Summary

OTHER CHILDREN GET GIVEN XYLOPHONES。 SUSAN JUST HAD TO ASK HER GRANDFATHER TO TAKE HIS VEST OFF。

Yes。 There's a Death in the family。

It's hard to grow up normally when Grandfather rides a white horse and wields a scythe - especially when you have to take over the family business, and everyone mistakes you for the Tooth Fairy。 And especially when you have to face the new and addictive music that has entered Discworld。

It's lawless。 It changes people。

It's called Music With Rocks In。

It's got a beat and you can dance to it, but。。。

It's alive。

And it won't fade away。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I wouldn’t call this a Death book but it was still very gripping and made me fall in love with Ridcully- I was not his biggest fan before this book

This is a tough one to rate。 The humor was great and it had some deep quotes, but I'm not sure if it's the Deaf guy in me or what, but I didn't get into it as the previous 2 death books。 Overall, I enjoyed it though, just maybe not the audience given the primary theme。 That and I wanted more Death。 This is a tough one to rate。 The humor was great and it had some deep quotes, but I'm not sure if it's the Deaf guy in me or what, but I didn't get into it as the previous 2 death books。 Overall, I enjoyed it though, just maybe not the audience given the primary theme。 That and I wanted more Death。 。。。more

2021 bk 209。 Prepare yourself for the puns, word plays, misquotations and most of all for the music。 You will find yourself tapping your toes as the band Music with Rocks In performs sold out concerts with a guitar riff that captures the souls of the living。 A fun book and an important book in the life of Susan, granddaughter of DEATH。 Throughout this story is woven the tale of DEATH's attempt at a vacation。 oh, woe is me。 2021 bk 209。 Prepare yourself for the puns, word plays, misquotations and most of all for the music。 You will find yourself tapping your toes as the band Music with Rocks In performs sold out concerts with a guitar riff that captures the souls of the living。 A fun book and an important book in the life of Susan, granddaughter of DEATH。 Throughout this story is woven the tale of DEATH's attempt at a vacation。 oh, woe is me。 。。。more

At first, I wasn't sure about this one, but it's quickly rocketed up to one of my favorites! Wonderful heart and humor。 The descriptions of music are especially notable, as the book is (of course) a non-audio work。 At first, I wasn't sure about this one, but it's quickly rocketed up to one of my favorites! It's rather unfortunate that I was unable to complete this book。 I was hoping for more information on Susan and the Tooth Fairy。 It's just that it went down that extremely tiresome road that 'Moving Pictures' did with the satire on the movie industry。 What happens is things stop being funny and start becoming clever。 Oh his name is 'Buddy', and the troll is called 'Cliff'? Occasionally I would give a Discworld book a 4。 This was purely because I liked others better。 These 4 star ratings haunt me, however, since every one of these books are a 5 (to me, I suppose。 But to everyone, surely?) Because of this, I'm going to stop rating books and instead, perhaps, leave a little note if it was really, really good or really, really bad。 The trouble with it all is that I don't read what I won't enjoy, so pretty much everything is on a scale of 3-5 anyways。。。 No use in that Occasionally I would give a Discworld book a 4。 This was purely because I liked others better。 These 4 star ratings haunt me, however, since every one of these books are a 5 (to me, I suppose。 But to everyone, surely?) Love that Pratchett explored the musical world。 As always us uncanny ability to know an unbelievable amount about everything is mind blowing。 Lots of funny quips and a really great character progression from Death。 Not his best work but very entertaining。

Een ultieme ode voor “Music with Rocks In” en de mooiste en fantasie-volste verklaring voor het ontstaan van de wereld die ik ooit heb gelezen。 Dit boek geeft ‘snaartheorie’ een heel andere lading。。。“A voice said: One。 One。 One, two。 One, two。 Then the footsteps went back into the distance。 After a while, another voice said: One, two, three, four- And the universe came into being。 It was wrong to call it a big bang。 That would just be noise, and all that noise could create is more noise and a co Een ultieme ode voor “Music with Rocks In” en de mooiste en fantasie-volste verklaring voor het ontstaan van de wereld die ik ooit heb gelezen。 Dit boek geeft ‘snaartheorie’ een heel andere lading。。。“A voice said: One。 One。 One, two。 One, two。 Then the footsteps went back into the distance。 After a while, another voice said: One, two, three, four- And the universe came into being。 It was wrong to call it a big bang。 That would just be noise, and all that noise could create is more noise and a cosmos full of random particles。 Matter exploded into being, apparently as chaos, but in fact as a chord。 The ultimate power chord。” 。。。more

Once again, Pratchett knocks it out of the park for me。 I fall more in love with the Discworld series with each book I read。 Death has easily solidified himself as one of my most favorite fictional characters of all time。 Soul Music is book number 16 in the Discworld series as a whole but the third book in the Death sub-series。 As per usual, Pratchett blends the perfect mix of fantasy and humor to keep readers entertained and wondering what could possibly happen next。 I cannot recommend Pratchet Once again, Pratchett knocks it out of the park for me。 I fall more in love with the Discworld series with each book I read。 Death has easily solidified himself as one of my most favorite fictional characters of all time。 Soul Music is book number 16 in the Discworld series as a whole but the third book in the Death sub-series。 As per usual, Pratchett blends the perfect mix of fantasy and humor to keep readers entertained and wondering what could possibly happen next。 I cannot recommend Pratchett's writing enough if you are looking for absurdist fantasy or just need a really good laugh。 。。。more

The hippo of recollection stirred in the muddy waters of the mind"。 "No-one had taught Susan about the power of belief, or at least about the power of belief in a combination of high magical potential and low reality stability such as existed on the Discworld。 Belief makes a hollow place。 Something has to roll in to fill it。 Which is not say that belief denies logic。 For example, it's fairly obvious that the Sandman needs only a small sack。 On the Discworld, he doesn't bother to take the sand out first。" (p。 70)Music with Rock In: "And still the music flooded out。 The Librarian's hair was standing on end, all over his body。 The ends crackled。 It made you want to kick down walls and ascend the sky on steps of fire。 It made you want to pull all the switches and throw all the levers and stick your fingers in the electric socket of the universe to see what happened next。 It made you want to paint your bedroom wall black and cover it with posters。。。" (p。 114)When Death speaks, he does so in Upper-case"He leaned down again until his skull was on a level with her face。 BUT MOST PEOPLE ARE RATHER STUPID AND WASTE THEIR LIVES。 HAVE YOU NOT SEEN THAT? HAVE YOU NOT LOOKED DOWN FROM THE HORSE AT A CITY AND THOUGHT HOW MUCH IT RESEMBLED AN ANT HEAP, FULL OF BLIND CREATURES WHO THINK THEIR MUNDANE LITTLE WORLD IS REAL? YOU SEE THE LIGHTED WINDOWS AND WHAT YOU WANT TO THINK IS THAT THERE MAY BE MANY INTERESTING STORIES BEHIND THEM, BUT WHAT YOU KOW IS THAT REALLY THERE ARE JUST DULL, DULL SOULS, MERE CONSUMERS OF FOOD, WHO THINK THEIR INSTINCTS ARE EMOTIONS AND THEIR TINY LIVES OF MORE ACCOUNT THAN A WHISPER OF WIND。" (p。 154-155)Meanwhile in the mind of a dwarf:"Glod hesitated。 He wanted to say that for a dwarf the whole point of having a pile of gold was, well, to have a pile of gold。 It didn't have to do anything other than be just as oraceous as gold could be。" (p。 157) oraceous? "-aceous" is from New Latin, meaning: "relating to。。。 resembling" according to The Free Dictionary。 I don't know Latin, perhaps aurum = "or" or "ora"?Merriam-Webster suggest a different word might be a better fit: "effulgent, bedazzling, brilliant, candescent, dazzling, fulgent, glowing, lambent, lucent, lustrous, radiant, sheeny, shining, splendid。。。"Cosmology, discussed by the Arch Chancellor of Unseen University and a nerdy student: "'It wouldn't have to be loud to be heard everywhere,' said Ponder。 'The reason being, at that point everywhere was all in one place。' Ridcully gave him the look people give conjurors who've just removed an egg from their ear。 'Everywhere was all in one place?' 'Yes。' 'So where was everywhere else?' 'That was all in one place, too。' 'The same place?' 'Yes。' 'Crunched up very small?' Ridcully was beginning to show certain signs。 If he had been a volcano, natives living nearby would be looking for a handy virgin。。。 'Riktor said he thought that the sound came first。 One great big complicated chord。 The biggest most complicated sound there ever was。 A sound so complex that you couldn't play it within a universe, any more than you can open a box with the crowbar that's inside it。 One great chord which 。。。 as it were 。。。 played everything into being。 Started the music, if you like。' 'A sort of ta-dahhh?' said Ridcully。 'I suppose so。' 'I thought the universe came into being because some god cut off some other god's wedding tackle and made the universe out of it,' said Ridcully。 'Always seemed straightforward to me。 I mean, it's the kind of thing you can imagine happenin'。。。'" (p。 193-194)The head of Ankh-Morpork – and the bottom。。。Foul Ole Ron, professional maniac and one of Ankh-Morpork's most industrious beggars, blinked in the gloom。 Lord Vetinari had excellent night vision。 And, unfortunately, a well-developed sense of smell。 'And then what happened?' he said, trying to keep his face turned away from the beggar。 Because the fact was that although in actual size Foul Ole Ron was a small hunched man in a huge grubby overcoat, in smell he filled the world。 In fact Foul Ole Ron was a physical schizophrenic。 There was Foul Ole Ron, and there was the smell of Foul Ole Ron, which had obviously developed over the years to such an extent that it had a distinct personality。 Anyone could have a smell that lingered long after they'd gone somewhere else, but the smell of Foul Ole Ron could actually arrive somewhere several minutes before he did, in order to spread out and get comfortable before he arrived。。。 'Buggrit, buggrit, wrong side out, I told 'em, buggrem。。。' The Patrician waited。 With Foul Ole Ron you had to allow time for his wandering mind to get into the same vicinity as his tongue。 '。。。 spyin' on me with magic, I told 'em, bean soup, see here 。。。 and then everyone was dancing you see。。。¨' 'Yes, yes, and so on,' said the Patrician, waving a thin hand。 'And that's all you can tell me?' 'Well 。。。 bug–' Foul Ole Ron caught the Patrician's eye and got a grip on himself。 Even in his own highly individualized sanity he could tell when not to push his threadbare luck。 His Smell wandered around the room, reading documents and examining the pictures。。。 "The Patrician sat back。 Si non confectus, non reficiat*。 That was the motto of the Vetinaris。 Everything worked if you just let it happen。 He picked up a stack of sheet-music and began to listen to Salami's Prelude to a Nocturne on a Theme by Bubbla。 After a while he looked up。 'Don't hesitate to leave,' he snapped。 The Smell slunk away。" (p。 229, 230, 233) *"If it ain't broke don't fix it"。Buddy & Susan: "Susan stamped forward and picked up the guitar。 'I mean this!' The strings moved and whined under her hand。 'Don't touch that!' 'It's taken you over,' said Susan throwing it on to the bed。 Buddy grabbed it and played a chord。 'I know what you're going to say,' he said。 'Everyone says it。 The other two think it's evil。 But it's not!' 'It might not be evil, but it's not right! Not here, not now。' Yes, but I can handle it。' 'You can't handle it。 It handles you' 。。。 'Well, I don't have to listen to mysterious occult women! You probably don't even exist! So you can just fly back to your magic castle, OK?' Susan was temporarily speechless。 She was reconciled to the irredeemable dumbness of most of mankind, particularly the section of it that stood upright and shaved in the mornings, but she was also affronted。 No-one had ever talked to Death like this。 At least not for long。。。" (p。 246-247)The Rite of AshkEnte。 To summon Death。。。 "This new music 。。。 tell us about it。' 'You summoned Death to ask that?' 'I'm not sure who we've summoned,' said Ridcully。 'It is really alive?' 'I 。。。 think so。'。。。 Should it be here?' 'What?' 'Should it be here?' Ridcully repeated patiently。 'Is it something that's supposed to be happening?' Susan suddenly felt important。 Wizards were rumoured to be wise – in fact, that's where the word came from。1 But they were asking her things。 They were listening to her。 Pride sparkled in her eyes。 'I 。。。 don't think so。 It's turned up here by some kind of accident。 This isn't the right world for it。'1From the Old wys-ars lit。: one who, at bottom, is very smart。" (p。 249-250)Death drunk: "'SEE THIS GLASS, RIGHT? SEE IT? IT'S LIKE MEMORY。 ONNACOUNTA IF YOU PUT MORE STUFF IN, MORE STUFF FLOWS OUT, RIGHT? 'S' FACT。 EVERONEGOTTA MEMORY LIKE THIS。 'S'WHAT KEEPS HUMANS FROM GOING ISS- ISH- INSH- MAD。 'CEPT ME。 POOROLE ME。 I REMEMBER EVERYTHING。 AS IF IT HAPPENED ONLY TOMORROW。 EVERYTHING'。 He looked down at his drink。 'AH,' he said, FUNNY HOW THINGS COME BACK TO YOU, ISN'T IT? It was the most impressive collapse the bar had ever seen。 The tall dark stranger fell backwards slowly, like a tree。 There was no cissy sagging of the knees, no cop – out bouncing off a table on the way down。 He simply went from vertical to horizontal in one marvellous geometric sweep。 Several people applauded as he hit the floor。 Then they searched his pocket, or at least made an effort to search his pockets but couldn't find any。 And then they threw him into the river。11Or, at least, on to the river。" {The Ankh being fluidly challenged。} (p。 261-262)"The bridge was quite high。 There were buildings on it, lining it on both sides so that the actual roadway was quite cramped。 The bridges were quite popular as building sites, because they had a very convenient sewage system and, of course, a source of fresh water。。。" (p。 266)"'You boys seen an iconograph? [Cut-My-Own-Throat Dibbler] said。 'Oh, yes 。。。 I mean, yeah,' said Jimbot。 'They've got a little demon inside them that paints pictures of things you point it at。' 'This is like that, only for sound,' said Dibbler。 Jimbo squinted past the open lid。 Can's see any 。。。 I mean, can't see no demon,' he said。 That's because there isn't one,' said Dibbler。 It was worrying him, too。 He'd have been a little bit happier if there'd been a demon or some sort of magic。 Something simple and understandable。 He didn't like the idea of meddling in science。。。" (p。 282)Susan explores Death's house: She tried upstairs。 There was her own room, and there was a corridor of doors that didn't open and possibly never could – the doors and frames had an all-in-one, moulded together look。 Presumably Death had a bedroom, although proverbially Death never slept。 Perhaps he just lay in bed reading。" (p。 292)"After a while, another voice said: one, two, three, four— And the universe came into being。 It was wrong to call it a big bang。 That would just be noise, and all that noise could create is more noise and a cosmos full of random particles。 Matter exploded into being, apparently as chaos, but in fact as a chord。 The ultimate power chord。 Everything all together, streaming out in one huge rush that contained within itself, like reverse fossils, everything that it was going to be。 And, zigzagging through the expanding cloud, alive, that first wild live music。This had shape。 It had spin。 It had rhythm。 It had a beat, and you could dance to it。 Everything did。" (p。 361-362)I am partial to the Ankh-Morpork City Watch, who are only marginally involved here。 I also am a fan of the Lancre witches, who don't appear at all。 Nor does Tiffany Aching my favourite character of them all。 But we do have Death here, always entertaining - and deep, and Susan - ditto。 And CMOT Dibbler, and Foul Ole Ron, a visit to the Mended Drum, and considerable involvement of the senior fellows of Unseen University, particularly the down to earth Arch Chancellor Ridcully。 The conversation between Foul Ole Ron and the Patrician, in itself, is worth the price of a reread。 Wonderful situations, exotic milieus, a bad guy, trolls, dwarves, people, music! 。。。more

This was a wonderful Discworld entry!
