Written eloquently， but very euro-centric and not a very modern view point， but seeing as it was written by a white male quite a while ago I kind of expected it。 Nonetheless， it contained some interesting insights into historic figures and events。

I’m going into my sophomore year of high school and this was required as summer reading for AP World History， so going into this book my expectations were on about the same level as every other mediocre book that was required for a class。 However， by the time that I actually started reading and annotating the book， I couldn’t put it down。 Although nonfiction isn’t typically what I like to read， A Little History tells the story of world history from cavemen times up until the end of World War 2。 I’m going into my sophomore year of high school and this was required as summer reading for AP World History， so going into this book my expectations were on about the same level as every other mediocre book that was required for a class。 However， by the time that I actually started reading and annotating the book， I couldn’t put it down。 Although nonfiction isn’t typically what I like to read， A Little History tells the story of world history from cavemen times up until the end of World War 2。 The pacing of this book can sometimes be a bit too fast to keep up with completely， but it was necessary to squeeze it all into under 300 pages。 I recommend this book to everyone， regardless of your previous knowledge of world history because reading this was a truly captivating and interesting experience that was greatly enjoyable。 。。。more

I always loathed history at school - with thousands of years to choose from， why was there such a narrow focus on Henry VIII， Oliver Cromwell， and Archduke Franz Ferdinand？ It's refreshing to read a book that has less than a chapter spent on the Church of England， and where the World Wars are treated briefly for what they were: a magnified but depressingly consistent continuation of human endeavour。It's written to be readable by kids， which makes for a nice change of pace on a lazy Sunday aftern I always loathed history at school - with thousands of years to choose from， why was there such a narrow focus on Henry VIII， Oliver Cromwell， and Archduke Franz Ferdinand？ It's refreshing to read a book that has less than a chapter spent on the Church of England， and where the World Wars are treated briefly for what they were: a magnified but depressingly consistent continuation of human endeavour。It's written to be readable by kids， which makes for a nice change of pace on a lazy Sunday afternoon。 This book shows it's totally possible to explain complex topics with simple language。 Why can't we do more of this？ 。。。more

This might be one of my favorite children's history that I have recently read。 I will consider buying a physical copy of this book to one day read to my own children。 The story is easy to follow but entertaining to read。 Even as someone who has read a fair few history books before， the events of history were explained in such a way that it is still from a new perspective。 Because this book was published just after the second world war， it was interesting to see what was important to people befor This might be one of my favorite children's history that I have recently read。 I will consider buying a physical copy of this book to one day read to my own children。 The story is easy to follow but entertaining to read。 Even as someone who has read a fair few history books before， the events of history were explained in such a way that it is still from a new perspective。 Because this book was published just after the second world war， it was interesting to see what was important to people before the Cold War and the space race or the war on terror。 。。。more

بالاخره بعد از مدتی طولانی این کتاب تمام شد！ مشکل من با خواندن کتاب‌های نظری این است که حس می‌کنم باید همه مطالب یادم بماند و خب طبعا یادم نمی‌ماند و مدام برمی‌گردم از اول می‌خوانم。 درمورد چند فصل اول این کتاب هم همین‌طور بود تا اینکه بر این وسواس غلبه کردم و جلو رفتم。 فصل‌های اول کتاب را چندان دوست نداشتم مخصوصا لحن نویسنده که مدام خواننده را خطاب قرار می‌داد。 با جلوتر رفتن کتاب برایم جذاب شد به‌خصوص ماجرای جنگ‌های هانیبال که فقط در کتاب محبوب نوجوانی‌ام «بابالنگ دراز» ذکری از آن شده بود。 بخش‌ه بالاخره بعد از مدتی طولانی این کتاب تمام شد！ مشکل من با خواندن کتاب‌های نظری این است که حس می‌کنم باید همه مطالب یادم بماند و خب طبعا یادم نمی‌ماند و مدام برمی‌گردم از اول می‌خوانم。 درمورد چند فصل اول این کتاب هم همین‌طور بود تا اینکه بر این وسواس غلبه کردم و جلو رفتم。 فصل‌های اول کتاب را چندان دوست نداشتم مخصوصا لحن نویسنده که مدام خواننده را خطاب قرار می‌داد。 با جلوتر رفتن کتاب برایم جذاب شد به‌خصوص ماجرای جنگ‌های هانیبال که فقط در کتاب محبوب نوجوانی‌ام «بابالنگ دراز» ذکری از آن شده بود。 بخش‌های پایانی مخصوصا کمی قبل از جنگ جهانی اول و بعد از جنگ در کتاب‌های درسی بود و صرفا شبیه مرور بود。 به نظرم کتاب دو ضعف داشت: یکی اینکه محور کتاب اروپا بود و خیلی کم به کشورهای دیگر اشاره شد。 دیگر هم ترجمه کتاب که در کل روان بود را چندجایی نپسندیدم。 در کل فکر می کنم برای نوجوان‌ها کتاب مناسب‌تری باشد و این در مقدمه هم ذکر شده که اصل کتاب برای نوجوان‌ها و جوان‌ترها نوشته شده است。 نکته آخر هم خوش‌بینی نویسنده با وجود بلاهایی که سرش آمده و از دست دادن خانواده در زمان آلمان نازی بود و مهربانی و لطافتش و رد کردن سریع بخش‌هایی که پر از خشونت و قتل عام بود。 انگار پیرمرد مهربانی تاریخ را برایت به شکل قصه بگوید و به تو درمورد ظلم‌ها و خشونت‌ها هشدار دهد。 。。。more

Like all books written by one person with one set of views there is bias and it’s very Eurocentric。 But as a general history that highlights the major world events based on Europe’s involvement it’s a great overview。 My kids enjoyed listening to me read it aloud。 They asked lots of questions。 It took us a year to get through it because we would stop and dive deeper into the time period or details mentioned。 It was helpful to get things in order and not just learn about one section of the world a Like all books written by one person with one set of views there is bias and it’s very Eurocentric。 But as a general history that highlights the major world events based on Europe’s involvement it’s a great overview。 My kids enjoyed listening to me read it aloud。 They asked lots of questions。 It took us a year to get through it because we would stop and dive deeper into the time period or details mentioned。 It was helpful to get things in order and not just learn about one section of the world at one particular time。 And in the last chapter he admits his flaws。 He admits that there were things he was misinformed on。 He didn’t write it as the perfect history of the world。 But it was very helpful in teaching my kids to understand the multiple sides of every event in history。 As well as give a really great timeline of world events。 I highly recommend it as part of an adults dive into history or to teach your kids as part of their education。 。。。more

I enjoyed reading this book。 But I think this book is originally intended as an introduction to the world history for the European readers。 It could be said that the book’s main viewpoint is Germany; as there are a little of other countries and continent in the book。 Nevertheless， the style and contents of the book is very excellent and is highly recommended for anyone who wants to read a concise overview of the world history。

This book is a light and easy read for anyone wanting to know more about world （primarily European） history and not having the time to read thick history volumes。 For context - it was written by an Austrian amateur historian in the 1930s when he was asked to come up with a children’s version of a condensed history of the world within 6 weeks。 If you keep this in mind and hence expect a slightly outdated Eurocentric view of world history with overtly simplified stories， you won’t be disappointed。 This book is a light and easy read for anyone wanting to know more about world （primarily European） history and not having the time to read thick history volumes。 For context - it was written by an Austrian amateur historian in the 1930s when he was asked to come up with a children’s version of a condensed history of the world within 6 weeks。 If you keep this in mind and hence expect a slightly outdated Eurocentric view of world history with overtly simplified stories， you won’t be disappointed。 The writing style is simple as you would expect from a children’s book， and apart from a few places where the author reveals his own ‘judgment’ and biases， I feel like he maintains a largely neutral tone。 。。。more

I know it's marketed to children and should be judged as such， but since I don't see many 10-year-olds writing reviews here， I guess the adults ought to be warned。 To put it bluntly， this is a terrible book for anyone with a secondary education。 You will not learn anything new， and might in fact get confused with all the oversimplification。 There are no citations or bibliography， and the way it's written makes it a pop-science book suitable for children 10 years or younger。 Although I would pers I know it's marketed to children and should be judged as such， but since I don't see many 10-year-olds writing reviews here， I guess the adults ought to be warned。 To put it bluntly， this is a terrible book for anyone with a secondary education。 You will not learn anything new， and might in fact get confused with all the oversimplification。 There are no citations or bibliography， and the way it's written makes it a pop-science book suitable for children 10 years or younger。 Although I would personally be hesitant to recommend it to even children。 The condensation of the entire history of Mankind in some odd 300 pages， simplifies it to the point of being utterly wrong in many places。 On top of that， the pacing is completely off， some historical figures are described in great detail， while other arguably more important 'events' are simply glossed over。 Besides this， tt suffers from Eurocentric bias as well， although there are some Chinese and South Asian events sprinkled here and there， other regions are not even mentioned， which is precisely the sort of thing one must be careful when dealing with History。 All in all， not worth reading if you can't count your age on your fingertips。 。。。more
