Summary

"You'll not only break the ice, you'll melt it away with your new skills。" -- Larry King

"The lost art of verbal communication may be revitalized by Leil Lowndes。" -- Harvey McKay, author of "How to Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive"

What is that magic quality makes some people instantly loved and respected? Everyone wants to be their friend (or, if single, their lover!) In business, they rise swiftly to the top of the corporate ladder。 What is their "Midas touch?"

What it boils down to is a more skillful way of dealing with people。

The author has spent her career teaching people how to communicate for success。 In her book How to Talk to Anyone (Contemporary Books, October 2003) Lowndes offers 92 easy and effective sure-fire success techniques-- she takes the reader from first meeting all the way up to sophisticated techniques used by the big winners in life。 In this information-packed book you'll find:

9 ways to make a dynamite first impression 14 ways to master small talk, "big talk," and body language 14 ways to walk and talk like a VIP or celebrity 6 ways to sound like an insider in any crowd 7 ways to establish deep subliminal rapport with anyone 9 ways to feed someone's ego (and know when NOT to!) 11 ways to make your phone a powerful communications tool 15 ways to work a party like a politician works a room 7 ways to talk with tigers and not get eaten alive
In her trademark entertaining and straight-shooting style, Leil gives the techniques catchy names so you'll remember them when you really need them, including: "Rubberneck the Room," "Be a Copyclass," "Come Hither Hands," "Bare Their Hot Button," "The Great Scorecard in the Sky," and "Play the Tombstone Game," for big success in your social life, romance, and business。

How to Talk to Anyone, which is an update of her popular book, Talking the Winner's Way (see the 5-star reviews of the latter) is based on solid research about techniques that work!

By the way, don't confuse How to Talk to Anyone with one of Leil's previous books, How to Talk to Anybody About Anything。 This one is completely different!

Some bullet points were redundant。 Overall about 10 good pointers in communication 。 If you find the whole chapter hard to read, she has summarized boxes at the end。

This book is full of great advice and ways to improve communication, confidence in approaching new people, strategies to continuing conversation and much more。 However, it is worth reading the best book on this subject How to Win Friends and Influence People first。 This draws off many of the principles taught in that book but provides specific advice on communicating and conversations that go beyond the book it uses as its “influence”

Lillian Wong

There were some good tricks in this book, but the overall tone of the book felt manipulative, egocentric, and frankly empty。 I read an early version, with only 62 tips。 I found some of the observations and advise outdated in terms of technology and gender roles。

"How to Talk to Anyone" by Leil Lowndes is my first self-help book。 Before investing in this book, I was apprehensive about the content。 I thought that I would find this undigestable and bland but it turns out that I am glad I bought this book! It does not only tell about verbal and non verbal cues but also tells about pragmatic approaches on how one can ace personal and business relationships。 The author describes all the techniques with her or her friends' anecdotes that the reader can totally relate and it doesn't at all look like they were fabricated。 This book is tinged with humor as author provides her personal insights to the situations and implies that good communication is not only about putting your point across but also being senstive to the listener。 All the 92 techniques are given quirky names that one can always recall in a heartbeat。 I thouroughly enjoyed the read and fell in love with the author。 In tandom with this book, I have bought more self-help books to hone my personality。 。。。more

It's too outdated to be of any practical use。 Her vocabulary seems straight out of a James Cagney gangster film。 Mind you, this book was published in 2003。 She refers to the wealthy as the "Big Spenders" and "Big Winners。" Women are all "gals" that "want to hear compliments from handsome guys。" She seems to live in a world where everyone is cis, white, über-rich, and jumps from a debutante ball to their annual yacht club gala。 She's the type of person who would say she "galavants" in normal conv It's too outdated to be of any practical use。 Her vocabulary seems straight out of a James Cagney gangster film。 Mind you, this book was published in 2003。 She refers to the wealthy as the "Big Spenders" and "Big Winners。" Women are all "gals" that "want to hear compliments from handsome guys。" She seems to live in a world where everyone is cis, white, über-rich, and jumps from a debutante ball to their annual yacht club gala。 She's the type of person who would say she "galavants" in normal conversation。But don't take my jaded word for it。 Read the Amazon reviews。 It's clear they are real and had the same experience I did。 Yes, there are some genuinely useful bits of information, but 80 or so of her 92 tips are utter shite and 。。。more

I mean, I don't understand why this book is so underrated。 Maybe I'm a super introvert who doesn't know basic social skills, and that is why the book surprised me lol。 But I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book。 It was a fun experience, and there's so much I look forward to applying in my day-to-day life。 Thankyou Leil :) I mean, I don't understand why this book is so underrated。 Maybe I'm a super introvert who doesn't know basic social skills, and that is why the book surprised me lol。 But I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book。 It was a fun experience, and there's so much I look forward to applying in my day-to-day life。 Thankyou Leil :) 。。。more

。。。more

Went to what could be described as a networking event recently, and I realized a couple things。 First, I realized that I hate networking。 Secondly, I realized I barely even know how to network from the hello to the goodbye。 Thought this book might help。 Did it? Not really。 I would have been far better off having read an article online than a book filled with vapid anecdotes。 It was a tiring read。

The book doesn’t have real life lessons。 It can be categorised as a diary more than a self help book。 There are a lot of things better written by other authors on the same topic in a factual way。

Don't listen to this audio book。 This would have been much better as an actual read。 I was so annoyed with the reader by the end, it felt like a punishment pushing through this。 Also, there are so many tips, as an audio, it is hard to remember more than five of them。Two stars because some of the information is actually useful and insightful。 Most of it is dated though, like how to set up your answering machine。 The author's use of phrases such as "Big Cats" to describe the wealthy or powerful pe Don't listen to this audio book。 This would have been much better as an actual read。 I was so annoyed with the reader by the end, it felt like a punishment pushing through this。 Also, there are so many tips, as an audio, it is hard to remember more than five of them。Two stars because some of the information is actually useful and insightful。 Most of it is dated though, like how to set up your answering machine。 The author's use of phrases such as "Big Cats" to describe the wealthy or powerful person's attention you seek, just killed me。 。。。more

This was fun and mildly useful。 But instead of 92 strategies, 95% of which I’ll likely forget and never employ, I wish there were 10 big bombers that I would never forget。 As it is, I’ll need this on the coffee table or next to the crapper to constantly refresh my terrible memory。 Note: she sort of criticizes Carnegie’s How to Win Friends as outdated, but I remember so many of his recos。 Maybe hers is more relevant?
