Summary

THIS IS THE WAY THE WORLD ENDS。。。 FOR THE LAST TIME。

The Moon will soon return。 Whether this heralds the destruction of humankind or something worse will depend on two women。

Essun has inherited the power of Alabaster Tenring。 With it, she hopes to find her daughter Nassun and forge a world in which every orogene child can grow up safe。

For Nassun, her mother's mastery of the Obelisk Gate comes too late。 She has seen the evil of the world, and accepted what her mother will not admit: that sometimes what is corrupt cannot be cleansed, only destroyed。

The remarkable conclusion to the post-apocalyptic and highly acclaimed trilogy that began with the multi-award-nominated The Fifth Season。

Sadly, my difficulty to get involved in the story due to its absolute complexity lasted till the end of this book。I still feel like I missed so many things。 I feel at the end this complexity ( especially the vocabulary) didn’t add anything to the story。Still a 3,5 because it is good but oh my it is difficult to read。

I hated “The Obelisk Gate” and now I simply cannot get round to finishing this trilogy, so for now DNF。

Claire

I loved the first book, enjoyed the second book, and had THE HARDEST TIME finishing this one。 I wanted so badly to like it😔

Izzy

I don’t think I I liked this one quite as much as the first two— I just didn’t care much about that character’s back story— but still one of the best trilogies I’ve ever read。 Loved the very end, too。

Holy shit this trilogy is so good。

Meg

Satisfying end to the trilogy - off in search of more of her books to devour!

Iris

This was a great way to end this series。 It was action packed and had a lot of character and plot development。 This was much better than the second book and kept me hooked the whole time。 The ending left me shook and I should have seen it coming, but I didn’t and it made me so sad😭

4。5 stars。 This final installment started out a bit slow for me, but I'm in awe of how Jemisin tied the whole trilogy together。 My favorite book of the series was #2。 Highly recommend the audiobook versions of all three! 4。5 stars。 This final installment started out a bit slow for me, but I'm in awe of how Jemisin tied the whole trilogy together。 My favorite book of the series was #2。 Highly recommend the audiobook versions of all three! 。。。more

Also great but trailed off a little - I kind of lost what's happening at some points, and just shrugged and said "well, our heroes have to do X magic thing now。" Why did they have to bring the moon back? How does that solve our problems, besides "magically it will"? I don't know - but I feel this with lots of trilogies so maybe I should learn to pay more attention even after the action gets more grandiose。 Also great but trailed off a little - I kind of lost what's happening at some points, and just shrugged and said "well, our heroes have to do X magic thing now。" Why did they have to bring the moon back? It was alright I guess。 Looking at the other reviews I’m not sure we read the same book series。 For something that got so many 5 star reviews and won so many Hugo awards I expected so much more than I got。 I still don’t really know why I finished the series other than to see if it actually went anywhere。 It seemed like it was building up to something that it couldn’t deliver on。 And the whole moon subplot turned out to be really boring and felt like an afterthought。Nassun’s POV chapters continue It was alright I guess。 Looking at the other reviews I’m not sure we read the same book series。 For something that got so many 5 star reviews and won so many Hugo awards I expected so much more than I got。 I still don’t really know why I finished the series other than to see if it actually went anywhere。 It seemed like it was building up to something that it couldn’t deliver on。 And the whole moon subplot turned out to be really boring and felt like an afterthought。Nassun’s POV chapters continued to make me want to stop reading。 Her whole character arc was really annoying and unfulfilling。 There’s very little reason for her to do almost anything she wound up doing。 She has the capacity to unconditionally love a psychopath killer and just straight up hates her mom at the end for almost no good reason。 Doesn’t even try to understand her point of view even after learning more of her story…but she clings to Schaffa, a guy who has her murder a bunch of roggas in cold blood, because he’s a little nice to her sometimes。 I wanted to pull my hair out listening to her reasons for basically anything she did。I think the concept for this series was cool but it ran its course after the first book。 And even then, that book almost dares you to stop reading because of how hard it is to follow the second person narrative。 。。。more

A satisfying end to the Broken Earth trilogy, with amazing world-building and unpredictable turns。

This final book launches forward after a somewhat stagnant second instalment。 A satisfying and moving conclusion。

Wow- amazing ending to this series。 The world building, cultural critique, character development were all so satisfying。 This third book was by far my favorite。

Quite confusing, and a little underwhelming after the first book which introduced the stillness。 This book expands to corepoint and the stone eaters history, and these are valuable additions。 However the reading is slightly difficult when the author keeps switching the narrator。

In the end this series was unable to keep up with the brilliance of its 1st book。 Although I was spoiled about certain elements of the 1st book (unlike with the next 2) it was somehow more suspenseful and enjoyable than the next two trilogy conclusions。 Although the author is talented in her writing style and use of 2nd person narrative (I like how this had a purpose in the end, helping Essun remember who she was) I feel that the world building, although interesting, was a little too complicated In the end this series was unable to keep up with the brilliance of its 1st book。 Although I was spoiled about certain elements of the 1st book (unlike with the next 2) it was somehow more suspenseful and enjoyable than the next two trilogy conclusions。 Although the author is talented in her writing style and use of 2nd person narrative (I like how this had a purpose in the end, helping Essun remember who she was) I feel that the world building, although interesting, was a little too complicated at times and it was kind of confusing to see who the villains were and what the ultimate goal was。 I feel that keeping the mother and daughter apart for so long was frustrating more than anything else and apart from the cool magic system, the hunt for the stolen moon (i like how Hoa was responsible for this) this book was one I felt like a chore to get through, rushing through it just so i could say i finished the trilogy。 I feel Merphy Napiers review sums up my feelings for this series as a whole"I love the world building and depth of these characters, but I just didn't have a lot of interest in what was happening with the actual story after book one。 I was hoping that would change with book three but unfortunately, the intrigue was just lost for me。 I think this author is extremely talented and want to read more of her work though" 。。。more

These are the best books I've read since Miéville years ago。 Just as intricate, just as well written, just as much mind-blowing and original world building。 Now that I know what I do (things are explained much more by the end of the third book) I feel I need to read them all again。 And they're so good I won't mind one bit。Ten stars if I could。 These are the best books I've read since Miéville years ago。 Just as intricate, just as well written, just as much mind-blowing and original world building。 Now that I know what I do (things are explained much more by the end of the third book) I feel I need to read them all again。 And they're so good I won't mind one bit。Ten stars if I could。 。。。more

This was one of those series that I was sad about finishing because it means I’ll never be able to read it for the first time again。 I’m not usually a fantasy fan but this series really kept me hooked throughout all three books。 I definitely recommend!

A great ending to an original and fascinating series。 I struggled a bit to keep up with the earlier ones, but this one tied everything up, even if not how I expected。 That's a good thing as I didn't expect the scope of the tale and the humanity in it。 No spoilers, but it was an intense read at the end and one of those books you put down at the end and have to take the time to absorb it。 Amazing book。 A great ending to an original and fascinating series。 I struggled a bit to keep up with the earlier ones, but this one tied everything up, even if not how I expected。 That's a good thing as I didn't expect the scope of the tale and the humanity in it。 No spoilers, but it was an intense read at the end and one of those books you put down at the end and have to take the time to absorb it。 Amazing book。 。。。more
