Summary

In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born。 But Circe has neither the look nor the voice of divinity, and is scorned and rejected by her kin。 Increasingly isolated, she turns to mortals for companionship, leading her to discover a power forbidden to the gods: witchcraft。

When love drives Circe to cast a dark spell, wrathful Zeus banishes her to the remote island of Aiaia。 There she learns to harness her occult craft, drawing strength from nature。 But she will not always be alone; many are destined to pass through Circe's place of exile, entwining their fates with hers。 The messenger god, Hermes。 The craftsman, Daedalus。 A ship bearing a golden fleece。 And wily Odysseus, on his epic voyage home。

There is danger for a solitary woman in this world, and Circe's independence draws the wrath of men and gods alike。 To protect what she holds dear, Circe must decide whether she belongs with the deities she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love。

Circe。 Goddess of Sorcery。 A powerful book of a Greek minor goddess left out of the picture。 This fictional retelling of beloved epic poems and stories has a modern dialect to sooth the reader and sing a sweet song。 In her own doing, Circe becomes the powerful woman she is by learning of those around her and their ugly faults。 She battles her exiled life with trying her hardest to fit-in but realizes life is much better after she learns the truth meaning behind gifted gods。 Immortality vs mortal Circe。 Goddess of Sorcery。 A powerful book of a Greek minor goddess left out of the picture。 This fictional retelling of beloved epic poems and stories has a modern dialect to sooth the reader and sing a sweet song。 In her own doing, Circe becomes the powerful woman she is by learning of those around her and their ugly faults。 She battles her exiled life with trying her hardest to fit-in but realizes life is much better after she learns the truth meaning behind gifted gods。 Immortality vs mortality: why price will you pay? Really well written and although it is quite long and not necessarily a "page turner" I was never bored。 A lot of different stories tied into this one and overall very enjoyable。 Really well written and although it is quite long and not necessarily a "page turner" I was never bored。 A lot of different stories tied into this one and overall very enjoyable。 。。。more

Love, love, loved this book。 It’s probably one of my favourites and I don’t give that title lightly。 Expertly written and surprisingly true to the source myth without retelling the same old story for the thousandth time

Since I loved Song of Achilles, I read Circe。 The whole first half was not interesting to me。 I didn't even want to continue reading it。 It was all bad people doing bad things to each other。 Horrific stories。 Again, not a fan of Greek mythology to begin with。 But I persisted。 And the second half was so much better。 Circe became a likable character。 Her story became interesting and different once she fell in love and became a mother。 It turned the whole book around for me。 I really liked the way Since I loved Song of Achilles, I read Circe。 The whole first half was not interesting to me。 I didn't even want to continue reading it。 It was all bad people doing bad things to each other。 Horrific stories。 Again, not a fan of Greek mythology to begin with。 But I persisted。 And the second half was so much better。 Circe became a likable character。 Her story became interesting and different once she fell in love and became a mother。 It turned the whole book around for me。 I really liked the way it was all resolved in the second half。 And the ending was perfect。 。。。more

Fun & easy to read :-) There's no real plot; this reads more like an autobiography, but I liked that。 Fun & easy to read :-) There's no real plot; this reads more like an autobiography, but I liked that。 。。。more

I'm not a fan of Greek Mythology, but I enjoyed this book。It is the re-telling of the classic Odyssey。 We know the story, we know how everything turns out。 Yet, seen from Circe's side the story seems fresh and new。Circe's point of view throws light on the lives of Gods & Goddesses that we might otherwise miss。 How living an immortal life doesn't free you from the negative emotions of jealousy, lust, self-pity, vengeance。And that sexism exists in their world too!Humans live a limited life and bec I'm not a fan of Greek Mythology, but I enjoyed this book。It is the re-telling of the classic Odyssey。 We know the story, we know how everything turns out。 Yet, seen from Circe's side the story seems fresh and new。Circe's point of view throws light on the lives of Gods & Goddesses that we might otherwise miss。 How living an immortal life doesn't free you from the negative emotions of jealousy, lust, self-pity, vengeance。And that sexism exists in their world too!Humans live a limited life and because of that mortality, can make a richer connection with other people and the earth。 。。。more

I liked this book。 This is a well written retelling of Circe。 I loved the characters especially Circe, she’s great fun。 If you’re a fan of Greek mythology then it’s definitely a must but even if you aren’t into the mythology, I think you will like it。

This was a great feminist rewriting of the goddess Circe。 Loved how she developed over the hundreds of thousands of year。

I expected more from this book, maybe Song of Achilles just set my standards too high! Not much happens, it’s pretty boring and very heavy on internal monologue。

A great example of storytelling。 Madeline Miller stays true to the Epic。 She tells Circe's side of the story you never knew you were missing。 Trust me when I say, you will sympathize, admire, and root for Circe the whole book through。 You will want to see her get her revenge, her happy ending, and the respect she rightly deserves。 Admittedly, Circe did not devastate me like The Songs of Achilles。 Which in all fairness to Circe, Son of Achilles was absolutely phenomenal in everyway! Despite the 3 star rating, I really did enjoy Circe。 And I truly believe, any lover of Greek Mythology will enjoy reading it too。 It is packed full of adventure, monsters, heroes and maters of the heart。 In all likelihood, if I hadn't just read Songs of Achilles last month, and my heart wasn't still in shatters, I probably would have given Circe a higher rating。 I am a big fan of Madeline Millers writing and can’t wait to hear who she tackles next。 。。。more

I’ve been wanting to read this book for years and I was so excited when I ordered it from Book Of The Month。 It felt promising that it had a book of the year for 2018 on it。 I am disappointed I didn’t love this book。 I did like it and it’s clear the author knows how to write。 I just have to feel this was overhyped。

First half way incredibly slow and lacked significant character development for all but Circe herself。 I would recommend pushing through though because it picks up and makes you feel all the feels- one disturbing scene near the middle literally kept me up at night with anger and disgust, but other parts had me smiling, laughing, crying, and wanting to talk to everyone I knew about this wonderful book。 I almost felt like I was in Circe’s head and could feel her turmoil myself。 The ending was abso First half way incredibly slow and lacked significant character development for all but Circe herself。 I would recommend pushing through though because it picks up and makes you feel all the feels- one disturbing scene near the middle literally kept me up at night with anger and disgust, but other parts had me smiling, laughing, crying, and wanting to talk to everyone I knew about this wonderful book。 I almost felt like I was in Circe’s head and could feel her turmoil myself。 The ending was absolutely beautiful and I cried。 Mildly predictable but I don’t mind。 After all, it is based on Greek Mythology so much of the subplot is well known stories。 Looking forward to reading more from this author。 。。。more
