Summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson, Words of Radiance, Book Two of the Stormlight Archive, continues the immersive fantasy epic that The Way of Kings began。

Expected by his enemies to die the miserable death of a military slave, Kaladin survived to be given command of the royal bodyguards, a controversial first for a low-status "darkeyes。" Now he must protect the king and Dalinar from every common peril as well as the distinctly uncommon threat of the Assassin, all while secretly struggling to master remarkable new powers that are somehow linked to his honorspren, Syl。

The Assassin, Szeth, is active again, murdering rulers all over the world of Roshar, using his baffling powers to thwart every bodyguard and elude all pursuers。 Among his prime targets is Highprince Dalinar, widely considered the power behind the Alethi throne。 His leading role in the war would seem reason enough, but the Assassin's master has much deeper motives。

Brilliant but troubled Shallan strives along a parallel path。 Despite being broken in ways she refuses to acknowledge, she bears a terrible burden: to somehow prevent the return of the legendary Voidbringers and the civilization-ending Desolation that will follow。 The secrets she needs can be found at the Shattered Plains, but just arriving there proves more difficult than she could have imagined。

Meanwhile, at the heart of the Shattered Plains, the Parshendi are making an epochal decision。 Hard pressed by years of Alethi attacks, their numbers ever shrinking, they are convinced by their war leader, Eshonai, to risk everything on a desperate gamble with the very supernatural forces they once fled。 The possible consequences for Parshendi and humans alike, indeed, for Roshar itself, are as dangerous as they are incalculable。

Incredible。Bit of a back story。 A year and a half ago The Way of Kings was my first ever Audiobook (and my first book in a few years) I binged through it and loved it。 My mistake was immediately starting this。 I got about half way and felt burnt out。The other day, on a whim I decided to listen to this again from where I left off。 Amazingly I didn't feel lost, I could pretty much remember the world, characters and what had happened up until this point。 It's definitely not my great memory, it's th Incredible。Bit of a back story。 A year and a half ago The Way of Kings was my first ever Audiobook (and my first book in a few years) I binged through it and loved it。 My mistake was immediately starting this。 I got about half way and felt burnt out。The other day, on a whim I decided to listen to this again from where I left off。 Amazingly I didn't feel lost, I could pretty much remember the world, characters and what had happened up until this point。 It's definitely not my great memory, it's the brilliant writing that allowed this。Anyway。 This is a fantastic sequel, the story really progresses here。 Like The Way of Kings it's a slow burn, but its really worth the effort。Almost made me repeat my mistake and jump straight into the next book。。。 。。。more

The Stormlight Archive so far lives up to every last bit of praise given to it。 Sanderson takes all he has learned about writing fantasy and produces an epic tale of real people with real problems facing all manner of unnerving conflicts。 Every time I try to predict where an arc is going, I'm wildly off - a great trend!Words of Radiance tells us Shallan's story, in addition to advancing the overall plot; and I honestly found it even more engaging than Kaladin's despite having a better idea where The Stormlight Archive so far lives up to every last bit of praise given to it。 Sanderson takes all he has learned about writing fantasy and produces an epic tale of real people with real problems facing all manner of unnerving conflicts。 Every time I try to predict where an arc is going, I'm wildly off - a great trend!Words of Radiance tells us Shallan's story, in addition to advancing the overall plot; and I honestly found it even more engaging than Kaladin's despite having a better idea where it would end up。 。。。more

I cannot wait to see what the repercussions will be after that impromptu assassination! I am really happy with this series。 The books are long but they are worth it!

Truly got no words。I need everyone I know to read this so I can talk to them in length about how much I love this series。My jaw might be perennially hanging until I can wrap my head around this one。

Sanderson keeps building on what was already amazing in the Way of Kings。

Long and slow, building a good story。 Last half is far better than the first half

Absolute AMAZING read through and through!Throughout the entire book I had goosebumps。 This book kept me on the edge of my seat and couldn’t have ended better than it did。

Again, pretty flawless。 There’s really nothing to criticize, and this suffers from nothing that sequels tend to suffer from。 If anything, it’s just more brilliant because all the characters we love from book 1 that are living their separate lives are now all together and interacting。 There’s twists, turns, and dialogue even better than the first。 Above all, the character work can’t be beat。

Words of Radiance takes place right after The Way of Kings。 I’m not going to go into detail about what this book is about because it will spoil what happened in The Way of Kings。 This book was just a chef’s kiss。 Even though I’ve only read two out of the four books, I’m just in love with this series, obsessed, and it’s now my favorite book series。 I cannot stop thinking about these characters。 I love that these characters have mental health issues and have to find ways to overcome them。 Sometime Words of Radiance takes place right after The Way of Kings。 I’m not going to go into detail about what this book is about because it will spoil what happened in The Way of Kings。 This book was just a chef’s kiss。 Even though I’ve only read two out of the four books, I’m just in love with this series, obsessed, and it’s now my favorite book series。 I cannot stop thinking about these characters。 I love that these characters have mental health issues and have to find ways to overcome them。 Sometimes it gets them in trouble because they aren’t really coping with it。 I love Kaladin with his broody, selfish self。 Shallan is becoming badass and starting to learn how to be and to be more assertive。 These characters are flawed and it makes them seem very human and real。 These books are just layered and it’s amazing。 There is conflict within themselves and with the Parshendi。 The characters learning about their magic is great too。 The world building is just getting better and better。 There was a lot of oh crap moments that made me want to continue reading on。 You guys really have to read this series! I can’t wait to read the novella and Oathbringer! 。。。more

I。 AM。 SCREAMING !!! Brandy Sandy is the fantasy genius of our time。 My mind melts when I try to comprehend how a human can come up with a story like this one and then pull it off brilliantly。

I stand by my opinion of the series after reading Words of Radiance - it is a good starter for people who are just starting out on epic fantasy。 The world-building is wonderful and different from all I've read before in the stony landscape and weird creatures, the magic is interesting。。。but the characters are a bit too light for me。 It's really readable and reads quickly, so you can immerse yourself in an epic fantasy without having to concentrate 200% on the plot。 However, as with the first boo I stand by my opinion of the series after reading Words of Radiance - it is a good starter for people who are just starting out on epic fantasy。 The world-building is wonderful and different from all I've read before in the stony landscape and weird creatures, the magic is interesting。。。but the characters are a bit too light for me。 It's really readable and reads quickly, so you can immerse yourself in an epic fantasy without having to concentrate 200% on the plot。 However, as with the first book and the "revelation" of Tien's fate, this book had the "revelation" of Shallan's mother's end that I felt was just too drawn out since you pretty much guess what happened at about halfway through。 So the BIG revelation is not so big at all。 Sanderson builds the anticipation up too much for all the hints he gives, so either, less anticipation or less hints。 I'd prefer less hints。Wit is still my favourite of the characters, since he is (somewhat) mysterious, while the others are not。 I'm kind of getting now why Sanderson finished WOT, SA has a really similar feel to it, but I wonder what I'd feel about the characters, should I re-read WOT now。 I might think the characters are a bit too light as well, so it could be just my age and records of reading a lot of (good and bad) fantasy。 。。。more

Absolutely amazing。 This book exceeded my expectations in so many ways。 I loved every minute of it and only wish I read it slower cause I never wanted it to end。

This is EPIC epic fantasy。Good Ol' Brand Sand™ takes advantage of the fact that book one is out of the way so we already know the characters and world building basics and dives into a story of massively epic proportions。 Despite the massive size, I was never bored by this, every page dedicated to deepening characaters, furthering the plot, or enriching the world building。I especially really loved the plotlines of Kaladin and Shallan here。 Shallan's plotline dived deep into her motivations and pa This is EPIC epic fantasy。Good Ol' Brand Sand™ takes advantage of the fact that book one is out of the way so we already know the characters and world building basics and dives into a story of massively epic proportions。 Despite the massive size, I was never bored by this, every page dedicated to deepening characaters, furthering the plot, or enriching the world building。I especially really loved the plotlines of Kaladin and Shallan here。 Shallan's plotline dived deep into her motivations and past proving her to be one of the most important players in this saga and an interesting character with a unique set of skills。 Kaladin's story actually surprised me with how relevant and complex it got。 It seems like a societal critique on how minorities are gaslit by those with power into thinking they aren't oppressed while also dealing with Kal's trauma and how that trauma is interwoven with his experience of being oppressed。 For me this entire storyline hit pretty deep。Then the way that his, Shallan's, and everyone else's storyline intersected was so fascinating especially with the expansions of the world building。 Any lesser author doing what this book does would be jumping the shark, but not Brand Sand™。 Brand Sand™ understands how to make the crazy make sense and logically fit with not only the plot of this series but the Cosmere as a whole。I look forward to reading not only the rest of this series, but more of the Cosmere itself。 There are a lot of connecting threads in this to other series and I want as full a picture as possible。 A shared universe, rich lore, characters to get deeply attached to, this is everything I wanted and more。 。。。more
