I finally got around to pursuing the Expanded Universe novels， and this book was AMAZING！ Thrawn is the ultimate Star Wars villain， and Zahn’s writing is amongst the best in the galaxy！

I had in GR that I'd read this before。 I didn't remember anything until about 2/3 maybe 3/4 of the way through the book / listen。 I remembered one section。 That was it。So I figure I had read it at some point， but anyhow。This audiobook was good。 The author tries to imitate the voices of the actors from the movies。 Some are better than others。 The Wookie besides Chewbacca is not so good。 It's weird。That being said I did like the voices and the sound effects。 Not sure if the sound effects are for t I had in GR that I'd read this before。 I didn't remember anything until about 2/3 maybe 3/4 of the way through the book / listen。 I remembered one section。 That was it。So I figure I had read it at some point， but anyhow。This audiobook was good。 The author tries to imitate the voices of the actors from the movies。 Some are better than others。 The Wookie besides Chewbacca is not so good。 It's weird。That being said I did like the voices and the sound effects。 Not sure if the sound effects are for the 20th-anniversary edition or not。 But they were not horrible either。 A couple of times， I have stopped listening to audiobooks that used music or noises， because they just didn't work。 These noises did not distract from the book。 。。。more

So， I got a bit shamed about not having read this book， so I checked out the audiobook and went to work in the evenings。It's ok。It has a very Star Wars feel to it， and the plot is good， while avoiding the "new superweapon" plot that so many Star Wars stories indulge in （Knights of the Old Republic， for example）， but in some ways， it felt uninspired。 And one of my big problems is Grand Admiral Thrawn。So， Thrawn's schtick is not just that he's a military genius， it's that he can examine a culture' So， I got a bit shamed about not having read this book， so I checked out the audiobook and went to work in the evenings。It's ok。It has a very Star Wars feel to it， and the plot is good， while avoiding the "new superweapon" plot that so many Star Wars stories indulge in （Knights of the Old Republic， for example）， but in some ways， it felt uninspired。 And one of my big problems is Grand Admiral Thrawn。So， Thrawn's schtick is not just that he's a military genius， it's that he can examine a culture's art and figure out tons about their culture。 Even really old art lets him make deductions about a modern society。 And I simply can't believe it。 We can't do that with our own species， which is why so many archaeology jokes center around calling something a "ritual item" is shorthand for "I have no clue"。 Furthermore， there's his sidekick， Captain Pellion （I'm listening， so I may have the spelling wrong）， who seems to exist solely to make Thrawn look smart。 It's disheartening， it's a boring interaction and makes the character less interesting。It's not a bad book， and I'm enjoying the second one， Dark Force Rising， well enough。 But this one is just mediocre。 。。。more

It's probably the best Star Wars novel ever。 The beginning of the Thrawn triology brings together a lot of new characters with the old familiar ones from the movies。 Mara Jade and Talon Karrde， who still appear in dozens of works outside this book series， are introduced， and through them and their organization it was shown first hand that there are not only two fighting factions in Star Wars， but also uninvolved or impartial factions。Also in this book， a new antagonist is introduced。 Grand Admir It's probably the best Star Wars novel ever。 The beginning of the Thrawn triology brings together a lot of new characters with the old familiar ones from the movies。 Mara Jade and Talon Karrde， who still appear in dozens of works outside this book series， are introduced， and through them and their organization it was shown first hand that there are not only two fighting factions in Star Wars， but also uninvolved or impartial factions。Also in this book， a new antagonist is introduced。 Grand Admiral Thrawn is considered one of the best Star Wars characters， a brilliant tactician who defeats his opponents through ingenuity and observation and not， as too often in Star Wars， by giant planet-killers or massive warships。 All in all， the opening of the Thrawn tiology is an excellent Star Wars novel that should be a must-read for any great Star Wars fan。 。。。more

Great book， characters are very consistent with with the original Star Wars trilogy and serves almost as a logical continuation of it。 Grand Admiral Thrawn is a a treat as a villain。 All around great read！ Kinda prefer it to the new movies。
