This is on the Torchlight curriculum -- we don't homeschool, but I'm one of those weirdos who browses curricula booklists just to see what's out there。 Sometimes, I find a gem, and this is one of those times。 And, yes, I borrowed it (via Libby) based solely on the cover。 It looks fun, we can try it for free, why not? It was listed under Science, but we aren't doing lessons so who cares? Surprisingly, this book about dragons and marshmallows is actually a decent little scientific method book。 How does one go about diagnosing a sick dragon? Zoey has to do some research (into reptiles), and some experiments, and noodle on the results。 She writes out her plan, and she knows about the importance of control, etc etc。 All of this is woven into the narrative。 Built into the story is some Nature info as well -- what is warm-blooded/ cold-blooded? What do reptiles eat? These aren't delivered via callouts or end notes, but via Zoey's thoughts about her previous experiences with animals。 From this recalled Nature info, she extrapolates possibilities and devises her experiments。 The only thing I don't love is Dad being a character who can't understand because he can't see magical creatures。 Although, to be fair, he is written pretty well for this situation。 How to deal when your kiddo only wants to tell your co-parent whatever the problem is, because they are sure you won't understand? I feel like Zoey's dad is a solid model for us adults。 So, yeah。 A book about science that is also about magical creatures shouldn't work, but it does! Is it suitable for proper lessons, a la Torchlight? I'm on the fence about that。。。 so I'll encourage you to preread and decide for yourself。 It's brief, less than two hours for a grown up。 N。B。 Torchlight recs this for read aloud a couple years younger than our son (8yo)。 He's already learned the Nature content, and once said (with grest impatience) "I know all this already, Mom!" -- but he was totally engaged by the story, and I still like the scientific method part。 We both enjoyed it enough to try the next one。 。。。more

I read this with my 9yo and she’s probably too advanced for it but she loved it anyway and I thought it was fine too。 I do enjoy a book where the kids are smart and independent but NOT as the result of adults being assholes (they’re great)。 This isn’t genius kids lit but it’s solid and she’ll prob read the whole series。

5 year old approved! This book was super cute and perfect for a read aloud bedtime book。 There was good suspense that has us wanting to keep reading at the end of each chapter。 My daughter loved that there's a cat and dragon that play together and become best friends。 Very cute characters and cute story idea。 We can't wait to read more of the series! 5 year old approved! I read this one out loud to my 5yo and we both really enjoyed it。 I love the blend of fantasy and scientific method, and Zoe is a super cute and spunky character with a big heart。 We definitely will continue this series!

These are great! I appreciate the recommendation! Cute kid, cute cat, learn about science, and magical creatures to boot! Who couldn't like a book about a baby dragon named Marshmallow? 4。5yo and I both enjoyed this one。 These are great! I appreciate the recommendation! 3。5 stars。 Love the concept of using science to understand/help magical creatures; a great way to get my fancy princess to think like a scientist!

I think I'm gonna like going through this series with my daughters。 The first one has a fun mix of magical creatures and the scientific method。 It's definitely a "come for the dragons, stay for the learning" type of thing。 Or is it the other way around? Either way, we'll be checking out book 2 soon。 I think I'm gonna like going through this series with my daughters。 The first one has a fun mix of magical creatures and the scientific method。 It's definitely a "come for the dragons, stay for the learning" type of thing。 Or is it the other way around? Simple and relatable for J。 The book contains magical creatures, but no magic。 The story illustrates endurance and trial and error。 As well as a healthy need for parental guidance。 We will read others in the series。

Little heavy handed in the educational aspect but I suppose that’s the point。 It think it’s dressed up enough for kids to enjoy。 I did like the diversity of the characters and how they got along as a family。

This is really cute。 Is it science, or fantasy? A little of both! Zoey uses the scientific method to doctor the magical creatures。 Incredibly, there are two parents。 Alas, the dad is a lackluster, unmagical daemon (def: operating in the background)。 But what more can we expect in 2021? (Am I getting too cynical? Sigh。)

Ricki

Cute fantasy that reminds me of Bruce Coville books but for a new (and younger) era。

My daughter (starting at age 5?) LOVES this series and so do I。 Great mix of science and magic, lovable funny characters, complicated situations where Zoey has to do hard things (but not so hard it is traumatic to read)。 I was surprised I just stumbled across the series, I feel like it should be wildly famous。

This was a fun little book about magic and perseverance。 Zoey is a likeable character from the very beginning, as is her cat, Sassafras (great name, by the way)。 My kids loved it!

This book was fine, it is definitely for younger readers (I should have read this to my son when he was three or four)。 At seven he liked it, but he wasn't dying to read it or anything。 I did like that it talked about the scientific process, and who wouldn't want to care for a sweet baby dragon? Dragons and Marshmallows is a cute story about a young girl named Zoey who can see magical creatures。 She inherited this gift from her mom。 When her mom leaves for a business trip, Zoey is tasked with taking care of any sick, magical beings that drop by her home (this is normally Zoey's mom's job)。 A very ill dragon is discovered, and Zoey has to figure out how to treat the tiny creature before it dies。 My youngest daughter liked the story okay, but she wasn't fully engaged during all of our rea Dragons and Marshmallows is a cute story about a young girl named Zoey who can see magical creatures。 She inherited this gift from her mom。 When her mom leaves for a business trip, Zoey is tasked with taking care of any sick, magical beings that drop by her home (this is normally Zoey's mom's job)。 A very ill dragon is discovered, and Zoey has to figure out how to treat the tiny creature before it dies。 My youngest daughter liked the story okay, but she wasn't fully engaged during all of our reading sessions。 Some parts of the book were more interesting to her than others。 Her favorite parts of the book are the illustrations and anytime there was suspense。 My favorite parts were when science was introduced, because Zoey closely follows the scientific process when she works to figure out what ailment the dragon suffers from。 Many young readers will enjoy this one, and won't only be entertained, but they will also learn at the same time。 In addition, the protagonist is a little black girl, which is a major plus given the fact that many books don't offer protagonists of color。 Also, the book is short with writing that is not overwhelming for beginning readers。 First graders will likely be able to read this on on their own。 Readers who really like it, will be delighted because it's a series! 。。。more

My five year old loves reading this at bed time。 It’s one of those books that she liked so much that she would ask to go to bed so that we could read it。

This was really fun and will appeal to kids who like animal rescue stories。 I loved how Zoey was understandably scared but had to face her fears, be strong, and make decisions independently of her parents。 There's a lot of science and scientific thinking involved as well。 The illustrations are super cute。 I get why this series is so popular at my library。 This was really fun and will appeal to kids who like animal rescue stories。 I loved how Zoey was understandably scared but had to face her fears, be strong, and make decisions independently of her parents。 There's a lot of science and scientific thinking involved as well。 The illustrations are super cute。 I get why this series is so popular at my library。 。。。more

My seven-year-old daughter and I read this together for a school-wide reading program, and we both adored it。 The Zoey and Sassafras series is now, I think, up to about ten books。 "Dragons and Marshmallows" is the first in the series。The hero is a little girl named Zoey who, with her cat Sassafras, help magical creatures that live in the forest in her backyard。 Only she and her mom can see them。 It is their special "superpower"。Zoey loves science, and she is always conducting experiments to figu My seven-year-old daughter and I read this together for a school-wide reading program, and we both adored it。 The Zoey and Sassafras series is now, I think, up to about ten books。 "Dragons and Marshmallows" is the first in the series。The hero is a little girl named Zoey who, with her cat Sassafras, help magical creatures that live in the forest in her backyard。 Only she and her mom can see them。 It is their special "superpower"。Zoey loves science, and she is always conducting experiments to figure out how to help the magical creatures。 In this one, she conducts a food experiment to determine if the dragon is a carnivore, an herbivore, or an omnivore。 This is a great series combining fantasy and science。 My daughter and I are already mid-way through the second book。 。。。more

The kids and I loved this short and sweet book。 I loved how scientific methods and principles were naturally woven into the story。 My kids are all dying to read the next ones now!

I have not read this book but it seems like a great transition chapter book with a fun and engaging storyline and it looks like it has great representation as well!

I like this book thank you

Such a cute chapter book series! These books involve so many fun animals and ideas that will definitely keep any kid entertained。 I also love this series because the main character is a person of color。 Also with the popularity of STEAM rising these books involve a lot of that。

Kristin

I was surprised by this one。 The integration of science, along with a female main character of color was my draw。 It turned out to be so much more! The balance of science and magic was charming。 I particularly loved how this book was such an accessible introduction to the elements of fantasy。 I would just love to read this book aloud to first or second graders!!

F&P Level N。 Cute chapter book about scientific method。
