Summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews launches a brand new Hidden Legacy series, in which one woman must place her trust in a seductive, dangerous man who sets off an even more dangerous desire…

Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile case。 Nevada isn't sure she has the chops。 Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire。

Then she's kidnapped by Connor "Mad" Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers。 Torn between wanting to run or surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive。

Rogan's after the same target, so he needs Nevada。 But she's getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change。 And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world。

I swear, each new Ilona Andrews series I read turns into my favorite。 They just have a way of writing that makes a book exciting。 The fantasy elements in this series are unique, like Ilona Andrews other series。 The discovery of a way to introduce magic powers has created a power imbalance in the world, with the rich and powerful having magic and the average people being pawns。 It's definitely urban fantasy, but with the power imbalance it almost has a dystopian feel to it。 Of course, there's a l I swear, each new Ilona Andrews series I read turns into my favorite。 They just have a way of writing that makes a book exciting。 The fantasy elements in this series are unique, like Ilona Andrews other series。 The discovery of a way to introduce magic powers has created a power imbalance in the world, with the rich and powerful having magic and the average people being pawns。 It's definitely urban fantasy, but with the power imbalance it almost has a dystopian feel to it。 Of course, there's a love story subplot and I expected it to be a slow burn like other Ilona Andrews books I've read。 I wondered if I'd be able to take it, since I've been such a sucker for romance books lately。 I shouldn't have worried。。。 This book was hot。 And the crazy thing is there isn't any spice。 It's the conversations these two have! And the chemistry! Wonderful。 And the sass - *chef's kiss* perfection!I loved it! Can't wait for the rest! 。。。more

4。5 stars! I really liked this book and absolutely loved the chemistry between Nevada and Rogan! ❤️ My only complaint would be that there were multiple times in the book where a random piece of information was added in for the sake of advancing the plot。 It almost seemed as if the story wasn’t really planned out from the beginning and the author would just add in these random things to make the story make sense。 Aside from that though, I really enjoyed reading this book!

4。0This cover makes me think of cheesy erotica and based off the cover alone, I am honestly a little embarrassed in admitteding to having read the book。 That said, after seeing Ilona Andrews continually being praised on various internet forums, I decided to give Burn for Me a go。 Much to my pleasant surprise, Burn for Me is a perfect example of "Don't judge a book by the cover"。 I do think the corny artwork does the overarching story a disservice because instead of cheesy, steamy romance, I disc 4。0This cover makes me think of cheesy erotica and based off the cover alone, I am honestly a little embarrassed in admitteding to having read the book。 That said, after seeing Ilona Andrews continually being praised on various internet forums, I decided to give Burn for Me a go。 Much to my pleasant surprise, Burn for Me is a perfect example of "Don't judge a book by the cover"。 I do think the corny artwork does the overarching story a disservice because instead of cheesy, steamy romance, I discovered a fun and fast paced Urban Fantasy world, with the (pretty tame) romance being much more of a subplot than the driving force of the story。 Despite being "just" set in an alternate-reality Houston, the world building in this book was excellent。 The magic made sense both in its origins and in practical use。 I also really liked that Andrews wove in such diverse powers and particularly, telekinetics/telepaths into their magic system。 Telepathy and telekinesis a form of magic that can be tricky to pull off as it's a magic type that can often lead to overpowered, undefeatable characters。 Andrews though, managed to make it a power that was awe-inspiring and badass, but still balanced by some believable costs。 The characters in Burn for Me were also really well done。 Nevada was a great protagonist - smart, competent and there was consistency between what we were told about her vs her actions, which I really appreciated。 (N。B。 I find character consistency sometimes lacking in many Urban Fantasies or Fantasy-Romances。) The supporting characters were also a ton of fun and I loved the banter between Nevada and her family。 Actually, I really enjoyed the banter between Nevada and all characters。 Rogan himself was overall a decent anti-hero, though at times he felt a little bit more one dimensional compared to Nevada or some of the side characters。 Overall, Burn for Me really did exceed my expectations and I will go on to read Book 2 in the trilogy。 。。。more

I enjoyed this - but I reckon the voice actor made it more difficult for me to like。 Also because the whole time Rogan is referred to as Mad Rogan and。。。 that felt weird。 Whatever, this was still fun。 I will say though, what the heck with the epilogue?? (Spoiler ahead) talk about unreliable narrator。。。 way to have the worst motivation ever to ruin your son’s and cousin’s life。。。 what an arsehat。

Note: I'm aware that Illona Andrews is actually two people but I'm going to refer to them singularly for a lot of the review because it's easier。 I'll preface this by saying I'm biased; something about Illona Andrews's writing style and story crafting has always resonated with me。 There are very few of their books I've read and didn't like and I tend to forgive quite a bit with them so it may be warranted to take a star off for the average reader。To start with, this series already has heavy Kate Note: I'm aware that Illona Andrews is actually two people but I'm going to refer to them singularly for a lot of the review because it's easier。 I'll preface this by saying I'm biased; something about Illona Andrews's writing style and story crafting has always resonated with me。 There are very few of their books I've read and didn't like and I tend to forgive quite a bit with them so it may be warranted to take a star off for the average reader。To start with, this series already has heavy Kate Daniels vibes。 People familiar with the series will draw instant parallels between Kate and Nevada and Rogan and Curran。 The alternate history/future/present of this world is a little less intense than the one in the other series so there's less to acclimate to, but the transition is also a bit inconsistent。 Early in the book there's a claim that there are three major types of magic users, and then throughout the book we're introduced to a bunch of different people who don't really fit any of the three types。 Also the romance seems to be headed down exactly the same path as the previous one, though unlike with Kate, Nevada doesn't seem to have anything to put her on even footing with her powerful would-be paramour。 I'm hoping shows a bit more spine。 Andrews isn't known for writing swooning helpless women as protagonists but occasionally I feel like they cave too soon to what is objectively arrogant and predatory behavior。 Those are my major gripes for the most part but the rest of it is good。 Worldbuilding that does enough to evoke a sense of fantasy without needing a lot of infodumps, believable characters surrounding the protagonists with a lot of grey people who aren't immediately trope-y, and a good dose of humor throughout。 I also always like when Andrews's characters with "ultimates" cut loose; they have a way of writing those instances in a way that conveys giddy excitement when they're flexing and just wrecking house, but they're also able to highlight tense situations when those same people are facing a real challenge。 I'm going to continue with the series hoping some of the above gripes improve。 Unfortunately I'm probably going to read through the existing books before they finish the series。 。。。more

Maybe 3。5?I don't know。 This was quick and interesting and I really liked Nevada and (against my better judgment) I liked Mad Rogan too。 However, the villain was awful and ridiculous, and I feel like the author wrote in his "motivations" at the last minute; and it appears that the Bigger Bad also has similarly weak motivations。 Plus, the ending was super rushed, and felt both cliche and anti-climatic。 I probably won't continue with the series, but never say never。 Maybe 3。5?I don't know。 This was quick and interesting and I really liked Nevada and (against my better judgment) I liked Mad Rogan too。 However, the villain was awful and ridiculous, and I feel like the author wrote in his "motivations" at the last minute; and it appears that the Bigger Bad also has similarly weak motivations。 Plus, the ending was super rushed, and felt both cliche and anti-climatic。 I probably won't continue with the series, but never say never。 。。。more

As always the writing of Ilona Andrews is amazing。 This first book in the series made me crave book two and I am anxiously awaiting reading it and seeing where they take this。 When I finished I had to go back to a certain section and go thru that spot again and it hit me。 You will know when you know :) Definitely give this book a read。 And every time you see an Ilona Andrews book grab it and remember to start at the beginning of the series always!

4/5 stars! This book surprised me in so many ways。 From the cover and the title you would assume it was just another typical supernatural romance but it is a lot more than it。 I honestly would even go as far as to say it was 90% an action superhero novel than it was a romance。 I felt the book was really well written it was full of action and intrigue that kept me hooked on every page。 I loved Nevada she was a strong female lead who wasn’t embarrassed of her weaknesses her emotions。 She could be 4/5 stars! Boy did I have THOUGHTS while listening to this one so this is going to be a bit of a ramble。It was hard to tell who the love interest would be in the beginning, so I broke down and started googling things because I had opinions on things。 What I found was reassuring, but not by much。 I'm about 50% through the sequel now and I'm starting to warm up to Mad Rogan but I have issues with him。 He's going through a villain with a sad backstory ark which is fine and all but when your alias is "The Skur Boy did I have THOUGHTS while listening to this one so this is going to be a bit of a ramble。It was hard to tell who the love interest would be in the beginning, so I broke down and started googling things because I had opinions on things。 What I found was reassuring, but not by much。 I'm about 50% through the sequel now and I'm starting to warm up to Mad Rogan but I have issues with him。 He's going through a villain with a sad backstory ark which is fine and all but when your alias is "The Skurge of Mexico" should you have a redemption arch? There's a lot to unpack with him so I have mixed feelings about him。 I also can't tell how old he is in comparison to Nevada our heroine。 It's implied that he's older, but how much older isn't stated。 Relationships with older guys (10ish+ years) isn't really my thing。 It isn't a knock against the book, it just makes me less invested in the relationship。 He's a fine ally for Nevada, a bit Ranger like to her Stephanie Plum but like Ranger and Plum I'm not a big supporter of them having a relationship。 I do appreciate that Nevada realizes that he wants her and is making him earn it because she recognizes that he's bad for her in so many ways despite her wanting him back。Where this book shone was in world building and it's the world building that will keep me reading。 Nevada knows a lot about the magical world she grew up in, which was one of poor/middle class working folks。 It is through her interactions with the wealthy and excessively powerful magic users, which is very different from the world she grew up in, that we learn about how the magic and class systems of this world operate。 It's a fascinating read because the complexity of it all is broken down so simply for readers that every revelation about the world makes sense because it can be easily connected to what the reader already knows about the world。 Fantasy is beautifully married to realism here and is what earned most of the book's 4 star rating。 。。。more
