Summary

Take the guesswork (and fear) out of fasting with real-life and expert advice about the number-one diet trend。

Over the last decade, intermittent fasting—restricting calorie intake for a proscribed number of hours for a set number of days—has become increasingly popular。 While some in the medical community initially dismissed the idea as a dangerous fad, in recent years researchers have validated the safety of fasting for weight loss, and found compelling evidence that it offers wide-ranging health benefits, including lowering blood pressure; reducing risk factors for diabetes, cancer, and other diseases; promoting longevity; and increasing cognitive function。

However, many people aren’t sure how to incorporate fasting into their daily routine。 What are best practices? Do you need to fast every day? What do you eat on non-fasting days? How can you fast when your family doesn’t? What if you’re a person who gets hungry after not eating for a few hours?

In this essential guide, Dr。 Jason Fung, Megan Ramos, and Eve Mayer address common questions and offer practical advice for integrating beneficial periods of food restriction into daily life。 They set three initial goals: Start Your Fasting Engine, Find Your Fasting Lane, and Win the Race。 Each goal is broken down into ten manageable steps that can be taken at your individual pace。 Love breakfast? Then it may take a little while to get used to not eating it。 Already skip it? Jump ahead to restricting lunch。 Fung, Ramos, and Mayer know every person’s physiological and psychological response to food restriction is different, and they’re here to help you find the tools and strategies that will work best for your life。

Combining Mayer and Ramos’ years of personal experience with Dr。 Fung’s clinical experience and scientific rigor, Life in the Fasting Lane is a unique, accessible, and life-changing guide to developing a sustainable and beneficial fasting routine。

I enjoyed this book。 It was a little too focused on low card, but a quick, easy, and inspiring read on my IF journey。

This is a fabulous and accessible book about fasting for the average person that doesn't want a bunch of science thrown at them。 Instead, they offer relatable perspectives and experiences as they lay out the basics of the why and how of fasting for us mere mortals。 I would probably choose this book to give to friends and family over any other fasting-focused book out there right now。 This is a fabulous and accessible book about fasting for the average person that doesn't want a bunch of science thrown at them。 Instead, they offer relatable perspectives and experiences as they lay out the basics of the why and how of fasting for us mere mortals。 I would probably choose this book to give to friends and family over any other fasting-focused book out there right now。 。。。more

After watching a you tube video of Dr Jason Fung I was curious about fasting。 I ordered the book immediately and found that he made a lot of sense。 My eye doctor had lost a lot of weight in a year and he said that he used this technique。 Since I too need to lose weight and have trie most everything I decided to check him out。 This book was a fast read and very informational。 My husband and I are going to start with baby steps and work into fasting。

I hate to say it but this is a terrible book and incredibly misleading in terms of nutrition and diet。 It always amazes me the lengths people will go to to create diets that will allow them to continue to eat the garbage food that got them sick in the first place。 This book, for 240 pages tries to convince readers that fasting is the end-all-be-all and they can continue to eat the low quality, crap foods that are getting millions upon millions of Americans sick on a daily basis。Eat an entire piz I hate to say it but this is a terrible book and incredibly misleading in terms of nutrition and diet。 It always amazes me the lengths people will go to to create diets that will allow them to continue to eat the garbage food that got them sick in the first place。 This book, for 240 pages tries to convince readers that fasting is the end-all-be-all and they can continue to eat the low quality, crap foods that are getting millions upon millions of Americans sick on a daily basis。Eat an entire pizza to yourself? Just fast! Sneak some sugary doughnuts? Just fast! Want to eat bacon and red meat? Just fast! They do get a couple things right in that they recommend avoiding processed foods and eating whole foods。 And I also do agree with certain types of fasting。 However, the negligence of eating plant based and describing bacon and red meat as their personal "feel good" foods is shocking。 If you want to read a REAL nutrition based book that'll help your health and change your life then you should be diving in to the likes of T Colin Campbell, Micheal Greger, Neil Barnard or William M Li。(I just want to make a note that I do understand Jason Fung is a very successful doctor and author and these comments I have made here are not a reflection of his previous books (Obesity Code, Diabetes Code), these comments are strictly about this book in which I find he barely takes much part in anyway)。 。。。more

It is a good read but by and large it reiterates the over all ideology of Dr Fung。 Presentation is new with some real life stories and experiences of other two authors but if you have read the obesity code or other books from Dr Fung you will find this interesting but not much new stuff。

I listened to the audio book。 The 14:10 is certainly doable, especially if you are only looking to lose a few pounds。 The 3 days a week fast is too extreme in my opinion 。The author who had 3 bariatric surgeries and still struggled may need psycho therapy more than fasting。 Interesting to learn about this current trend in eating anyway。

Great book。 Highly recommend it。The three perspectives were very helpful。 All three explained their experiences very well。 Their honesty was much appreciated。 Thank you。

This book blew my mind。 Basically, most of what I believed about weight loss has been a bunch of nonsense, and I've suffered needlessly trying to lose weight (if you ever tried counting calories, sticking to low-fat diets, and doing sports in order to lose weight, you suffered needlessly too)。 You won't stay thin using these methods, our bodies don't work this way。 Also, weight loss doesn't have to be as difficult as we have been taught to believe。Intermittent fasting + keto 🚀 This book blew my mind。 Basically, most of what I believed about weight loss has been a bunch of nonsense, and I've suffered needlessly trying to lose weight (if you ever tried counting calories, sticking to low-fat diets, and doing sports in order to lose weight, you suffered needlessly too)。 You won't stay thin using these methods, our bodies don't work this way。 Also, weight loss doesn't have to be as difficult as we have been taught to believe。Intermittent fasting + keto 🚀 。。。more

I thought I wouldn’t like this book, since I typically prefer deep explanations of metabolic mechanisms and lots of scientific citations (more like what’s in The Obesity Code)。 But I found that after the first few chapters I started to appreciate the the lay-friendly descriptions and personal anecdotes。

3。5 stars。 Way too much emphasis on 24-48 hour fasts, not enough on the benefits of and science behind 20-22 hour fasts, which works better for me。 Still, the book had some great motivation and advice。

I'd read The Obesity Code by Dr。 Jason Fung, so wanted more info on IF。 It was a quick read to gather a few more nuggets of wisdom。 I'd read The Obesity Code by Dr。 Jason Fung, so wanted more info on IF。 It was a quick read to gather a few more nuggets of wisdom。 。。。more

Once you actually meet your goals and achieve healthier eating, is the extended necessary? I feel like i left with more questions than answers。 。。。more

I'm a DIY intermittent faster for going on 2 years now。 Along with other lifestyle changes, it has definitely helped me lose 10 pounds that I'd been hanging on to for more than a decade。 I'd often wondered if I was "doing it right," especially since it would be a good thing to lose 5 or 10 more, and since I am a reader, this is the resource I found (as opposed to a blog, podcast or social media group)。I rated this book 4 stars。 Several reviewers strongly prefer Dr。 Fung's Obesity Code, which I d I'm a DIY intermittent faster for going on 2 years now。 Along with other lifestyle changes, it has definitely helped me lose 10 pounds that I'd been hanging on to for more than a decade。 I'd often wondered if I was "doing it right," especially since it would be a good thing to lose 5 or 10 more, and since I am a reader, this is the resource I found (as opposed to a blog, podcast or social media group)。I rated this book 4 stars。 Several reviewers strongly prefer Dr。 Fung's Obesity Code, which I didn't read but you may want to consider as an alternate resource on this topic。This book had an unusual structure, with three authors of most chapters。 One author, a highly respected social media influencer, begins each chapter by sharing a piece of her personal journey with fasting。 The other two, an MD and I think a certified nutritionist, add their professional perspective。 My guess is The Obesity Code is simply the more direct medical approach。 While I didn't relate to author one's journey, it was a compelling story and I didn't find it to be a distraction from what I hoped to learn。Bottom line, Life in the Fasting Lane met my objective of providing me with a more educated approach to intermittent fasting,  which I am optimistic will support me in achieving my goals。  。。。more

Hitting menopause during the COVID quarantine doesn't do a lot for a girl's figure。 I tried an informal and successful experiment with intermittent fasting several months before the quarantine but did a lot of 'boredom/stress/the world has gone nuts' eating during。 I decided it was time to learn a bit of the science behind fasting and this book was very helpful。 The book is co-written by three different authors: a physician, a clinical researcher, and a person who needed to lose weight。 I liked Hitting menopause during the COVID quarantine doesn't do a lot for a girl's figure。 I tried an informal and successful experiment with intermittent fasting several months before the quarantine but did a lot of 'boredom/stress/the world has gone nuts' eating during。 I decided it was time to learn a bit of the science behind fasting and this book was very helpful。 The book is co-written by three different authors: a physician, a clinical researcher, and a person who needed to lose weight。 I liked the approach of the book and the many options that it explained。 The book included, of course, the medical aspects behind intermittent fasting, but I personally found the anecdotes and scenarios most helpful。 I'm certain intermittent fasting is not for everyone, but this is a good book for those who want to give it a go。 。。。more

More personal perspectives on the material from the Obesity Code - less science and more opinion albeit from a journalist and a nutritionist。 This book makes the case for intermittent fasting to reset insulin levels and all the other hormones related to eating and obesity。 The patient population that Dr。 Fung treats are pretty sick with kidney diseases, and some of the extreme fasting discussed in this book may be appropriate for them but overboard for the general population。

Sherry

I really can’t rate this kind of book。I found it easy to read and a practical start for anyone thinking about fasting as a way to improve health and specifically insulin resistance。 It is a quicker read than The Obesity Code and not as annoying as the 8 Hour Diet。 Of course it doesn’t provide the breadth of research that The Obesity Code did, but it will give anyone curious about finding out the benefits of fasting a quick summary and some pointers on how to get started。

One of the better books available on how fasting can be used for weight loss and overall health。 Particularly useful at explaining the connection between weight gain and the hormone, insulin。 Describes how type 2 diabetes (and pre-diabetes) can be reversed by proper use of fasting。 Dispels common myths such as "it's better to eat many small meals during the day in order to keep up your metabolism" or "weight loss is just a matter of controlling intake and exercising", etc。 Notes how fasts have b One of the better books available on how fasting can be used for weight loss and overall health。 Particularly useful at explaining the connection between weight gain and the hormone, insulin。 Describes how type 2 diabetes (and pre-diabetes) can be reversed by proper use of fasting。 Dispels common myths such as "it's better to eat many small meals during the day in order to keep up your metabolism" or "weight loss is just a matter of controlling intake and exercising", etc。 Notes how fasts have been used for thousands of years, and are still practiced today by many religions and cultures, to maintain overall health and mental state。 I found this book to be helpful and different from the countless books found in the diet section of your book store。 。。。more

I borrowed this audio copy from the e-library on Libby。 I have had a lot of fun listening to this book。 Even though it is non-fiction, I found it hugely entertaining。The narrators, Brian Nishii, Courtney Patterson, Piper Goodeve, had me fooled as I truly thought they were the authors。 Their voices were energetic and friendly。 I have heard Doctor Jason Fung on YouTubes。 By the way, look him up; fascinating and informative videos。 The three authors give you different views of Intermittent Fasting。 I borrowed this audio copy from the e-library on Libby。 I have had a lot of fun listening to this book。 Even though it is non-fiction, I found it hugely entertaining。The narrators, Brian Nishii, Courtney Patterson, Piper Goodeve, had me fooled as I truly thought they were the authors。 Their voices were energetic and friendly。 I have heard Doctor Jason Fung on YouTubes。 By the way, look him up; fascinating and informative videos。 The three authors give you different views of Intermittent Fasting。 The Doctor gives scientific, medical information。 Megan Ramos gives the advice she gives to her clients, and Eve Mayer talks about her weight loss journey。 I like having the book broke up that way。 It's nice not getting overwhelmed by the medical data, or too much advice told in one spot, or too much of a person's journey without knowing the science of why certain things happened。 Okay, maybe I didn't explain this well enough。 This might show how much I enjoyed this audiobook。 I plan to buy this so I can revisit it from time to time。 Glad I got to borrow it from the library first。 。。。more

This is the second book I’ve read on fasting, it was informative and I learned new and different things。 I liked both books, what I specifically liked better about this book is the input from three sources: a long-time patient and dieter, a medical lab researcher, and Dr。 Fung a nephrologist—or kidney disease specialist and the approach they took on fasting from a diabetes angle。 This book also effectively shot down the “calories in, calories out” approach to weight loss and explained that hormo This is the second book I’ve read on fasting, it was informative and I learned new and different things。 I liked both books, what I specifically liked better about this book is the input from three sources: a long-time patient and dieter, a medical lab researcher, and Dr。 Fung a nephrologist—or kidney disease specialist and the approach they took on fasting from a diabetes angle。 This book also effectively shot down the “calories in, calories out” approach to weight loss and explained that hormones have more to do with weight loss。 They discussed and explained insulin and it’s effect on the body and the body’s need to take a break from constant insulin secretion。 It dispels false ideas about fasting including the false idea that fasting will decrease metabolism, etc。 This quote is a good explanation of fasting: “If I could sum up fasting in one sentence, I would say this: fasting regulates your hormones。 It’s more than a diet; it resets your body’s internal controls, allowing it to burn the right amount of energy to keep you alive。” (page 12) 。。。more

A good, quick intro on the topic of fasting for health。 Although it was lighter on the science, it is very encouraging and has lots of practical tips for incorporating fasting into your life。
