Summary

A tribe is any group of people, large or small, who are connected to one another, a leader, and an idea。 For millions of years, humans have been seeking out tribes, be they religious, ethnic, economic, political, or even musical (think of the Deadheads)。 It's our nature。

Now the Internet has eliminated the barriers of geography, cost, and time。 All those blogs and social networking sites are helping existing tribes get bigger。 But more important, they're enabling countless new tribes to be born—groups of ten or ten thousand or ten million who care about their iPhones, or a political campaign, or a new way to fight global warming。 And so the key question: Who is going to lead us?

The Web can do amazing things, but it can't provide leadership。 That still has to come from individuals—people just like you who have passion about something。 The explosion in tribes means that anyone who wants to make a difference now has the tools at her fingertips。

If you think leadership is for other people, think again—leaders come in surprising packages。 Consider Joel Spolsky and his international tribe of scary-smart software engineers。 Or Gary Vaynerhuck, a wine expert with a devoted following of enthusiasts。 Chris Sharma leads a tribe of rock climbers up impossible cliff faces, while Mich Mathews, a VP at Microsoft, runs her internal tribe of marketers from her cube in Seattle。 All they have in common is the desire to change things, the ability to connect a tribe, and the willingness to lead。

If you ignore this opportunity, you risk turning into a "sheepwalker"—someone who fights to protect the status quo at all costs, never asking if obedience is doing you (or your organization) any good。 Sheepwalkers don't do very well these days。

Tribes will make you think (really think) about the opportunities in leading your fellow employees, customers, investors, believers, hobbyists, or readers。 。 。 。 It's not easy, but it's easier than you think。

This is purple cow -kind of- tweaked to talk about leadership。

It's ironic that this books is exactly the opposite of what the result of leadership according to its author: a disordered lump of parts instead of a whole。 The book good could do with some more editing, cutting away some of the fat, and ordering the book around some central messages。 Yes, the author tried to excuse the lack of structure by saying that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to leadership, and that criticism of the lack of structure only show what a great risk-taking leader he is It's ironic that this books is exactly the opposite of what the result of leadership according to its author: a disordered lump of parts instead of a whole。 The book good could do with some more editing, cutting away some of the fat, and ordering the book around some central messages。 Yes, the author tried to excuse the lack of structure by saying that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to leadership, and that criticism of the lack of structure only show what a great risk-taking leader he is。 But aside from the fact that this makes his position immune to criticism, I don't think that this is a good reason not to pay attention to structure。 However, there were some interesting take aways from the book。 I suspect that that's partly because I have not read other books on leadership, and I doubt that these points are original to this book, but still。 - The main goal of a leader is to promote a central idea, and then to facilitating communication among the tribe。- The difference between managers and leaders。 Managers tell people what to do according to existing standards, and punish those who slack or do differently。 leaders, instead facilitate communcation within a tribe, inspiring individuals to do the work from intrinsic motivation to achieve values he or she aspires to。- Succesful individuals are those who are willing to be wrong, to take risks。 This is discomfortable, because you risk failing in front of many people who might think you are a jackass, but it has to be done to achieve something new and great。 But it is also fun - those who enjoy their work the most are often those who are making a change。Perhaps the book functions more like a call to action, than as a piece of advice。 。。。more

There were a few good points that stood out to me, mostly fresh spins on words I already knew。 But ultimately, I felt this book didn't offer much but managed to fill many pages。 This gave it a repetitive feel and I dragged myself through it。 Ultimately, it's not a book I'd recommend over many other business/personal development favorites。 There were a few good points that stood out to me, mostly fresh spins on words I already knew。 But ultimately, I felt this book didn't offer much but managed to fill many pages。 This gave it a repetitive feel and I dragged myself through it。 Ultimately, it's not a book I'd recommend over many other business/personal development favorites。 。。。more

I'm just not sure what to do with this book。 The information is interesting, but the writing is so, so choppy and disconnected。 I felt like I was constantly missing key information and kept waiting for the story to begin。 It was like reading through a notebook someone prepared before giving a TED talk--bits of good stories and possible slides ready for a PowerPoint or an interactive group presentation--but just not quite made to read in book form。 I'm just not sure what to do with this book。 The information is interesting, but the writing is so, so choppy and disconnected。 I felt like I was constantly missing key information and kept waiting for the story to begin。 It was like reading through a notebook someone prepared before giving a TED talk--bits of good stories and possible slides ready for a PowerPoint or an interactive group presentation--but just not quite made to read in book form。 。。。more

I truly thought this book would be a cogent analysis on documented instances of mob-rule and the dangers of group-think。 Why I was under that impression is beyond me! (the description suggests nothing of the sort) It is a corporate hymn to the desires of the "market"—Godin's words。 “Tribes makes our lives better。 And leading a tribe is the best life of all。” Unpopular opinion: tribes can be detrimental to a healthy society (tribes != community), and leaders are overrated。“Most people who see Twi I truly thought this book would be a cogent analysis on documented instances of mob-rule and the dangers of group-think。 Why I was under that impression is beyond me! ¡Otro libro de marketing más!A pesar de no ser un libro tan grande, siento que se vuelve repetitivo。 En mi opinion ocupa ejemplos de más y facilmente podría ser un libro de la mitad del tamaño。

Although this book came to me with the highest recommendations, I personally found it okay。 I liked Godin's thoughts about being a leader worth following and building relationships。 The book had more of an inspirational pep talk feel rather than a specific strategy guide。 Not a bad place to start, but you'll need more if you're trying to give yourself a business/entrepreneur/marketing education。 Although this book came to me with the highest recommendations, I personally found it okay。 I liked Godin's thoughts about being a leader worth following and building relationships。 The book had more of an inspirational pep talk feel rather than a specific strategy guide。 Not a bad place to start, but you'll need more if you're trying to give yourself a business/entrepreneur/marketing education。 。。。more

Quick book on leadership and finding your tribe in the digital landscape。 This was part motivational, and part guide on serving others by finding a likeminded group of people who care about the same cause。 Lots of anecdotes and examples based on other leaders - from large to small, that have implemented change。A bit eerie reading this book post-Trump because I think strong tribes that are created by a charismatic leader, and that don't always have the public's best interest in mind can result in Quick book on leadership and finding your tribe in the digital landscape。 This was part motivational, and part guide on serving others by finding a likeminded group of people who care about the same cause。 Lots of anecdotes and examples based on other leaders - from large to small, that have implemented change。A bit eerie reading this book post-Trump because I think strong tribes that are created by a charismatic leader, and that don't always have the public's best interest in mind can result in tribal warfare。 This isn't something that Godin predicated when he originally wrote the book, but something that came to mind while reading it in 2021。Overall I think a lot of the principles in this book can be applied and used for anyone in helping raise awareness of a greater cause, and finding the leader within。 。。。more

The book tries really hard to sell the idea that it contains some sort of a revolutionary insight into what makes good leaders and what makes strong communities but if you start to dissect it, you are left with a bunch of random ideas, poorly supported statements and an overall sense of bewilderment since by the end you wonder what convinced an editor to allow this fruit basket to be published。

Stephen Bernau

Godin has a smooth way of writing that makes things seem obvious。 I had trouble getting into the book, but the ideas were great。 It’s a great demonstration about how we culturally shift and default to those who are willing to lead。 We follow in line with them。 Some organizations don’t- they cling to the old ways, and they slowly die。 “You gotta go out on a limb。 That’s where the fruit is。”

Chris

The opening premise completely lacks understanding。 Seeing as we haven't been human beings for 'millions of years。' It's a crass and tenuous analogy that nearly all human society can be termed as 'tribal。'Why hasn't the author even done a cursory search of the word 'tribe。' This is one of those 'nothing' self development books。 The opening premise completely lacks understanding。 Seeing as we haven't been human beings for 'millions of years。' It's a crass and tenuous analogy that nearly all human society can be termed as 'tribal。'Why hasn't the author even done a cursory search of the word 'tribe。' This is one of those 'nothing' self development books。 。。。more

So I get Seth Godin's email which consists of small motivational soundbites。 This book feels like a collection of them, loosely gathered under the subject of leadership。 Godin's style is bite-sized pieces that focus on one message。 Some of the pieces say the same thing but with a different anecdote or story but they're all somewhat related to leadership which to Godin means to assemble a tribe and lead the tribe to believe and do what you as a leader believe in。There's no scientific or analysis So I get Seth Godin's email which consists of small motivational soundbites。 This book feels like a collection of them, loosely gathered under the subject of leadership。 Godin's style is bite-sized pieces that focus on one message。 Some of the pieces say the same thing but with a different anecdote or story but they're all somewhat related to leadership which to Godin means to assemble a tribe and lead the tribe to believe and do what you as a leader believe in。There's no scientific or analysis here in this book to build up a case。 No argumentation。 Just a bunch of bite-sized motivational quips for your self-confirmation bias if that's the kind of person you already think you are。 I got extremely little value out of this book, and none of what I read really challenged my thinking because I just can't take any of this at face value when all Godin does is find an anecdote to confirm his beliefs。 Even worse is when Godin tries to construct a metaphor which makes no sense (something about a non-literal unicorn in a balloon factory to show how leaders change status quo)。 And probably worst of all, Godin really seems like a skilled manipulator when his very last "essay" essentially says: if you think this is not concrete enough and too vague, then that was exactly his point? Perhaps the biggest lesson to take out of this book is to look how Godin tries to construct his own tribe by posting all of this vague talk that plays into people's idea of themselves as a leader。 In any case, skip this, you'll get the same from his newsletter but there's so many books out there that at least tries to make the case for itself。 。。。more

There are tribes everywhere, created by a shared passion or desire between people。 And those tribes need a leader。 That leader can be you。 Or me。 This was easy to read, and maybe it was a lot of sound bites, but multiple things resonated with me throughout the book。 I enjoyed it。 I found this book motivating and inspiring。

This was a book that didn’t need to be written。 If it were a blog post, maybe it has some value, but a 150 page book repeating the same vague point offered next to nothing。 Yes, leadership is important。 Yes, anyone can be a leader。 Yes, it takes courage and risks to have people follow and believe in you。 That’s essentially the entire book in a nutshell。 There is no real advice in here whatsoever。 The most infuriating part is the author knows it。 He puts these prefaced almost subtle apologies/war This was a book that didn’t need to be written。 If it were a blog post, maybe it has some value, but a 150 page book repeating the same vague point offered next to nothing。 Yes, leadership is important。 Yes, anyone can be a leader。 Yes, it takes courage and risks to have people follow and believe in you。 That’s essentially the entire book in a nutshell。 There is no real advice in here whatsoever。 The most infuriating part is the author knows it。 He puts these prefaced almost subtle apologies/warnings — something I’ve never seen in a book — “people might say this (book) is too disorganized or not practical enough。” Well if you made that assumption, why not spend more time editing the book until you can dive deeper instead of passing off this nonsense as useful information? It's a good book, but it's way more sentimental than practical。 If you are looking for a book that tells you how to lead, this is not the one。 If you are looking for a book that tells you why to lead, and to find the courage to do so, then this might be a good choice for you。 It's a good book, but it's way more sentimental than practical。 If you are looking for a book that tells you how to lead, this is not the one。 If you are looking for a book that tells you why to lead, and to find the courage to do so, then this might be a good choice for you。 。。。more

The book is written as if it was composed of short notes。 If you are interested in leadership, change, innovation, I recommend you to read。 It makes you feel the need for a movement against the status quo, the dynamics of that movement and gives the necessary hints to lead the tribes of the twenty-first century。

Godin does an excellent job explaining why and how to create Tribes (or small social networks) around your products。 In usual form, his books are concise, well worded and easy to digest。 My only reservation for not giving this book five stars is this concept has been taken and enhanced by other individuals。 A must read "topic" though for modern marketers。 Godin does an excellent job explaining why and how to create Tribes (or small social networks) around your products。 In usual form, his books are concise, well worded and easy to digest。 My only reservation for not giving this book five stars is this concept has been taken and enhanced by other individuals。 A must read "topic" though for modern marketers。 。。。more

This book sums up what it means to be a remarkable Leader and create change in dynamic ways。 Through abandoning the status quo and creating a tribe a followers, big things can happen。 The teachings are given through snippets throughout the book。 In this sense, it would have been better to read it。 Though I got a lot of nuggets out of the book, having a hard copy to mark up (while listening) would have been ideal。 I support the author's view of leadership and found a lot of familiar insights, alo This book sums up what it means to be a remarkable Leader and create change in dynamic ways。 Through abandoning the status quo and creating a tribe a followers, big things can happen。 The teachings are given through snippets throughout the book。 In this sense, it would have been better to read it。 Though I got a lot of nuggets out of the book, having a hard copy to mark up (while listening) would have been ideal。 I support the author's view of leadership and found a lot of familiar insights, along with new things to ponder and implement。 My criticisms are that it is somewhat basic - maybe I need the 2。0 version?
