Summary

Internationally bestselling author Val McDermid is one of our finest crime writers, whose gripping, impeccably plotted novels have garnered millions of readers worldwide。 In her latest, Out of Bounds, she delivers a riveting cold case novel featuring detective Karen Pirie。

When a teenage joyrider crashes a stolen car and ends up in a coma, a routine DNA test reveals a connection to an unsolved murder from twenty-two years before。 Finding the answer to the cold case should be straightforward。 But it’s as twisted as the DNA helix itself。

Meanwhile, Karen finds herself irresistibly drawn to another mystery that she has no business investigating, a mystery that has its roots in a terrorist bombing two decades ago。 And again, she finds that nothing is as it seems。

Val McDermid is definitely one of my favourite authors。 Her characters are so rich and real, and her setting of the scenery makes me long to see Scotland。 This book is another fantastic part of the Karen Pirie story。 I highly recommend it。

Good story as ever。 Pacy and engaging but, as usual, marred by frequent snide political jibes。

Excellent

The cases were interesting but they went a bit too slow。 I had to keep putting the book down cuz I was getting bored。

The crime novels that I enjoy most are well written, set in a place with which I may be somewhat familiar, have quirky but intelligent characters, and are filled with interesting historical (sometimes arcane) details about law or forensic studies。 Val McDermid’s series with cold case detective Karen Pirie more than meets all these requirements。 Out of Bounds, McDermid’s 30th novel, is an expertly plotted page-turner, and I delighted in following DI Pirie through the streets of Edinburgh and Lond The crime novels that I enjoy most are well written, set in a place with which I may be somewhat familiar, have quirky but intelligent characters, and are filled with interesting historical (sometimes arcane) details about law or forensic studies。 Val McDermid’s series with cold case detective Karen Pirie more than meets all these requirements。 Out of Bounds, McDermid’s 30th novel, is an expertly plotted page-turner, and I delighted in following DI Pirie through the streets of Edinburgh and London。 。。。more

Too much filler and back story。 Not enough plot。

Karen Pirie as always doing things her own way which grates with her superiors but also adds to the tension。 I really enjoyed it。

Love Val McDermid and this book is no exception, I couldn't put it down。 Unlike some authors each book is still high quality with interesting stories that are fresh and full of twists。 She's very simular to Ian Rankin who I also enjoy reading。 however I do prefer Val McDermid as I think she is a bit darker and doesn't hold back。 Being Scottish myself, I love the connection to home and local dialect。My first book I ever read was The Distant Echo, which is the first book of the series and is my fa Love Val McDermid and this book is no exception, I couldn't put it down。 Unlike some authors each book is still high quality with interesting stories that are fresh and full of twists。 She's very simular to Ian Rankin who I also enjoy reading。 however I do prefer Val McDermid as I think she is a bit darker and doesn't hold back。 Being Scottish myself, I love the connection to home and local dialect。My first book I ever read was The Distant Echo, which is the first book of the series and is my favourite Val McDermid book to date。 This book was great and I could hardly put it down。 You've got to love Karen Pirie。 I hope there's going to be another book in the series。 Four stars 😃🙌 。。。more

I read #3 in the Inspector Karen Pirie mysteries a couple of years ago and finally found another, not #1 as I planned, but #4。McDermid is a newish author to me but I really like her style of writing, the reinforcing of some key information because there are many characters in her stories and usually a couple of plots so it's easy to lose connection with some of the people。 Because there were two plots in this story to follow, McDermid did a fantastic job of clearly defining the two which made it I read #3 in the Inspector Karen Pirie mysteries a couple of years ago and finally found another, not #1 as I planned, but #4。McDermid is a newish author to me but I really like her style of writing, the reinforcing of some key information because there are many characters in her stories and usually a couple of plots so it's easy to lose connection with some of the people。 Because there were two plots in this story to follow, McDermid did a fantastic job of clearly defining the two which made it easier to follow each sad story of murder。 Her writing just flows along with one wanting to keep reading without interruptions。I really like both Karen and her only other staff member of the Historic Cases Dept, Sgt Jason Murray who tries his best to be of help and to learn more; Karen has great patience with him。 Not only does DCI Perie have to deal with the old and sometimes new cases, she deals with much animosity from her senior staff who feel she treads where she shouldn't, that she is seeking fame, having unnecessary tests on DNA finds, but she keeps pursuing clues and people until she does solve the case despite the the roadblocks she meets from staff。Now to find another one of McDermid's books at my favourite thrift store or library。 。。。more

Thoroughly enjoyable。 A really good twisting together of several strands。

I do enjoy the Karen Pirie series。 She is intelligent, strong, and continues to develop over the series, if memory serves me correctly she had few friends or confidantes in the first couple of books but her network continues to grow and support her and she is getting better at letting them。

This book was a solid, fantastic mystery read。 Thankfully, this seems to be a series that can be read out of order, and this was my first introduction to Scottish detective Karen Pirie。 As this book opens, Karen is back at work as a cold case detective following the loss of the man who was both her professional and romantic partner。McDermid's portrayal of Karen Pirie was what made this book truly stand out for me。 Right away we can see Karen's intense curiosity and intellect, but we can also tel This book was a solid, fantastic mystery read。 Thankfully, this seems to be a series that can be read out of order, and this was my first introduction to Scottish detective Karen Pirie。 As this book opens, Karen is back at work as a cold case detective following the loss of the man who was both her professional and romantic partner。McDermid's portrayal of Karen Pirie was what made this book truly stand out for me。 Right away we can see Karen's intense curiosity and intellect, but we can also tell that she is grieving and somewhat adrift。 She's not a perfect character, but she realizes her shortcomings, growing as a person throughout the book。 Her relationship with her younger and sometimes slightly dense work partner develops a lot over the course of the story, and was a part of the book I rather liked。 Karen's colleague may not have her smarts, but by the end of the novel, we can see that he has something to bring to the table and the two start to truly become a team。The initial mystery in this book starts as a young joyrider steals a car and causes a terrible accident。 His blood test results come back to the unsolved murder of a young woman that took place before he was even born。 Karen leads readers through the labyrinth of Scottish police and courts in her quest to find relatives of this young man who may have ties to the crime。 Along the way, her investigations lead her to a suicide that may not really be one, which has ties to a sabotaged airplane crash in the 90s。The plotting is intricate and complicated。 However, even if Karen Pirie does seem to have an impressive ability to have friends with just the right weirdly specialized skills, I did enjoy seeing the pieces come together in these cases as well as getting glimpses into the lead characters' personalties and their world。 I may be reading the series out of order, but I definitely want to keep reading it。 。。。more

It was a good enough read, although not all that gripping。 Especially compared to the usual VM standard。The cases didn't have the usual darkness or shocking factors to them, however this book was more about life for KP after the ending of the previous book。 Hopefully this means that the next book in the series will be back to normal。 It was a good enough read, although not all that gripping。 Especially compared to the usual VM standard。The cases didn't have the usual darkness or shocking factors to them, however this book was more about life for KP after the ending of the previous book。 Hopefully this means that the next book in the series will be back to normal。 。。。more

I have read all of the Tony Hill/Carol Jordan novels and I absolutely loved that series。 McDermid has no boundaries when writing crime but this book was somewhat tamer than those。 The crimes are somewhat pedestrian but it does not matter when McDermid takes us deeply inside each characters life and personality。 She knows how we think and what we desire so her characters are completely believable。 I took a while to sort out who was who as the two crimes were discussed side by side。 I have not rea I have read all of the Tony Hill/Carol Jordan novels and I absolutely loved that series。 McDermid has no boundaries when writing crime but this book was somewhat tamer than those。 The crimes are somewhat pedestrian but it does not matter when McDermid takes us deeply inside each characters life and personality。 She knows how we think and what we desire so her characters are completely believable。 I took a while to sort out who was who as the two crimes were discussed side by side。 I have not ready any other of the Karen Pirie books so I am looking forward to finding those。 。。。more

This is a very well written detective novel。 In this series, Karen Pirie is an Historic Cases investigator。 This time she is investigating both the unsolved murder of a young lady outside a bar and a plane crash from 1994。 The later ties into another recent homicide that was previously ruled as a suicide。 There is lots going on and McDermid is able to keep it all interesting。 I came out of this book feeling as if I was following Karen Pirie around as she lived her life。

Nurul

Just okay。 I think this book will be much better if DCI Karen only investigates one case。
