Listening Length: 13 hours and 26 minutes

Based on the best-selling, award-winning graphic novel series Locke & Key - written by acclaimed suspense novelist Joe Hill (NOS4A2Horns) and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez - this multicast, fully dramatized audio production brings the images and words to life。

A brutal and tragic event drives the Locke family from their home in California to the relative safety of their ancestral estate in Lovecraft, Massachusetts, an old house with powerful keys and fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them。 As siblings Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode Locke discover the secrets of the old house, they also find that it's home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all。。。。

Featuring performances by Haley Joel Osment (EntourageThe Sixth Sense), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Kate Mulgrew (Orange Is the New BlackStar Trek: Voyager), Joe Hill, Gabriel Rodriguez, and Stephen King (The Stand11-22-63), as well as a cast of more than 50 voice actors, this audio production preserves the heart-stopping impact of the graphic novel's astounding artwork through the use of richly imagined sound design and a powerful original score。

*Locke & Key contains explicit language and adult situations。

I enjoyed this an awful lot, surprisingly。 I wasn't sure listening without having read the graphic novels would work, thinking it would turn out to be very confusing, but actually it wasn't。 I think it was all very well done and I found it easier to follow than Gaiman's The Sandman and I'd read the graphic novels of those!All-in-all it was an enjoyable few hours。 I enjoyed this an awful lot, surprisingly。 I wasn't sure listening without having read the graphic novels would work, thinking it would turn out to be very confusing, but actually it wasn't。 I think it was all very well done and I found it easier to follow than Gaiman's The Sandman and I'd read the graphic novels of those!All-in-all it was an enjoyable few hours。 。。。more

Locke & Key is an awesome amalgamation of horrifying fantasy and mysterious Young Adult fiction that will grip you, thrill you and throw you spinning headfirst into the terrifying imagination of Joe Hill。Let me begin with specifying that this review is based on the Audible Original audiodrama Locke & Key, written by Joe Hill。 I realize, in hindsight, that though I had heard of Locke & Key before (and obviously became interested enough to grab a copy of this when I saw it on Audible), I was not a Locke & Key is an awesome amalgamation of horrifying fantasy and mysterious Young Adult fiction that will grip you, thrill you and throw you spinning headfirst into the terrifying imagination of Joe Hill。Let me begin with specifying that this review is based on the Audible Original audiodrama Locke & Key, written by Joe Hill。 I realize, in hindsight, that though I had heard of Locke & Key before (and obviously became interested enough to grab a copy of this when I saw it on Audible), I was not aware that it was a series of graphic novels, and not a standalone book。 And this work, which I ended up with, is a completely separate work again, featuring a full cast of voice actors and entirely unique plot。The premise of Locke & Key (any installment or version as far as I’m aware) is incredibly exciting。 It’s about the Locke family and their ancestral home, Key House, where they through generations have been living as guardians over the doors and the keys。You see, keys can do magical and terrifying things in Key House。 Depending on which one you have hold of, you can change how you look, gaze into your own mind, or open portals to demonic dimensions。 Among many other things…Such powers rarely come without consequence。In this Locke & Key installement we follow Tyler, Kinsey, and Body, siblings whose father has just been murdered, as they move back to their ancestral home of Key House to live with their uncle。 Full of grief and sorrow, they learn what it truly means to be a Locke – the exciting magical part of it alongside all the horrors。Honestly – even though I didn’t really know what format this was – Locke & Key was just as good as I had hoped。 The premise is really cool and opens up for some very exciting storytelling, with the siblings findings key that are able to take them in a myriad of different directions。 I definitely want to pick up the graphic novels and experience this in the intended format。Audiodramas can be very hit and miss for me, and though this was great, I notice that I sometimes miss the exposition you get from a proper reading of an audiobook。 It’s difficult to keep track of where we are, beyond the occasional announcements, like: “Later that evening, in Body’s room。” Also, even though it should be easier to separate characters when everyone is done by a separate voice actors, I often find it more difficult。 Sure, I can hear that there are two people talking, but a few chapters later I might not remember who’s who and if that character who suddenly came in from the sideline had been there before。Anyway – terrific Young Adult horror story based on a very exciting premise。 I definitely need to catch those graphic novels – oh! – and there’s a show as well? If it’s as good as this, it’s going to be awesome, I’m sure。 。。。more

Locke & key, the graphic novel, is awesome, 5 stars。 This audiobook version leaves a lot to be desired。 The performances were good, but you miss a lot of subtle looks and things that don't adapt well to audio by listening to just this。 If you are able to, read the graphic novel instead。 Locke & key, the graphic novel, is awesome, 5 stars。 This audiobook version leaves a lot to be desired。 The performances were good, but you miss a lot of subtle looks and things that don't adapt well to audio by listening to just this。 If you are able to, read the graphic novel instead。 。。。more

I watched the first series on Netflix and enjoyed that。 I knew that it was written initially as a graphic novel and thought that it would be interesting to listen to what I thought was going to be the book version。If you are expecting a fully fleshed out book, then you will be disappointed。 The concept for the production was certainly interesting but I don't think the execution was very good at all。 It sounded a lot like I was just listening to the audio of a tv show with the occasional narratio I watched the first series on Netflix and enjoyed that。 I knew that it was written initially as a graphic novel and thought that it would be interesting to listen to what I thought was going to be the book version。If you are expecting a fully fleshed out book, then you will be disappointed。 The concept for the production was certainly interesting but I don't think the execution was very good at all。 It sounded a lot like I was just listening to the audio of a tv show with the occasional narration thrown in, rather than a book or even radio play。 There was way too much music going on, and especially music without any exposition or where we were left to supposedly imagine what was happening, but then when the voices came back in what had happened wasn't explained or was different from what you'd thought happened。The age that this is aimed at is far different to the Netflix series and should come with an appropriate warning。 There is some extremely and unnecessary bad language in this。Not very good, would not recommend。 。。。more

I loved the comics when I was younger。 The Netflix adaptation was disappointing。 So when I heard there was an。 audio drama adaptation of the comic I downloaded it。 It's well done and true to the comics for the most part。 I loved the comics when I was younger。 The Netflix adaptation was disappointing。 So when I heard there was an。 audio drama adaptation of the comic I downloaded it。 It's well done and true to the comics for the most part。 。。。more

I love love LOVE the premise of this story: After school counselor Rendell Locke is murdered during a horrifying encounter his widow and three children move across the country to the ancestral home of his family。 Locke House is big and old and – the children start discovering – has scattered throughout it many mysterious keys。 Each one, it seems, unlocks a unique skill or power that is amazing, often fun and potentially dangerous。This specific review (and my rating) is based on the Audible audio I love love LOVE the premise of this story: After school counselor Rendell Locke is murdered during a horrifying encounter his widow and three children move across the country to the ancestral home of his family。 Locke House is big and old and – the children start discovering – has scattered throughout it many mysterious keys。 Each one, it seems, unlocks a unique skill or power that is amazing, often fun and potentially dangerous。This specific review (and my rating) is based on the Audible audio production of this work。Originally written and published as a serial graphic novel collection, I think I ultimately did myself a disservice by first experiencing this tale through an audio presentation。 The adaptation opted for what felt almost like a straight read-through of the comic, which made this full-cast recording feel very much like a radio play, with fewer sound effects。 Although it boasts some decent musical scoring and fantastically dramatic voice acting, it didn't feel like it introduced any additional narration。 Now, my experience with graphic novels is that dialogue is only one key component of the storytelling, and it needs the accompanying illustrations for the whole presentation to be clear。 In this audiobook, hearing only the dialogue without narration to replace the art from the panels in the book, the story seemed to feel incomplete。 I felt like I was missing so much of the action and nuance that any complaints I might have about the actual movement of the plot feel unfair。 Much of the wonder of the magic of the keys was still very clear, and I admire the way the creators addressed the grief and loneliness in the characters lives。I'm looking forward to reading the original publication at some point。 I also enjoyed binge watching the Netflix adaptation (and really appreciated the makeover that Mrs Locke received, which wasn't too heavy handed but made her a much stronger character)。 I suspect I'll enjoy the graphic novels most of all。 。。。more

This is an audio of a graphic novel, rather than a text story。 There are sound effects, multiple voice actors, and music。 It's different。 I found it a little difficult to follow who was speaking sometimes。 The story is creative and interesting。 This is an audio of a graphic novel, rather than a text story。 There are sound effects, multiple voice actors, and music。 It's different。 I found it a little difficult to follow who was speaking sometimes。 The story is creative and interesting。 。。。more

DNF。。。 this audiobook was hard to follow。 The voice acting was good, but the story was too confusing without the visual element。 If you previously read the comic book, you would probably enjoy this audiobook more。

Initially, I wasn't sure what an audiobook of a graphic novels series was going to be like but I was pleasantly surprised。 Aside from the 30-sec musical breaks between scenes, I actually really enjoyed the dramatization of Locke & Key。 I don't recommend listening to it if you haven't read the graphic novel first because you miss out on a lot of what makes this series horrifying and creepy but for those who have read it and want to experience listening to it, I definitely recommend the audio dram Initially, I wasn't sure what an audiobook of a graphic novels series was going to be like but I was pleasantly surprised。 Aside from the 30-sec musical breaks between scenes, I actually really enjoyed the dramatization of Locke & Key。 I don't recommend listening to it if you haven't read the graphic novel first because you miss out on a lot of what makes this series horrifying and creepy but for those who have read it and want to experience listening to it, I definitely recommend the audio dramatization。 。。。more

I would call this a very young YA story。 It tries to ramp up the "fright" factor but I don't think anyone over age 13 would be all that scared。 And despite the sophisticated audio production (different actors protray each character including stints by Kate Mulgrew and Tatiana Muslaney, lots of sound effects, music) ghosts aren't as scary in audio form as they are visually。 Parts of this were just people screaming and yelling and I couldn't figure out what was going on。 I got about halfway throug I would call this a very young YA story。 It tries to ramp up the "fright" factor but I don't think anyone over age 13 would be all that scared。 And despite the sophisticated audio production (different actors protray each character including stints by Kate Mulgrew and Tatiana Muslaney, lots of sound effects, music) ghosts aren't as scary in audio form as they are visually。 Parts of this were just people screaming and yelling and I couldn't figure out what was going on。 I got about halfway through this and decided to stop when I realized I didn't care。 。。。more

I both enjoyed and did not enjoy this read。 It may have been the audio drama version to which I listened。 While entertaining, there was something 'off' about it, which I am guessing is due to the translation from comic book to audio drama。 I love audio dramas but the problems here are the ambiguous sound effects, random screaming of characters, and unrealistic portrayal of people's acceptance of magic in an otherwise very real, very gritty world。 A standard audio book translation would be better I both enjoyed and did not enjoy this read。 It may have been the audio drama version to which I listened。 While entertaining, there was something 'off' about it, which I am guessing is due to the translation from comic book to audio drama。 I love audio dramas but the problems here are the ambiguous sound effects, random screaming of characters, and unrealistic portrayal of people's acceptance of magic in an otherwise very real, very gritty world。 A standard audio book translation would be better, as it would display Joe Hill's tremendous writing style more in depth (such as the excellent novel "Heart-Shaped Box")。 The story overall was intriguing and I was genuinely surprised by some of the twists。 I liked the Lovecraftian elements, despite their sparseness。 。。。more

I enjoy audio dramas, but I felt as though this one wasn't as well produced as other ones I've listened to。 Maybe it was the story, maybe it was the translation from graphic novel to audio drama。 I was enjoying it at the start, but it was mainly due to having enjoyed the tv series。 The tv series has changed the sequence of events that occur in the book。 It probably made more sense for the show。 I probably would have been a little bit lost with the book if I hadn't watched the show first。 Maybe I I enjoy audio dramas, but I felt as though this one wasn't as well produced as other ones I've listened to。 Maybe it was the story, maybe it was the translation from graphic novel to audio drama。 I was enjoying it at the start, but it was mainly due to having enjoyed the tv series。 The tv series has changed the sequence of events that occur in the book。 It probably made more sense for the show。 I probably would have been a little bit lost with the book if I hadn't watched the show first。 Maybe I'll read the graphic novels someday。 It seems unlikely though。 I'll watch the show and enjoy the story that way。 。。。more

Joe Hill is Stephen King's son, so it's inevitable although possibly unfair that a comparison will be made。 This is the second Hill book I've listened to after Nos4a2 and I fear they both suffer from meandering plotlines。 When I read a King novel I'm gripped from start to finish。 In contrast Hill is quite hard work with many competing subplots。 He also seems to have a weird fixation on young women with coloured hair as a similar character pops up both in this novel and Nos4a2。 I normally love fu Joe Hill is Stephen King's son, so it's inevitable although possibly unfair that a comparison will be made。 This is the second Hill book I've listened to after Nos4a2 and I fear they both suffer from meandering plotlines。 When I read a King novel I'm gripped from start to finish。 In contrast Hill is quite hard work with many competing subplots。 He also seems to have a weird fixation on young women with coloured hair as a similar character pops up both in this novel and Nos4a2。 I normally love full cast productions but this is truly the war and peace of comic book adaptations。 I'm sorry to say that I fear his famous moniker resulted in insufficient editing。 Judging by the other comments on here the graphic novels are far superior so I will try them。 King manages to talk about childhood experience in a way that is all too painful for adults。 In Joe Hill's books the description of child and adolescent experiences remain just that and he struggles to convince the reader to feel the experience for themselves in the way that King does so deftly。 。。。more

I feel bad for only giving this 3 stars because quite clearly a lot of work has gone into the production of this。 It isn't just a audiobook, but a dramtisation。 Along the way however, I got a little lost, and I couldn't quite picture who was talking and what exactly was happening。 I think if you were to read the graphic novels first (and like them) then you would absolutely love this。 Cameos from absolutely everyone including Hill, and King。 I feel bad for only giving this 3 stars because quite clearly a lot of work has gone into the production of this。 It isn't just a audiobook, but a dramtisation。 Along the way however, I got a little lost, and I couldn't quite picture who was talking and what exactly was happening。 I think if you were to read the graphic novels first (and like them) then you would absolutely love this。 Cameos from absolutely everyone including Hill, and King。 。。。more

I listened to this book on Audible。 It was awesome。 I started off reading the comics but then did this listen。 It was brutal, awesome and well done。 The adaptation from Comic to Book to audio was really well done! This。。。was。。。amazing to listen to! This blows away the Netflix show。 There are a few moments of action here and there that are hard to decipher what exactly is going on but the narrator comes right back to recap what happened。 Over 50 voices including Joe Hill and his papa, Mr。 King。 Fantastic! It reminded me of listening to old radio programs with my dad on NPR。 If only more audiobooks were put together with this much production。 Wow!

Enjoyed every minute of this audible dramatization of this story。 Well done and I had trouble taking breaks from reading/listening because of the anticipation of what would happen next。 Good ending to this story and I look forward to reading more by this author, so creative and yet so different from his fathers work。
