Summary

Absolutely brilliant retelling of the Greek myths。Great as a beginner and introduction to the Greeks, their myths and the way they thought the world worked。Introduces lots of concepts and etymologies from which the Greeks created words, the Romans remixed for their own myths and ideas within society and stories today。Read the physical book and listened to the audio book which is read by Stephen Fry himself which makes it even better。I now feel equipped to try out some of the modern retelling of Absolutely brilliant retelling of the Greek myths。Great as a beginner and introduction to the Greeks, their myths and the way they thought the world worked。Introduces lots of concepts and etymologies from which the Greeks created words, the Romans remixed for their own myths and ideas within society and stories today。Read the physical book and listened to the audio book which is read by Stephen Fry himself which makes it even better。I now feel equipped to try out some of the modern retelling of Greek myths and some of the original tellings of myths。I would love to be able to read a book on myths of the world to compare the ideas of the Greeks with other cultures and communities and how they have translated into the modern world in all the separate societies that now exist。 。。。more

Started slow, got better with the longer stories and then felt arduous。 I listened to the audio version - perhaps reading it would have been better for me。 But I felt it was far too long, quite quickly I lost track of who was who and the connections between them and then everything felt repetitive。 Perhaps the Greek myths are like that but there must be a way of retelling them in a more engaging way。 Or actually maybe just selecting fewer myths and therefore avoiding the feeling of repetition wo Started slow, got better with the longer stories and then felt arduous。 I listened to the audio version - perhaps reading it would have been better for me。 But I felt it was far too long, quite quickly I lost track of who was who and the connections between them and then everything felt repetitive。 Perhaps the Greek myths are like that but there must be a way of retelling them in a more engaging way。 Or actually maybe just selecting fewer myths and therefore avoiding the feeling of repetition would have done it。 。。。more

I loved going through this book slowly。 Though I already knew a version of most of the myths it’s always fun to read a fresh retelling。

A fun and interesting way to hear about the Greek myths and legends。 Told with a modern twist and view point, I really enjoyed hearing some familiar stories but lots of new ones and how the names and characters relate to our modern languages。

Stephen Fry retells some of the most famous stories of Greek mythology in a way that makes it easier for modern audiences to follow。 And, obviously, he did so with his own fantastic sense of humour。 Because this is still basically a retelling, there's nothing very new or surprising about the book (unless, maybe, if you've never read anything about Greek myths before)。 But Fry's comments in the footnotes made this worth reading。 They're hilarious! A must-read for any lovers of Greek mythology。 This book is unlike any book on Greek mythology I have ever read。 The writing style is engaging and keeps it interesting。 All the important things are mentioned and then the author also goes into the details。 Although this is a book for adults, I had no trouble reading it。 This is definitely one of the most special and unique books on history that I have ever read。

What a fun way to read the Greek myths, plus who doesn't love Stephen Fry's humor?! I am looking forward to the other books in the series。 What a fun way to read the Greek myths, plus who doesn't love Stephen Fry's humor?! I am looking forward to the other books in the series。 。。。more

Breezy read。 Highly informative and funny at times。 A nice starter course for Greek mythology。

Essential reading for anyone who loves classical myths。 Fry tries a chronological retelling of Greek myth with humour。 An entertaining read!

This was a fun and witty retelling of some classic and some more obscure Greek myths, grounded in the present with some exploration of the way these characters and stories have influenced the arts, sciences, and language we use today。

I liked hearing it read by the author

I loved it。 My daughter and I went on a road trip and I was half way through when she started loving it。 It was an amazing bonding time because this little none year old was telling me about the stars, moons, and planets these characters were。 It was a wonderful moment。

I've read many books on Greek mythology and I found them very entertaining because they were just stories。 This book instead felt like a chore。 I love to watch Stephen Fry act and I like his voice but this book。。。 he made it a bit daunting to get through with all of his commentaries that much of them he didn't needed to state。 Had he just read they stories like the fairy tales they are suppose to be they would have been more enjoyable but instead it came off more like a lecture and commentaries I've read many books on Greek mythology and I found them very entertaining because they were just stories。 This book instead felt like a chore。 I love to watch Stephen Fry act and I like his voice but this book。。。 he made it a bit daunting to get through with all of his commentaries that much of them he didn't needed to state。 Had he just read they stories like the fairy tales they are suppose to be they would have been more enjoyable but instead it came off more like a lecture and commentaries that helped to drag the stories。At the end of the book he makes states to the fact that it isn't meant to be a lecture or something to that fact and yet that is exactly what it felt like frequently。 I've already listen to a lecture from a professor on Greek mythology and that was more enjoyable because I was under the understanding that it was in fact a lecture。 Where as Mythos sells as a collection of stories and yet it was more than that。 Not what I was looking for and so of course it made me less enthused to listen to this book every day。 It took me months to get through it and listening to here and there to finally get through this book。 It is no wonder one of the ladies in my book group felt it overwhelming and confusing of information and almost gave up。 And she actually was reading the book instead of listening to the audiobook like I was and much of the time I tuned out what Stephen Fry was saying because it was just a bunch of commentary on a story。 I just wanted to listen to the mythology stories without explanations or personal thoughts。 So for me this book was just Okay。 。。。more

I had been meaning to read this for ages and just hadn't gotten round to picking the book up。 I then seen they had the audiobook through the library app and decided to read that way。 What a treat。 All the drama and excitement of the Greek Myths but narrated by the author himself。 I could listen to Stephen Fry talk all day, and nearly did as it was about 15 hours long, but so worth it I had been meaning to read this for ages and just hadn't gotten round to picking the book up。 I then seen they had the audiobook through the library app and decided to read that way。 What a treat。 All the drama and excitement of the Greek Myths but narrated by the author himself。 I could listen to Stephen Fry talk all day, and nearly did as it was about 15 hours long, but so worth it 。。。more

A fabulous retelling of some of the major Greek myths with the author ‘s typical wry humor。 Usually I have a hard time with audiobooks but this one definitely Is best experienced in Stephen Fry’s voice。

Fry used the most relatable logic and language to retell 3 millennia old stories。 Somehow the illogical storyline I was used to made sense, I found my favorite goddesses and gods。 What a fantastic read!

8/5 stars! Loooove it! <3Me and my sister approved!I own the hardcover version。 I usually prefer softcover books because it’s lighter to carry, but this is the only hardcover book i don’t regret to have。 Its cover is so pretty and it has so many beautiful pictures arranged prettily。 I feel like reading while walking at art gallery。Stephen Fry proves himself as a multifaceted actor。 His writing deserves praises! As Greek Myth itself is already complex and absurd, Stephen Fry rewrote it in a form o 8/5 stars!
