Pretty typical type of story for this type of book - medieval lord is forced into marriage with a girl half his age, but they overcome。。。stuff。。。and fall in love。 He is handsome and charming, she is feisty, damaged and brave。 I do enjoy this type of story, though, especially the medieval setting (during the reign of William Rufus and Henry I and set in the Welsh marches), and this was well-written, if a little clumsily。This was Ms。 Chadwick's first (published) book, and it shows。 She uses a lot Pretty typical type of story for this type of book - medieval lord is forced into marriage with a girl half his age, but they overcome。。。stuff。。。and fall in love。 He is handsome and charming, she is feisty, damaged and brave。 I do enjoy this type of story, though, especially the medieval setting (during the reign of William Rufus and Henry I and set in the Welsh marches), and this was well-written, if a little clumsily。This was Ms。 Chadwick's first (published) book, and it shows。 She uses a lot of Welsh phrases with no translation, which was annoying, and also a lot of "period" words which I had to look up the meanings, only to find they were not period at all, but of a much later time (ex。 chausses (a sort of men's hose) 1350 - 1400 or tocsin (alarm) from the late 16th century or chirurgeon (surgeon) from the 13th century)。 A niggle, I know, but if you're going to use words that force people to look them up, maybe make sure they're accurate to the time you're writing about。 Of course, when the book was published in 1990, people didn't have these little pocket computers they carry around with them everywhere that gave them detailed definitions and origins of words, but still。。。The sections on battles and hunts went on too long for my tastes。The "twist" of Judith's paternity was a little too obvious, and I figured it out very early。The one character I was confused about was Elflin。 Guy and Eric both noted a resemblance to *someone*, but couldn't recall who, but that went nowhere。 I can't for the life of me figure out why that detail was included without a payoff (maybe it pays off in future books?)。One more thing。。。 I normally hate when the hero cheats in books (doesn't make him a hero IMO), but in this case, Judith was recoiling from Guy's every touch even after a year of marriage, so what was he supposed to do。 It's not like he went back to his mistress。Despite those things, I did enjoy the book, and didn't want to put it down。 The characters were engaging and flawed, some were downright evil, but you have to have villains to root against, right? 。。。more

I won't spoil it, but the author does a good job of keeping you on the edge of your seat while you read。 The dialogue is snappy and intelligent。 I won't spoil it, but the author does a good job of keeping you on the edge of your seat while you read。 The dialogue is snappy and intelligent。 。。。more

No wonder Elizabeth Chadwick is known for medieval fiction。。。 this was the first book she published and it’s splendid! I’ve read a few of her books already but I’ve enjoyed this one the most so far。 A arranged marriage turns to love on the England-Welsh border in 1098。

Good historical fiction focussing on a much overlooked period of history。 Love how the language and vocabulary was of an archaic nature as well。 Well researched certainly and well woven。 Cant wait to read more of this series。

Elizabeth

My second Elizabeth Chadwick novel and she’s easily becoming a favorite historical fiction author for medieval history。

4。5 🌟 Really enjoyed this! Really interesting to read and fast paced。 It documents the start of Henry i’s reign as king, which leads to the time known as the Anarchy。 I found it interesting to read this time period as i have read a lot about the warring Stephen and Matilda (Henry i’s daughter), and piecing it all together。 I liked the setting of the Welsh Marches too。 Very atmospheric。Highly anticipate the second book 🤓

It’s was a very light read。 Enjoyable but not massively eventful。 Although that’s not necessarily a bad thing as it makes it a very relaxing book。

Fabulous readI loved this book。 Beautifully written and meticulously researched。 To think this was her FIRST novel! I have read many of her wonderful books and this one was well up to standard。 Lovely story, you are right there with the characters, who were perfectly drawn and very real! Read it and enjoy as much as I did!

Loved this one。 Well written。 Top favorite of this author。

Abibliophobia-the fear of running out of things to read 🥺

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 starsSet in the very late 1000s and very early 1100s during the reign of King William “Rufus” and then his brother King Henry, The Wild Hunt was a fascinating, yet slow paced historical romance。Judith was not yet sixteen in the beginning of the book and held a childlike innocence, despite being pretty scrappy。 I really respected that Guyon left Judith alone in bed until she was older。 Judith was a very skilled healer, a popular trope for heroines in historical fiction for some reason。 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 starsSet in the very late 1000s and very early 1100s during the reign of King William “Rufus” and then his brother King Henry, The Wild Hunt was a fascinating, yet slow paced historical romance。Judith was not yet sixteen in the beginning of the book and held a childlike innocence, despite being pretty scrappy。 I really respected that Guyon left Judith alone in bed until she was older。 Judith was a very skilled healer, a popular trope for heroines in historical fiction for some reason。Guy was around thirty and well-loved by court and the ladys before his marriage to Judith。 He had a strong connection to Wales as he was part Welsh。I liked that his former mistress was not out for revenge or conniving or anything of the sort as I feel it is way overplayed in these types of books。 Rhosyn was independent and her whole character wasn’t dependent on Guy and being mean and troublesome。 She just wanted what was best for her children, including her daughter by Guy。All in all, I would recommend this book if you enjoy historical romance set in this era and written in the 90s。 。。。more

I enjoyed this book which was very well written and well researched。 It deals with an historical period that I am not overly familiar with and I enjoyed the attention to the historic detail。 Although I found that the writing easily carried me through the book, I would have liked a little bit more to have happened in the story。 Altogether, a good book。

I personally really enjoyed this read, it was captivating。 I felt like I was constantly being educated whilst reading the book, not in a historical sense as much, but a vocabulary sense。 I found myself having to get the dictionary out for words such as ‘cantankerous’ and ‘aplomb’。 The only thing that really bothered me was the usage of Welsh sentences that did not come with a translation。 Simple enough to translate, but still annoying nevertheless。Ultimately, I am excited to read the next two in I personally really enjoyed this read, it was captivating。 I felt like I was constantly being educated whilst reading the book, not in a historical sense as much, but a vocabulary sense。 I found myself having to get the dictionary out for words such as ‘cantankerous’ and ‘aplomb’。 The only thing that really bothered me was the usage of Welsh sentences that did not come with a translation。 Simple enough to translate, but still annoying nevertheless。Ultimately, I am excited to read the next two in the trilogy。 4。5/5 。。。more

The very first book written by Elizabeth Chadwick and the first of a trilogy。 She is a favourite of mine and I have almost all of her books on my shelves。 This one disappointed。 Lots of fighting, lots of hatred and bloodshed, an on and off romance and a few twists。 An ok read but there are lots more of Elizabeth's books that I found so much more enjoyable。 I have to admit to skipping pages on and off too。 The very first book written by Elizabeth Chadwick and the first of a trilogy。 She is a favourite of mine and I have almost all of her books on my shelves。 This one disappointed。 Lots of fighting, lots of hatred and bloodshed, an on and off romance and a few twists。 An ok read but there are lots more of Elizabeth's books that I found so much more enjoyable。 I have to admit to skipping pages on and off too。 。。。more
