Summary

Written by former DJ/producer Harold Heath, Long Relationships: My Incredible Journey From Unknown DJ to Small-time DJ is a biographical account of a DJ career defined by a deep love of music and a shallow amount of success。 It’s the first book to detail exactly what DJing is like for the 99% of DJs who never make it big。 Covering electro, hip hop, rare groove, acid house, rave and the UK underground club scene, it’s a 30-odd year tale of a life lived in dance music。 Long Relationships is full of tales of clubs, raves, warehouses, DJing, music, record production, record deals, low-level international travel, shady promoters, dodgy club security, magical dance floor moments and much more。

Long Relationships is the immensely readable memoir of DJ Harold Heath。 Overall, I found it quite funny, in that oh-so-British way, highly relatable (as a low-tier DJ myself) and a little meandering, but not too self-indulgent。 There are some great lists of Harold's favourite tunes (the rare groove selection is killer) and hilarious party anecdotes, but unless you have an interest in DJ/dance music culture, there's probably not a lot for you here。 For something similar but with more celebrities Long Relationships is the immensely readable memoir of DJ Harold Heath。 Overall, I found it quite funny, in that oh-so-British way, highly relatable (as a low-tier DJ myself) and a little meandering, but not too self-indulgent。 There are some great lists of Harold's favourite tunes (the rare groove selection is killer) and hilarious party anecdotes, but unless you have an interest in DJ/dance music culture, there's probably not a lot for you here。 For something similar but with more celebrities and extreme substance abuse, try Moby's memoir Porcelain。Note: Goodreads seems to incorrectly list the page count as zero; the correct number is 274。 。。。more

Excellent book。 A candid, humorous and insightful chronicle of a musical world that has remained, in North America, curiously off the radar, undocumented, and remembered strictly by anecdotes or Facebook groups shared by those who partook and no one else。 The British movement led the way and inspired much of what the rest of the world adopted in the sphere of electronic music, so the recollections and stories of a British player in that scene are fascinating, inspiring and moving。The story of DJ Excellent book。 A candid, humorous and insightful chronicle of a musical world that has remained, in North America, curiously off the radar, undocumented, and remembered strictly by anecdotes or Facebook groups shared by those who partook and no one else。 The British movement led the way and inspired much of what the rest of the world adopted in the sphere of electronic music, so the recollections and stories of a British player in that scene are fascinating, inspiring and moving。The story of DJ culture and its evolution throughout the radical and seismic changes in the music industry, and what those changes have meant for intelligent, layered and thoughtful electronic music in the face of the plastic and idiotized EDM mass-production sham, is also very well told。Highly recommended for anyone who DJs (actively or not) or who has had a personal connection with the underground electronic music world。 。。。more

Every page is full of love and passion for music and DJ-ing, this is an honest and heartfelt love letter to the life of “a small time DJ”。 The tales are funny, nostalgic and entertaining with extraordinary knowledge and intimate insight as Harold tells you his life story, candidly sharing the many many ups and downs his journey has taken。
