Summary

Alternate cover edition - ISBN13: 9780261102217

Smaug certainly looked fast asleep, when Bilbo peeped once more from the entrance。 He was just about to step out on to the floor when he caught a sudden thin ray of red from under the drooping lid of Smaug's left eye。 He was only pretending to be asleep! He was watching the tunnel entrance。。。

Whisked away from his comfortable, unambitious life in his hobbit-hole in Bag End by Gandalf the wizard and a company of dwarves, Bilbo Baggins finds himself caught up in a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon。。。

。。。more

Bilbo Baggins is the best。 This was a fantastic adventure。 Perfect for people looking for an entrance to fantasy。 My first time reading Tolkien

Andy

a classic from jay ronald。 always a pleasure to revisit

This took me some time to get through, but I really did enjoy it。 I hope Andy continues to preform the series!

Jenna Lenhardt

I read this book when I was 14 camping with strangers in the Canadian wilderness。 What a lovely memory。

What can I say that hasn't been said already?I wish I've read this as a kid, but I'm thankful to have experienced it now。 I've tried to read this several times, years ago, but I'd always stalled right about when the trolls appear, because my jaded and rusty mind's eye isn't what it once was and I just couldn't conjure the right amount of magic by myself。。。Until, one sleepless night, I accidentally came across a "theatrical audiobook" masterfully narrated and edited by Bluefax, and as I heard the What can I say that hasn't been said already?I wish I've read this as a kid, but I'm thankful to have experienced it now。 I've tried to read this several times, years ago, but I'd always stalled right about when the trolls appear, because my jaded and rusty mind's eye isn't what it once was and I just couldn't conjure the right amount of magic by myself。。。Until, one sleepless night, I accidentally came across a "theatrical audiobook" masterfully narrated and edited by Bluefax, and as I heard the opening lines my heart suddenly felt very, very warm。 Now I must admit this is the definite way to experience The Hobbit。 The music, the narration, the excellent voiceover and the overall quality of this reading left me speechless。 I shivered, smiled, laughed, cheered and gasped like a little kid being told a bedtime story。 My wonder was restored。 And so I listened to this beautiful and timeless tale bit by bit, over several months, just to savor it longer。 I really didn't want the magic to end。 Who wants it, really? But the journey finally ended today。Aspects that stuck out to me:- the contagious nature of greed。- bilbo is very relatable。 true heroes are never fearless - actually they are terrified most of the time, pushed into the perils of the unknown。 - character development!- anticapitalism?!!!!- the most fearsome and terrifying parts of bilbo's journey, the ones he hated the most, were the ones he enjoyed remembering。 this is a reminder to get out of comfort zones as much as humanly possible。- good things are so much harder to write about than bad ones。 this stumbling review is an example。 i wish i could form a coherent way of saying "this is really good y'all, give it a shot" while accurately conveying all i feel about this tiny book 。。。more

Bilbo carries those dwarves far more than I remembered。 Respect。 Really weird that the book completely omits the Legolas-Dwarf-Girl Elf love triangle。

In my house it was always Harry Potter versus Lord of the Rings。 The first three Potter movies came out at the same time as the Lotr movies。 So my dad took my brothers to see LOTR and my mum and I went to see Harry Potter。 This way I never paid any attention to this series, as 'Harry Potter is way better'。 It's just that I grew up with Harry Potter。 But there was always a want for the LOTR series。 I wanted to see the movies and read the books, but I never had the time。 Never took the time。 And n In my house it was always Harry Potter versus Lord of the Rings。 The first three Potter movies came out at the same time as the Lotr movies。 So my dad took my brothers to see LOTR and my mum and I went to see Harry Potter。 This way I never paid any attention to this series, as 'Harry Potter is way better'。 It's just that I grew up with Harry Potter。 But there was always a want for the LOTR series。 I wanted to see the movies and read the books, but I never had the time。 Never took the time。 And now that time is here。 I have to say that I thought The Hobbit was quite difficult to read at some points。 I mentally skipped points, but I also went back a few times to reread and try to understand。 In the end I quite liked the journey that the book took me on。 So on we go! 。。。more

“If ever you are passing my way, don’t wait to knock! Tea time is at four; but any of you are welcome at anytime!”The amazing adventure aside, the personality and habits of hobbits really hit home。 They really do live nice little lives。 Always love coming back to this story along with the LOTR series。 Absolute bangers。

Reading this a long time after I read the trilogy。 It’s perfect。 Will need to read the whole trilogy again。 Also: Bilbo >>> Frodo。

Somehow, Tolkien's writing is so Incredibly simple, but so beautiful!!! The descriptions, the characters and the plot。 Everything is amazing。 Also the world building and language and culture development is completely not descripable。。。 AMAZING Somehow, Tolkien's writing is so Incredibly simple, but so beautiful!!! I liked the book in general before, but I usually like a little more action & interaction and much less scenery description than Tolkien usually writes。 After listening to the audio book narrated by Andy Serkis, I found a whole new love for this book。 If you've watched any of the LOTR movies, you know Andy Serkis is fantastic。 He breathes a whole new life into the story for me。 I would HIGHLY recommend his narration to anybody and everybody who likes to listen to their books。 I liked the book in general before, but I usually like a little more action & interaction and much less scenery description than Tolkien usually writes。 After listening to the audio book narrated by Andy Serkis, I found a whole new love for this book。 If you've watched any of the LOTR movies, you know Andy Serkis is fantastic。 He breathes a whole new life into the story for me。 I would HIGHLY recommend his narration to anybody and everybody who likes to listen to their books。 。。。more

Although I enjoyed the dramatized version of this audiobook, I found it difficult to follow。 At times there was too much happening in the background simultaneously to keep my attention, and it took me a while to into the grove of this unique format。 I particularly enjoyed the action scenes and hearing the different characters come to life, but many of the voices were grating and unintelligible。 If I did not already know the story, I would not have enjoyed it as much。 I'm giving this book 3 stars Although I enjoyed the dramatized version of this audiobook, I found it difficult to follow。 At times there was too much happening in the background simultaneously to keep my attention, and it took me a while to into the grove of this unique format。 I particularly enjoyed the action scenes and hearing the different characters come to life, but many of the voices were grating and unintelligible。 If I did not already know the story, I would not have enjoyed it as much。 I'm giving this book 3 stars because it left out many details, and it was pretty challenging to follow。 I now feel the need to read the original story。 。。。more
