Summary

'Look after the dead', said the priests, 'and the dead will look after you'。

Wise words in all probability, but a tall order when you have just become the pharaoh of a small and penniless country whose largesse - and indeed treasury - is unlikely to stretch to the building of a monumental pyramid to honour your dead father。 And particularly when your only visible means of support is a recently acquired qualification from the Guild of Assassins where running a kingdom and basic financial acumen were not prerequisites for course entry。。。

The importance of having a dynasty to pay for them。 There reason for being。 Teppic went to assassin school and now has to figure out how to build a grand pyramid for his dad。 Teppic is the son of a pharaoh, a king and a god。 According to Childer he was relatively honest earning only 70 percent of income from undeclared trading。 His father is dead which is when you really start enjoying life。 Death was not a creature of time, past present and future are some to him。 He also appears in what every form is expected。 Camels are the smartest animals in the universe far more intelligent than dolphins。 They hide their intelligence from humans。 Camels are the reason why advanced math was invented in hot countries。 They also look at every rider that of all riders in the world they are the one the camel would least like to ride it。 I camel in distress is not a shy creature, does not hang mopping in bars, sob at old friends, it does not know what angst is。 Typical clever Pratchett one liners like “I come for where it rains every day… Who reigns every day?” Pratchett throws shade at math。 The creator used the wrong type of circles。 It is not even a proper number。 I mean 3。5 you can respect”。 I really enjoyed the humor in this one, especially the camels and the gods creating math。 。。。more

Of all the Discworld books I have read this has been my least favourite。I suspect it's because there were no characters from the earlier books [as it's a stand alone book] apart from Death。You Bastard coming up with the concept of Pi was fabulous。 You Bastard is a camel。 Of all the Discworld books I have read this has been my least favourite。I suspect it's because there were no characters from the earlier books [as it's a stand alone book] apart from Death。You Bastard coming up with the concept of Pi was fabulous。 You Bastard is a camel。 。。。more

The first time I read Pyramids, it was my favourite Discworld book to that point。 I think it is again, it's so great - and stands completely apart from the rest of the novels。 You can pick this one up on its own to get a feel for Mr。 Pratchett's writing style, and decide whether you'd like to read more。I don't remember whether there are further stories featuring Pteppic and Djelibeybi, but I don't remember any。 I sure hope so, though - this was a great tale! elu on õpetanud, et Kettamaailma raamatud, kus ühtegi nõida ei ole, ei ole。。。 nii head, kui need nõidadega。 samas ei tea ju lugema hakates kunagi ette, kas vanaema Weatherwax või Nanny Ogg ilmub kuskilt kasvõi korrakski välja。kuigi ma vist olen seda püramiidilugu kunagi ikkagi enne ka lugenud, sest olin üsna kindel, et see on nõiavaba, ja oligi。 muidu oli okei, natuke salamõrtsukaid ja siis hulk täitsa sümpaatseid egiptlasi, keda Kettamaailmas muidugi kuuidagi teisiti kutsutakse, aga sama värk。 elu on õpetanud, et Kettamaailma raamatud, kus ühtegi nõida ei ole, ei ole。。。 nii head, kui need nõidadega。 samas ei tea ju lugema hakates kunagi ette, kas vanaema Weatherwax või Nanny Ogg ilmub kuskilt kasvõi korrakski välja。kuigi ma vist olen seda püramiidilugu kunagi ikkagi enne ka lugenud, sest olin üsna kindel, et see on nõiavaba, ja oligi。 muidu oli okei, natuke salamõrtsukaid ja siis hulk täitsa sümpaatseid egiptlasi, keda Kettamaailmas muidugi kuuidagi teisiti kutsutakse, aga sama värk。 üldse on Pratchetti puhul see tore asi, et enamus tegelasi osutub lähemal uurimisel pigem sümpaatseteks。 kõik need surnud vaaraod siin kasvõi。kokku oli ikkagi võrdlemisi keskpärane, jään mõneks ajaks nüüd jälle nõidade juurde。 。。。more

A great Terry Pratchett Discworld stand-alone, although probably not the best entry point。Really satirical spin tale on “Egypt”-ish cultured ancient small country called Djelibeybi。 The concept of pyramids was intriguing and hilarious。 What stuck with me was how genius the end fate of the main villain ties into the mechanism of the pyramids and fate of Djelibeybi as a country

Pyramids is the 7th installment in the Discworld series and the 11th book in the series I have read。 We follow young Teppic as fate sees him recalled from his new life as an assassin back to his kingdom to become its next ruler。I thought the plot was a bit messy, and by that I mean there were things going on all over the place that didn't fit together as well as I would have liked to see。 It felt like the bit with the assassin's guild in Ankh Morpork or the bits with the Tsorteans and Ephebians Pyramids is the 7th installment in the Discworld series and the 11th book in the series I have read。 We follow young Teppic as fate sees him recalled from his new life as an assassin back to his kingdom to become its next ruler。I thought the plot was a bit messy, and by that I mean there were things going on all over the place that didn't fit together as well as I would have liked to see。 It felt like the bit with the assassin's guild in Ankh Morpork or the bits with the Tsorteans and Ephebians were there to try and show how different places within Discworld fit together, not to make a plot that felt cohesive。 I think this is something that Pratchett struggled a bit with earlier on in that he wasn't quite sure what the series was ultimately supposed to be, and he settled into a better grove later。 I think especially as the plot splintered into so many directions I felt like I just wanted it to stick to a more narrow lane。 I do think this book could have had a more self-contained plot and come out better as a result, especially as there was a core narrative they were following。The humour in this book was just okay。 I felt like Pratchett spent a lot of time just making the scenarios satirically humorous and not really that much on the quick quips that make the humour really pop。 Sure, there were a few bits I quite enjoyed (especially the bit about the unsolved axioms), but I feel like I've enjoyed a lot of other books more in that regard。 Even as the book spun in a direction where advanced math/science became a part of it (in the typical joking fashion Pratchett does), I felt like I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected I would from the start of it。 I have studied some advanced math so I thought I would enjoy him making fun of it a lot more than I actually wound up, and I thought it got a bit old a bit too fast。Overall I'd say this was one of my least favourite entries in the series。 I wouldn't say it was a bad book but a lot of other Discworld books are simply better than this。 Especially with this being a one-book-stand entry, I find I generally enjoy the main themes/series a little more。 I don't think I would recommend this if you hadn't already read some Discworld entries but if you are already invested in the series then it's a perfectly fine entry。 。。。more

Pyramids had a lot of funny moments, it just wasn't crammed with them, and I got a little bored with the plot。 I had to renew my ebook quite a few times。 Still, Pratchett remains one of my very favorite authors of all time。 I mean, he named a fictional kingdom Dejelibeybi。。。 this is pure comedy gold, and I bow to him。 Pyramids had a lot of funny moments, it just wasn't crammed with them, and I got a little bored with the plot。 I had to renew my ebook quite a few times。 Still, Pratchett remains one of my very favorite authors of all time。 I mean, he named a fictional kingdom Dejelibeybi。。。 this is pure comedy gold, and I bow to him。 。。。more

This re-read is showing me that this is the one where Pterry reaches a perfect blend of story and humour。 The jokes come thick and fast as in some of the previous ones and blend seamlessly with an engaging story。An absolute pleasure。

One of the Discworld novels I rarely heard mentioned at all, Pyramids was more than a pleasant surprise。 Being a completely standalone story, in the vain of Small Gods, Pyramids feels satisfyingly complete and it really made me wonder why its so obscured part of the Discworld。 I actually found it to be one of the funniest Discworld novels I've read so far。 Well, when you have a mathematician camel named You Bastard in the book, its hard to expect a grim read from that point on。 One of the Discworld novels I rarely heard mentioned at all, Pyramids was more than a pleasant surprise。 Being a completely standalone story, in the vain of Small Gods, Pyramids feels satisfyingly complete and it really made me wonder why its so obscured part of the Discworld。 I actually found it to be one of the funniest Discworld novels I've read so far。 Well, when you have a mathematician camel named You Bastard in the book, its hard to expect a grim read from that point on。 。。。more

Lots of funny stuff here。 Some of the characters are intriguing, but nobody gets developed。 Themes of belief and tradition, set in an ancient world。 The assassin’s guild section is the high point of the book, but I also really enjoyed the scene with the Sphinx, the scenes with the mummies, and I wish there was more with the gods。 The naming jokes cracked me up! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Pyramids is about tradition and our own sense of history - how we ourselves view our past and our future, through our religion and culture and family。 Although it almost feels like the first quarter was grafted onto the rest from another plot, it works out。 I do think Pratchett didn’t need to use pseudo Egypt as the setting - it probably would’ve worked just as well and better in some ways if he poked fun if the English, but it was really fun。

It’s a Discworld novel。Really, that’s all you need。 In my opinion, a solidly mid-tier Discworld novel - not Pratchett’s best, certainly, but fun regardless。 The characters are, in my mind, a little forgettable。 The satirical look at mythology is entertaining, all with that signature Pratchett twist on it。 In particular, though, I loved the Riddle of the Sphinx part。 Just excellent。

I buddy read this with my brother as we’re reading all of Discworld together。 I really enjoyed it when Terry Pratchett referenced history and mythology。 I loved seeing that and which elements he would bring in。 My brother liked the math references which apparently weren’t too off。 I like that this explored tradition and innovation and what happens when one is taken to the extreme。 I would never have guessed the ending as I was reading but I liked it。

The fact that this book doesn't have a 5 star rating overall from everyone else is a bit baffling。 This book was the best Discworld book by far, incredibly entertaining and hilarious。 Terry Pratchett does a perfect job satirizing pretty much everything about Dynasties and Tyrannies and religion。 I guess people who were religious would have given it a lower review, as backlash to the challenge of their delusional rituals, trying to block out any doubt and convincing themselves of the strength in The fact that this book doesn't have a 5 star rating overall from everyone else is a bit baffling。 This book was the best Discworld book by far, incredibly entertaining and hilarious。 Terry Pratchett does a perfect job satirizing pretty much everything about Dynasties and Tyrannies and religion。 I guess people who were religious would have given it a lower review, as backlash to the challenge of their delusional rituals, trying to block out any doubt and convincing themselves of the strength in their faith by giving this a bad review。 IMO there are no flaws to this book 。。。more
