Summary

Greece in the age of Heroes。 Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia。 Here he is nobody, just another unwanted boy living in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles。

Achilles, “best of all the Greeks,” is everything Patroclus is not—strong, beautiful, the child of a goddess—and by all rights their paths should never cross。 Yet one day, Achilles takes the shamed prince under his wing and soon their tentative connection gives way to a steadfast friendship。 As they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine, their bond blossoms into something far deeper—despite the displeasure of Achilles’ mother Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals。

Fate is never far from the heels of Achilles。 When word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, the men of Greece are called upon to lay siege to Troy in her name。 Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause。 Torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus follows Achilles into war, little knowing that the years that follow will test everything they have learned, everything they hold dear。 And that, before he is ready, he will be forced to surrender his friend to the hands of Fate。

Profoundly moving and breathtakingly original, this rendering of the epic Trojan War is a dazzling feat of the imagination, a devastating love story, and an almighty battle between gods and kings, peace and glory, immortal fame and the human heart。

when i first read it i thought it was really good, the writing is beautiful but honestly there are better books。 it is the book that got me back into reading though so there’s that。

Most binge-able book I’ve read in a long time。 Briseis > Achilles probably。 Ajax deserves more credit。

This book contains a beautiful writing style that foretells the story of Patroclus and Achilles。 I read the odyssey for school earlier this year so I recognized many of the names and story of what would follow therefore that gave me greater insight in the story。 It was slow in the beginning but the pace eventually picks up。 I read it over a couple days at the beach and had to put sunglasses in so that the people on the beach wouldn’t see me crying during last 70 or so pages。 It truly was a tragi This book contains a beautiful writing style that foretells the story of Patroclus and Achilles。 I read the odyssey for school earlier this year so I recognized many of the names and story of what would follow therefore that gave me greater insight in the story。 It was slow in the beginning but the pace eventually picks up。 I read it over a couple days at the beach and had to put sunglasses in so that the people on the beach wouldn’t see me crying during last 70 or so pages。 It truly was a tragic love story that will make you sob。 I would definitely recommend for anyone who is into greek mythology and gay love stories。 。。。more

Wowowow。 Such a great book, I read this in about a week which is quick for me。 Enjoyed it more than Circe although both are extremely well-written。 The author does a great job of developing a romantic companionship between Achilles and Patroclus in a way that adds about 500 new layers to this often-dry Ancient Greek mythology。

i love this book so so much, the writing is beautiful and it’s so clear that the author put so much care into it。 i enjoyed reading it a lot and i think that because i’ve always been a fan of greek mythology, it added to my fondness of the book。 the plot was wonderful and if u haven’t read this OMG WAIT TILL U GET TO PAGE TO 294 I WAS SCREAMING IT WAS GENIUS。 a downside is that the middle of the book was slightly boring, hence why i got in a reading slump at the time。 the end parts honestly brok i love this book so so much, the writing is beautiful and it’s so clear that the author put so much care into it。 i enjoyed reading it a lot and i think that because i’ve always been a fan of greek mythology, it added to my fondness of the book。 the plot was wonderful and if u haven’t read this OMG WAIT TILL U GET TO PAGE TO 294 I WAS SCREAMING IT WAS GENIUS。 a downside is that the middle of the book was slightly boring, hence why i got in a reading slump at the time。 the end parts honestly broke me and i didn’t know what to do with myself after i’d finished tsoa but i didn’t cry which is unfortunate because i very much wanted to。 i just have a problem and don’t cry:)))。 。。。more

This book received rave reviews。 Having loved miller’s Circe, I think I missed that this was more of a romance。 I really struggled with the characters。 I found them to be rather weak and clingy。 Miller spins a great tale, so give it a try。 Hopefully it works for you。

her writing is unparalleled。 the phrasing and diction perfectly capture all the good parts of an ancient story。 the emotional quality of this book is intense and the romance is authentic。 the plot is well-paced and intentional。 all of the characters are engaging and driven, with wonderful descriptions and uniqueness。 the ending had me sobbing, and i loved it。 one of my favorites

Phenomenal, that's the only word I can think of when describing this book。 The great thing in this book is that we get to see the boys' whole lives。 We can see Them grow and develop throughout the book。 You noticed all these small and big changes in Them, in the relationship between Them and the differences between the boys。 I felt like I really got to know Them。 It's also really refreshing to Read a book about Patroclus and not Apollo。 Most of the time the book is about the character that acts Phenomenal, that's the only word I can think of when describing this book。 The great thing in this book is that we get to see the boys' whole lives。 We can see Them grow and develop throughout the book。 You noticed all these small and big changes in Them, in the relationship between Them and the differences between the boys。 I felt like I really got to know Them。 It's also really refreshing to Read a book about Patroclus and not Apollo。 Most of the time the book is about the character that acts the most, is the bravest and the most famous…。 Not this one。 This book is about the Friend, the lover, the steady person that Apollo relies on。 It's also one of the first Times that i Read a book about LGBTQ+ people and even though I'm straight, I still really enjoyed their relationship。 Nu favorite character though, is Breisis。 Maybe it's because she is one of the only female characters, maybe it's Just her kindness, courage or cleverness。 She grows so much and I loved to see her grow closer to Patroclus。 I do think she deserved better。 The ending is really well written too! I don't want to spoil but the way it's written really closes the story in the best way for me。 It ties all the loose knots together and it really gives me closure。 I love this book。 It is really popular and it deserves to be。 I even feel as if i've learned some more about greek mythology and history without really feelin like learning something and i love it 。 。。。more

I enjoyed it! The writing style was on point, the characters had personalityyy as we like it and I loved that it was inspired by Greek mythology。 The only critique I can give it was that it didn't stick so much to the retelling。 But honestly the only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because it just didn't do it for me。 I enjoyed it! This was a great book, but not for the reasons I initially thought。To start, if you are new to Greek myhtology, this is a good book to start with。 The plot is relatively simple to follow, and it does a great job of adapting the Illiad。 The writing itself was really good, and it felt poetic at times。 Madeline Miller does a great job at describing scenes and emotions。Initially, I didn't have too high hopes for this book, because I didn't really like Circe, but I ended up really liking this book。 P This was a great book, but not for the reasons I initially thought。To start, if you are new to Greek myhtology, this is a good book to start with。 The plot is relatively simple to follow, and it does a great job of adapting the Illiad。 The writing itself was really good, and it felt poetic at times。 Madeline Miller does a great job at describing scenes and emotions。Initially, I didn't have too high hopes for this book, because I didn't really like Circe, but I ended up really liking this book。 Patroclus was great, there was a lot of action, and I never found myself getting bored。I wasn't a fan of Achilles, and I honestly think he is a bit of a dick, but I don't fault the author for that at all。 He is portrayed like this in the Illiad, and I'm glad that Miller decided to keep him like this in her adaptation rather then making him completely different from the source material。Now, back to what I meant in the first sentence。 From what I've encountered, most people praise and recommend this book for Achilles' and Patroclus' relationship。 While it isn't bad inherently, I just felt like it was a weaker plot point in this book。 We don't get to see many romantic/heartfelt scenes between the two, and the ones we do get are a quick kiss, a sex scene, or Achilles/Patroclus professing how much one means to the other, all of which last between a single paragraph or one or two pages。 A lot of what was shown in this relationship was Patroclus pining for Achilles/thinking about how sexy he is, thinking about romantic moments that happened between them off-screen, or him arguing about something with Achilles。As stated previously, this relationship isn't bad at all。 In fact, I'd say it's relatively good。 The only problem is though that so much of the praise for this book goes towards this relationship, so if you are picking up this book thinking you'll get this 'epic love story that will make you cry', you will be slightly disappointed (as was my case)。In the end, I would suggest reading this book, but not for the 'epic love story'。 Despite that, this book is 100% worth your time。 。。。more
