book, like t-shirts being mentioned and a few phrases。 That just doesn't feel like Star Wars to me。 There's also a scene with someone having trouble moving on the hull of a ship in space, making it sound like they are essentially fighting wind resistance。。。 which they can't be。 If it was supposed to be G's from thrust, it's conveyed badly。 It's a good story and not bad addition to the canon。 。。。more

DNF audio at 7 hours and 39 minutes。 The multiple narrators complete with the special effects was just too distracting。 I couldn't keep track of when we were in the present timeline or the past。 Finally just gave up。 DNF audio at 7 hours and 39 minutes。 The multiple narrators complete with the special effects was just too distracting。 I couldn't keep track of when we were in the present timeline or the past。 Finally just gave up。 。。。more

One of the better star war book。 It was like reading the old Canon but with a new feel

My first audio book。 Amazed at the narrator’s ability to sound just like Lando and Han。 Listened to the book while driving to and from Bay Area。 Really enjoyed the book!

i only went through all these for hanleia + han solo being a dad, other than the story was really boring and flashbacks were so confusing。also if they thought seeing ben solo as a baby would make me like him, it didnt。 i still hate him <3

There are things I liked - the Han and Lando banter, seeing Han grapple with family life, some new characters like Taka and Kaasha and Peekpa, a small slice of L3 and Lando's life before Solo, etc。 but overall I didn't find the story made much sense and the pacing was awkward。 There are things I liked - the Han and Lando banter, seeing Han grapple with family life, some new characters like Taka and Kaasha and Peekpa, a small slice of L3 and Lando's life before Solo, etc。 but overall I didn't find the story made much sense and the pacing was awkward。 。。。more

I really hate to say this, but I just didn't dig it and didn't make it all the way through。 I may give it another try reading a physical copy, because I was just too thrown off by the audio version。 The different narrators on the time jumps didn't help, and it just seemed jarring at times and took me out of the story。 As much as I like the author, I didn't really care for his narrations。 There were a few bright spots though。 I really liked the depiction and voice of Lando during the "now" sectio I really hate to say this, but I just didn't dig it and didn't make it all the way through。 I may give it another try reading a physical copy, because I was just too thrown off by the audio version。 The different narrators on the time jumps didn't help, and it just seemed jarring at times and took me out of the story。 As much as I like the author, I didn't really care for his narrations。 There were a few bright spots though。 I really liked the depiction and voice of Lando during the "now" sections。 I also thought the story had a good hook, but would have preferred they just stayed in the main timeline。 。。。more

Weirdly adult for a Star Wars book。 Less descriptions of Lando’s bulge in the future please。

I was really looking forward to revisiting this book。 I liked it well enough when I read it the first time。 But in the year since I read it, I heard so many people describe it in such glowing terms that I was really excited to give it another go。 It’s safe to say this one now ranks among my top Star Wars picks。[READ FULL REVIEW: https://arezoudeetoo。com/2020/08/15/b。。。]Here’s something new: a thriller/mystery with elements of a heist!Lando Calrissian is attacked in his own home by a red-eyed dro I was really looking forward to revisiting this book。 I liked it well enough when I read it the first time。 But in the year since I read it, I heard so many people describe it in such glowing terms that I was really excited to give it another go。 It’s safe to say this one now ranks among my top Star Wars picks。[READ FULL REVIEW: https://arezoudeetoo。com/2020/08/15/b。。。]Here’s something new: a thriller/mystery with elements of a heist!Lando Calrissian is attacked in his own home by a red-eyed droid with one mandate: kill。 The shadowy figure accompanying the droid is a being by the name of Fyzen Gor, who holds the owner of the Millennium Falcon responsible for the theft of a device known as the Phalynx some 10 years prior。Problem is Han is the one who owned the Falcon at the time。Han gets a late night visit from Lando, and the two of them take off on an adventure to track down the Phalynx and figure out why exactly droids keep switching their programming and trying to kill them。Meanwhile Han is wrestling with his want to still be out and on adventures when he has the very real responsibility of being around for his family, something he feels very insecure about。Of course, because this is Star Wars and because it’s a quest, they’re accompanied on their adventure by a ragtag crew including Chewbacca, a former Twi’lek freedom fighter named Kaasha, an Ewok, an Ugnaught, and a hotshot young pilot 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 NThis would've been fine as a book about 2 random pilots on an adventure to stop someone from creating an evil droid army。 By making it a book about Han and Lando and other Star Wars characters they failed both the story as is and those characters。 Neither one sounds/acts like themself。 Almost everything they do/say is out of character。 There's a scene in Episode One where Anakin is in a podrace and we're introduced to a two-headed alien sports announcer that sucks all the Star Wars out of the s NThis would've been fine as a book about 2 random pilots on an adventure to stop someone from creating an evil droid army。 By making it a book about Han and Lando and other Star Wars characters they failed both the story as is and those characters。 Neither one sounds/acts like themself。 Almost everything they do/say is out of character。 There's a scene in Episode One where Anakin is in a podrace and we're introduced to a two-headed alien sports announcer that sucks all the Star Wars out of the scene and makes it feel like a bad kids movie。 That's this whole book。 Too many "The Star Wars universe is just like ours" type references (and possibly a Hitchhiker's Guide reference?) that don't even appear purposeful so much as the result of bad writing and lazy commitment to the tone of the series。 It's a quick read and I liked the characters of Taka and Kaasha。 L3 from the Han Solo movie is the only established character that remains true。 Those 3 things are what keeps this from getting 1 star。 。。。more

DNF @ 150The writing is good it just turns out I don't care about Han's past that much。 When Ben called Lando "Unca Wanwo" it did make me weepy tho so there's that。 Definitely gonna read more of Daniel José Older's work though。 DNF @ 150The writing is good it just turns out I don't care about Han's past that much。 When Ben called Lando "Unca Wanwo" it did make me weepy tho so there's that。 Definitely gonna read more of Daniel José Older's work though。 。。。more

This was fun。 It felt a bit overdone when Han or Lando would say things pulled straight out of the movies (like Lando saying "all right all right all right")。 I understand this was meant to read as nostalgic, but it pulled me out of the story。 There's a way to capture their voices without mimicking the films directly。 This was fun。 It felt a bit overdone when Han or Lando would say things pulled straight out of the movies (like Lando saying "all right all right all right")。 I understand this was meant to read as nostalgic, but it pulled me out of the story。 There's a way to capture their voices without mimicking the films directly。 。。。more

Meh。 Not my favorite at all。 I didn’t like all the time jumps—they were immensely confusing—and I’m sorry, but trying to give a single character the “them/they/theirs” pronouns only leads to sloppy grammar that forces you to go back and read a sentence twice because—surprise!—proper grammar doesn’t allow for that kind of stuff。 Ugh。 And then the story was just kinda。。。boring。 That said the Solo family—Han, Leia, and the uber-adorable Baby Ben—was this book’s saving grace。。。and I will keep this b Meh。 Not my favorite at all。 I didn’t like all the time jumps—they were immensely confusing—and I’m sorry, but trying to give a single character the “them/they/theirs” pronouns only leads to sloppy grammar that forces you to go back and read a sentence twice because—surprise!—proper grammar doesn’t allow for that kind of stuff。 Ugh。 And then the story was just kinda。。。boring。 That said the Solo family—Han, Leia, and the uber-adorable Baby Ben—was this book’s saving grace。。。and I will keep this book in my personal library if only because I treasure them。 。。。more

This book fails in so many ways。 The plot is ridiculous。 It is a poor catalyst for exploring the relationship between Han and Lando。 This is not the Han, nor is it the Lando of the original story。 This is the juvenile, rude, slap-happy, lucky loser version of those characters proffered by Disney。 Here are some great quotes from the book。 “Wait” “Run” “Look out!” “Where did they get blasters?!” There you have it in a nutshell。 Another failed Disney Star Wars novel。 So I am left to wonder, is Disn This book fails in so many ways。 The plot is ridiculous。 It is a poor catalyst for exploring the relationship between Han and Lando。 This is not the Han, nor is it the Lando of the original story。 This is the juvenile, rude, slap-happy, lucky loser version of those characters proffered by Disney。 Here are some great quotes from the book。 “Wait” “Run” “Look out!” “Where did they get blasters?!” There you have it in a nutshell。 Another failed Disney Star Wars novel。 So I am left to wonder, is Disney using its ownership of Lucas properties for political influence by trying to crush notions of independence and entrepreneurialism? I basically liked this story, though it was far from flawless。I love the characters of Han and Lando, and the supporting characters were also good。 The plot was fun, but at times I felt undeveloped。 It won’t be my new favorite book, but I’m glad I read it。

This was a fun story, and I enjoyed the suspense as we went back and forth in time to see all the pieces building to the ultimate conflict。 Unfortunately, there were definitely times when we whipped back and forth a little too fast, and it was disorienting。 The action was fun, the plot was convoluted and engaging, and the characters were pretty faithful to their natures。

I had plans to finally watch Solo before reading this, but it just hasn’t happened yet。 That said, that isn’t needed to appreciate this book as it’s a very stand-alone story。 I didn’t really know what to expect, but figured this would be a bit of a swashbuckler like I’ve heard the (now Legends) Han Solo Trilogy was, but that’s not a word I’d use to describe this。 Rather, this is a tale seeped in romance and nearly feels like a Hallmark film as it gets towards the finale。 That’s probably a bit of I had plans to finally watch Solo before reading this, but it just hasn’t happened yet。 That said, that isn’t needed to appreciate this book as it’s a very stand-alone story。 I didn’t really know what to expect, but figured this would be a bit of a swashbuckler like I’ve heard the (now Legends) Han Solo Trilogy was, but that’s not a word I’d use to describe this。 Rather, this is a tale seeped in romance and nearly feels like a Hallmark film as it gets towards the finale。 That’s probably a bit of a stretch, but this was a lot more cliched than I ever would’ve expected。 We’re following Han and Lando as they head out on an adventure to find a transmitter that’s needed to essentially prevent a massacre on Cloud City。 The story is a lot more convoluted than that, though, as we spend a ton of time in flashbacks for both Lando and Han, plus an storyline with Fyzen Gor。 Frankly, I found it a bit difficult to keep it all straight, outside of the Lando and Han bits。 Han is struggling to come to terms with both marriage and being a father (to two-year-old Ben Solo), but he misses them a ton while out on his mission, and that’s a major element of the story。 On top of that, there is a romance budding between the natural-born-player Lando and Kaasha, another member of their adventure and one with a history with Lando。 This relationship also takes the main stage as the book progresses, and that’s where a lot of the cliched and predictability comes from, unfortunately。 It’s not that I didn’t like them - Lando is one of my favorite characters in this world - it’s just that it does exactly what your normally see in romance stories, which wasn’t what I was looking for here。 This isn’t a bad story at all。 In fact, I laughed out loud quite a lot as the characters are pretty great。 We meet Taka, a pilot, and he’s hilarious。 Very reminiscent of a young Solo。 So while the characters are great, the story just lacks a punch, and given that I know where things go from here, it did feel a little inconsequential。 That’s something I’ll likely deal with a lot as I work my way through these books since I know (for the most part) where things end up。 That’ll change once I hit the newest trilogy, though, as I am still behind on the films。 This was a lot funnier than I expected, but also a bit disappointing at the same time。 I found it a bit difficult to keep track of everything and wished it would’ve lived less in flashbacks and more in the present, but it’s always fun to spend time with Han and Lando, and that alone made the book worth my time。 3。5 stars 。。。more
