Summary

My name is Anastasia 。 。 。 The history books say I died 。 。 。 They don’t know the half of it。

Anastasia “Nastya” Romanov was given a single mission: to smuggle an ancient spell into her suitcase on her way to exile in Siberia。 It might be her family’s only salvation。 But the leader of the Bolshevik army is after them, and he’s hunted Romanov before。

Nastya’s only chances of saving herself and her family are either to release the spell and deal with the consequences, or to enlist help from Zash, the handsome soldier who doesn’t act like the average Bolshevik。 Nastya has only dabbled in magic, but it doesn’t frighten her half as much as her growing attraction to Zash。 She likes him。 She thinks he might even like her。

That is, until she’s on one side of a firing squad 。 。 。 and he’s on the other。

Wonderful tale of love and forgiveness in every form。 Brandes once again perfectly blends historic events with magic。

It was alright。This book is a retelling of the magic-infused stories about the last royal family of russia。 It is told from Anastasias point of view and takes place after the family is imprisoned and awaiting a definite decision about their future。 The ex-princess must navigate her brothers worsening health and her family’s dwindling hope。It’s an interesting short read。 The magic system could be explained better, I didn’t care for the MCs romance and as per usual I could have done without the Bo It was alright。This book is a retelling of the magic-infused stories about the last royal family of russia。 It is told from Anastasias point of view and takes place after the family is imprisoned and awaiting a definite decision about their future。 The ex-princess must navigate her brothers worsening health and her family’s dwindling hope。It’s an interesting short read。 The magic system could be explained better, I didn’t care for the MCs romance and as per usual I could have done without the Bonus Chapter/Epilogue。I thought the book handled interesting theme such as forgiveness and perseverance in the face of adversity in an easily digestible manner。 And I found it easy to feel with the characters。If you are interested in the myths surrounding the Russian revolution but don’t mind if Rasputin doesn’t have a prominent role, I would recommend this book。 。。。more

I am a big history nerd and a lover of 'Anastasia' the musical/movie, so thought I'd give this book a read。 I appreciated the specific little nods to history at some points in the book, particularly the soldiers line about if the Tsarvich requires a chair to die in then get him one; this is generally thought to be something that was said during the actual real life execution of the Romanovs。 The historical accuracy was decent - obviously it's fantasy so therefore not historically accurate in Ana I am a big history nerd and a lover of 'Anastasia' the musical/movie, so thought I'd give this book a read。 I appreciated the specific little nods to history at some points in the book, particularly the soldiers line about if the Tsarvich requires a chair to die in then get him one; this is generally thought to be something that was said during the actual real life execution of the Romanovs。 The historical accuracy was decent - obviously it's fantasy so therefore not historically accurate in Anastasia living and the magic etc。。。 but that was expected because it's loosely based on the real life events。 This book was alright but not my favourite book I've ever read and it was very predictable, especially at the end (I won't spoil it for you!)。 I probably wouldn't read it again because it wasn't particularly unique and it was like other books I've read before。 However, it may be other people's cup of tea, just not really mine! :) 。。。more

I loved Fawkes by Nadine Brandes, so I immediately snagged a copy of Romanov, and I am so glad I did! It is turning out to be a new favorite genre of mine!Final thoughts about this Young Adult book:Age Rating (that I would suggest): PG-13, mainly due to brutal assassinations, murders, and contemplation of suicide。Romance: Clean。 Just a simple kiss at the end。 Thank you, Nadine Brandes! 。。。more

This is my 100th book of 2021!It’s no secret that I love Russia。 When I found out about this book, I was so excited to read it。 Almost two years ago, I read another book about the Romanov Family, The Lost Crown by Sarah Miller, which was really amazing but also really sad。 The execution of the Romanov Family is one of the most tragic events in history, in my humble opinion。 It was brutal, unfair, and wrong。 That kind of violence was unnecessary; I understand there was a revolution and the commun This is my 100th book of 2021!It’s no secret that I love Russia。 When I found out about this book, I was so excited to read it。 Almost two years ago, I read another book about the Romanov Family, The Lost Crown by Sarah Miller, which was really amazing but also really sad。 The execution of the Romanov Family is one of the most tragic events in history, in my humble opinion。 It was brutal, unfair, and wrong。 That kind of violence was unnecessary; I understand there was a revolution and the communists wanted to overthrow the government, but really, that was horrendous and unethical。 On that note, let’s get into the review。Romanov by Nadine Brandes isn’t your average Romanov execution retelling。 Brandes intertwines history with fantastical elements, sticking with the idea that Rasputin could do magic which he used to heal Alexei, the sickly youngest Romanov。 (And now that Rasputin song is stuck in my head lol。) In the world the author has created, some people are “spell masters”, which means they can make magical spells out of an iridescent ink。 Anastasia is tasked with smuggling a spell that can save her family through confinement and exile。 While this is a fantasy novel with many unrealistic events, there are historical truths, as it was based on the real Romanov execution。 The Romanov family was held in captivity in the Ipatiev House, which was guarded by the Bolsheviks。 They were stripped of many rights and privileges, and unable to even go outside for long periods of time。 The way the Romanovs were treated is truly sad。 I won’t go on about it, though。 In this novel, Anastasia and her older sister Maria both fall in love with Bolshevik soldiers。 From the start, I knew it wasn’t going to end well; “parting is such sweet sorrow…”。 While Maria’s Bolshevik boyfriend meets his end in a horrifying yet realistic way, Anastasia and Zash eventually get their happily ever after。 I will say that there is a lot of violence and atrocity in this book, but it is not overly graphic, and it’s realistic to the Russian Revolution。 This book is very, very sad at some points as it is based on a real-life tragedy。 The end is bittersweet; it’s happy in some ways, but it’s somewhat sad when you look at the big picture。 Romanov is a heartrending yet hopeful novel, in which the characters demonstrate resilience, courage in the face of adversity, and the power of love and forgiveness。 I won’t say anything else about the plot, as not to give away spoilers, but if you like Russia, fantasy, and historical fiction, read this book!“。。。it takes more strength and courage to forgive than it does to enact revenge。” (page 305) 。。。more

This book is an Anastasia retelling and I have to say it really did it’s job being a historical fiction for teenagers。 I haven’t read that much of this genre if I’m being honest, but it has the potential of becoming a favourite。Anastasia Romanov was a strong princess and she never got scared or ran from a fight。 I really respect that。I loved the way this book told us the story about the Romanov family and what they went through on 1917。 It has romance, action, magic and history facts (just with This book is an Anastasia retelling and I have to say it really did it’s job being a historical fiction for teenagers。 I haven’t read that much of this genre if I’m being honest, but it has the potential of becoming a favourite。Anastasia Romanov was a strong princess and she never got scared or ran from a fight。 I really respect that。I loved the way this book told us the story about the Romanov family and what they went through on 1917。 It has romance, action, magic and history facts (just with the history facts I was already swooning)。Honestly, this book should be more recommended on social media。 I will probably reread this in the future。My favourite detail was that at the final pages the author specified what in the book was fiction and what actually went down on Russia。 This book was what the writer thought it happened to Alexei and Anastasia after all the disaster with the Bolsheviks, I want to think too that this story it’s just a continuation from what their lives might’ve been。 。。。more

Romanov is a magical retelling of Anastasia Romanov, exploring the myth where maybe Anastasia and her brother Alexei survived their family's execution in 1918 (by magic!)。 It's tricky to say why I felt slightly ambivalent about this。 I didn't *not* like it, but I didn't fall in love with it either - I'd put it at somehing like 3。5 stars。 Part of that may be the fact that I actually don't know anything about the Russian revolution other than watching the cartoon Anastasia many years ago so it jus Romanov is a magical retelling of Anastasia Romanov, exploring the myth where maybe Anastasia and her brother Alexei survived their family's execution in 1918 (by magic!)。 It's tricky to say why I felt slightly ambivalent about this。 I didn't *not* like it, but I didn't fall in love with it either - I'd put it at somehing like 3。5 stars。 Part of that may be the fact that I actually don't know anything about the Russian revolution other than watching the cartoon Anastasia many years ago so it just felt like there was something lost in translation (or just randomly lost)。But I think the biggest thing was that after reading Fawkes, I expected way more out of this than I actually got。 。。。more

I was excited to read this book since it was announced。 I love the history of the Romanov family and I grew up watching Anastasia on a constant loop。 This book was average。 I don’t know how else to explain it。 It wasn’t bad。 We get a detailed time when the family was isolated and I think the introduction of magic could have been really interesting, but it just fell flat。 I wasn’t into the weird love story。 (He’s no Dimitri!!!!!) Retelling + Romance + Magic + FamilyThose are the main themes of the story。 Of course, we all know what happened to the Romanov family and all the stories and tales about Anastasia (if you don't, I suggest you look it up, because it's so interesting and devastating)。In this book, the author gives us a new perspective on history by adding fantastic aspects。 It is basically history + magic and, although it seemed strange at first, in the end, it made sense for the plot。 And, for the PLOT works, th Retelling + Romance + Magic + FamilyThose are the main themes of the story。 Of course, we all know what happened to the Romanov family and all the stories and tales about Anastasia (if you don't, I suggest you look it up, because it's so interesting and devastating)。In this book, the author gives us a new perspective on history by adding fantastic aspects。 It is basically history + magic and, although it seemed strange at first, in the end, it made sense for the plot。 And, for the PLOT works, the author needed that element。 I don't know if it was for the best, but I didn't hate it either。I am a person who loves romance (as redundant as it sounds) and even though this book is not 100% focused on that, I will say it was given the time it needed。 If you want to read a purely historical romance book, this is not it。 Romanov focuses much more on the dynamics of this family and what happens after the _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (I will not say the word because it could be a spoiler)。In conclusion, I recommend reading this book, especially if you like retellings and magic。____Retelling + Romance + Magia + FamiliaEsos son los principales temas de la historia。 Por supuesto, todos conocemos lo que le sucedió a la familia Romanov y todas las historias y relatos que derivaron de Anastasia (si no las conoces, sugiero que lo busques, porque es muy interesante y devastador)。 En este libro la autora nos da una nueva perspectiva de la historia adicionando aspectos fantásticos。 Básicamente se juntó un elemento histórico con magia y, aunque al inicio me pareció extraño, al final tuvo sentido para la trama。 Y, para la TRAMA funciona, la autora necesitaba de ese elemento。 No sé si fue lo mejor, pero tampoco lo odié。 Yo soy una persona que ama el romance (por más redundante que suene) y a pesar de que este libro no se centra a su 100% en este, diría que le dio el tiempo que necesitaba。 Si quieres leer un libro puramente de romance histórico, este no lo es。 Romanov se centra mucho más en la dinámica de esta familia y en lo que pasa después de la _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (no diré la palabra, porque podría ser spoiler)。 En conclusión, recomiendo leer este libro, especialmente si te gustan los retellings y la magia。 。。。more

I've always been extremely interested in the Romanovs and have read quite a few books about them over the years, but Romanov by Nadine Brandes is easily my favorite。 While it combined history with elements of fantasy and was thus clearly fictional, this book breathed life into Anastasia and the rest of the royal Russian family like no other book ever has for me。 I highly recommend this one, but if you're anything like me, you should probably have an abundance of tissues handy。。。 Knowing the I've always been extremely interested in the Romanovs and have read quite a few books about them over the years, but Romanov by Nadine Brandes is easily my favorite。 While it combined history with elements of fantasy and was thus clearly fictional, this book breathed life into Anastasia and the rest of the royal Russian family like no other book ever has for me。 I highly recommend this one, but if you're anything like me, you should probably have an abundance of tissues handy。。。 Knowing the history beforehand does not make the tragic end of the Romanovs even a tiny bit less devastating。 This was really so, so good though and worth my little broken heart at 3 a。m。 💔 。。。more
