Summary

Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city, a grisly metropolis where the violence has begun to create real and deadly monsters。 All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets monsters roam free and makes the inhabitants pay for his protection。 August just wants to be human, as good-hearted as his own father - but his curse is to be what the humans fear。 the thin truce that keeps the Harker and Flynn families at peace is crumbling, and an assassination attempt forces Kate and August into a tenuous alliance。 But how long will they survive in a city where no one is safe and monsters are real …

4。5/5 Stars!!!Alright, I'm gonna get the bad out of the way first:While I appreciated the simple and easy-to-understand world building, it sometimes came across as too simple, or even uncreative。 The Barren, The Waste, The Phenomenon。。。 they're all great, ominous names separately, but when they all exist in one world (or more accurately, one city), it's repetitive and not as interesting。 I also found Kate and August's relationship to develop too quickly for my tastes。 Don't get me wrong, I appre 4。5/5 Stars!!!Alright, I'm gonna get the bad out of the way first:While I appreciated the simple and easy-to-understand world building, it sometimes came across as too simple, or even uncreative。 The Barren, The Waste, The Phenomenon。。。 they're all great, ominous names separately, but when they all exist in one world (or more accurately, one city), it's repetitive and not as interesting。 I also found Kate and August's relationship to develop too quickly for my tastes。 Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that they weren't suspicious of and at each other's throats as much as they could have been, but it was a pace that also sacrificed some realistic development in favor of furthering the plot。But the good news is, I think those are my only complaints! I loved this book otherwise! It had a fascinating premise that allowed the author to explore humanity and monsters and magic and dystopia。 Honestly, that's the best word I can use for how I feel about this book: fascinated。 Everything from how the monsters in Verity worked to how Kate and August themselves operated within this world where they were both outcasts for both different and similar reasons was just so interesting! 。。。more

Interesting premise and unique take on the monsters we create- but lacking something。 Can't quite put my finger on it, but I never felt truly invested with the characters or plot。。。 I pushed through, but was left with an unsatisfying "ending" that didn't leave much resolved。 I walked away without being able to say definitively what the message or purpose of the book as a whole was。 A "meh" read for me。 Interesting premise and unique take on the monsters we create- but lacking something。 Can't quite put my finger on it, but I never felt truly invested with the characters or plot。。。 I pushed through, but was left with an unsatisfying "ending" that didn't leave much resolved。 I walked away without being able to say definitively what the message or purpose of the book as a whole was。 A "meh" read for me。 。。。more

After a week of struggling, I'm finally done with this book。I'm feeling very conflicted about it though。 On one hand, the majority of it was boring and direction-less。 On the other hand, the ending was interesting。 There were times when I cared about the plot and characters, but those moments were few and far between。 I couldn't connect with the characters, especially Kate, I wasn't interested in the whole dystopian setting and there wasn't much going onp to keep me intrigued。 Character and worl After a week of struggling, I'm finally done with this book。I'm feeling very conflicted about it though。 On one hand, the majority of it was boring and direction-less。 On the other hand, the ending was interesting。 There were times when I cared about the plot and characters, but those moments were few and far between。 I couldn't connect with the characters, especially Kate, I wasn't interested in the whole dystopian setting and there wasn't much going onp to keep me intrigued。 Character and world building were great, but character motivations were lackluster。The concept of monsters was the only thing the book was hinging on, and even though the deeper concept associated with the creation of the monsters is unique, it wasn't enough to create a compelling plot。I might read the next book, not sure though。 But I had high hopes for this book and I am disappointed。 。。。more

ok so at fist it was harrrd to get into it bc it’s a whole new world and there are monsters and all of that so i was really lost at the beginning and i didn’t see what the plot was during the first half of the book。something i love about Schwab is that she puts us deep into the mind of the characters so we know their motives and all of that so it truly feels like we’re feeling through them, i really liked that。 Also the character development, even though it’s a kinda short book we can clearly se ok so at fist it was harrrd to get into it bc it’s a whole new world and there are monsters and all of that so i was really lost at the beginning and i didn’t see what the plot was during the first half of the book。something i love about Schwab is that she puts us deep into the mind of the characters so we know their motives and all of that so it truly feels like we’re feeling through them, i really liked that。 Also the character development, even though it’s a kinda short book we can clearly see how the characters change and that it’s something i LOVEEE。her writing style it’s so beautiful and it transports you into the history istg I FELT LIKE I WAS THERE and i mean it’s Victoria Schwab of course i was going to like this one so i’ll definitely read the next book。 。。。more

"Plenty of humans were monstrous, and plenty of monsters knew how to play at being human。"This is one of those books that just pulls you in, and since I knew that I wasn't going to get a thing done today for thinking about this story, it was pure delight to just turn myself over to Schwab's writing and enjoy the ride。 I adore indulgent reading days and Schwab made it worth it。 Simply a fun, suspenseful read。 "Plenty of humans were monstrous, and plenty of monsters knew how to play at being human。"This is one of those books that just pulls you in, and since I knew that I wasn't going to get a thing done today for thinking about this story, it was pure delight to just turn myself over to Schwab's writing and enjoy the ride。 I adore indulgent reading days and Schwab made it worth it。 Simply a fun, suspenseful read。 。。。more
