Summary

For more than two thousand years, Sun-tzu's The Art of War has provided leaders with essential advice on battlefield tactics, managing troops and terrain, and employing cunning and deception。 An elemental part of Chinese culture, it has also become a touchstone for the Western struggle for survival and success, whether in battle, in business or in relationships。 Now, in this crisp, accessible new translation, John Minford brings this seminal work to life for today's readers。

Capturing the literary quality of The Art of War - its lucid, epigrammatic, almost poetic style - as well as its philosophical and strategic content, Minford present the core text in two different formats。 First, the unadorned thirteen chapters allow readers to form their own first impressions of the ancient words of wisdom ascribed to Sun-tzu。 Then the same text appears with extensive running commentary from the canon of traditional Chinese commentators and others, providing context and subtext to the work。 A lively, learned introduction, chronologies, suggested readings, and other valuable apparatus round this authoritative volume。 Even those readers familiar with The Art of War will experience it anew, finding it more fascinating - and more chilling - than ever。

This was interesting but my thoughts on it didn’t go any further。 Perhaps, I’m not at the right stage in my life to get whatever everyone else seems to get out of this book。

War is not an artWar is not an art。 It's a demonstration of our lack of progress in evolution。 Sun Tzu sounds like Captain Obvious。 If you need this book to command, you are not fit to command。 War is not an artWar is not an art。 It's a demonstration of our lack of progress in evolution。 Sun Tzu sounds like Captain Obvious。 If you need this book to command, you are not fit to command。 。。。more

The Art of War 孫子兵法 is a compiled set of direct and to the point strategies that can be used not only in combat but in dealing with situations that may come up in business and complex daily life problems。 Even though published around 5th century B。C every strategy is still relevant today。 This may also be helpful to people who need structure, discipline and organization。It's a quick read and a classic。 The Art of War 孫子兵法 is a compiled set of direct and to the point strategies that can be used not only in combat but in dealing with situations that may come up in business and complex daily life problems。 Even though published around 5th century B。C every strategy is still relevant today。 This may also be helpful to people who need structure, discipline and organization。It's a quick read and a classic。 。。。more

Definitely makes you think about how you approach people in life。 And how people perceive you。 It was fun to annotate the book and pretend I was a general。 The only thing is that some points were just logic to me already。 But it was really funny to see “if the information is leaked before it is ripe, sentence your spy to death along with the man he divulged the info to”

it kept me interested and it didn’t make me feel lost when Reading it。 I would read it again 😁

Sun tzu gives detailed set of guidelines to be followed during a war - some of which can be incorporated in our daily struggles。 Kind of amazing how a 2500 year old book still stays relevant in today’s world。 It is good book, one time read。

I never expected this book to be this helpful。 I acquired several books on the topic of ancient warfare, but I think after reading (or, I should say, listening to) this, I don’t need the rest of my pile。 The fact that Aidan Gillen narrates the audiobook made my day。 It was definitely the cherry on top。

This book is about Master Sun sharing his wisdom and experience on defeating enemies during war。 Not only does he provide theoretic guidance on matters of strategy, he also offers specific advice, for example suggesting the best way to move troops through various types of terrain。 This book is useful to everyone。 The reason is that the art of war isn’t really about war。 It’s about how to use strategy to overcome all of life’s obstacles。 For example, Sun Tzu writes, “The wise warrior avoids the b This book is about Master Sun sharing his wisdom and experience on defeating enemies during war。 Not only does he provide theoretic guidance on matters of strategy, he also offers specific advice, for example suggesting the best way to move troops through various types of terrain。 This book is useful to everyone。 The reason is that the art of war isn’t really about war。 It’s about how to use strategy to overcome all of life’s obstacles。 For example, Sun Tzu writes, “The wise warrior avoids the battle “。 These are wise words。 The next time you find yourself in a tense situation, refrain from acting with anger。 Instead, excuse yourself from the situation。 I highly recommend this book to teenagers because it will help us to become a winner。 。。。more

Though many ideas currently appear to be simple logic, The Art of War is certainly impressive by past standards, withstanding the test of time as a result。

For a book that is literally 2500 years old, a lot of the lessons are still relevant today。 This book was pretty interesting。 KNOW。 YOUR。 ENEMY。 Pick your battles。 Disciple disciple discipline。 Anyone in a leadership role needs to read this book。

Really great to read this at my time of my life and work。 Brings a context and ideas as to why things are and who we are as a people。

A classic I had on my to-read list for ages。 The "rules" that Sun Tzu says drive the captain to victory are applicable to many areas of life。 I understand why it's a classic。A few:Information is decisive。 Sun Tzu repeatedly says this, by suggesting the use of spies, not giving too many explanations (not even to people on your side), and using deception to throw off the enemy。 The less information the enemy has and the more you have, the higher the chances of victory。The best general is he who is A classic I had on my to-read list for ages。 The "rules" that Sun Tzu says drive the captain to victory are applicable to many areas of life。 I understand why it's a classic。A few:Information is decisive。 Sun Tzu repeatedly says this, by suggesting the use of spies, not giving too many explanations (not even to people on your side), and using deception to throw off the enemy。 The less information the enemy has and the more you have, the higher the chances of victory。The best general is he who is victorious without battle。 But when there has to be a battle, it's best to know both the enemy and yourself。 Exterior factors are just as important as interior ones。 Discipline and order are a must。 Adaptability and manouvering can save the army。Understanding how and when to apply pressure to both the enemy and the people in your command is a path to victory。Do not waste resources and do not waste time。 If you can, take resources from the enemy。Never leave an opponent with no way out。 Desperate people tend to lose their fear。Keep the energy flowing, whether it is to defend, to march, or to attack。 Sieges are for idiots。 。。。more

Admirable philosophies。Quick read, two sittings。 Will look for another translation。

Just amazing tactical descriptions and knowledge and even more fascinating due to when it was written and how it was collected。 Its a historically significant book。

I have wanted to read this for many years。 It is a very condensed set of 'rules' for waging war。 To get the most out of it you really would need to study this and assess how they may be used in any particular situation。 I know this has been used in business strategy books but feel that is somewhat of a stretch; it really is about going to war。 I have wanted to read this for many years。 It is a very condensed set of 'rules' for waging war。 To get the most out of it you really would need to study this and assess how they may be used in any particular situation。 I know this has been used in business strategy books but feel that is somewhat of a stretch; it really is about going to war。 。。。more
