Summary

Fading southern belle Blanche Dubois depends on the kindness of strangers and is adrift in the modern world。 When she arrives to stay with her sister Stella in a crowded, boisterous corner of New Orleans, her delusions of grandeur bring her into conflict with Stella's crude, brutish husband Stanley。 Eventually their violent collision course causes Blanche's fragile sense of identity to crumble, threatening to destroy her sanity and her one chance of happiness。

Tennessee Williams's steamy and shocking landmark drama, recreated as the immortal film starring Marlo Brando and Vivien Leigh, is one of the most influential plays of the twentieth century。

well I was not expecting to like this🤣Haha read for class, but actually enjoyed the dialogue//examining late 40s family/marriage structure (and how glad I am to be a woman in the 2000s lol)

Did not expect myself to be able to appreciate American Drama, but loved the emotional voltage and cathartic scenes this book offered :)

5 Stars! The cast I listened to was amazing。 I listened to the one on Audible Plus。 It was amazing and hope to see the movie or play real soon。 Was beautifully written and want to read/listen to more of Tennessee Williams。

I’ve always wanted to read this play by the legendary Tennessee Williams, who led a brave but tragic life。 This play was written in 1947, so it’s interesting to see how certain ways of life are accepted in that time, while other sensitive topics, which are still pertinent today, are discussed and viewed。 I have to see this played out on the screen now!

。。。more

My 11th grade English teacher introduced me to this and I enjoyed Tennessee Williams style of writing, especially during that time。 A huge-eye opening for me; I should read more books of that time。I rated this four stars because there were some aspects that were personally hard to enjoy。

one of those classroom classics that i somehow never got around to。 surprisingly good despite everyone saying it is。 beautiful dialogue and a shocking examination of flawed characters

I had never read or seen this performed and it was a fascinating read。 I wish I could see it on stage but will have to settle for the movie。 This is one of those books I wish I had read in an English class or at least with a book club because I felt the need to examine it more fully。 There is a lot of nuance here that seems past my current summer reading situation。 I really loved the ahead of its time examination of domestic abuse, mental health and the role of women。

I only read A Streetcar Named Desire , I might read the other two in the future, who knows。I really liked the way this book explored the themes and the commentary it did on women and how their role was defined by American society, especially Southern women, who were ill-equipped to deal with life on their own, staying constantly dependent on men。 It was revolting to read, even though I knew where it was going。 I mean, fu***** men!The worst thing is that this type of thing keeps happening nowada I only read A Streetcar Named Desire , I might read the other two in the future, who knows。I really liked the way this book explored the themes and the commentary it did on women and how their role was defined by American society, especially Southern women, who were ill-equipped to deal with life on their own, staying constantly dependent on men。 It was revolting to read, even though I knew where it was going。 I mean, fu***** men!The worst thing is that this type of thing keeps happening nowadays。The point is that I think that it is very well done! 。。。more

A Streetcar Named Desire is, thus far, my favourite piece of literature。 The setting, the characterisation, the plot-line, even the stage directions, it's all stellar。 Everything comes together in one of the greatest downward trajectories put to the medium of fiction。 Blanche DuBois is one of the very best characters ever written。 This is a broken woman who only breaks further as the play progresses, and the journey is enthralling。 Stanley Kowalski is the perfect antagonist of the story, and the A Streetcar Named Desire is, thus far, my favourite piece of literature。 The setting, the characterisation, the plot-line, even the stage directions, it's all stellar。 Everything comes together in one of the greatest downward trajectories put to the medium of fiction。 Blanche DuBois is one of the very best characters ever written。 This is a broken woman who only breaks further as the play progresses, and the journey is enthralling。 Stanley Kowalski is the perfect antagonist of the story, and the supporting characters act as substantiated foils allowing all of them to be worth deeper analysis。 The thematic subversions of trope and reliance on the conventions of the time period never feel indulgent; this feels like a snapshot into a bizarrely awe-inspiring yet soul crushing time period of modern America。I adored this play so much, and would recommend it to anyone。 10/10 。。。more

I want to begin this review by discussing the classic cover art for this play script。 At first I found the rubbery black-and-white stick figures sort of ugly, but now that I've read the play the cover art makes a lot more sense。 The male figure is in the center, with a smaller female figure on each side。 One has her head turned from him and appears to be trying to run away, but is prevented by the male figure's grip on her arm。 The other female holds hands with the male and looks gleeful and ob I want to begin this review by discussing the classic cover art for this play script。 At first I found the rubbery black-and-white stick figures sort of ugly, but now that I've read the play the cover art makes a lot more sense。 The male figure is in the center, with a smaller female figure on each side。 One has her head turned from him and appears to be trying to run away, but is prevented by the male figure's grip on her arm。 The other female holds hands with the male and looks gleeful and oblivious to the other's distress。 Her stance is fluid and light, while the other female is tense。 The noodly lines take on an aura of menace when put into the context of the story。 They now perfectly convey the twisted relationship of Stanley, Blanche, and Stella。 A Streetcar Named Desire is a quick and interesting read, but not something I felt invested in。 The characters' problems can be pitiable, but the people themselves are never the kind you would want to know in real life。 Unlikable characters can be done well, but for me they work better if there is someone less morally gray to offset them。 The main trio of A Streetcar Named Desire are all pretty low on redeeming features。 Stella comes across as just a spineless and shallow puppet to her awful husband。 Stanley of course turns out to be a violent and domineering bully。 I felt somewhat sorry for Blanche since she did go through horrible things in the story, but I really couldn't like her after her history of creeping on teenage boys came to light。 Blech。 The motifs used in this play are interesting(i。e。 the emphasis on lights and Blanche being described as mothlike in her introduction, maybe a metaphor for the way a hapless moth smacks into a lightbulb over and over? Stella's name meaning "star" and Blanche's meaning "white" could be continuing the light theme too。), and the setting and atmosphere are immersive。 I definitely don't regret finally trying it out, but I also didn't connect to it as many other people have。 It's a complex and original story, but unfortunately populated mostly by miserable people。 。。。more

4。8 ✨✨✨✨✨ i actually really liked it for a classic! it was deep and straight forward at the same time, there were things to be uncovered but it didn’t have to be? it’s strange because the play is told from Blanches life, and Blanche is known as a liar, we can’t actually distinguish the truth away from the lies in the play
