I was hugely excited to see there was a new Eddie Flynn book and even more so when I managed to snag myself an early e-copy from Netgalley。This was everything I’ve come to expect from Cavanagh’s writing and an Eddie Flynn case – a case that seems impossible to win, some interesting (and not always legal) tactics, violence, determination and a lot of heart。The case this time was perhaps the hardest Eddie has faced so far, facing off against a prosecutor who always fought for a death sentence and I was hugely excited to see there was a new Eddie Flynn book and even more so when I managed to snag myself an early e-copy from Netgalley。This was everything I’ve come to expect from Cavanagh’s writing and an Eddie Flynn case – a case that seems impossible to win, some interesting (and not always legal) tactics, violence, determination and a lot of heart。The case this time was perhaps the hardest Eddie has faced so far, facing off against a prosecutor who always fought for a death sentence and had a high conviction rate, Eddie is not only fighting for justice but also for his clients life。 To make matters worse the prosecutor is corrupt and seems to have the entire local police force working for him。As always the characterisation in this was strong, Eddie’s new business partner Kate, PI Bloch and the lovely Harry in a consulting role were just as wonderful as last time we saw them – I really like Bloch and I have a feeling there is a lot more of her to get to know。In a link that a Cavanagh himself points out in the book this case has overtones of the one in Harper Lee’s classic To Kill a Mockingbird。 Eddie’s client is a young black male accused of murdering the pretty young white girl he worked with, there is a thread of racism running through the case and that makes Eddies job even harder。Yet again though Cavanagh manages to show some of the better sides of humanity even while the story is centred around some of its worst bits。 I did actually work out who the real killer was before the reveal this time, but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the book。Not sure the tag line is completely accurate on this one – but it gives a feel for what’s going on, still is a bit misleading though。Another gripping, twisty, heart stopping case for Eddie and a great read。With thanks to Orion and Netgalley for an e-copy in exchange for honest review。The Devil’s Advocate will publish on 5th August 2021 。。。more

He finds himself there every single time and we watch as his team begin to investigate, a task that seems almost impossible from the start。 I loved the supporting characters and the fierce character created with Kate。 As you all know, I love a legal crime fiction and this was fabulous。 Thanks to the team at Hachette Australia for this gifted review copy。 。。。more

I’ve only read a couple of Steve Cavanagh’s Eddie Flynn novels in the past and always reflect on how I miss the golden days of the legal procedural。Cavanagh manages to easily traverse the balance between the mystery / crime solving element and showcasing the (both) boring and enterprising foibles of the justice system。 He's also created very likeable characters in the ensemble cast supporting Eddie and – in some ways – I find myself drawn as much to them as I do to the former con-man turned-lawy I’ve only read a couple of Steve Cavanagh’s Eddie Flynn novels in the past and always reflect on how I miss the golden days of the legal procedural。Cavanagh manages to easily traverse the balance between the mystery / crime solving element and showcasing the (both) boring and enterprising foibles of the justice system。 He's also created very likeable characters in the ensemble cast supporting Eddie and – in some ways – I find myself drawn as much to them as I do to the former con-man turned-lawyer。Read my review here: https://www。debbish。com/books-literat。。。 。。。more

An excellent crime thriller, gripping from the start and so well plotted, this was a fabulous read! Even if you haven't read any Eddie Flynn stories before, this is such a good thriller, you will however get a much better character appreciation if you read the earlier books, all of which are also excellent。 It's such a pleasure as a reader to really enjoy a series, be looking forward to the next one and then be blown away by it! Eddie and his team need to prove that Andy Dubois is innocent and save him from death row and the clutches of twisted attorney, Randal Korn。 The lengths Korn will go to are deadly, racism from past and present America shows its ugly face。 The sheer amount of research put into this book really adds some weight to the story。 The team of Eddie, Harry, Kate and Bloch work so well together, they are vibrant and well drawn。 It's pacy, every time you think they are getting somewhere, there's another twist and it all flows along perfectly。 I really enjoyed it and would certainly recommend it as an excellent crime thriller。 。。。more

This is why Steve Cavanagh is an auto-buy author for me。 His Eddie Flynn series just keeps getting better and better and The Devil’s Advocate did not disappoint。Eddie and his team find themselves well and truly out of their comfort zone in a small town in Alabama, where the justice system and law enforcement work to their own set of rules。 Brought in to try and save a defendant from the death penalty, everything is stacked against them and their innocent client。 Can the team work their magic and This is why Steve Cavanagh is an auto-buy author for me。 His Eddie Flynn series just keeps getting better and better and The Devil’s Advocate did not disappoint。Eddie and his team find themselves well and truly out of their comfort zone in a small town in Alabama, where the justice system and law enforcement work to their own set of rules。 Brought in to try and save a defendant from the death penalty, everything is stacked against them and their innocent client。 Can the team work their magic and save the client’s life or will they lose theirs in the process? This book was action packed and kept me guessing until the very end。 I genuinely wasn’t sure how the team were going to come out of this case in one piece and it was so shocking at times。 At one point I had to stop reading to catch my breath and recover!Steve just has this brilliant way of crafting the story so that even though you kind of know what’s happening, because you read some chapters from the ‘villains’ point of view, you don’t actually know what’s going on and what’s going to happen next。 I love how he builds the case and reveals more and more as the story unfolds。 Eddie, Harry, Kate and Bloch。 I adore these characters and I’m fully invested in them and their well-being。 But Steve also writes amazing villains。 They are truly despicable and I love that! What more can I say other than I’m a huge fan and cannot wait for the next one! The latest in Steve Cavanagh's legal thriller series featuring ex-con man, New York lawyer, Eddie Flynn, draws parallels between contemporary American realities with its echoes of the 1930s Alabama depicted in To Kill a Mockingbird with the entrenched racism of Maycomb, and the iconic lawyer, Atticus Finch, defending a black man falsely accused of rape。 Eddie, and his team of Harry Ford, his law firm partner, Kate Brooks, and the tough Melissa Bloch leave the security of their New York office to The latest in Steve Cavanagh's legal thriller series featuring ex-con man, New York lawyer, Eddie Flynn, draws parallels between contemporary American realities with its echoes of the 1930s Alabama depicted in To Kill a Mockingbird with the entrenched racism of Maycomb, and the iconic lawyer, Atticus Finch, defending a black man falsely accused of rape。 Eddie, and his team of Harry Ford, his law firm partner, Kate Brooks, and the tough Melissa Bloch leave the security of their New York office to travel to Buckstown, Alabama, to defend an innocent young black man, Andy Dubois, from being put on death row for the brutally vicious and ritualistic murder of student Skylar Edwards。 The odds are against them, the evidence against Andy seems insurmountable, including 2 confessions and if that was not enough, there are well organised white supremacists led by The Pastor with deadly plans。In what is Eddie's toughest case, he faces a formidable foe in the shape of the powerful District Attorney Randal Korn, a man who goes for the death penalty in all his cases, and his success rate is unsurpassed in the country, he has never lost。 The sinister Korn, reeking of death and decay, doesn't care how he wins his cases, by fair means or foul, nor whether the defendant is innocent and he is aided and abetted by the corrupt local law enforcement department, run by Sheriff Colt Lomax。 Eddie doesn't go in blind to the dangers he is walking into, Andy's previous lawyer, Cody Warren has gone missing, along with critical evidence that would have proved his client's innocence。 Eddie and his team face hostility from locals convinced of Andy's guilt, but there are greater threats, a greater evil and malevolence at play that lies at the heart of why Skylar was murdered。 Cavanagh's fast paced and twisty storytelling is full of thrills and spills galore, packed with sky high levels of suspense and tension, so much so that I was turning the pages as fast as I could until I reached the end。 The majority of the book has Eddie uncertain as to whether justice will prevail, but his principles will not allow him to give up, despite knowing his life and those of his team are at stake。 This is a wonderfully dark and intense legal thriller, where once again Eddie falls back on a skill set acquired from his past as a con man。 Flynn is one of my favourite fictional lawyers, and I am hugely anticipating his next outing。 Highly recommended to all crime and thriller fans。 Many thanks to the publisher for an ARC。 。。。more

It's another fantastic, twisted, dark and highly entertaining read fellow Eddie Flynn fans will most likely devour like there is no tomorrow。I always love my time with Eddie Flynn and the rest of the gang, and it's been good to return after that shocking plot twist in the previous book (those who have read it will know what I'm talking about)。 This is one of those series where it's best to read the books in order, or at least the previous two before you start reading The Devil's Advocate。 You will be missing out on both character background and developments in the previous books otherwise。。。 And they are all brilliant reads in the first place。 In this sixth book, Eddie Flynn and the rest have another dangerous and twisted case on their hands, and it's been interesting to see the new dynamics with Kate and Bloch。 They first appeared in the previous book and are key in this new story too, and I like the new balance。The Devil's Advocate isn't afraid to go dark and touch some heavy topics including racial discrimination, white nationalism, terrorism, violence, death row, innocent men being condemned to death。。。 Oh yes, this is not an easy read, and disturbing, shocking and twisted is an accurate description for this story。 I liked how the elements were incorporated into the story though and how they helped shine a light just how biased a trial in a small town in the South could be。 The plot itself is well developed, highly entertaining and multi-layered thanks to the multiple POVs; there are so many twists and turns to keep you busy along the way that you won't even realize you keep turning those pages and suddenly arrive at the end。The Devil's Advocate is another action-packed, pitch black, exhilarating and entertaining ride that fans of the Eddie Flynn series will love。 Nail-bitingly good and without doubt one of my favorite books so far this year! The opening chapter is chilling but that is just the beginning, as Eddie becomes involved in a murder case in the small town of Buckstown in Alabama。 Steve Cavanagh captures the small town so brilliantly that the reader is made to sweat in rivulets reaching this highly antagonistic place。 The pacing of the story in the first few chapters is so intense that I did forcefully take a break from reading and walked around to keep my galloping heart at a steady rhythm。 The case is gonna be the toughest in Eddie’s career, the town as a whole has already condemned Andy Dubois to a guilty verdict, the DA is an overzealous murderer hell-bent on getting the death row for Andy, there are 2 confessions, DNA evidence linking Andy to the crime and Eddie has come into the scene after the representing lawyer goes missing。 On the face of such irreversible stacks piled up like a tower, Eddie and Harry arrive to find themselves with no rooms to stay and no diners ready to serve food。 With the sweltering heat ready to take the skin off their backs, Eddie with Harry, Kate, and Bloch has no choice but to be as cunning and wily as the prosecutor’s team。This is my second book by Steve Cavanagh and Eddie Flynn has become one of my favorite characters。 His quirky ways to get things done, the sleight of hand tricks he conjures to overcome the odds against him are so crafty that one can’t help but cheer him on from the stands。 And it is just not Eddie, I loved how the author gives Kate to shine in the courtroom too, one of the scenes where she cross-examines the medical examiner is simply pure gold。 The complex story does take a turn with white supremacism and bigotry coming into play and honestly, it was a relief to breathe a little easier with scenes shifting from the courtroom to the hidden motive behind the murder of Skylar Edwards。Engrossing 🌪️ 🌪️ 🌪️ 🌪️ 🌪️Highly recommended legal thriller。Many thanks to Net Galley, Orion Publishing Group, and the author for a chance to read and review this book。 All opinions are expressed voluntarily。This review is published in my blog https://rainnbooks。com/, Goodreads, Amazon India, Medium。com, Facebook, and Twitter。 。。。more

I couldn’t put this book down。 I’ve loved Steve Cavanagh’s series about a con artist turned defence lawyer, Eddie, right from the very first book and in my opinion it just keeps getting better and better。 The Devil’s Advocate is a real page turner!Eddie is asked to defend young Andy Dubois who has been accused of murdering Skylar Edwards, a co worker at a local bar。 They both left together after their shift but Skylar is later discovered dead and Andy is the only suspect。 However he claims he didn’t do it despite an early confession and Korn, the rather unpleasant local Prosecutor, is keen to have him convicted and sent to the electric chair。 Prosecuting death penalty cases seems to be his hobby and he doesn’t seem to care whether his victims are innocent or guilty。The town itself is hostile to Eddie as they believe Andy is guilty and it doesn’t help that he is black in a town that contains some very prejudiced people including white supremacists 。This is a very topical novel which examines some difficult themes as well as being a fabulous page turner and legal thriller which kept me guessing until the very last page。 It really made me think about how an advanced democratic country like the US can still sentence people to death despite the fact that mistakes cannot be rectified once the deed is done。This is definitely a five star read for me and highly recommended。Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my arc in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I have enjoyed the books from the Eddie Flynn series that I have read and after reading this I know that I need to read the couple that I have missed。 The Devil’s Advocate could be read as a standalone but I would recommend reading the earlier books if you want to know more about the characters, in particular, Eddie。 I knew that this book was going to be a favourite from the prologue, it isn’t often that just a few pages can leave me feeling horror and fear over the actions of one of the charact I have enjoyed the books from the Eddie Flynn series that I have read and after reading this I know that I need to read the couple that I have missed。 The Devil’s Advocate could be read as a standalone but I would recommend reading the earlier books if you want to know more about the characters, in particular, Eddie。 I knew that this book was going to be a favourite from the prologue, it isn’t often that just a few pages can leave me feeling horror and fear over the actions of one of the characters。 Even more so, because they were totally unexpected。 This feeling didn’t diminish throughout the entire novel。 I can imagine that there are communities that exist like the one here in parts of America。There are a few nice people in the novel but nearly all of them are forced into being little help to Eddie and his team。 There are threats and also promises。 Offers of help which had a high price to pay。 What was evident throughout this novel is how easy it was to manipulate somebody who was grieving。 There was no compassion and no remorse。 There was guilt from some, but only when it was too late。 I also noticed that the ones who saw through the act of kindness were on the whole female。 It is difficult to review without revealing the plot but this novel is extremely powerful, especially with recent events around the world。 I felt horror at some of it but this was offset by the way Eddie worked。 All of his team made me want to smile and clap。A brilliant addition to a well established series 。。。more

Someone is prepared to kill for secrets to be left uncovered and their message to be heard。 The bodies are stacking up and Eddie’s may be among them。 If you have read Steve Cavanagh’s books before, you will have met the absolute genius that is Eddie Flynn。 You’ll already know something about what is heading your way in the pages of The Devil’s Advocate - Eddie Flynn’s insightful legal mind, a near impossible case with the odds stack against him, revelations and danger for Flynn and his client around every corner。 In this latest instalment, you will get everything you anticipated, everything you love from Steve Cavanagh’s books and a whole lot more as well。 The Devil’s Advocate is a nail biting, heart wrenching and brilliantly clever legal thriller。 It’s no secret that I am a massive fan of the author and the character but the Devil’s advocate exceeded my expectation and made me love the series of books even more than I could have thought possible。 I loved the stellar team that Eddie surrounds himself with。 They are an unbeatable combination。 I wish I could be more Bloch or have Kate’s shrewd mind and Harry’s insight into people。 I really enjoyed the chapters written from the different characters 。 They gave valuable insight in to the events of the book and into the thoughts of the depraved Korn and the true killer。 Cavanagh wrote the tension of the trial and the danger outside of the courtroom perfectly。 There were times when I was reading the book that I had remind myself to breathe because I had held my breath across several pages, desperate to know what happened next。 If that isn’t amazing writing, I don’t know what is。 These moments of tension were interspersed with perfectly timed dry humour - I am looking at you Harry with your 101 Dalmatians comment! Favourite moment - when the power of fiction leads to life altering consequences 。 That was a really great touch。 The Devil’s Advocate is going to be your book of 2021 if the love tense and fast paced fiction, legal thrillers, books that explore morality and corruption in society or any book that makes you feel and make you think long after you finish the last page。 Not to be missed! Thank you to Steve Cavanagh, Orion Publishing and Netgalley for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of the book。 。。。more

With thanks to NetGalley and Orion for the ARC。Steve Cavanagh has come up with the goods yet again。Eddie Flynn is a New Yorker to the sole of his boots, so how would he get on down south in deepest Alabama? He, and his team, finds themselves defending Andy Dubois, a young black kid charged with the murder of local high school sweetheart, the beautiful, and white, Skylar Edwards。Corruption, right wing extremism and racism are rife in the small Alabama town and Andy has no chance of a fair trial。St With thanks to NetGalley and Orion for the ARC。Steve Cavanagh has come up with the goods yet again。Eddie Flynn is a New Yorker to the sole of his boots, so how would he get on down south in deepest Alabama? He, and his team, finds themselves defending Andy Dubois, a young black kid charged with the murder of local high school sweetheart, the beautiful, and white, Skylar Edwards。Corruption, right wing extremism and racism are rife in the small Alabama town and Andy has no chance of a fair trial。Step in Team Flynn。Cavanaghs storytelling will keep you on the edge of your seat turning pages till way too late at night。A couple of things of note。The Eddie Flynn novels before this were Eddie Flynn novels, this is definitely now Team Flynn。The addition of his new partner, Kate, her investigator Bloch and ex Judge Harry, have really changed the dynamics of the book。 There are more POV's which expands the authors options。The other massive difference in this book is the setting。 Not only is it set in Alabama rather than New York, but there is very little of this book set in the courtroom。 We get 2/3 of the way through before we get into court。Neither of the above things take away from a brilliant story, very well told。 In fact I'd say this has opened up a whole load of new vistas for Mr。 Cavanagh。100% recommended。 Well done Steve。 。。。more

My favourite fictional lawyer returns。 Another awesome read。 Eddie Flynn heads from his New York home base and heads to America’s south, after being enlisted to defend a young man charged with murder。 This proves to be Eddie’s toughest case yet。 The odds – and the system – are stacked so far against Eddie and his team, I was so angry whilst reading and following the progression through the case。 The insular town garner forces against the outsiders and Eddie must use all his wits and tricks to tr My favourite fictional lawyer returns。 Another awesome read。 Eddie Flynn heads from his New York home base and heads to America’s south, after being enlisted to defend a young man charged with murder。 This proves to be Eddie’s toughest case yet。 The odds – and the system – are stacked so far against Eddie and his team, I was so angry whilst reading and following the progression through the case。 The insular town garner forces against the outsiders and Eddie must use all his wits and tricks to try and secure freedom for his client。 Fast paced, compelling legal drama。 Steve Cavanagh delivers again, a must read author。 。。。more

"When you see something that is not right, not just, not fair, you have a moral obligation to say something" In his Author's notes Steve Cavanagh uses this quote from a civil rights activist, John Lewis, speaking in December 2019。 This book is very apt for the times we are living in now and is alarming to think that the atrocities that are wrote about could have or be happening still。 I was delighted to be one of the lucky readers to be picked for the next installment in Eddie Flynn's cases。 It "When you see something that is not right, not just, not fair, you have a moral obligation to say something" In his Author's notes Steve Cavanagh uses this quote from a civil rights activist, John Lewis, speaking in December 2019。 This book is very apt for the times we are living in now and is alarming to think that the atrocities that are wrote about could have or be happening still。 I was delighted to be one of the lucky readers to be picked for the next installment in Eddie Flynn's cases。 It doesn't disappoint, Eddie and the whole team have to take on an evil corrupt District Attorney who takes great delight in imposing the death penalty, a police team who have no morals and a whole town baying for the blood of Andy Dubois who is accused of killing Skylar Edwards。 This is one of Eddie's toughest cases yet。 I don't want to give anything away but my one very minute criticism (if you can call it that) is I felt the ending was slightly rushed compared to the rest of the book。 Fabulous read and leaves me waiting now for the next installment。 How Steve can top this though I don't know Many thanks to Netgalley and Orion publishers for the advanced copy, my opinions are my ownPublished 5th August 。。。more

Thanks to Netgalley and Orion for an advance copy。 This is another great Eddie Flynn novel。 If you want a synopsis, click on the book, you wont get one here。The prologue introduces the reader to two characters。 I was hooked from that point and there more twists and turns than a bowl of spaghetti。 If you like a courtroom drama, a mystery or a thriller, read this book。 Better still, start from the first Eddie Flynn book and see how he's evolved。 Steve Cavanagh is a remarkable and brilliant author。 Thanks to Netgalley and Orion for an advance copy。 This is another great Eddie Flynn novel。 If you want a synopsis, click on the book, you wont get one here。The prologue introduces the reader to two characters。 I was hooked from that point and there more twists and turns than a bowl of spaghetti。 If you like a courtroom drama, a mystery or a thriller, read this book。 Better still, start from the first Eddie Flynn book and see how he's evolved。 Steve Cavanagh is a remarkable and brilliant author。 。。。more

A fantastic addition to the Eddie Flynn series which sees us reunited with well known characters from the previous books (this could be read as a standalone however)I really got caught up with this story as Eddie, Kate, Harry and Bloch find themselves as public enemy number 1 in Buckstown, Alabama when they arrive to defend Andy Dubois, a quiet young man who has been accused of murdering a young woman。 Coerced into making a false statement by the corrupt town sherrif and District Attorney, Eddie A fantastic addition to the Eddie Flynn series which sees us reunited with well known characters from the previous books (this could be read as a standalone however)I really got caught up with this story as Eddie, Kate, Harry and Bloch find themselves as public enemy number 1 in Buckstown, Alabama when they arrive to defend Andy Dubois, a quiet young man who has been accused of murdering a young woman。 Coerced into making a false statement by the corrupt town sherrif and District Attorney, Eddie is convinced that Andy is innocent but really has his work cut out against a DA who is determined only the death penalty will be the right outcome。 The closed off small town mentality really reminded me of early John Grisham and is written with such detailed description you find yourself getting angry at the complete injustice of everything that is happening。 I was completely enthralled and also slightly puzzled at just how Eddie would be able to work himself out of this one! The tension is kept up throughout the book, barely giving you time to breathe!I'm really glad that the author has kept the momentum going with another outstanding book and can't wait to read the next installment。 Highly recommended from me。 。。。more

A huge thank you to NetGalley for allowing me early access to read this book。 Another great Eddie Flynn novel that did not disappoint。 Eddie and Co took on a capital punishment case with all the odds stacked against them, which obviously presented us with lots of twists along the way。 I experienced so many different emotions throughout this book and I absolutely loved it and could not recommend it more。 Steve Cavanagh presents us with a great quality novel once again!!
