Summary

Get Out meets Danielle Vega in this YA horror where survival is not a guarantee。

Jake Livingston is one of the only Black kids at St。 Clair Prep, one of the others being his infinitely more popular older brother。 It’s hard enough fitting in but to make matters worse and definitely more complicated, Jake can see the dead。 In fact he sees the dead around him all the time。 Most are harmless。 Stuck in their death loops as they relive their deaths over and over again, they don’t interact often with people。 But then Jake meets Sawyer。 A troubled teen who shot and killed six kids at a local high school last year before taking his own life。 Now a powerful, vengeful ghost, he has plans for his afterlife–plans that include Jake。 Suddenly, everything Jake knows about ghosts and the rules to life itself go out the window as Sawyer begins haunting him and bodies turn up in his neighborhood。 High school soon becomes a survival game–one Jake is not sure he’s going to win。

I really wanted to love this book。 There are some really good parts and I love the idea of a Black teen protagonist who not only deals with racism, bullying but can see murdered dead people。 The pacing was slow and at times it was hard to keep my attention。

I liked the story。 It has a really strong start and a great pace as we read two POVs, getting to know the MC Jake Livingston and troubled teen, Sawyer Doon。 About halfway through the pacing somewhat changed and I began to lose a little interest despite the fact that some interesting things were happening。 I did find some of the scenes, especially near the end, really confusing to understand and wasn't able illustrate what was happening in my mind。 There in fact, was a lot of great description, b I liked the story。 It has a really strong start and a great pace as we read two POVs, getting to know the MC Jake Livingston and troubled teen, Sawyer Doon。 About halfway through the pacing somewhat changed and I began to lose a little interest despite the fact that some interesting things were happening。 I did find some of the scenes, especially near the end, really confusing to understand and wasn't able illustrate what was happening in my mind。 There in fact, was a lot of great description, but I found that some of the terms such as "ecto-mist" wasn't enough to help me picture what was really going on。I was underwhelmed when I reached the end of the story, which I feel terrible for thinking。 The themes and subtle messages about today's society are so important, and there is a clear lack of representation for black gay teens in books but also in media Overall, this story was decent and had some action-packed moments, and even some scenes that provoked anger, a sense of suspense and annoyance。 My actual rating is 3。5 stars but rounding down。 。。。more

Rounded up from 4。5 starsThis book follows a Jake, a boy who struggles with being the only Black queer kid at his high school … and the fact that he can see ghosts。 But when a vengeful ghost starts murdering people in his neighborhood, it’s up to Jake to stop it, or else he might be next! This is a really short, fast read that kept me turning pages! I loved the character of Jake — he’s a genuinely compassionate person with realistic flaws, and his development throughout the story was great。 I was Rounded up from 4。5 starsThis book follows a Jake, a boy who struggles with being the only Black queer kid at his high school … and the fact that he can see ghosts。 But when a vengeful ghost starts murdering people in his neighborhood, it’s up to Jake to stop it, or else he might be next! This is a really short, fast read that kept me turning pages! This was an interesting book, and not something I have read before。 I found it very impactful and heart-wrenching (not something I would have expected from a horror book!)。 Overall, I really enjoyed this book。 It was darker than I had originally expected – not the standard “dark tone” that you grow to expect from horror – which I personally loved。 This is perfect for a Fall/Halloween read – and if you aren’t too scared read it in the dark! For my full review: click here This was an interesting book, and not something I have read before。 I found it very impactful and heart-wrenching (not something I would have expected from a horror book!)。 Overall, I really enjoyed this book。 It was darker than I had originally expected – not the standard “dark tone” that you grow to expect from horror – which I personally loved。 This is perfect for a Fall/Halloween read – and if you aren’t too scared read it in the dark! For my full review: click here 。。。more

This book had a lot an interesting premise, and it was certainly an enjoyable take on what it would be like to see ghosts every day。 Jake, the protagonist, is being hunted by a vengeful ghost who wants to possess him。 As a closeted gay student and the only black person in his year, Jake struggled to fit in and make friends, and this is even more difficult because of all the ghosts he sees。While Jake was a sympathetic character, my biggest issue with this book is that I really struggled to emotio This book had a lot an interesting premise, and it was certainly an enjoyable take on what it would be like to see ghosts every day。 Jake, the protagonist, is being hunted by a vengeful ghost who wants to possess him。 As a closeted gay student and the only black person in his year, Jake struggled to fit in and make friends, and this is even more difficult because of all the ghosts he sees。While Jake was a sympathetic character, my biggest issue with this book is that I really struggled to emotionally connect with any of the characters。 The writing wasn’t very engaging; I felt disconnected from much of Jake’s narration。 I still don’t feel like I really know his personality; as a result, even a lot of the supernatural aspects of the story felt distant, because Jake didn't truly feel like a real, fully developed character to me。 I understand that his ability to see ghosts everywhere made him constantly zone out in his daily life — to the point where his friends and family often mention it。 But this also had the effect of me, as a reader, feeling disconnected from his character。 Because of this, he felt pretty empty to me。 I also don’t think that his relationships were written very well — in particular, I felt like the way his relationship with his brother changed by the end of the book felt abrupt and rushed。 The ending in general felt way too quick; there certainly was not enough build up。 Overall, this is by no means a bad book, but I think that it could have really benefited from a more balanced focus between the plot and the characters。 。。。more

An impossible to put down book that carries enough creeps and shock-value in fiction value alone, but the fact that the author took the care to weave their story in a world so real that it carries as much terror as the fiction。This is a truly haunting story of characters facing real life challenges and those of fictional horror。 I'm not sure which is worse。Great book, great characters, haunting moments in good and unfortunate ways。 This has heart that is very real, and I hope everyone who reads An impossible to put down book that carries enough creeps and shock-value in fiction value alone, but the fact that the author took the care to weave their story in a world so real that it carries as much terror as the fiction。This is a truly haunting story of characters facing real life challenges and those of fictional horror。 I'm not sure which is worse。Great book, great characters, haunting moments in good and unfortunate ways。 This has heart that is very real, and I hope everyone who reads it grasps that。 This book felt to me like it was one ghostly breath away from being all too real。 。。。more

Apparently。Enter Sawyer, the poltergeist of a school shooter who isn’t quite done with the lives of the living。 He wants Jake’s body to finish what he started, and he’s not going to stop until he gets what he wants…unless Jake stops him first。 This book has a bit of a sluggish start bc of the main character’s passive nature & his slow narration, but once the story starts it really gets to you。 The writing was lush & gorgeous, with really lovely (if horrifying) pockets of imagery that sucked me in。 The collision course set between Jake & the poltergeist feels raw & at times spine-crawling, especially bc you’re in the killer’s head for a chunk of the first half。 You really feel for Jake as he struggles with his identity and his calling。 Over all, this was a great horror coming-of-age story about accepting yourself & facing your darkness。 。。。more

I loved the ending! It was so heartfelt and felt and I really REALLY felt for jake! He smiles giddily。 "You can get me in?" "It's not the Met Gala, Grady -it's a house party"] Jake has found himself to be the focus of a powerful ghost who brought a gun to school shooting people before himself。 But it goes beyond that, becoming a story bigger than expected。 It feels so real and true, with issues like: homophobia, depression, sexual abuse, RACISM!! and bullying, It was a book I really enjoyed but was hard to get into it and get used to the way it was written。 Even though is short but gripping and entertaining。 I'll be expecting more books from this author in the future。Español:(4。5) Bueno, bueno, bueno。 No pensé que el libro me fuera a gustar tanto como terminó gustándome。 The taking of Jake Livingston es un thriller social que sigue a Jake, quien tiene la habilidad de ver la muerte de los fantasmas en ciclos justo en sus últimos momentos de vida。 Además es el único estudiante negro de su escuela privada y enfrenta racismo tanto por los estudiantes como por profesores por igual。 Y todo cambia cuando un fantasma, comienza a perseguirlo en todo lo que hace。El comienzo del libro fue demasiado confuso, debido a que contamos con dos puntos de vista diferentes y vamos conociendo tanto a Jake como a Sawyer, el fantasma que lo atormenta。 Pero después de eso nos mantenemos con la historia principal del libro que es realmente increíble。 Amé el hecho que hubo representación LGTB (en el pasado y presente) y los personajes estaban tan bien escritos que uno se puede identificar con ellos。Jake se encontró así mismo siendo el enfoque de un poderoso fantasma que había llevado un arma a la escuela empezando un tiroteo, terminando consigo mismo。Pero esto va mucho más allá de eso y se convierte en una historia mucho más grande de lo esperado。 Se siente tan real y verdadero, con problemas como la: homofobia, depresión, abuso sexual, ¡¡¡RACISMO!!! y el matoneo。Fue un libro que realmente disfruté pero fue duro adentrarse en él y acostumbrarse a como estaba escrito en inglés- Sin embargo es corto pero enganchador y entretenido。 Estaré esperando más libros de este autor en el futuro。*** This is an e-ARC, uncorrected text。 。。。more

I loved how the author covered some heavy topics like racism, bullying and homophobia。 What should have been a hit for me, unfortunately was underwhelming。 I wanted to love this more than I did。 I mean come on, a boy who sees ghosts?! And a ghost who can still hurt people? 🤯The alternating POV’s were done really well, but it was one of those books that when I put it down, I wasn’t that eager to pick it back up。Even though it was just average for me, I’d still encourage others to give it a go。
