4。5 starsSome of the earlier chapters are taken word for words from her blog, which I'd already read, and there were a couple of pages about food/nutrition which were complete hokum - but otherwise this was a really useful read。 I feel much better informed about what my skin needs now I'm getting a bit older, what I need to look for, and what is just marketing bs。 It's most well explained and referenced。 Although that does make the woo food advice even stranger。 4。5 starsSome of the earlier chapters are taken word for words from her blog, which I'd already read, and there were a couple of pages about food/nutrition which were complete hokum - but otherwise this was a really useful read。 I feel much better informed about what my skin needs now I'm getting a bit older, what I need to look for, and what is just marketing bs。 It's most well explained and referenced。 Although that does make the woo food advice even stranger。 。。。more

Learnt so much from this book, definitely upping my skincare game now!

Caroline Hirons has a wonderful knack for simplifying skin care concepts。 I was a beauty editor for three years, and frankly felt burnt out on the topic, but this streamlined back-to-basics has reined me back in。 Her book is a solid reference to have on hand—it did leave me with questions that go beyond the basics (also I really wanted her to dish more industry gossip, but she was too dignified for that!), so hopefully she’ll write a follow up!

Fantastic book for anyone trying to understand skin care more。 One I will refer back to time and again。

Saw this at my local library and was initially quite excited to learn some "no-nonsense" advice (or at least helpful tips) for my problematic, aging skin。 But as many other reviews mention, the actual information was repetitive and/or vague, with few practical takeaways。 I was disappointed in the few product recommendations, esp。 for an ultra-calming cleanser she lists for sensitive skin, only to read reviews (on other sites) that mention it contains botanicals known to aggravate rosacea。 I get Saw this at my local library and was initially quite excited to learn some "no-nonsense" advice (or at least helpful tips) for my problematic, aging skin。 But as many other reviews mention, the actual information was repetitive and/or vague, with few practical takeaways。 I was disappointed in the few product recommendations, esp。 for an ultra-calming cleanser she lists for sensitive skin, only to read reviews (on other sites) that mention it contains botanicals known to aggravate rosacea。 I get that product recommendations are tricky, because everyone's skin reacts so differently to products。 Which is why a more extensive list of options and intel on ingredients would have been helpful。 Likewise, she has a section at the back of the book listing various brands and beauty sources, but her one-liner description for each entry left me still wondering what was worthwhile or a waste of my time and money to investigate。 Coming from a "beauty industry insider," as she claims, it was still not very helpful。If you want to read this, check out your local library。 It's not worth the money to buy。 。。。more

2。5 Great tips and tricks and information about skincare but I didn’t find much that I hadn’t already read on Caroline’s blog or heard when she’s been interviewed。 What I did enjoy was that she actually narrated the audiobook herself making it feel a lot more personal, as she’s super passionate about the topic。

Really nice bit of light reading。 To be honest it was sali Hughes that opened my eyes to the world of beauty 4 years ago when I read pretty honest, but this was a brilliant reminder and much more in depth on the actual Skincare side of things, caroline is much more of a master at Skincare whereas sali gives a good overall insight to all aspects of self care。 I'd say read both。 Why not。 Edit** beware, you will splurge on products after reading, or in my case, during。 Really nice bit of light reading。 To be honest it was sali Hughes that opened my eyes to the world of beauty 4 years ago when I read pretty honest, but this was a brilliant reminder and much more in depth on the actual Skincare side of things, caroline is much more of a master at Skincare whereas sali gives a good overall insight to all aspects of self care。 I'd say read both。 Why not。 Edit** beware, you will splurge on products after reading, or in my case, during。 。。。more

The book that really will make you a skincare expertI really liked this book。 Well worth a read if you want to improve your skin。 Good advice delivered with dollops of humour and a chance to u understand a bit about how the marketing hype works。

As someone who has always struggled with their skin, this book was perfect for learning more about skin types and products。 I love that it’s inclusive and it is easy to read and informative。

I love investing in skin care, researching products, changing up my skin care routine etc。 So to have all the information I need broken down into nice, easy digestible sections is perfect。Will definitely be encouraging my friends and family to read this book!

Repetitive and hard to follow。 The e-book formatting didn’t do it any favors。 Lots of information, but not stitched together in a way that synthesizes it。 For example, she gives lots of product recommendations, but doesn’t tell you the type of product each one is, or roughly what price bracket it’s in。 The most useful takeaway for me was: “A common mistake when treating dry, dehydrated or parched skin is to apply a thick layer of moisturiser。 This is akin to applying a thick layer of cold butter Repetitive and hard to follow。 The e-book formatting didn’t do it any favors。 Lots of information, but not stitched together in a way that synthesizes it。 For example, she gives lots of product recommendations, but doesn’t tell you the type of product each one is, or roughly what price bracket it’s in。 The most useful takeaway for me was: “A common mistake when treating dry, dehydrated or parched skin is to apply a thick layer of moisturiser。 This is akin to applying a thick layer of cold butter to cold toast。 It won’t penetrate – it will sit on the surface of the skin and/or roll off。 Don’t waste your product。 Apply just enough moisturiser on top of your oil or serum to give comfort to your skin。 Wait a little while, spritz again, then reapply a little moisturiser。 [。。。] If you’re not wearing makeup, you can repeat thin layers of moisturiser throughout the day。” 。。。more

This book is good for reference。 If you read it from cover to cover however, the structure is a bit off: some terms are mentioned many times before they finally get explained。 The structure also makes for lots of repetition and even some contradictions。 Because of all this, I would say some basic knowledge comes in handy, so you can follow Hirons from the start while selecting the advice that works for you。 And I think that matches the prime audience for which this book was written, because it d This book is good for reference。 If you read it from cover to cover however, the structure is a bit off: some terms are mentioned many times before they finally get explained。 The structure also makes for lots of repetition and even some contradictions。 Because of all this, I would say some basic knowledge comes in handy, so you can follow Hirons from the start while selecting the advice that works for you。 And I think that matches the prime audience for which this book was written, because it doesn't go extremely in-depth on most topics either。 Personally, I could keep up while still learning some new stuff from this book and I finally got over my reluctance (fear) to try out retinoids/vitamin A, so that's a win。 The main thing I missed though, is that I would have preferred for the final chapter on ingredient lists to be more elaborate, in a way similar to how AHAs/BHAs/PHA were explained, because that was very informative and actually helps to make the right choices for your own skin。 。。。more

Re-read from when it came out。Very accessible and a good physical version of everything on her blog。 BUT as a decade-ish long follower of Hirons I don’t feel like I learnt anything from the book。

Karina

Recommended for all skincare noobs who are also interested in science and smart cosmetology/chemical terms。 It would be also a good gift for teenagers so they won’t harm their skin in the crusade against pimples。 I’ve listened to the audiobook read by the author who keeps it entertaining, fun and low key sarcastic。

Christine

I thought this was a well organized version of Caroline’s blog。 I did learn a few things about skincare, particularly the order in which to apply items, but overall I found it to be largely opinion focused over a more science or medical based approach。 This isn’t to say facts are lacking, but there is a lot of “I don’t like this” versus “studies have shown” type of chapters。

Kate Woollard

Very insightful and honest。 I did originally buy the e book but found i wanted to refer back to other sections often so also purchased the hard copy。

Caroline Hirons is the best! If you want to learn more about your skin and learn how to navigate skincare with no BS, read 👏 this 👏 book!

Skincare is my latest pandemic hobby。 Hirons is a great resource for cutting through the marketing garbage and finding the right products for your skin。 I appreciate her distain for trends not rooted in science and evidence。 And how many celebrity skincare lines does the world really need? Since we are all unique individuals, finding the right skincare is a bit of trial and error。 This is the part that i need to get over。 I would love to be told the "right" solution and move on with my life。 I b Skincare is my latest pandemic hobby。 Hirons is a great resource for cutting through the marketing garbage and finding the right products for your skin。 I appreciate her distain for trends not rooted in science and evidence。 And how many celebrity skincare lines does the world really need? I really enjoyed this book, super informal and education but still that Caroline humour you get from her videos and blogs。 I find myself dipping in and out-just beware you will want to raise your skincare budget and buy a lot of products after the recommendations from the book!

I found it hard to decide when to mark this book as 'read'。 It isn't the type of non-fiction you read every word of (no point me reading information about what to do in your 40s when I'm 23, and no way in hell am I reading the entire Glossary)。 I feel now that I have read all I need to, so can give it a review! This is the skin care bible。 There is no other information I will ever need, and I will be referencing it for every skin care decision I make from this day onwards。 Caroline explains every I found it hard to decide when to mark this book as 'read'。 It isn't the type of non-fiction you read every word of (no point me reading information about what to do in your 40s when I'm 23, and no way in hell am I reading the entire Glossary)。 I feel now that I have read all I need to, so can give it a review! This is the skin care bible。 There is no other information I will ever need, and I will be referencing it for every skin care decision I make from this day onwards。 Caroline explains everything in a way a novice like me can understand whilst still being in depth。 She covers everything you could ever need to know about, from a skin care routine to what to do when you have no running water。 There are useful pictures, and reccommendations for where to start。 She discusses everything in relation to age, skin type, skin condition and other factors where applicable。 I appreciated the inclusion of us disabled people as well! It was refreshing to see an expert recognise that a 10 step routine isn't achievable for everyone due to physical conditions, and also reccommend ways you can make it work for you - the bare minimum。Only one criticism - anyone who calls sugar and carbs the devil has to get a star knocked off for me。 If you aren't a nutritionist, don't comment on food。Now excuse me while I go place a boots order and feel ashamed of the fact I haven't worn SPF since the summer。 。。。more

Educational book with simple breakdowns, explanation & theories around skin care。 Very easy to understand。 If you needed to refer back to a certain concern or other information then it is laid out in an excellent way which makes it quick and easy to find what you need。 Before purchasing I researched the book and saw alot some discussions around the fact the book is made up of already published blog posts。 I did not fact check this, however, if you prefer reading on a kindle/electronic device it Educational book with simple breakdowns, explanation & theories around skin care。 Very easy to understand。 If you needed to refer back to a certain concern or other information then it is laid out in an excellent way which makes it quick and easy to find what you need。 Before purchasing I researched the book and saw alot some discussions around the fact the book is made up of already published blog posts。 I did not fact check this, however, if you prefer reading on a kindle/electronic device it may be worth checking this out。 I personally prefer the book format which is also easy to refer back to when needed。Personally, I did not like the writing style - it is written in a more modern way (like a blog) and the writer is very direct/too familiar。 I did also find that the book was repetitive in parts。 。。。more

I'm so used to following her on YouTube, Instagram and her blog that I kinda know her advice and tips like they're the back of my hand 🙈 definitely worth a read。 Pssst: combine this book and "The Budget Dermatologist" on youtube, you are set for life (at least on the skincare front)。 I love this book! I learnt a few really helpful things about ingredients in skin but I hated much of the book it is simply not true that sugar is easy to give up, its not helpful to tell people who have made an ethical decision not to eat animals that planet based omega is not as good as fish and surely we are not suggesting 20 year olds get 'baby botox' ??
