Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - In this essential Star Wars Legends novel--the first ever to take place after the events of the original trilogy--Grand Admiral Thrawn makes his debut on the galactic stage。

Five years ago, the Rebel Alliance destroyed the Death Star, defeated Darth Vader and the Emperor, and drove the remnants of the old Imperial Starfleet to a distant corner of the galaxy。 Princess Leia and Han Solo are married and expecting twins。 And Luke Skywalker has become the first in a long-awaited line of Jedi Knights。

But thousands of light-years away, the last of the Emperor's warlords, Grand Admiral Thrawn, has taken command of the shattered Imperial fleet, readied it for war, and pointed it at the fragile heart of the New Republic。 For this dark warrior has made a vital discovery that could destroy everything the courageous men and women of the Rebel Alliance fought so hard to build。

I finally got around to pursuing the Expanded Universe novels, and this book was AMAZING! Thrawn is the ultimate Star Wars villain, and Zahn’s writing is amongst the best in the galaxy!

It definitely is a story written before the prequels came out, or for that matter any expanded universe was around。 It relies entirely upon the original trilogy as source material, which while reading was very nostalgic。 As a story, it was very simple and easy to follow。 As a book, it was very readable and enjoyable。 Overall I'd recommend。 It definitely is a story written before the prequels came out, or for that matter any expanded universe was around。 It relies entirely upon the original trilogy as source material, which while reading was very nostalgic。 As a story, it was very simple and easy to follow。 As a book, it was very readable and enjoyable。 Overall I'd recommend。 。。。more

The fact that the storyline takes place after Return of the Jedi and has all my favorite characters is awesome, but the storyline is not as epic as I had wished it to be so I couldn't give it 5 stars。 Its the first in a series and maybe the epic-ness will come later。 I do want to read the rest of the series though because it is good。 The fact that the storyline takes place after Return of the Jedi and has all my favorite characters is awesome, but the storyline is not as epic as I had wished it to be so I couldn't give it 5 stars。 Its the first in a series and maybe the epic-ness will come later。 I do want to read the rest of the series though because it is good。 。。。more

So, I mainly spent time my time listening to this on Audible。 It was such a gorgeous thing to listen to! I love Mara Jade so very much, I know where things go for her and Luke and I'm very excited for those enemies to lovers, I love so very much as a writing troupe。 Getting to hear Leia be super badass that she already is as a character, but actually getting to see her use a lightsaber/practice made me very happy。 Getting to hear Hon also be a protective husband was sweet as well。 I look forward So, I mainly spent time my time listening to this on Audible。 It was such a gorgeous thing to listen to! I had in GR that I'd read this before。 I didn't remember anything until about 2/3 maybe 3/4 of the way through the book / listen。 I remembered one section。 That was it。So I figure I had read it at some point, but anyhow。This audiobook was good。 The author tries to imitate the voices of the actors from the movies。 Some are better than others。 The Wookie besides Chewbacca is not so good。 It's weird。That being said I did like the voices and the sound effects。 Not sure if the sound effects are for t I had in GR that I'd read this before。 I didn't remember anything until about 2/3 maybe 3/4 of the way through the book / listen。 I remembered one section。 That was it。So I figure I had read it at some point, but anyhow。This audiobook was good。 The author tries to imitate the voices of the actors from the movies。 Some are better than others。 The Wookie besides Chewbacca is not so good。 It's weird。That being said I did like the voices and the sound effects。 Not sure if the sound effects are for the 20th-anniversary edition or not。 But they were not horrible either。 A couple of times, I have stopped listening to audiobooks that used music or noises, because they just didn't work。 These noises did not distract from the book。 。。。more

This is the first Star Wars book I’ve ever read, and it was quite fun。 It’s nice to dive into the Star Wars universe and read a new story with familiar characters。 The one thing I really didn’t like, was the INSANE amount of coincidences in this book。 The amount of times the characters just happen to go to the same place or run into each other in such a huge galaxy is a bit absurd。 It made reading the book painful at times because of how unbelievable the circumstances were。 As far as Thrawn goes This is the first Star Wars book I’ve ever read, and it was quite fun。 It’s nice to dive into the Star Wars universe and read a new story with familiar characters。 The one thing I really didn’t like, was the INSANE amount of coincidences in this book。 The amount of times the characters just happen to go to the same place or run into each other in such a huge galaxy is a bit absurd。 It made reading the book painful at times because of how unbelievable the circumstances were。 As far as Thrawn goes, I really like him as a villain and I’m excited to see how the story develops。 Fun, but I hope the next book is better。 。。。more

It’s fan fiction but at least it feels more like Star Wars than the last Jedi。Hopefully this is just build up to an actual story in the next two though。

Good story。 Very good characters description and settings。 Events have a reason to happen, unlike in some SW movies。 I was listening to audiobook and about halfway through I decided to play a little game。 Put 1 buck in a jar every time you hear a word "sardonically。" 2 more books and I'll have enough for new car 。。。 he said sardonically。 It's like Mr。 Zahn found this adverb and then used it to boost his word count。 Good story。 Very good characters description and settings。 Events have a reason to happen, unlike in some SW movies。 I was listening to audiobook and about halfway through I decided to play a little game。 Put 1 buck in a jar every time you hear a word "sardonically。" 2 more books and I'll have enough for new car 。。。 he said sardonically。 It's like Mr。 Zahn found this adverb and then used it to boost his word count。 。。。more

So, I got a bit shamed about not having read this book, so I checked out the audiobook and went to work in the evenings。It's ok。It has a very Star Wars feel to it, and the plot is good, while avoiding the "new superweapon" plot that so many Star Wars stories indulge in (Knights of the Old Republic, for example), but in some ways, it felt uninspired。 And one of my big problems is Grand Admiral Thrawn。So, Thrawn's schtick is not just that he's a military genius, it's that he can examine a culture' So, I got a bit shamed about not having read this book, so I checked out the audiobook and went to work in the evenings。It's ok。It has a very Star Wars feel to it, and the plot is good, while avoiding the "new superweapon" plot that so many Star Wars stories indulge in (Knights of the Old Republic, for example), but in some ways, it felt uninspired。 And one of my big problems is Grand Admiral Thrawn。So, Thrawn's schtick is not just that he's a military genius, it's that he can examine a culture's art and figure out tons about their culture。 Even really old art lets him make deductions about a modern society。 And I simply can't believe it。 We can't do that with our own species, which is why so many archaeology jokes center around calling something a "ritual item" is shorthand for "I have no clue"。 Furthermore, there's his sidekick, Captain Pellion (I'm listening, so I may have the spelling wrong), who seems to exist solely to make Thrawn look smart。 It's disheartening, it's a boring interaction and makes the character less interesting。It's not a bad book, and I'm enjoying the second one, Dark Force Rising, well enough。 But this one is just mediocre。 。。。more

It's probably the best Star Wars novel ever。 The beginning of the Thrawn triology brings together a lot of new characters with the old familiar ones from the movies。 Mara Jade and Talon Karrde, who still appear in dozens of works outside this book series, are introduced, and through them and their organization it was shown first hand that there are not only two fighting factions in Star Wars, but also uninvolved or impartial factions。Also in this book, a new antagonist is introduced。 Grand Admir It's probably the best Star Wars novel ever。 The beginning of the Thrawn triology brings together a lot of new characters with the old familiar ones from the movies。 Mara Jade and Talon Karrde, who still appear in dozens of works outside this book series, are introduced, and through them and their organization it was shown first hand that there are not only two fighting factions in Star Wars, but also uninvolved or impartial factions。Also in this book, a new antagonist is introduced。 Grand Admiral Thrawn is considered one of the best Star Wars characters, a brilliant tactician who defeats his opponents through ingenuity and observation and not, as too often in Star Wars, by giant planet-killers or massive warships。 All in all, the opening of the Thrawn tiology is an excellent Star Wars novel that should be a must-read for any great Star Wars fan。 。。。more

thrawn is actually a cool villain (most of the time)。 he's, like, actually dangerous, and pretty iconic。 very cool 👍。with OT heroes being the main protagonists, i was worried that there would be way too many OT references, but it wasn't too bad tbh so that was noice。 thrawn is actually a cool villain (most of the time)。 he's, like, actually dangerous, and pretty iconic。 very cool 👍。with OT heroes being the main protagonists, i was worried that there would be way too many OT references, but it wasn't too bad tbh so that was noice。 。。。more

Simply amazing! The original sequel to the Return of the Jedi。 Keeps the trilogy's mood while bringing in some new compelling characters in a very well built story。 Simply amazing! 4/5This was a page turner, and Thrawn is definitely an excellent villain/ antihero。 Wasn’t sure I would enjoy reading books in the Star Wars universe, but this was a great start that makes me want to keep going!

Fun and nostalgic。 I last read it in 5th grade。

Very good novel, my only issue is that is legends, and I have to say, Timothy Zahn improved a lot in his abilities as a writer, not that this books is bad, but his new novels are outstanding

Always good to read the classics。

Great book, characters are very consistent with with the original Star Wars trilogy and serves almost as a logical continuation of it。 Grand Admiral Thrawn is a a treat as a villain。 All around great read! Kinda prefer it to the new movies。

This became a better sequel series than we got on film。 One big reason for that is that these books were published before the prequel trilogy added plot holes that were too big to overcome。 This wasn't bad, and Zahn did add some character depth, but it is too long。 When Disney bought the franchise and went a different direction, this became non-canon。 This became a better sequel series than we got on film。 One big reason for that is that these books were published before the prequel trilogy added plot holes that were too big to overcome。 This wasn't bad, and Zahn did add some character depth, but it is too long。 When Disney bought the franchise and went a different direction, this became non-canon。 。。。more

Read this years ago, and it was fun to come back to it again, especially now after the relaunch/reboot of the Star Wars universe via Disney。 Still one of the best Star Wars novels ever written; interesting to compare to how the canon has changed now。 Thrawn is back, but Zahn's Disneyverse novels make him much less cold and evil。 He's still great and compelling- there's a reason he was brought into the canon in the new Disney Star Wars- but he's definitely been made much more sympathetic now than Read this years ago, and it was fun to come back to it again, especially now after the relaunch/reboot of the Star Wars universe via Disney。 Still one of the best Star Wars novels ever written; interesting to compare to how the canon has changed now。 Thrawn is back, but Zahn's Disneyverse novels make him much less cold and evil。 He's still great and compelling- there's a reason he was brought into the canon in the new Disney Star Wars- but he's definitely been made much more sympathetic now than he is here。 Here Thrawn is no doubt the Bad Guy, but what a Bad Guy!! 4。5 starsReally enjoyed reading a SW book again! I've always heard fans rave about the Thrawn books and now I've started to see what they mean。 This was a really interesting read that had a good balance of action and political/military intrigue。 I loved getting to hang out with Luke, Leia and Han and meet some new characters, including Mara Jade。 Looking forward to seeing where this goes! 4。5 starsReally enjoyed reading a SW book again! It took a little while to get the story set up, but once it did, I was riveted。 I understand this was a re-introduction to characters and relationships after the original trilogy, but there were some events and some lines that were rather unnecessary throwbacks。 (Even when the characters acknowledged how familiar a scenario or statment was, it annoyed me)。 Overall, great story, great introduction of new characters。
