Summary

In this sequel to Mythos, legendary author and actor Stephen Fry moves from the exploits of the Olympian gods to the deeds of mortal heroes - Perseus, Jason, Atalanta, Theseus, Heracles。

Rediscover the thrills, grandeur, and unabashed fun of the Greek myths。 Whether recounting a tender love affair or a heroic triumph, Fry deftly finds resonance with our own modern minds and hearts。

Illustrated throughout with classical art inspired by the myths, this gorgeous volume invites you to explore a captivating world with a brilliant storyteller as your guide。

• Each adventure is infused with Fry's distinctive voice and writing style。
• Connoisseurs of the Greek myths will appreciate this fresh-yet-reverential interpretation, while newcomers will feel welcome。
• Retellings brim with humor and emotion。

"Mostly Chiron saw in the child, and the young man he became, boundless courage, athleticism, intelligence, and ambition。 He saw too lots of words beginning with 'self,' which gave him pause。 Self-belief, self-possession, self-righteousness, self-confidence, self-love。 Perhaps these characteristics are as necessary to a hero as courage。"

In Heroes, Fry draws out the humor and pathos in both tender love affairs and heroic battles, and reveals each myth's relevance for our own time。

• A collector's edition filled with classical art inspired by the myths and a luxe, foil-stamped jacket
• Perfect gift for mythology and history buffs, lovers of ancient Greece, art aficionados, and devoted fans of Stephen Fry。

Great read, relaxed style and vivid retelling of the myths。The (partly imposed) timeline that Fry established, really helped structuring the complex conglomerate of Heroes, gods and killings。 Main drawback: often the story feels like and abbreviation, having to navigate between all concerned storylines。

stephen fry is my guardian angel at this point and honestly he would probably have to shove an elderly woman down a flight of stairs for me to say he ever did anything wrong。 and I'd probably inquire about the old lady first。 that's how much i adore him。 this book is a perfect reflection of why i do: witty, funny, to the point, thorough, insightful, and somehow kinda sexy? heroes are fun; not as fun as gods, which is why I'm grateful that i read stephen's mythos before this book; but still fun。 stephen fry is my guardian angel at this point and honestly he would probably have to shove an elderly woman down a flight of stairs for me to say he ever did anything wrong。 and I'd probably inquire about the old lady first。 that's how much i adore him。 this book is a perfect reflection of why i do: witty, funny, to the point, thorough, insightful, and somehow kinda sexy? heroes are fun; not as fun as gods, which is why I'm grateful that i read stephen's mythos before this book; but still fun。 spoiler: everyone in this book is queer and/or a furry。 EVERY。 SINGLE。 ONE。 I can't wait to read his troy now, even though I'll be sad as fuck since there are no more greek mythology books by stephen fry, at least for now。 but this is honestly amazing and a lovely read, i had sooooo much fun。 a must read for anyone who cares about greek mythology for sure~ 。。。more

I didn't enjoy this one as much as Mythos and don't particularly like Heracles or how he portrays Medea and under female characters。 (Love Madeline Miller for her women focused retelling of classics。) Still I love the stories and all put together like this is a pleasure。 I didn't enjoy this one as much as Mythos and don't particularly like Heracles or how he portrays Medea and under female characters。 (Love Madeline Miller for her women focused retelling of classics。) Still I love the stories and all put together like this is a pleasure。 。。。more

Audible audio book。 This was a great follow-up to ‘Mythos’ and it was a pleasure to listen to Strphen Fry storytelling again。 His intelligence, diligence and humour shine through。 Educational and enjoyable。 I can’t wait for the final book!

My third book of April was "Heroes" by Stephen Fry。 Gosh, I just really love this series。 I’ve reviewed the first volume “Mythos” last month, and this one was just as engaging! Gosh, I always knew that the heroes of greek myth were kind a-holes and that we always romanticized the good side of them, but damn。。。 that was worse than I expected。I will certainly look at Heracles with completely different eyes from now on。But really great book, enjoyed every story

I've always loved Greek & Roman mythology so this was such a fun read。 Stephen has such a witty way of presenting the stories in his own voice that makes them so much more fun than the more dry tales in the books of my childhood。 I've always loved Greek & Roman mythology so this was such a fun read。 Stephen has such a witty way of presenting the stories in his own voice that makes them so much more fun than the more dry tales in the books of my childhood。 。。。more

(Audiobook) When an author like Stephen Fry narrates his own work, you have to pay attention and take it all in。 Such is the case with the series he put together on the Greek Myths。 This work focuses on the great Greek heroes, from their divine origins to the various tales of glory, tragedy and action that came to define the Greek culture and influence much of the modern world。 Fry does a great job in bringing many of these well known tales to life, in some cases enhancing and in others, bringin (Audiobook) When an author like Stephen Fry narrates his own work, you have to pay attention and take it all in。 Such is the case with the series he put together on the Greek Myths。 This work focuses on the great Greek heroes, from their divine origins to the various tales of glory, tragedy and action that came to define the Greek culture and influence much of the modern world。 Fry does a great job in bringing many of these well known tales to life, in some cases enhancing and in others, bringing out previously untold tales。 That his narration incorporates modern mythology and figures (Star Wars and pro-wrestling come to mind) is just a major bonus。 If this was just the hard-copy/e-copy, I would rate about 4-4。5, but the audiobook is so much more fulfilling with his narration。 Ultimately, you can't go wrong with this work。 Is it necessarily better than Mythos? I am not so sure。 However, I was never as engaged with the demi-god heroes as I was with the actual gods, but this work made their tales that much more engaging, so I will rate this a little higher than Mythos, which is still quite good。 Guess I am going to have to listen to the third book in the series when that comes out。 。。。more

It's always nice to read about ancient Greece myths and legends, but this time Fry really tries too hard to be witty and humorous, especially in the first part, and the result is the opposite most of the times, as it usually happens when you try too hard。 I definitely preferred "Mythos", but all in all it was a nice reading nonetheless。 It's always nice to read about ancient Greece myths and legends, but this time Fry really tries too hard to be witty and humorous, especially in the first part, and the result is the opposite most of the times, as it usually happens when you try too hard。 I definitely preferred "Mythos", but all in all it was a nice reading nonetheless。 。。。more

A brilliant storytelling of ancient heroes, ranging from Hercules to Theseus, all wrapped in a golden fleece of humour, beautifully woven by Fry。Fry delves into the lives and stories of the Greek heroes: their backstories, their journeys and that they eventually become。Definitely would recommend for ages 13+ with parents approval, as it discusses mature content。

Fry is a masterful story teller。 His narration tells the stories of the Greeks while retaining the lyrical rhythm of their original orators。 It’s easy to forget that these tales of hubris, of triumph and trial were around long before written language。 We take for granted how lucky we are to have the collected capital of these original tales of adventure。

What a thorough and entertaining volume of the Greek Heroes! Fry's is a gripping read, even if you've read dozens of other versions of these timeless tales。 He makes the characters come alive。 What a thorough and entertaining volume of the Greek Heroes! I really didn’t get on with this。 Incredibly difficult to follow as far too many characters with complex relationships。 Fry works hard to combat this with extensive footnotes and explanation, but this actually just makes it more difficult to follow。 Unfortunately this for me was way too large a scope and would have been more enjoyable if only three or four stories were focused on instead。

3 - 3。5*Very entertaining, though I found it less fun than Mythos。 The overarching moral of heroic tales seems to be: don't be a hero, you'll die tragically and alone。 Also, don't be a woman。CW: rape and suicide are very common in greek myths。 3 - 3。5*Very entertaining, though I found it less fun than Mythos。 The overarching moral of heroic tales seems to be: don't be a hero, you'll die tragically and alone。 Also, don't be a woman。CW: rape and suicide are very common in greek myths。 。。。more

Following Mythos, Heroes is another spectacularly funny and extraordinarily captivating retelling of ancient greek myths and stories。 Here Stephen Fry, with his unmistakable wittiness, narrates the feats and foes of Perseus, Hercules, Atalanta, Oedipus, Orpheus, Theseus and other great heroes of ancient times which fought to rid the world from the primitive chthonic monsters。 I chose to listen to Heroes as an audiobook, performed by the author himself who I also adore as an actor, and just as wi Following Mythos, Heroes is another spectacularly funny and extraordinarily captivating retelling of ancient greek myths and stories。 Here Stephen Fry, with his unmistakable wittiness, narrates the feats and foes of Perseus, Hercules, Atalanta, Oedipus, Orpheus, Theseus and other great heroes of ancient times which fought to rid the world from the primitive chthonic monsters。 I chose to listen to Heroes as an audiobook, performed by the author himself who I also adore as an actor, and just as with Mythos the experience was completely engaging。 I love the way Fry spins the threads of these stories, reshaping the ways of the ancient oral tradition, and enriching them with anecdotes and personal reflections。 These are at times so articulate that one can only imagine the immense work and study of the classics which has been behind these books。 The story lines and genealogy of most the characters intertwine in complex patterns and it is almost impossible to follow each and every one of them precisely; however, I would like to make two comments in this regard: firstly, this is not a history book, you don't have to remember all the names names and who is related to whom, it is a book of stories and as such should simply be enjoyed for the sake of it; secondly, if at times the bsckstories of the characters might seem too long and complicated, in the words of the author himself, "it is very juicy backstory"。I didn't give this book 5 stars just because, for reasons that have everything to do with my personal tastes and little to do with literature, I think I slightly preferred Mythos, with its tales of the origins of chaos, the world and creation。 Stephen Fry once again proves to be a brilliant storyteller and I look forward to listening to his next audiobook, Troy! 。。。more

I’m a big fan of Greek mythology in general。 I like Stephen Fry’s narration and really enjoyed reading Heroes after his Mythos。 Troy is next! The only thing I would change about my experience with this book is that I wish I read a hard copy version of it。 I read it on the kindle and I did not take advantage of all the notes at the end of each chapter because it was finicky。 I had a hard time keeping track of all the names。 Wish my library had a hard copy!
